Undercover Break - videogame with Vhs feel

Eighties – whole age. Videocassettes, first home computers, new age in entertainment history, appearance of musical television, hard to believe super projects of Soviet Union, Buran project.

Intro for the game is made in style to remind 80s style, and it is made based on 8 bit computers style. And, it is not correct. It is some stylization. Some kind of MSX2 can do this. Who know this, today. So here we have a stylization effect.

Let’s make a setup for a road. A long road. Road with blue colored silhouette is going forward. And everything is dark around. Picture of a police signal. Just like it is also a intro for some action movie about car. Road theme. And, also theme of videocassettes. Videocassettes are appeared in 80s.

It is the right time to remember your favorite action movies, movies about policeman, about cars. Lethal enforcement, Knight Rider, Mad Max. Do you ever dream to seat in the KITT from Knight Rider? It is science fiction car with super powerful electronic helper. All of these smart buttons. Or at least to seat in some legendary muscle car, just the same style that mad max has. To set at the top a police signal and ride forward. To feel yourself as a road wolf. You have also a gun, using it you can shoot, just while you are riding. It is something like a technological pistol or revolver or shotgun. Maybe old-school or with technological powerups. Interceptor, from Mad Max, it is a car.

Also, 80s – it is a decade of 8 bit computers. Just like Zx Spectrum, MSX, MS DOS. All of these computers has some unique characteristics. Some cool features. I can remember, that some monitors has 1 color. Just like red colored of green colored. Have you ever seen MSX? These game computers were unique. They have different visual forms from different manufacturers. And also in Soviet Union there were lots of 8 bit computers. It is lots of soviet variations of Spectrum compatible computers – for example, Delta C, Leningrad, Sintez 2. And there were more interesting computers. Attempt to create its own variation of MSX – PC Sura. There were Hobbit PC, Master, Corvet, Agat. Whole park of computers.

What purpose am I writing these? Just because of it is a retro game. Game about nostalgia moment about 80s. Videocassettes, 8 bit computers. But it is made a modern way. All of these are made under impressions from 8 bit systems, 16 bit systems, MS DOS applications. Something with memories about 386SX2, 486DX2.

Game has pack of settings for your comfort. You can play in a window. With the first run game runs in a window. This is retro. 800 x 600. Or you can set from settings a fullscreen. There is language select – Russian or English. You can play with sound or without. With music or without. And also you can setup a volume for music and sound. So these are a scale of settings.

A special settings are scanlines. They are made with the most simple way. And you can setup them. You can select vertical or horizontal. And also a frequency of lines.

So, game is made like retro format. Modern retro game. About a car with shooting. Action racing. But made in retro theme. Just like for MSX2+, or PC MS DOS. But modern. By the way, all time I was a fan of Highway Star for nes. I was looking at this side.

So, you are a policeman. And you are at patrol ride. Before every race – you have a text screen with story. It is made with retro theme. White font, blue background. You can skip it. But it has a story.

By the way if you are tired of music and sound than you can turn off them or adjust volume.

At last, you are at the road. In your police car, that is equipped with computer electronics. It gives you indications. It is game interface. And it helps while you are shooting. It draws red rectangle zone of possible shot. Shooting is not fast. It is like revolver or shotgun. After a shot – it is goes auto reload.

Before taking a patrol mission you receive a task. Who to catch and how many to catch. Don’t hesitate. To catch – means to destroy. You also can run to ram them. But in this case, you will loose some life points. You have 300 life points.

This is race with shooting. So, you need to ride and shoot. It is also a patrol game type. You need to ride from point A to point B. And you are patrolling road. As a rule, there is a road traffic. Traffic from a citizens cars. For ram or shooting in civilian cars you will get score penalty. So just avoid them.

What is this life is about? It is a road! Many people can say this. Artists, truckers. And you too can say this. While you are playing this title. Everything that is existed here – it is the road. And you need to move forward. You are checking the road for criminal cases. And they are exists. You have two types of those, who above the law – bandits with jeeps and street racers, with bright colors of lowered sport cars. You need to catch them all! So, this means to shoot them all! And destroy them all! Or if you wish -go for ram. It is a choice of your taste.

Road, road. It can be so different. It is 13 missions. So, we have here a road in a city landscape. Cities are different – big and small. Ride a road – it is a main theme for a game. You are on wheels. And with a weapon. You are a patrol policeman. Drive carefully. Like a sheriff. There are some places on the road, when you want to go faster. Turn on a turbine. It will charge you up to maximum 280! Maximum speed is 280. So, this way you can to pass a boring place faster or reach street racer. Street racers are very fast at the very first time. And they appear with some distance between you and them. Use nearest street racer scale. For orientation.

When you will complete 13 levels that you will go for a vacation! Policeman will go to vacation! So, game has a joy final. Such summer. Sunny.

Redmagic 8S Pro Pros and Cons

The Redmagic 8S Pro is Nubia’s mid-cycle update to the powerful gaming smartphone. It has the same 120 Hz screen with an under-screen selfie camera, 6000 mAh battery, and 65W wired quick charge as the 8 Pro, but it’s 0.6 mm bulkier.

Can it offer a unique gaming experience? Can it be current and retro?

It lacks waterproofing like the earlier model, but many gaming phones have to choose. High-performance gaming devices must quickly disperse heat. A sealed machine cannot support an active cooling fan that moves air through the chassis and over the internals.

Redmagic 8S Pro cooling has been redesigned. Redirected air ducts, heat pipes with a more efficient cooling gel, a larger vapour chamber over the battery, and a graphene layer under the display. All work to remove heat from the casing and keep the handset’s surface cool.

After confirming that the games that worked well on the 8 Pro work just as well, if not better, on the 8S Pro, I decided to test the 8S Pro differently. How well would it handle old games and my childhood favorites?

Redmagic 8S Pro hardware features

Emulation may be cruel. Developers must replicate the exact performance of one system on another while also providing an additional UI layer to control the emulator, such as changing frame rates, choosing the hardware version, loading cassette tape or ROM cartridge games, and integrating with the smartphone environment.

While older 8-bit systems like the ZX Spectrum may have fewer performance concerns, a smartphone is far from the qwerty keyboard-based environment with a digital joystick operating through an RS232 serial interface. On newer devices, you must match the Nintendo 3DS experience while maintaining high frame rates and game pace.

The Redmagic 8S Pro will benefit from a third-party controller. Although my review unit did not include the Redmagic Shadow Blade Gamepad, the firm does. Instead, I’ll use two available controllers. The Razer Kishi, like the Shadow Blade, is a console-style device that splits in half and clips to either end of the screen. It is extraordinarily wide.

Second controller is 8BitDo’s SN30 Bluetooth gamepad. Despite not attaching to the machine, this retro-style gamepad has two analog sticks, a d-pad, four action buttons, and shoulder triggers. For modern games, the Kishi feels natural, but the SN30 is more 80s and 90s.

The 8S Pro recognizes both Bluetooth and USB-C controllers without issue. Android on the Redmagic 8S Pro connects and passes inputs rapidly, however my apps take longer to assign controllers to games.

Over the past month, I’ve used RetroArch, PPSSPP, and Citra to emulate three eras.

Retroarch is a mature multi-platform emulation system that covers practically all video game history. It offers the UI layer and Android hooks, while each emulator has a different “core” you download from the app or external sources. I use Retroarch on older systems. As with all emulation, you now have a ‘raw’ system that requires games to be ripped and moved over or found on the internet.

Chase HQ on the ZX Spectrum runs these older titles well. One of the best titles on the platform that pushes everything, it is. Thus, an experienced player like me knows how fast, responsive, and visually appealing the game should be. Chase HQ passed with flying colours, so we can say, “Let’s Go Mr Driver.”

This whistle-stop check-in continues with Sony PlayStation Portable emulation. PPSSPP is an open-source, mature Android and Windows client. Things get harder now, but the Redmagic 8S Pro handled it well, even allowing upscaling and texture filtering without affecting gameplay. Modernizing the aesthetics may not be for the “pure emulation” crew, but adding FXAA anti-aliasing is wonderful.

Again, the 8S Pro’s increased horsepower lets you customize the emulator without worrying about the phone’s capabilities.

Emulation becomes harder in contemporary systems. Citra is a Nintendo 3DS emulator that brings the dual-screen gaming gadget to a touchscreen smartphone (you can pick how to display the screens). This is when Android emulation reaches its limit. While PPSSPP and Retroarch cores could be set without anxiety, imitating the Nintendo 3DS takes experimentation and decision-making.

Would you rather have precise frame rate? A perfect sound? On-point graphics? Not everything is available in the Redmagic 8S Pro’s specs

Nubia’s gaming performance focus helps here. Most Android phones are slower than the 8S Pro. Comparing Citra on the 8S Pro to the Galaxy S23 Plus shows the 8S Pro’s gaming performance advantage.

I lowered the audio to maintain frame rate!

My emulation seldom used the Redmagic 8S Pro’s full power. It gave me some optional caveats. A good control mechanism can make a game different. Made for mobile games like Genshin Impact, Fortnite, and Mighty Doom, the control schemes have been optimized for touchscreens and gyro sensors. Moving back in time, the on-screen controls work well, but a tactile controller reduces aggravation and makes the game more playable.

Which naturally raises prices. Razer Kishi 2 controllers cost £99, Redmagic Shadow Blades £69, and SN30s £39. The Redmagic 8S Pro seems more like a console than a smartphone thanks to its two plug-in controllers. SN30 delivers a deep throwback experience, but you must set your phone down to use the controller with both hands.

Like choosing between Xbox, Playstation, and Switch, you must decide how you will use your gaming smartphone. As the Redmagic 8 Pro showed earlier this year, it offers great value for the top native Android games. The Redmagic 8S Pro can be used to explore gaming history and use an Android smartphone in the background.

Game Review : Space Raiders

Sinclair ZX81 / Sinclair Research/Psion/Mikro-Gen / 1982 / Originally £3.95

Ladies and gentlemen, we give you the golden age of cover art.

Good artists borrow, great artists steal. A comment that is often associated with the late Steve Jobs about his appropriating the GUI concept from Xerox PARC in the 1980s. It’s not an unromantic ideal - the young upstart company taking a technology from another, bigger organisation that had gold on its hands but didn’t know it.

Except Steve Jobs didn’t come up with the quote. He said as much in Triumph of the Nerds when interviewed. He didn’t claim to be the father of the modern GUI either; he just happened to see the potential of putting a low(er)-cost computer in the hands of the public that had a GUI.

The early days of the computing revolution were a kleptomaniac’s dream; intellectual property was respected, however it was done very much in a homage sense, rather than a paying-a-licencing-fee-and-doing-an-official-conversion sense.

Bedroom coders everywhere were getting in on the action, developing home versions of popular arcade titles, safe in the knowledge that Atari, Taito or Namco would not send the lawyers after them. After all, this was the early 1980s. Most of the time these companies didn’t know the kids were making these clones in the first place.

So, enter Space Raiders published by Sinclair Research. No prizes for guessing which arcade machine is being ripped-off here. It seems rather pointless to go through the gameplay; it’s so famous after 40 years of public consciousness that going through the mechanics of the game would seem a waste of time.

Let battle commence!

This version does not deviate too far from the golden formula. Some features are missing, like the bonus saucer craft that you can shoot. That said, alien ships come down the screen, and you with your moving gun must defend. Clear the screen and it continues. Over and over and over until they finally manage to land or you lose all of your lives.

Or get bored and unplug the computer.

Or stand up, knock the desk causing the memory expansion on your ZX81 to wiggle and the machine to promptly crash.

So, with the game being so ubiquitous, it’s difficult to stand out without ‘ruining’ the pure Space Invaders experience. Also, at the time there was little need to; this game would come at a time when recreating the arcade was impossible on home machinery - the Atari 2600 might have been the reference hardware for the home in the US, but even that could not hope to live up to the experience you’d get shoving small change into arcade machines. Though you could get some distance to replicating the feel by turning the lights off, have your younger brother spit out his half-eaten sweets on the floor near the machine to make the carpet nice and sticky and get your Mum to shout at you “This is a cafe, not a change machine. If you want change for those bloody machines you’ll have to buy something you little prick. They should bring back conscription. You’d learn some proper respect!” each time you ventured from the gloom into the kitchen.

Your shot is the upper case I, the alien bomb is the *. Interestingly neither you nor your foe can fire again until the projectiles hit their mark or whizz off the screen.

While released by Sinclair in 1982, the game is actually the older Space Invaders coded by Mikro-Gen in 1981. That release had the usual (for the time) monochrome packaging and was not available on shop shelves as games would come to be. The Sinclair release sees the title packaged with another, Bomber, a Blitz variant on the B-side of the cassette. Sinclair seemed to have worked with Psion (later of Organiser fame), who developed the ZX Spectrum version of Space Raiders to bring a similar game to the ZX81 at the same time. Shame that Psion did little more than just recycle an old title.

Buying it today

There are two versions - the ZX81 and Spectrum. The covers are more or less identical, so it’d be easy to get the two mixed up if you were not too careful.

The Spectrum version seems to be the more prevalent on auction sites. The ZX81 version reviewed here was not produced in as great numbers and so commands a higher price. Prices do vary from £10 to £50 depending on condition and how gullible the seller thinks people are. Expect to be able to get it for the lower end of these two figures at the present time.

Note that there is a cartridge version for the Spectrum. These are quite rare and can cost around the £60 mark. If you end up with that, well done. Now you just need to find a ZX Interface 2 so you can play it.

Commentariat

Tim : I’m going to be straight with you. This was the first game that I ever played, so my opinion of the game is really tinted. Back when I first got my ZX81, I absolutely loved it and played it for hours and hours. One particularly epic game was played at the end of the day with the prospect of bed-time looming. I made it count, going further than ever before; my parents, failing to understand the seismic nature of what they had just seen, sent me to bed instead of cracking open the champagne.

Playing it again, I can’t pretend it’s not a disappointment; it certainly isn’t how I remember it, but in these situations, it never is...

Graphically it’s not impressive, even for the ZX81; the coders could really have got more out of the hardware especially as game requires a 16k expansion in order to play the game. That said, it certainly plays well enough. It is harder than other Space Invaders clones out there, but it kind of has to be to ensure you get your money’s worth, which probably says more about the higher quality of the opposition than anything else.

The hardness kept me coming back for more when I first had it, but given that it was this, Bomber or the ICL “Fun to Learn” educational series tape that my folks had bought me in the vain hope I’d learn geography from the computer, it was an easy market to please. Now, it can grip me enough to play it, but the longevity isn’t there.

So is there much to recommend it today? Sadly no. A trip down memory lane, but not a particularly good one.

Pop : Ah, gaming on the ZX81… a tricky proposition on the painful and unresponsive keyboard. If you’ve never experienced it, try to imagine using the buttons on your microwave to play your PS4. Luckily this game of space invaders can be enjoyed at a slow pace! I can’t honestly remember if it was this or another invaders clone I played back in the day, but it’s barely passable fodder for the ‘81. Space Invaders is already a simple game, so leaving out stuff like the saucer is and the invaders speeding up as they get fewer is criminal. At least the bunkers are all present and correct. Still, I’d have happily played this back in may games-starved youth. If you’re going to (re)visit the machine today, check out something like 3D Defender or even better 3D Monster Maze...

Meat : Really, have we reached the bottom of the barrel this quickly? In some ways I jest, but really you’d only want to play this for nostalgia’s sake. Given that it needs a 16k expansion to run, I’d want to have something far better than this. Even for the time. It’s not that the aliens don’t traverse the screen properly sometimes. It’s not the missing saucer bonus alien. It’s not the absence of sound (which I can forgive - you can’t magic up sound from a machine with no ability to generate it). It’s not the lack of bitmap graphics. It’s just that in 16k you’d expect them to do something half decent. Like redefine a character set. For heaven’s sake, they could squeeze a game of chess into 1k at the same time, so I expect better here.

There is so little recommend this today. A couple of goes and the fun is exhausted. Unless you are a collector, save your money and head for better titles on the machine. If you really must have a Space Invaders clone from the era, try Avenger for the Vic 20. Hell, even the dull Atari 2600 Space Invaders cart is better than this.

Score card

Presentation 6/10

At a time when a photocopied inlay with a dour pencil drawing was the norm, the cover was incredibly stylish and smart. Seriously, look at it!

Originality 2/10

Sadly it can’t score highly here. Even in 1982 Space Invaders clones were ‘me too’ products.

Graphics 2/10

Uses the inbuilt graphics character set - plenty of scope (and memory) to do something else, even without a bitmap display.

Hookability 7/10

Plays well and draws you in quickly and effectively.

Sound N/A

The ZX81 has no sound output so unsurprisingly, neither does the game.

Lastability 3/10

While it hooks you in, at the end of the day it’s still ‘just’ Space Invaders. While tough, the missing features means there isn’t the depth to bring you back too often.

Value for Money 5/10

Will give you a fair amount of fun, even with its’ drawbacks. Plus there is a second game - Bomber - on side B.

Overall 4/10

You will get some fun out of it on your ZX81 but if you’re emulating, it’s not really worth the effort, sadly. Nostalgia will only get you so far. If you must play Space Invaders on a ZX81, try QS Invaders.
