Artist Research: Yuichi lkehata
When researching contemporary artists who
work with the theme of the human form in
sculpture I came across Yuichi Ikehata, who
creates these pieces using wire, clay, paper
and plaster as part of an ongoing series
called "fragment of Long Term Memory"
Ikehata photographs his works and then
digitally adds human features like eyes and
hair, enhancing the realism of his pieces.
The exposed wire and plaster reminded me
of the work I did in the studio yesterday
I was debating whether to cover the rest of
the sculpture in another medium but after
seeing these works I rather like the idea of
leaving some of the mesh exposed.

'Fragment of Long term-Memory', Japanese artist Yuichi Ikehata, 2017
Ikehata's artful series ‘Fragment of Long-Term Memory’, is surreal as a dream. This visionary artist and sculptor dives into the fragmentary nature of our memory.
Building sculptures forms of human features made of wire, clay and paper, Ikehata then digitally adds realistic parts, such as skin, eyes, hair and nails. The artist says:
Maker’s view:
“Many parts of our memories… are often forgotten, or difficult to recall. I retrieve those fragmented moments and reconstruct them as surreal images. I gather these misplaced memories from certain parts of our reality, and together they create a non-linear story, resonating with each other in my photographs.”

Unravelling The Human Form One Thread At A Time
Japanese artist Yuichi Ikehata captures fragments of memories and weaves them into disturbing human sculptures paralyzed as time chips away at them agonizingly slow.
Hanging on by a thread, it becomes evident the thinned skin and whites washed subjects have been subjected to a rigorous artistic treatment by the artist. Using wire, clay and paper Ikehata molds a skeletal framework of his art and after photographing the initial form adds eyes, skin and hair. The resulting sculpture in the process of an eerie decomposition, seemingly frozen in time. A mesmerizing effect of physical and digital creations in one sculpture allows Ikehata to design a near flawless illusion of reality and imagination.
The artist explains, “I retrieve those fragmented moments and reconstruct them as surreal images. I gather these misplaced memories from certain parts of our reality, and together they create a non-linear story, resonating with each other in my photographs.” His experience with the human self amounts to a single conclusion - we are in reality a shell of what we aspire to be, and like broken puppets we are worn and torn down with time and as life comes to its ending we are falling apart at the seams or barely hanging by a thread.
