A few aprons to showcase... do they match the potholders? You bet they do!
A lovely half-apron with an attached towel for wiping hands. Could be used for more than just the kitchen!

I decided to start a temperature blanket for 2019.
(Short version: a temperature blanket is one whose colours correspond to the daily temperature for a period of time.  Typically one begins in January and commits to making one “day” of the blanket each day.  A “day” is often a row, but other variations exist, eg: a square or hexagon which are then stitched together like a quilt.)
Here in Winnipeg, MB, Canada: temperatures fluctuate between -40 and +40 degrees Celsius through the year.  But typically the data used is the daily mean temperature--which gives a range more like -30 to +30C.
Potential Problems
Yarn:  When you start a temperature blanket for an ongoing year, you don’t really know how much yarn of each colour you will use.  One solution is to wait until later in the year to start, which lets you take advantage of sales, but also means you’ll be crocheting long after the year has ended, and then you still might not have enough.  Alternatively, you could buy yarn as you go, which means you can’t take advantage of sales as much.
Boredom: I’ve seen stories of crafters getting fed up with their temperature blankets after a month or two.  I also want a stitch that is interesting enough that I’ll want to keep doing it for a year--but not so complex that it’s time-consuming and labour-intensive.
Unexpected colour pattern:  Daily weather being unpredictable during the planning phase means you might have jarring colours.  My take on this: boo hoo, that’s just the nature of the project.  But, maybe I can adjust my colour legend to my advantage during planning.
Planning
I am a planner.  I like to make plans.
I took last year’s temperature data from the Environment Canada Daily Data Report, downloaded as a CSV file.  I filled in any gaps with data from Weather Underground’s historical weather lookup.
Some quick analysis revealed the temperature range for 2018 to be [-26, 28.3].  For my test, I chose some colours in a gradient that I liked.
Evenly distributed, this meant every colour represented an increment of about 6 degrees.
With a bit of Excel magic (conditional formatting), I got an idea what 2018 would look like.  I adjusted the legend to make the resulting colour pattern more appealing:
Tumblr media
(EDIT:  Oops, this is still showing 9 colours.  With ten colours, the increment is 5.43 degrees.)
The resulting colour pattern looks like this:
Tumblr media
Choosing a yarn:  I ended up going with Paintbox Wool Mix Aran [link] from Love Crochet/Crafts because they have so many colours, and I figured it’d be easy to order more if needed.
Here are the colours I chose:
Tumblr media
(Don’t mind the temperature range discrepancy.)
Of course, this was just going on the web colours, but I think it’s a decent match.
I’ll make another post explaining the Excel magic in the future.

Preserve, is the newly opened store front location for Flora & Farmer preserves. Preserve is located at the back of Hildegard’s Bakery with entrances through the bakery, or off Maryland Street. Flora & Farmer’s tagline is: “Delightfully daring preserves your grandma never made.” This is in,  reference to the fact that several of the preserves are alcohol -infused, although I think that may be underestimating a lot of grandmas.
A sign for Preserve, hanging in the hallway of Hildegard’s.
Flora & Farmer’s owner/chef is Kim Bialkoski. I’ve bought her preserves for many years, since I first ran into her at some pop up market for crafters. I often purchase her products at Farmers Markets, local coffee shops, and now at Preserve.
Store Hours
Monday 12-6 Tuesday 10-6 Wednesday 10-6 Thursday 10-6 Friday 10-6 Saturday 10-4 Sunday Closed
Preserve is also an accessible store, although the cornering in the shop may be a little tight.
Along the way I’ve got to know her a little bit. Kim puts her heart and soul into everything she does. It’s always a pleasure taking a couple of minutes to chat. This is especially true if you are asking about any Flora & Farmer products you are buying.
Whenever possible, Kim’s products are local, organic, and created with as little added sugar as possible. This means that the natural flavours of all the products are the stars of the show.
I say that about Flora & Farmer products, because Preserve also carries a whole lot of products from other local markets. It’s pretty much a one stop local shop.
One of the Shelving units in Preserve. You get a real good view of the sunny windows with this one.
Preserve Storefront
I stated at the beginning, the store is set at the back of Hildegard’s. The retail section itself is little more than a hallway. However, it should win an award for best use of a hallway. The walls are lined with several shelves, which do a good job of maximizing the retail space. The cash register is placed in a little kiosk just to one side of the kitchen entrance. Given the number of windows, the store gets a flood of natural light.
The Large Fridge in the Preserve Production kitchen
The kitchen is in a separate small room at the back of the retail area. It’s a small, but full production kitchen. This makes sure that everything Flora & Farmer produces is tasty and meets all food safety standards.
Sampling the Products
Over the years I’ve eaten a variety of food from Flora & Farmer. As the name Preserve suggests, they offer more than just jams and jellies. You can find sauerkrauts, pickles, salsa, and more in the store and at various other retail locations. My favourite, which I don’t have a photo of, is the Applekraut. Kim limits the sweeteners(honey, sugar, maple syrup) that she adds to her products. This way the natural flavours and sweetness shine through. The Applekraut is one product that it takes real discipline not to eat the whole jar at once.
Indian Curry Summer Squah Pickles.
The Indian Curry Summer Squash Pickles(above), are another recently tried product. Like the Applekraut, I really like the flavour in these. They are good and spicy, and that means just a little satisfies my appetite. These lasted me through about four meals, as a side/appetizer.
Sambooya Orange Marmalade. One of the boozy jam options from Preserve.
Sambooya marmalade on a bun from Lisbon Bakery. Keeping the tasting local.
Next on the list is one of the boozy spreads. This is the Sambooya Orange Marmalade. Sambuca liqueur has a black licorice flavour to it. I love black licorice but I know many people don’t. In the marmalade however, the Sambuca offers a licorice finish that doesn’t overwhelm the orange. This marmalade is a great way to introduce yourself to licorice flavour if you haven’t tried it before. Also, I like the really big chunks of orange in the marmalade.
Relishing the Preserve Preserves
The lemon relish really compliments the smoky flavour of the garlic ham sausage.
I also  picked up some Lemon Dill Asparagus relish. I wasn’t sure what I would eat this with. It seemed a little silly to just put this on a bun or slice of bread. Thursday, at the Downtown Farmers Market, I chose a piece of Garlic Ham Sausage from Ferris Farms. This is one of my favourite stalls. Pete’s Garlic Ham Sausage offers a smoky taste along with the garlic.
The relish is a perfect complement to this. Once again I used a bun from Lisbon Bakery. I sliced a chunk of the garlic sausage on one side of the bun, and then slathered on the relish on the other side of the bun. I didn’t add any butter(I don’t use margarine), to make sure I got the full relish effect. The relish does a great job of cutting through the smoky aspect of the sausage. You can really taste the asparagus. If your body is so wired, you can also smell it later.
Preserve also makes a good salsa.
Finally, on this list, is the salsa. This is a fermented salsa. I picked this up a few months ago when I visited the Third + Bird market. The fermentation takes away some of the vinegary quality that a lot of salsas have. At the same time the salsa has a good kick to it, but isn’t overwhelmingly hot.
Summary
I think this gives a good overview of the products that Preserve makes and sells. Don’t forget though, that they also carry a lot of other local products, should you want to stock up. The other day I bought some Mr. Biltong Habanero Stokkies, but I ate them all before I got a chance to take a picture. This morning I also picked up a piece of my favourite Bothwell cheese, the Black Truffle. This is a really smooth and rich tasting cheese.
My favourite Bothwell cheese, the Black Truffle.
One of the things I like about the Preserve location is that it’s in back of Hildegard’s. This allows me to kill two birds with one stone. Great baked goods at Hildegard’s and great toppings at Preserve. This is a place that I highly recommend that you take time to visit.
Take some time and visit Preserve, by Flora & Farmer. @WpgWestEndGal @PrairieTweeter #Winnipeg Preserve, is the newly opened store front location for Flora & Farmer preserves. Preserve is located at the back of Hildegard's Bakery with entrances through the bakery, or off Maryland Street.

JD Wilkes to Returns to the Main Stage at the Grand Rivers Labor Day Weekend Arts & Crafts Festival
Tumblr media
JD Wilkes will return to the main stage of the Grand Rivers Arts & Crafts Festival on Saturday, September 1, 2018, from 1-3 pm.  This Three day show features over 100 crafters and artisans, and popular blues, folk and river music on the main stage.
JD Wilkes is an American musician, visual artist, author, filmmaker and self-proclaimed "southern surrealist".  He is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist (notably on harmonica and banjo), having recorded with such artists as Merle Haggard, John Carter Cash, Mike Patton, and Hank Williams III.
Wilkes’ latest solo album Cattle in the Cane (Arkam Records, January 2015) includes his own renditions of traditional tunes (mostly old-time mountain music), with performances by elder Kentucky fiddler Charlie Stamper (the brother of Art Stamper) on many of the tracks. In the last two years, Wilkes has continued to develop his solo project, having toured with Charlie Parr and The Tillers, as well as performing at the 2015 Winnipeg Folk Festival.
Wilkes is perhaps best known as the founder of the Legendary Shack Shakers, a Southern Gothic rock and blues band formed in the mid 90s. Fans of his work with Legendary Shack Shakers include Stephen King, Robert Plant and former Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra. Rolling Stone named Wilkes as the “best frontman” at the 2015 Americana Music Association Festival for his performance with the band.
A resident of Paducah, Kentucky, Wilkes is a Kentucky Colonel, an honorable title bestowed by the state's Governor upon those with a connection to, or who are famous residents of the state of Kentucky. In 2015, Wilkes was featured on the BBC original series Songs of the South, in an episode focusing on the musical history of Tennessee and Kentucky.
Join us in Grand Rivers for the 2018 Labor Day Weekend Arts and Crafts Festival.   Dates & Times:
