Egypt Day 17/18- Cairo, Kempinski Nile Hotel

My trip started off with fantastic hospitality and I’m fortunate to say that it is coming to a close with equally generous hospitality. The Kempinski Nile hotel from the outside looks like many other hotels in Cairo. Basic and concrete, you would never guess what it held inside but as soon as you step in, you’re transported to a royal palace. With white marble, high vaulted ceilings and large white columns, I felt like I’m in a palace fit for the pharaohs. The staff was equally amazing, all smiling and welcoming, all professional and courteous, they were ready to make my stay both comfortable and memorable. We had no problem understanding each other as they all spoke fantastic English and were happy to hear me use the few words of Arabic I know. It’s like being welcomed by old friends and it really enhanced the whole experience. I’ve combined these two days because, to be honest, it hasn’t been all that eventful. I’m so comfortable here, I don’t really want to leave and my days begin with a delicious breakfast buffet, then to the rooftop pool for some reading and sun soaking. I think I’m one of the youngest people staying here as I haven’t seen anyone that looks remotely my age but it’s nice because no other guests really talk to me, they just look with curiosity, wondering how somebody of my social status can be in a place like this, or so it would seem. I’m not a mind reader but I definitely don’t fit all the other's attire or income and I think they can sense it. I never brush my hair and will hiss at anyone who tries. I rarely wear any makeup and if I do it’s very minimal, and my clothes are all average and comfortable and worn many times over for lack of outfit options- I’m a backpacker, what do you expect? But this doesn’t make the staff treat me any different because I’m polite, I smile, and I’m happy to tip anyone who assists me. I feel like they’re treating me almost better, maybe because they know I’m one of them- a server, a hostess, a concierge, and essentially a servant to the upper class. The wait staff are my people and I have the utmost respect for them because I know what their job entails and I’m happy to tip above and beyond for exemplary service even though a service charge is already added to every bill. They show their gratitude on mornings like today when I never have to get out of my seat to get more food and the manager keeps surprising me with little treats because he knows my palate craves new experiences. It only instills my sense of being home and with each passing day makes it more and more difficult for me to face my upcoming personal hell back in the U.S.

I’m going to tell you a story followed by a recent dream. I will be honest, it is not an easy story to tell and it is why I haven’t written in a couple days but I’ve had some time to think and I think it’s worth being told, despite how it may be perceived. I was sitting on the rooftop pool, reading an amazing book about ancient wisdom and happiness. I finished the book in two hours but even though the words and lessons were all true and resonated deeply, I still felt empty and hopeless. Depression is something I’ve struggled with my entire life and over the years have developed coping methods that are not healthy or productive. So one could hardly call it coping but rather, ignoring. Over the years, I’ve refused all the therapy and all the false happiness drugs and just learned to “cope”. I was finished with my book and I thought I was the only one on the roof and for some reason felt like sitting on the edge of the 11 story building. It didn’t take long before I looked down and began seriously weighing my options. I don’t know how long I was there because time froze just like me while the universe waited for me to make my reality. I felt like there were two paths in front of me and the universe paused everything to wait while I made a decision on which to go down. The ground seemed so far away but I’ve bungee jumped and skydived much greater free falls so it wasn’t intimidating to me in the slightest. If anything, there was greater appeal. I’d had one foot on the ground up until that point but at some time had brought both up to the ledge with me and I peered down with tears pouring down my face. I was having an internal battle. One of me, the calm me, telling me everything was going to be ok to just breathe and look to the horizon. The other poking and prodding me forcing me to look down and telling me that I’m weak and that jump would be my only act of courage. These two fought and struggled for some time and the more they did, the harder I cried and the closer I scooted to the edge. It was then I heard a noise behind me and I turned my head quickly to look. There was a man standing a safe distance away looking out to the horizon and glancing over at me. I tried to ignore him and continue with my internal battle but out of the corner of my eye I could see him slowly coming in my direction. It was then he asked, “How are you doing?” I didn’t want to be rude, so I wiped my face and told him I was good and in turn asked how he was. He smiled kindly but didn’t respond, and just asked where I was from. “U.S.” I said. “Nice place” he said and I shook my head. “Your first time in Egypt?” I nodded. “And how are you liking it?” “I never want to leave.” I responded, my voice shaking. “You can always come back.” He smiled. I didn’t know what to say so I looked back over the edge. “I’m from Cairo but I live in Dubai. Have you ever been to the UAE?” “No, but I’ve always wanted to.” “You should, it’s a nice place.” He smiled again and lit a cigarette. “How long are you here?” “I have been in Egypt all month. It’s my last few days. I started in Giza and from there Luxor and Aswan to Dahab and then Alexandria and now back here.” “It’s a good trip. I hope you enjoyed it and will come back.” He blew smoke from his lips and nose. It was at that time I decided I DID want to come back and I didn’t want to ruin this kind strangers day or the family laughing in the street below. I climbed down from the ledge and grabbed a sip of water. He took a final pull on his cigarette and satisfied, stated, “Well, I hope you have a great day and enjoy the rest of your stay in Egypt.” “Thank you, you too.” I smiled back and he walked away and disappeared down the stairwell. When I looked back out to the horizon, I saw one white balloon floating in the wind just to my left. Maybe it was the parallel universe where I chose to jump, a memorial for me. Or maybe it was a beacon of hope in this universe that I chose to climb down. I’ll never know but it was a sign for something.

A great man recently told me that if a friend is having these types of thoughts and reaches out to simply call 911. I couldn’t disagree more. In my personal experience, this will only worsen the problem because they treat you like a crazy person and not a wounded person. And they’re happy to write a ticket for it too but what good would that do to someone who already has nothing? In all the moments I seriously debated it, I never reached out. There was always some “coincidence” that brought me out of it but the same is not true for many of my friends who followed through. If I did reach out for help it was my only bit of strength, courage, and trust I had left and if the solution of the person I reached to was to call 911 it would only ensure that I never reached out again thus enhancing my chances of success the next time I felt weak and powerless (this was a perfect example). Maybe all my lost friends did the same, only to be proven that their “friends” didn’t care or want to help and so they did the only thing they knew to escape and never reached back out but just followed through. It’s why they’re no longer here with me, with us. I don’t know what would have happened if that man hadn’t come along. The dark side of me was winning that day and the only thing that brought me down was the kindness of a stranger. A simple, “How are you?” I’m grateful he was there but I still wonder, “how am I?” Not good but I can fake a pretty smile. I’ve been back up since and I avoid the ledge, I just look to the horizon.

If someone musters the courage to reach out, talk to them, go to them, remind them they’re not alone and if it gets to the point of needing professional help THEN call 911 but don’t pass the responsibility or the empathy at the first sign of internal struggle. Sometimes all we need is to be acknowledged, to remind us we’re not alone. When I’m depressed, I sleep. A lot. And these last few days have been no exception. After my read and my walk, I come back to my room and collapse on my bed and sleep the rest of the afternoon away. It was then I had this dream- An attacker was chasing me, as usual, and I was running away in terror. It was then I went lucid and I remembered the words of Nicole- stop fighting and approach it from a place of love. So I did. I stopped and let this male vampire catch up to me where he tackled me to the ground and held me there. Instead of fighting and battling to the death like I normally do, I succumbed and caressed his head as he sunk his teeth deep into my chest, biting and sucking the life from me. I told him it was ok, I was ok with dying and I wasn’t upset at him. He then stopped biting me and just laid his head tenderly on my chest, listening to my fading heartbeat. He said he didn’t want to kill but it was his nature and he needed to live. I said I understood and that’s why I didn’t hate him and I wasn’t upset. The dream faded from there because I fell out of lucidity but the lesson remained and stayed with me into my moments of consciousness. I messaged Nicole immediately to thank her and tell her I loved her. Now, I thank the universe for making her my roommate so I could learn this lesson. And I thank the universe for that man talking to me when he did.

There is no such thing as coincidence.

No visit to Dubai is complete without a luxury Dubai evening desert safari, and the best desert safari is one that is both an adrenalin rush and an entertaining evening with good food and traditional Arabic hospitality.

I didn’t truly appreciate the endless majesty of the desert landscape or understand the profound attachment that it’s inhabitants have to it, until I did my first Dubai evening desert safari.

It was May 2007 and my cousin was on a 3 night Dubai stopover before he traveled onward for his work assignment in the UK. He invited me to join him on a desert safari as I had never been on one in the six months since I arrived to start my expat life in Dubai.

After a 30 minute drive to the outskirts of the city, the convoy of Land Rovers stopped at a small strip mall to de-pressurise their tyres. We were encouraged to go inside the shops and because it was hot, buy water and ice lollies. My poor cousin nearly fainted when he saw that two soft drinks and two ice lollies cost over AED50. Thankfully that was the last shock of the day.

I was spellbound by the undulating dunes that varied in color from sandy beige and peachy brown to light taupe rose as the light faded at sunset, and have been entranced by the desert since.

How to choose a luxury Dubai Evening Desert Safari

The cost of desert safari in Dubai varies by company and depends on the package selected at the time of booking. The most popular is the evening desert safari that includes dinner and entertainment, but there are also options for an overnight desert safari or a morning desert safari.

Many of the desert safari deals offered online are very basic, with the safari part being nothing more than a rough ride over a few sand hills, followed by a low quality dinner. In my experience the cheaper the price of desert safari deals, the worse the experience. That can range from old vehicles that can barely scale a dune (hence the rough ride over aforementioned sand hills) to reheated food that was cooked in the morning.

Book your Dubai Desert safari tours with registered tour operators. This is important because the registered tour operators employ skilled drivers who know how to maneuver the vehicles on the sand dunes. Unskilled drivers are a health hazard as they may cause accidents on the dunes during the dune bashing.

All reputable operators offer a pick up and drop off service from your hotel or residence. This is particularly important at the end of the night when you are exhausted and reach back to the city between 22:00 and 23:00.

Reputable tour operators offer complimentary water during the desert safari. Many others stop at pre-determined road side stores to de-pressurise their tyres and encourage tour participants to purchase often ridiculously priced water, soft drinks and snacks.

Individuals with impaired mobility must check whether wheelchair users can be accommodated on a desert safari. Others with impaired mobility or joint diseases, like myself, find sitting on the floor for dinner extremely uncomfortable, if not painful.

If you suffer from motion sickness I would advise that you drink your medication when you leave the city. I had forgotten to take mine and by the end of it I was feeling like my head was going to explode and I was very close to vomiting.

I have been on a few over the past 13 years but the best desert safari in Dubai was the most recent luxury VVIP Dubai evening desert safari with Royal Mirage Tours for a team building session. The skilled drivers made the dune bashing more fun than a roller coaster ride.

The desert safari price in Dubai ranges from AED 130 per person for a non-private arabian desert safari to AED 500 plus per person for a VVIP evening desert safari in Dubai.

What to wear on a Dubai evening desert safari

Mandatory requirements are a sunhat or visor and sunglasses to protect your eyes against the harsh desert sun.

If the wind picks up and you suffer from any allergies it is advisable to wear an anti-dust face mask or even disposable surgical masks. This will prevent the fine desert sand from filling up your nasal passages and airways. A thin scarf may be used instead.

Closed shoes or sneakers are easier to walk with on the hot sand.

Long sleeved t-shirts and trousers are advisable to protect limbs from the hot sun and sand when out on the dunes for sandboarding or quad bike rides.

Dune bashing Dubai

The drivers must de-pressurize the tyres before the vehicles go out on the dunes for dune bashing to prevent the vehicles from sinking into the dunes. When the dune bashing is over they need to re-inflate the tyres to drive on the roads.

Tour participants have an opportunity to try sandboarding when the dune bashing is completed. It is a fun activity, but can be a struggle to learn how to balance for long enough to get to the bottom of the dune without toppling off the sandboard. Getting back up the dune is a mission and by the end of it you may have sand lurking in every orifice.

After the sand boarding the desert safari continues with a quad bike safari at a special village a short distance from the desert. There is a camel viewing area and a few small kiosks for refreshments.

The bedouin style desert safari camp was a luxuriously appointed thing of beauty. Surrounded by palm trees, it was a respite from the desert winds and heat and had luxurious clean rest rooms, a souk as well as a chillout and shisha area. The large dining area was adjacent to the stage for after dinner entertainment.

The buffet dinner offered on the Dubai evening desert safari by Royal Mirage Tours is as good as any you will find in a five star hotel in Dubai. The catering is done by the Jebel Ali Golf Resort Hospitality and Events division and all foods are freshly cooked on the afternoon and evening of the event.

The variety was astounding, from Arabic Cold Mezzeh and a full salad bar and bread, to soup, fresh barbeque and hot dishes including grilled fish with lemon butter sauce, lamb tagine and vegetable korma. This was followed by a variety of hot and cold desserts.

After dinner entertainment

After dinner we were entranced by the tanoura, belly dance and fire dance shows. The skill of the tanoura and belly dancers was evident and made for very entertaining routines. To preserve the modesty of the female performers we chose not to display any photos of their revealing outfits.

The fire dance show was amazing and hard to capture on video or photo.

To keep warm during the evening we wrapped ourselves in the soft clean fleecy blankets provided by the establishment. By the time we left for the 45 minute drive back to Dubai we were exhausted but thoroughly content. It was a wonderful afternoon on the dunes of the Dubai desert and an evening spent eating delicious and tasty food and being entertained by skilled performers. This is one activity worth paying extra for because it is a truly unforgettable once in a lifetime experience.

Paedophile footballer Adam Johnson has come under fire for flashing a £100,000 watch while playing fetch with his dogs – just days after the disgraced winger walked free from prison. 

The 31-year-old was released from HMP Moorland in the dead of night on March 22 after serving half of his six-year sentence for grooming and sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl. 

But he has been accused of flaunting his freedom after being spotted boasting a luxury Richard Mille wristwatch in a park near his £2million mansion in Castle Eden, County Durham.

He was spotted in a park near his £2million mansion in Castle Eden, County Durham, with his sister Faye, 25

‘To look at Johnson now, you’d never know he’d been inside. His victim’s family will be horrified to see him flaunting his wealth like this’, a source told the Mirror. 

Along with his 25-year-old sister, Faye, he chucked mini footballs for his two cockapoos to chase on Sunday. 

In 2012, the then-Manchester City signing attended a sponsorship event with ex-manager Roberto Mancini as Richard Mille struck a partnership with the Premier League club. 

And despite being locked up for three years, Johnson does not appear to have lost his expensive taste in clothes as his Fresh Ego Kid tracksuits retail for a hefty £100. 

The backlash caused by the convicted paedophile, who himself has a four-year-old daughter, comes after reports that his friends were planning to transform his seven-bedroom home into a ‘party pad’ for a wild welcome home bash. 

Rumours of an extravagant shindig seemed to be ring true when a Majestic Wine van pulled up outside his mansion and sister Faye was seen with an armful of ‘Welcome Home’ balloons.

Johnson endured a nailbiting final week in prison as he feared that he would be attacked by ‘nutters’ when he was on the outside, according to sources close to the shamed ex-England international.

Prisoners are usually released from jail just after 6am – though exceptions are made for ‘high profile’ inmates such as Johnson, whose father David drove him from prison in a blacked-out Mercedes. 

And Johnson’s seeming willingness to lapse back into his pre-prison lifestyle comes after his ex-girlfriend said she does not regard him as a paedophile.

Stacey Flounders, 29, also claimed she thought his six-year jail sentence for sexually touching a 15-year-old girl was ‘extreme.’

Speaking for the first time about her ordeal, she said: ‘What he did was wrong. In the eyes of the law she was a child and he should have known better. Even so, the sentence was a shock. I thought it was extreme.’

Miss Flounders said she and Johnson would tell their daughter Ayla the truth about his offending when she is 13.  

In 2017, the Court of Appeal threw out Johnson’s challenge against his 2015 conviction.

And Faye stood by her brother throughout this period, posting a flurry of appeals on Facebook and Twitter using the phrase ‘Justice for Johnson’ and the hashtag #TeamAJ.
