God today was so tiring for me.. okay but Valentino? WHAT AN AMAZING VILLIAN!

I usually prefer like complex villains, but Valentino scratches that itch for a truly hateable and irredeemable villain, that I haven't rlly seen in other things I have been reading and watching recently. He is so BAD. I LOVE TO HATE HIM.

I am very, very interested in the dynamic between him and Angel. Hazbin Hotel is not known for its subtlety, but Episode 4 showcased such a deep and nuanced view of their relationship, and I look forward to seeing that further expanded on in Season 2.

I've seen some recent speculation that the Vees will be the main antagonists of Season 2; if this is the case it makes narrative sense that they each will meet their downfall by season's end, probably with Alastor regaining his power as Overlord. In which case, I am very excited to see exactly how Angel will get his freedom, as that is clearly a crucial component to engineering Valentino's downfall. SO EXCITINGGGGG

A Life of One's Own: Nine Women Writers Begin Again, Joanna Biggs - One of my favorite reads of the year! A delicious blend of memoir and literary history, the author researches the personal and professional lives of women writers (including Toni Morrison, Virginia Woolf, Zora Neale Hurston, and George Eliot) as a way to cope with her decision to leave her husband. I learned so much and wanted to murder Ted Hughes. It's an excellent, gossipy good time.

I Meant It Once: Stories, Kate Doyle - I would rename this collection Stories for Sad Girls, which used to be my brand........but to be honest, at first I felt too ancient for all of the early-twenty-something emotions. A few stories in I adjusted, however, and then the reading experience became more like a journey to a time when the future was unknown and excitinggggg rather than ya know, constantly fearing that life's various, terrible inevitabilities are just around the corner.

Lives of the Saints, Nancy Lemann - A novella that made me laugh, cry, and consider booking a trip to New Orleans.

things you collect: Do books count? I absolutely collect books lol, I have three huge shelves in my living room. If books don't count, probably fluffy blankets lol. I have tendency to amass blankies and make nests during the winter.

favourite drink: Either hot chocolate or iced tea, OR if we're talking drinks-you-buy then Iced Capps from Tim Hortons is always my go-to!

favourite musical artist: Bear Ghost! Every song by that band is a banger, though Sirens and Big Town Bankey Blaine's Rockabilly Barbecue are my favorites.

dream place to visit: I've always wanted to go to Whistler for the snowboarding, but also I've always wanted to visit Athens, Giza, Rome, Paris, London, all those "architecture" heavy cities.

place you wanna go back to: I really liked Myrtle Beach, the heat and the ocean were loveellyyyy! And British Columbia was beautiful too, the redwoods were awesome!

still, eternal, infinite. here, it seemed as if time never passed, as if nothing ill had ever breached its corners and tainted the pristine ground. kanae would often liken the courtyard to a sanctuary of sorts, where the ring of wind chimes resonate so clear that you could feel it in your core. and though it was invariably accurate, what she had failed to mention in such a vivid image, however, was that this happened while its master succumbed to the disease of a curse. seemingly, he tamed it and suffered alone, all so as to maintain a moment of tranquility that everyone else could enjoy. it was unsettling, and shinobu was always reminded of that bizarre dichotomy by oyakata-sama’s creeping bruise, the slow erasure of the rhythm in his steps, and the way caught air began to replace more and more of his words. 

“shinobu-chan!” layered with happiness and fueled by sweets, the familiar voice of the love hashira officially breaks her out of that thought. naturally and eagerly, a pink smile overtakes her features. if any of the hashira could draw a genuine smile out of her, it would be mitsuri. “kanroji-san, how ar––”

“how was your mission? my crow tells me of a strange group of people you encountered? that’s so excitinggggg! tell me all about it! you look so pretty today!” each item falls in succession, one after the other, with no pause to break up the fleeting thoughts. to most, it’d be a game of catch-up, but having worked with the other girl for the better part of a year or so has given shinobu enough time to learn the rules of it.

that, and she cared. and on its own, that was enough.

“thank you, kanroji-san, as do you. i did, and it was wonderful, however, as you’ve said, quite bizarre!” she beams at the girl, seamlessly acknowledging each of her declarations in a neatly packaged answer. the beginnings of their conversation already rattles the courtyard, and naturally, begs the attention of the other hashira. as if the voice of his former pupil was his command to join, the booming voice of rengoku enters the air and disrupts the quiet calm. “strange? how so? do tell, kocho!” 

at his informal behest, she knew then that the private conversation between her and the other girl had become one for everyone. her eyes flutter at the feeling of her comrades gazes focusing in on her, one by one; despite this, however, her cheery demeanor remains.

“i happened upon them while searching for an inn. they were hospitable, the husband and wife, and i thought them to be trustworthy. however...as the night fell, i realized that it housed several more people, and though they all seemed very friendly, they were...odd. odd, in a sense that every sentence they spoke connected to god, and they often alluded to a paradise.” 

she paused, partly because she sought the words to continue the tapestry of a story she so woven, but also, to wonder why her gaze (which, seemingly had a mind of its own at the moment) suddenly fell upon the newly inducted hashira. as if her brief silence were their cue,  the other hashira began to quip amongst themselves about the possibilities of such a people. 

“perhaps they were demons?” “no, kocho would have sensed that!” “spirits, then.” 

these theories continued, and yet douma, what with his usual (or at least, what shinobu had deemed as such from their handful of interactions) affable personality, failed to join in with his own. odd, and out of place, just like that conglomerate of people she crossed paths with.

“douma-san? won’t you join us in attempting to elucidate this event?”
