Diego Velázquez (ES, 1599 - 1660)
Las Hilanderas (The spinners) / The Fable of Arachne (La fábula de Aracne) ca. 1657. Oil on canvas 222,5 × 293 cm. Prado
The x-ray of the canvas reveals the multiple patches used to expand the originally cramped yet ingeniously reversed POV of the theme.
In 1948, art historian Diego Angula produced a convincing argument that the iconography of Las Hilanderas suggests the Fable of Arachne. The helmeted figure in the background is Pallas Athena, and the tapestry visible to the viewer as the Rape of Europa, the subject that Arachne was said to depict.
The tapestry is a copy after Titian's Rape of Europa, also copied by Rubens in 1629, both prized items in the Spanish royal collection.
The reference to Titian and Rubens's copies could be a parallel to Arachne's conviction of being able to surpass goddess Athena. The POV reverse could also be a provocation by setting lay women just in the front layer...

24. Buenos Aires, 1968.

The World's Most Controversial Painting | Las Meninas
Las Meninas was painted in the 17th century by Diego Velázquez, that much we know, but there are a dozen unknowns associated with it. From the mysterious mirror to the man in the doorway, the red vessel and the red emblem on the painter's own chest, there's much to be debated. Artists, historians, critics, and philosophers have written about this painting over the last 350 years. It's been called a time machine and an optical illusion; it's the most talked about piece in Western art and for good reason. Find out why when you fall down this rabbit hole.

Velázquez was born in Seville in southern Spain
Diego Velázquez (1599-1660) was born in Seville in either May or June of 1599. We don’t know the exact date because only the date he was baptized is known, which was June 6 of that year.
He was the child of a man named Juan Rodriguez de Silva and his wife Jerónima Velázquez. This means that he took on the last name of his mother which is remarkable, but understandable because his grandparents were immigrants from Portugal multiple decades earlier.
He remained vague about his true background throughout his life and even mentioned he descended from minor nobility when he was offered a knighthood by the Spanish King. That’s most probably because his ancestors were of Jewish descent.
