hello!! one of your last posts urged me to ask for your take on this: are Doc and Marty in lonepine'85 the same Doc and Marty as in twinpine'85? Marty replaced himself in the fixed timeline and his memories didn't change, but what about Doc? Does he remember being friends with the other Marty, from a supportive family with no father-issues? or Doc's memories didn't alter too and he remembers the same things as twinpines'Marty? i am sorry if it's confusing, but it keeps me awake at night
Oh wow, I have definitely thought about this before & seen many a post about it too. Seems like there’s a lot of debate surrounding the topic, but here’s my take on it:
No, they are not the same. Marty, our original Marty (A), replaced the Marty that grew up in the Lone Pine timeline. Like you said, his memories didn’t change or merge, something that seems supported by the comic series that explores this whole topic. That one showed that it’s several months after the events of the 3rd film & Marty is super frustrated because none of his memories match up with what people tell him happened. There’s no indication that he’s gained any memories, from what I remember. (Though the comics aren’t set in stone as canon, I still think all of this is worth noting.)
What happened to the “other” Marty (Marty B) then? I have no clue.
As for Doc...I mean, I guess he isn’t the same Doc either, right? The way time travel works in BTTF indicates that once something is changed, it creates a new timeline & erases the old one. So Twin Pines Doc, who had a whole slew of memories & experiences in his friendship with Marty A, is gone. That whole timeline is.
The Doc we know from ‘55, after helping to send Marty back to 1885, then went on to live his life & eventually meet a young Marty & start a friendship with him. He got to know Marty A from their week in ‘55 & perhaps any stories Marty might have shared about his original parents, but I’d venture to say that’s it. Doc wouldn’t have gained memories of Twin Pines Marty or from that timeline in general because he wasn’t part it. He had a week with Marty A but then eventually met & got to know Marty B, who obviously grew up with very different circumstances.
The whole concept is just headache-inducing, especially when you consider the fact that Lone Pine Doc knew of everything that would happen at the mall. He knew Marty B would jump into the DeLorean and time-travel, so...where did he go? Because if he traveled to ‘55 and messed with anything significant there, then the timeline Marty A returns to would vanish.
I don’t even know where I’m going with this anymore. Point is, I’ve seen a few theories that Doc may have set a different destination time for Marty B really far into the past or the future to simply “get rid of him” or possibly even rigged the DeLorean to kill him. It’s bonkers & I’m pretty sure no matter what theory you come up with, it ends up resulting in a paradox & collapsing on itself. (I think we just have to suspend disbelief & accept the movie logic)
But the whole thing is super interesting to think about. What kind of memories does Lone Pine Doc have regarding Marty? How did he make sure that everything lined up perfectly so that the events in the parking lot played out exactly as they were supposed to? Did Marty B still destroy the amp in Doc’s lab??
Basically...I have no idea what I just said for several paragraphs, time travel makes no sense, & Doc potentially murdered Marty B according to some people.
Sorry for the essay. Also, if anyone has other theories/ a better grip on this than I do, feel free to share your thoughts & tell me I’m wrong lol.

Proceeds will be donated to the Louisville Community Bail Fund
I grew up around the south and Louisville was one of my many homes. I still have family and friends that live there, many of whom are protesting to make the world a better and safer place.
I’m a straight, white man. I don’t have a great way to express this sentiment without feeling racist, but I had the realization today that, when viewing coverage of police brutality, I had never imagined the victims as being my immediate family, because I’m never forced to watch someone who looks like my dad die, killed by government employees on the news, on repeat, for days or weeks, people publicly analyzing and commenting about what would justify killing him in the street, how he called out that he couldn’t breath and whether or not five minutes of being pinned to the ground was acceptable, but seven minutes being unacceptable. How dehumanizing the sterile discussion is.
I went to Boston for the first time before quarantine stuff happened and it’s surreal to be in places where seemingly huge historic events took place, then seeing the reality of scale, that the events were small, but what the larger public consciousness did in reaction changed the course of history. Crispus Attucks was the first person killed during the Boston Massacre when civilians antagonized British soldiers and the soldiers then shot into the crowd. The death of Attucks and others helped spark the American Revolution, he later became a celebrated figure for abolitionists, as it was a black man who first gave his life for the American Revolution.
