Air Canada argued in the civil tribunal that the chatbot is a “separate legal entity” to the company, and that it could not be held responsible for its words to customers.

Tribune member Christopher Rivers ruled in favor of Moffat on Wednesday, determining that the airline committed “negligent misrepresentation” and that it must follow through with the chatbot’s promised discount.

“This is a remarkable submission,” he wrote. “While a chatbot has an interactive component, it is still just a part of Air Canada’s website. It should be obvious to Air Canada that it is responsible for all the information on its website. It makes no difference whether the information comes from a static page or a chatbot.”

Rivers ordered Air Canada to pay Moffat the promised $483 refund plus nominal fees.

“I find Air Canada did not take reasonable care to ensure its chatbot was accurate,” Rivers continued. “While Air Canada argues Mr. Moffatt could find the correct information on another part of its website, it does not explain why the webpage titled ‘Bereavement travel’ was inherently more trustworthy than its chatbot. It also does not explain why customers should have to double-check information found in one part of its website on another part of its website.”

The support chatbot, launched last year, was not visible on the airline’s website as of Sunday.

The B.C. Human Rights Tribunal has ruled in favour of a visually impaired woman who says a Vancouver café discriminated against her in September 2019. Georgia Pike, a 28-year-old Victoria, B.C. woman, who prefers the term visually impaired to blind, uses a guide dog to navigate. She says she and her father were refused service by the Ooh La La café because they were accompanied at the time by her guide dog, Grainger.  After Pike spent nearly four years fighting her case, the tribunal has found the café's actions to be discriminatory and ordered it to pay her $12,000. Pike is grateful for the outcome and the support she received from her father and the University of Victoria Law Centre but says she wishes the process was simpler.

halloween is a celtic festival, it was brought over to the americas by scottish & irish immigrants. you might be thinking of the phrase "trick-or-treat" which is definitely canadian?

@77bears You're absolutely right, it started in Celtic British cultures.

I was referencing the gif that called Halloween an "American holiday" but I probably should have made it more clear that I meant in the sense of "in the Americas".

But modern Halloween as a whole is, as far as we have evidence for, a Canadian invention. One of the earliest mentions of people dressing up and going door to door is in 1898 in Vancouver:

though there are earlier mentions of Halloween in Canada dating to at least 1820.

By 1910 in Winnipeg, we have the first recorded evidence of Halloween being widespread, as Halloween candy buckets were being advertised:

Halloween pranks were first reported in an 1898 Vancouver newspaper article saying that Halloween pranks would not be a problem that year.

Jonathan has recently been in Seattle after working in Vancouver, but here’s an interview from November 2013 about his favourite cities, holidays and travel memories. Including:

Q. Your “Frozen” character, Kristoff, is a mountain man. Are you an outdoorsman as well?

A. My mom’s a gym teacher and she and my dad were both athletes. So we were always an active family. Ever since we were little, we did long bike rides. I’m a runner and I hike and I love being outdoors and doing all that kind of stuff. But I’ve never been on a proper camping trip. I camped outdoors in our backyard! (Laughs) I’d love to take a week off and camp in Yellowstone. Maybe I could be a hardcore camper. But not the kind who doesn’t need an actual bathroom. So scratch the hardcore part. (Laughs)

Q. Do you like cold-weather destinations?

A. I do! Last year I went to Park City, Utah, with my family and we skied and stayed in a lodge. That was fun. I hadn’t skied in a while. My mom took me skiing when I was little. I was maybe in the fourth grade. A snowboarder hit me from behind! He was a grown man, so it hurt.

Q. What was the first trip you took as a child?

A. It was to Disney World when I was five years old. My mom did a 50-day countdown. Every day before the trip, she would videotape us and we could talk about our upcoming trip or sing a song from Disney. We were so excited. The trip lived up to our expectations 100 percent! I didn’t even mind waiting in the lines to go on the Peter Pan ride and everything. I have to say, I actually love waiting in lines at amusement parks with people who you like. It’s fun. I had a friend who came to visit me from London last year and we went to Disneyland. Anyhow, now here I am in a Disney movie.

Q. Where is the most romantic destination?

A. I’ve honestly never had a romantic vacation. I need to change that right away!

Q. What are your top five cities?

A. I lived in Chicago shooting “Boss” for three months and it was gorgeous. But if I was going to place the cities in my favorite order, it’d be New York for sure. It’s my absolute favorite! Then Lancaster, Pa., Rome, San Francisco and Chicago.

Q. What makes a memorable vacation?

A. Being able to travel by yourself and feeling at home. I went to Rome by myself and just had the most incredible experience there. I went in the summer and it was so sexy and the food was great. I love sitting outside and people-watching. The vibe in the city was amazing. And then to visit the Sistine Chapel was mind blowing. I have to say that when I was in Rome, I ate my face off!

Q. Where have you traveled to that most reminded you of home?

A. I spent some time in Portland, Ore., and the mountains there reminded me of the mountains in Pennsylvania. It was so pretty with the leaves changing.

The Secret Meeting

Kaidan rested his arms against the edge of the table, leaning against it as he kept a watchful eye on the entrance. The fading daylight streaked into the dimly lit bar each time the door was opened. He took another slow sip from the bottle of beer resting in front of him, quickly tossing a handful of peanuts into his mouth to combat the strong aftertaste of the stale, warm beverage.

He glanced toward the nearest holo screen and felt his heart drop as the same old footage repeated between the new coverage from today. The familiar scene of Commander Shepard being escorted from the Normandy SR-2 by Admirals Hackett and Anderson on the day she’d surrendered herself into their custody. The muscular marine assigned as her bodyguard protectively guided her through the crowd of ravenous reporters that shrieked after her, demanding details on what's become known as the Alpha Relay Incident.

Kaidan knew she hated this. It must’ve reminded her of the press tour she’d been forced into after the Blitz. A dark time for her.

The newer footage showed the individuals that had arrived today as the tribunal had begun. He was included among those numbers. His mind was awash with memories of their time together, back before everything had gone wrong. The opinions he’d formed about her character, and his account of the events of the time he’d spent working with her on the SR-1, would be instrumental in the judgment that would be rendered against her. Or so Hackett and Anderson had told him.

He did want to help her. He still loved her, and he always would. But navigating through those memories was taxing. He’d spent two years mourning her, clinging to each second he could recall as the memories slipped through his fingers like water through a sieve. And now he had to wade through them to carefully pluck out the ones that highlighted her character, but kept their romance hidden from the committee.

Page 3. ---- Plane Makes Three Unsuccessful Starts for East Shore of Lake Winnipeg --- Turned back three times by heavy snowfall which now blankets Lake Winnipeg. Flight-Lieutenant K. M. Guthrie, officer commanding Royal Canadian Air Force station at Lac du Bennet, postponed his fight this morning into the north in search of Ingolfur Thodarson, light-house keeper at Big George's Island, and Franklin Johnson, his young companion. The airman plans to hop-off on the search. Thursday. weather permitting.

Guthrie's objective In his huge Vickers Vancouver flying boat was Poplar river, on the east shore of the lake, and 200 miles north of Lac du Bennet. A theory has been advanced by Thordarson's relatives in Gimli that both he and young Frankin rowed from Big George's Island to Poplar river.

Checking Up on Theory Capt. J. Skaption, supervisor of fisheries at Selkirk requested Guthrie on Tuesday to fly to Poplar River to ascertain whether the theory of Thordarson's relatives is correct.

He will make further attempts at the flight today, a phone message from Lac du Bonnet stated. unless flying conditions become more difficult.’

If the stop at Foplar River proves unavailing, he will by into the upper reaches the lake, refueling at Berens River. The flight will total 900 miles. He will be accompanied by Pilot-Sergeant George Elliott and crew. Tug Making Headway Meanwhile the gasoline tug “The Question Mark" in charge of Wiliam and Rey Purvis, in proceeding up the lake, having left Selkirk Tuesday morning.

Its objective is to find the open boat in which Thordarson and Johnson are thought to have been buffeted, from Big George's Island to the shoals on the eastern shore of the lake.

“The Question Mark" will attempt to reach Big George's Island where the lighthouse will be closed up for the winter.

Lighthouse Keeper Lost INGOLFUR THORDARSON Lighthouse keeper at Big George's Island on Lake Winnipeg, has been missing with his companion, young Franklin Johnson of Gimli, since Oct. 17. The search is continuing by water and air for the missing men who are thought to have perished in an open beat during a terriffic storm on the lake.

The City of Nanaimo has been ordered to pay more than $600,000 to its former chief financial officer after he won a human rights complaint over his firing five years ago.  Victor Mema worked as the city's CFO from 2015 to 2018 until he was suspended and then fired over a report of serious misconduct filed by a city staff member, according to the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal decision issued earlier this month. Mema, who is Black, alleged the city on Vancouver Island breached the Human Rights Code by discriminating against him on the basis of his ancestry, place of origin, race and colour. Tribunal chair Emily Ohler found the city's decision to suspend and terminate Mema "were discriminatory."

Uber must pay wheelchair user $35,000, provide accessible rides: B.C. Human Rights Tribunal

Uber Canada has been ordered to pay $35,000 to a man who uses a wheelchair after the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal found he was discriminated against because of his disability. The ride-hailing app was also ordered to offer those with disabilities accessible rides according to the ruling this week.

… Uber told the 2022 hearing into Bauer's complaint that it didn't violate the human rights code because it's an app and doesn't provide a service as defined under the code.

The company also said it was exempt from providing accessible rides in B.C. because of a law that allows Uber and other ride-hailing apps to pay a "per trip" fee instead of accommodating those with physical disabilities, according to the ruling.

The tribunal rejected both arguments and declared Uber contravened Section 8 of the B.C. Human Rights Code, which precludes discrimination on the basis of physical disability, and other factors.
