When we were decorating the tree in our teens, Tracy would tease dad and say, “Ok dad, lift me up.” Mom always liked it when we would hang the decorations we made in school. One of us kids were always a designated Santa who would hand the gifts out to the others just like on the show. Thank God we had no Aunt Clara to give us bunny suits to wear. We had no uncles or aunts at all. Mom and dad were only children. A Christmas Story has been a staple movie for my family to watch every year. It’s warm and homey and just like the Christmases we had. I even wanted a Red Ryder rifle when I was nine.

Karen Wheeler Playlist Part Three
youtube
“Mother Mother” Tracy Bonham
This is told from the point of view of Nancy and Mike to an unknowing Karen who is hurting at their distance from her, they tell her that everything is fine, but things are not fine. They are losing best friends to monsters, dealing with mean kids at school and work (those Hawkins Press guys are man-children), trying to stave off the end of the world, and with relationship drama. But here’s the thing, does Karen really want to know what is going on with her children? How would she take it? That said, the siblings probably want to come to her for help and comfort but just don’t know how to explain their issues to her.
youtube
“The Ballad of Lucy Jordan” Marianne Faithfull
I heard this on Thelma and Louise and I seem to imagine the potential for Karen to join Joyce and become the 1980s Hawkins equivalent (but I can hope for Kali to rejoin El again). Like Louise, Karen is a sheltered housewife with an insensitive husband who doesn’t care for her emotional needs, who joins her single friend Thelma (Joyce) as they go for a road trip away from the no account men in their lives until Louise gets assaulted and Thelma shoots the ass, someone once said that the film started off like I Love Lucy and ends like Easy Rider.
The song is about a dissatisfied housewife at 37 (around the same age as Karen) who laments how she settled early and never got the chance to travel and do unusual things and then her mental health deteriorates.
youtube
“Wedlock is a Padlock” Laura Lee
This could easily be a Joyce Byers song but I feel that it applies to Karen, who wants to warn her daughter about the dangers of committing to a boy too early and how the emotional needs and ambitions of a woman can easily get thwarted when she marries a jerk. This especially applied during the era the song came out in (the same era that Joyce’s and Karen’s kids were born) where no-fault divorce laws were being enacted and divorce was slowly losing it’s stigma.
youtube
“Band of Gold” Freda Payne
Another song about a dissatisfied wife and of young brides, the song is about a sheltered young woman who marries the man of her dreams and finds out on her wedding night that her groom is impotent (or gay) and he then leaves her after they take separate rooms and she is left with a band of gold. Back in the early 1970s when the song was released, Women’s Liberation was just coming into mainstream prominence and was questioning the values and roles surrounding gender and sex, also Griswold vs. Connecticut allowed legal access to birth control for unmarried women. It’s likely that when Karen married Ted in the 1960s (Nancy was born in 1967 and the house was clearly a 1963 model), that even if Ted wasn’t her first experience with sex, she probably didn’t have a lot of knowledge about what to expect and probably felt wanting (no orgasms likely). It’s also likely that Karen was probably brought up to believe that she shouldn’t expect a lot from a man in a marriage and there were times where Karen probably stroked her wedding ring.
youtube
“You Are My Special Angel” Bobby Vinton
This was partly inspired by the famous scene in Mad Men where Betty Draper shot at her neighbor’s birds in an act of housewife rage.
Tumblr media
It’s meant to be ironic, but it’s a nod to how women like Betty and Karen were brought up to be and thought of as angels, decorative trophy wives, and domestic goddesses. There wasn’t a lot of room to acknowledge the full widths of their characters and complexities. They were proabably told not to expect more to do in their lives, accept their lots, and make sure their hubbies had a hot dish ready after a day at work. All they could do was look pretty, keep a clean and immaculate house, give birth, and smoke and drink until they are in a box.

The Children is Jeff’s pick, based on a viewer/listener’s recommendation that the Grue-Crew finally found online. This one had one of Jeff’s phobias from way back (the “what if you weren’t you” trope) which always gives him the heebie-jeebies and to top it off, kid killers, kids killed, and monster kid dismemberment. Chad had a tough time getting into it. He thought The Children had a good concept but didn’t have the budget to see it through. Right off the bat, Crystal knew The Children was going to get weird because it doesn’t make any sense. Even so, she did enjoy parts of it. Bill likes The Children for what it is and suggests it would make a great, weird-kids, 1980s double feature with The Pit (1981).
This one’s for you, Evil! Though not the best film, the 80s Grue-Crew can see how The Children could definitely freak out someone who saw it when they were a kid and it’s worth a watch. At this writing, The Children is available to stream on YouTube and some PPV services and is also available as a Blu-ray from Troma
Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Bill, will be Razorback (1984). Are you ready for some Ozploitation?
Please let them know how they’re doing! They want to hear from you – the coolest, grooviest fans:  leave them a message or leave a comment on the gruesome Magazine Youtube channel, on the website or email the Decades of Horror 1980s podcast hosts at [email protected]

Defending Connecticut: Fortifying New London Against the British in 1812
by Jennifer Sharp for Your Public Media
Outraged by British restrictions on trade, the impressment of American sailors, and confrontations in the Northwest Territory, the United States declared war on Great Britain on June 18, 1812. That summer, as the war got underway, Secretary of War William Eustis wrote to Captain C. D. Wood in New London, Connecticut:
Sir, You will immediately commence the repairs of the magazine at Fort Trumbull and the block house at Fort Griswold and will forward estimates with your opinion of the enclosed plan & works for the harbour of new London.
Fort Trumbull, in New London, was in fact rebuilt in 1812. We do not know what Wood thought of the plan, nor if it was ultimately used. The fort that was built was torn down in 1839, replaced by the structure that still stands.
David Tracey letter to his Father, August 1814 – Connecticut Historical Society
The plan is on a single sheet of paper, approximately 11×17 inches. An image of the profile is on the reverse side. A scale in the upper right corner of the document shows a representation of 20 feet to one inch. Various letters, listed in the lower left corner, denote distances between points of land, a well, and magazines for powder and fixed ammunition. Structures visible are the officers’ quarters and barracks.
New London was not attacked by the British, perhaps in part because of the strength of its fortifications.  In April 1814, British troops rowed up the Connecticut River and burned about 20 vessels in Essex.  In August 1814, they attacked Stonington. After the first night of fighting, David Tracey Jr. wrote to his father from Fort Trumbull, where he had witnessed the attack. “I take a few moments after the alarm and fatigue of last night to inform you some of those events which I presume are with you much [exaggerated].” Tracy continues to explain that the enemy fleet was within four miles of Stonington by 8:00 in the evening. By 9:30 the fighting had begun, and from the parapet of the fort, Tracey could see and hear the firing guns. He describes the militia’s response and ends by noting, “no one killed—3 wounded on our side one English Barge is said to have been sunk and all her crew Drowned.”
The war ended four months later with the signing of the Treaty of Ghent.
Jennifer Sharp was the Connecticut Historical Society’s Project Archivist, working on a manuscript cataloging project funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC).
