Reggae Britannia (BBC Four, 2/11/11)
385 Willesden High Road is tucked away behind a row of dilapidated 19th century houses, its entrance obscured by high locked gates and a walled yard. But 385 is a treasure trove of reggae history. It's called Theorem, Music Village, and it's where we're recording several artist interviews for Reggae Britannia. As we arrive, there's a band in the studio rehearsing a romantic Lovers Rock number, there's a man up a rickety ladder painting the walls and another mopping up from an all night dance in the 'functions room' with its damp lino and garish red felt walls. T-Jae, the tall soft-spoken proprietor of what was once called BBMC (the Brent Black Music Cooperative) helps us with our camera gear. He's got coffee brewing in the kitchen beside an open can of condensed milk. Before T-Jae's time this was a leisure centre filled with rattle of pinball machines and the click of snooker balls - now replaced by the drum 'n bass of reggae rhythms leaking from the studio.
We're here to interview Dave Barker, one half of the Dave and Ansell Collins vocal duo who set the teenage mods alight, back in 1971, performing a novelty number called 'Double Barrel'. Dave's a quietly spoken man with a hint of a stammer. He tells us how, when he first came to this country (and he stayed here ever after) he peered out through the window of his BOAC plane as it banked over the smoking chimneys of the snow-covered houses below and wondered 'how come they have so many bakeries in England?' On the drive from the airport he was shocked at seeing white men digging the road and taking out garbage: 'Wow man, that was strange, you didn't see those things in Jamaica'. Nor dogs wearing winter vests, nor steak and kidney pies, nor that little sparrow he spied pecking the top off a milk bottle. He can't help himself: Dave sings a refrain from Matt Munro's 'Born Free' and segues into 'Summer Holiday'.
Dave arrived in the U.K exactly ten years before Theorem opened its doors to top British and Jamaican reggae artists passing through. Today, there's the legendary Max Romeo sitting on bench in the winter sunshine, his grey locks neatly tucked into a woolly beret. In 1969, Max brought his wicked song 'Wet Dream' to Britain and its risqué lyrics - which got it banned in clubs and on the BBC - made it an anthem for skinheads in dance halls all across Britain. He sings a few lines, diffidently explaining how it caused an 'upstir' among the rebellious youth of the time. He's a little ashamed of it now because, by the mid 70s, Max had embraced the wisdom of Rastafari. That was when he wrote and recorded some of reggae's most powerful and memorable music in the Black Ark studio of Lee Scratch Perry: 'War In A Babylon' and 'Chase The Devil'. When those songs arrived here, first as pre-releases and then remixed by Island Records, they inspired our fledgling roots reggae bands and then the punks and then Bob Marley too. Max intones a few lines from 'Chase The Devil', an ironic, cautionary tale that has been covered or sampled by dozens of musicians - including Jay-Z in 'The Black Album' - and was featured in the video-game Grand Theft Auto.
'I'm gonna put on an iron shirt and chase Satan out of earth' he sings. 'I'm gonna send him to outer space to find another race'. Max explains: 'The devil is the negative within the psyche. Chasing the devil means chasing the negative out of your mind.' There are people wandering in and out while he speaks; musicians carrying drums and guitars into this studio that's cold as a morgue, or dropping off an amp or a heavyweight speaker, or they've come to pay their respects to the master, with a hug or a high-five.
T-Jae comes sauntering by with a piece of carpet under his arm to help our sound recordist dampen the 'live' acoustic of the room (yes, we still have a sound recordist on our crew) and he tells me that among the band members in the studio today is none other than Bigga Morrison. Bigga's not a front man like Max, but a keyboard virtuoso and music director of renown. Reggae royalty. The band take a another break for a smoke in the yard and Bigga, immaculate in pin-striped suit and brogues, describes growing up in this country as a second generation West Indian: 'My parents had experienced troubles and threats on the streets, back in the '50s, with the Teddy Boys and such, but they wouldn't discuss those things because they wanted to keep you free from the pressures. But as we grew up, we took our message and our fight onto the streets with the roots and culture music we played in bands like Steel Pulse and Aswad.'
Later during the interview, I asked Bigga to show us how the British reggae producers, back in the early 1970s, added violins to the Jamaican imports to make them sound 'more classical'. Unfortunately, he's lost his glasses and so can't read the score. Tee Jay's on hand to send for a replacement pair. Bigga fills in time by playing us a delightful new track by his band the Skatronics, but when the glasses arrive, they're all wrong for Bigga. He wears them anyway, and peers astigmatically at the music for 'Young Gifted And Black' which is layered in symphonic-style strings. Bigga (educated at Trinity College of Music) explains how Jamaican reggae gradually transformed into a British musical experience, first through the dub sounds and conscious lyrics of hardworking roots groups like Aswad and then by the bands that went platinum: the 2 Tone crowd, UB40 and The Police. Bigga's being called back to rehearsals now, so we break for a late lunch. It's a choice of The New Golden Duck Chinese Take Away or the Caribbean place half a mile up the road. We do the walk and settle for salt fish and akee. Or rather, the others do. I choose the goat curry on plantains and soon regret it.
Back in Theorem, Bigga's at the keyboards and a couple of pretty female vocalists are delivering more saccharine Lovers Rock. And that's where we see Big Youth, in among them, gyrating his hips to the pounding bass and chugging upbeat of the guitar. He's chaperoned by a petite Italian lady from an artists' agency called Roots Rockers. She's Trish, and she's exhausted because they've only just returned from a nightmare flight from Spain. Trish is a miracle of calm and efficiency in the maelstrom of the struggling reggae business and it's clear all the artists adore her. Trish has offered us the opportunity to interview Big Youth, the toaster who excited British reggae fans with his revolutionary, rasta-inspired lyrics in the mid '70s. He's on top form today, his wiry body twisting and swaying in the interview chair as he sings lines from 'Hit The Road Jack', telling me how the great Ray Charles called him up one Christmas-time to admit that Big Youth's version was just 'the best'. 'Big Youth stole the scene,' he concludes. Modesty isn't one of Big Youth's virtues. But I can vouch for his status, and integrity. I first met him inside Randy's Record shop in Kingston Jamaica back in '77. He was checking out the sales of his album - visiting these record stores was about the only way an artist could tell how many were selling. He was as big a name as Marley at the time, and revered both on the island and over here. We met again - by chance - in Lagos, Nigeria, when he was on the run from some unscrupulous promoter. He's older and greyer now, but with no loss of energy, showmanship or sharp humour. And the red, gold and green implants in his front teeth are still there.
The filming days at Theorem haven't only been productive for our ninety minute programme, they've also been enormous fun. Maybe it's the familiarity and affection the artists have for this building, or maybe it's what they call 'the spirits' of the house: a combination of all those sounds and experiences imbedded in the cracking plaster walls, the creaky floorboards which once the feet of hallowed artists trod, or the reverberating bass you can hear down Theorem's honeycomb of corridors.
We'll be back here later in the week to interview the fiery, bubbly Lovers Rock singer Sylvia Tella, from Manchester; and Tippa Irie who came to fame DJing for the Saxon sound system, and maybe Dennis Bovell, the multi-talented producer/song writer and bass player, who did so much to anglicise reggae music in this country. Oh, and Trish says Dennis Alcapone's coming by, the dapper, bowler-hatted vocalist who brought a whole new style of toasting to these shores with songs like 'Guns Don't Argue': 'Don't call me Scarface, my name is Capone, C-A-P-O-N-E!'
For him, we'll haul our equipment boxes down the dark corridors of Theorem (we never could find the light switches, thriftily hidden away in recesses above door frames). Because we'll place him in a room, behind the studio, which is every reggae fan's dream, an Aladdin's cave of antique tape machines and mixers, and an expansive crimson casting couch. The wood-trim Rainderk desk dates from the early '70s when Reggae first exploded onto our pop charts with songs like 'Young Gifted And Black', bringing an upbeat musical thrill not just to those of Caribbean origin and the packs of skinheads who followed them around the country, but to the whole nation. This mixing desk was donated by Pete Townshend of The Who. It has made history since, recording reggae artists like The Wailers, Gregory Isaacs, Aswad, Janet Kay, Maxi Priest ... and so many more.
The traffic's slow on Willesden High Road as we leave the studios and T- Jae waves us into the evening gridlock and shuts the gates. Back-in-the-day, Theorem would be filling up with dreadlocked musicians and their natty entourage, ready for another all night session. Sometimes it still does, but with the proliferation of cheap home studios and a music industry in crisis, it's a whole lot quieter now. No sessions tonight. Just the rattling pipes, the whispering corridors, the vacant studio and the ghosts of British reggae history.

Many musicians select to release their songs under Artistic Commons licenses , which give you the authorized proper to do issues like use their music in your movies. Many of these research look particularly at how music impacts reminiscence, as well as what genres of music may have essentially the most optimistic impression. We'll dig into these research, forums.adobe.com but here is a spoiler alert: classical music is most persistently discovered to have the most important optimistic impression on reminiscence, but it surely's not that straightforward. So first, let's dig into how our brains form reminiscences. If you're bimusical, you have a tendency to have interaction a bigger community of the brain when you hearken to the 2 kinds of music," Wong said. MIDI files contain loads of information. Something in there might be read by computers and used to group music into totally different sets. To date, none of these attempts have been in a position to seize the exact genres of music that we outlined as people. Possibly they never will, as a result of quite a lot of relevant information is not in MIDI information in any respect. Most well-known Russian classical music composer wrote in a wide range of genres. He composed symphonies, operas, concertos, chamber music, sacred choral music, overtures, suites and ballets. Some of his greatest known works include his three ballets The Nutcracker, Swan Lake and the Sleeping Beauty, Marche Slave, First Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, Overture 1812, Symphony No. 6, Fantasy Overture (Romeo and Juliet), Serenade for Strings and opera Eugene Onegin. Banda is a blend of virtually all the genres of the Mexican music, like the corridos, boleros, baladas, cumbias, rancheras, and likewise rock and pop. Banda is principally a big brass-based mostly form of music that mainly relies on percussion. It originated in the Sinaloa state of Mexico. Around 10 to twenty individuals are current in a band. The American band was banned for a very long time in Australia, in 1996 the nation stopped the sale of any Cannibal Corpse recordings and all copies needed to be stripped from music stores. The ban lasted ten years until it was lifted in 2006. The music of those days was a response to reality. The navy that ruled Nigeria for a greater part of its 58 years' independence had created so many issues. The urge to fight again was there, but all the time suppressed. Fela stood out because he stepped in aggressively together with his music. The outline of a genre is a group of patterns. Songs that share patterns may be grouped in a style that describes these patterns. You'll find these patterns in any music dynamic: rhythm, pace, progression, key, instrumentation, no matter. Drum and base is a genre of digital music that started from jungle and rave scenes in the UK in the early breakbeats characterize its kinds. Its typical beat is between one hundred and sixty to one hundred and eighty beats per minute with heavy sub basslines and bass. The popularity of this music at its industrial peak ran parallel to bounce styles of other homegrown beats within the UK including hard home and the large beat. Its subgenre contains hardstep, breakcore techstep, Darkish step, neuro funk and ragga jungle. The popular music genres in japan has influenced different genres like techno, rock, dubstep, journey-hop, house and pop. Do musicians select genres in regular patterns that form discrete complexes or are their choices comparatively unbounded? If they are bounded, what holds them collectively? How do they differ in terms of their boundary power and their inner differentiation? These questions information our analysis of the construction of genres within the MySpace musical universe. Open iTunes, go to your music library, and choose artists, playlists, or songs. Ariana Grande's "7 Rings" music video is perhaps crammed with a ton of hidden meanings and Easter eggs , however that didn't prepare me for what might be hidden in the tune itself. In keeping with rapper Princess Nokia, Ariana completely ripped off her 2017 tune "Mine" and normal it into the hit that everyone knows (and some of us love) immediately.
With the explosion of digital applied sciences and their software in music manufacturing, the 2 styles' deviation accelerated within the early to mid-90s, thank to the higher mass-attraction and marketability of New Age, and as a consequence of those new technologies' impact on digital music production, serving up the 2 genres' differing elementary ideology in different ways. While it grew to become even easier and a reasonably problem-less activity to produce New Age information, with each file farther diluting the already over-digested writing- production- and listening experience, Ambient music stayed true to its origin and took the more durable street: the problem of originality. Although not yet in a widely published approach (not that it has ever been widely printed), Ambient music began actually benefiting from the advances in digital audio- and music manufacturing, especially sample manipulation, new synthesis strategies and new digital devices and controllers. Jihadi nasheed (anasheed jihadiya) is a music genre synonymous with radical Islamic terrorist groups like Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State. Songs within the genre always have radical and violent lyrics selling the ideology and activities of those groups or glorifying their founders. (AP Photo/Matt Slocum, File)© The Associated Press FILE - In this April 18, 2018 file photo, Bill Cosby arrives for his sexual assault trial at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown, Pa. The prosecutors who put Cosby away said Sunday, April 29, 2018, they’re confident the conviction at his suburban Philadelphia sexual-assault retrial will stand. (AP Photo/Matt Slocum, File) In September of 2015, when a cascade of sexual assault accusations poured forth from dozens of women against the comedian, and the Los Angeles Police Department was conducting a criminal investigation into Cosby, he sold a 9,500-square-foot building at 3008 Main St. for $11.8 million. All three of the Main Street properties are tied to C.O.C. Real Estate LLC, which lists Cosby’s wife, Camilla, as its principal. It is unclear why Cosby is selling his portfolio. Eric Kessler, the listing agent for the properties, hung up on The Hollywood Reporter when asked to comment. Calls to Cosby’s spokesperson were not returned. Cosby faces up to 10 years for each of the three felonies he was convicted of. Sentencing is expected in the next two months, and until then Cosby remains free on $1 million bail. The judge in the trial confined Cosby to his Pennsylvania home until he is sentenced. Cosby's legal team has vowed to appeal Thursday's conviction, a process that could take years. At least 10 women have pending civil suits against Cosby accusing him of sexual assault or defamation. https://www.msn.com/en-us/tv/celebrity/bill-cosby-is-shedding-tens-of-millions-in-la-real-estate/ar-AAwBe9P?li=BBnbfcL

The much anticipated 3-Day Flytime Music Festival, kicked off to a remarkable start with the 14th edition of Pepsi Rhythm Unplugged on Day 1. The day was Friday December 21st, and from about 9pm that evening, the Eko Convention Centre was the place to be.
Concertgoers that night, will testify to the energy that filled up the room. The event which was sponsored by Pepsi and Baba Ijebu, brought a lot of unexpected and exciting moments from opening performances by Tolani Otedola, Charles Okocha, Jeff Akoh and “Able God” crooner, Chinko Ekun; to hilarious comedy from the Host Bovi, and other notable comedians. The music policy of the night was by DJ Neptune, DJ Obi and a special performance by DJ Cuppy.
For the FIRST TIME in Nigeria, Flytime Music Festival introduced their game changing seating plan of VIPs guest sitting in front of the stage and VVIP tables on risers at the back. This is just another FIRST in a long list of firsts brought to you by Flytime.
Further into the night, more heavyweight music artists were unleashed to the stage as Slimcase came on and rocked the crowd with his hip street anthems, followed by Singer, Bisola and then Ace Rapper, MI came on, and the audience went wild to all his bangers. Jesse Jagz performed right after his brother and the audience loved it.
Other entertainment that night included the Ikorodu Boiz and their ever funny skits, Sasha P brought it back with some sassiness as she did her thing and fans were reminded of her awesomeness. One of the performances that owned the night was Teni the Entertainer. The entire hall sang along to her songs word for word.
Another electrifying performance of the night was that of The Koko Master, Dbanj. His entire set was nothing short of top notch entertainment. Delivering his back to back hits like Emergency, Suddenly, Olorun Maje, Issa Banga & Oliver Twist, Dbanj gave an energetic show to a hyped crowd of enthusiastic concertgoers.
As if the concert crowd hadn’t gotten their money back in ten folds already, Flytime brought on stage; Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Falz, Timaya, Mayorkun and a jaw dropping surprise, DAVIDO. The fans went into a frenzy.
To bring the night to a tasteful end, Burna Boy came on stage and had the whole of the Eko Convention Centre in an uproar.
Anything can Happen @FlytimeMusicFestival……Save the Dates: 20th, 21st & 22nd December 2019.

World Unglued: The Best of The Week
The Growlers. Photo: Big Hassle
Now that another festival has released its lineup, we can start marching towards the inevitable overflow of SXSW in March.  This week you have a ton of options from locals as well as a sold out set from Isaiah Rashad, The Growlers, and Power Trip.  Houston, your next seven days are all planned out.
On Wednesday you could swing by Walter’s for the album release from Houston’s Talking Forever.  The four piece, makes music closest to that of Modern Baseball meets Balance and Composure, and should be worth making it out for.  The shoegaze emo sounds of Donna Hayward will be on as direct support while the highly charged fuzzy garage rock of Moth Wings will go on beforehand.  The alt pop of Rome Hero Foxes will also be on the bill and things will get opened by the indie rock of Phantompains with doors at 7 pm and tickets between $6 and $8 for the all ages show.
The Experimental Action festival kicks off in multiple venues on Thursday, but an artist meet & greet with a special menu will be on display at Cafe Brasil.  While this will be a chance to meet all of those involved with the fest from around the globe, this will also be your last chance to grab a $30 pass before the price goes up.  More information is available here for the all ages and FREE event that gets going around 7 pm.
Over at House of Blues in the Foundation Room, you could catch an intimate performance from Houston producer and songwriter Lee Lonn.  Lonn has made quite the name for himself with his smooth R&B grooves, and a live set that’s pretty impressive.  A set from DJ 4k will also be on the bill for the 21 & up show with doors at 7 pm and tickets between $5 and $10.
Under The Volcano will have the British born and Austin transplanted country tones of Sophia Johnson.  After receiving praise for her live shows, last year she dropped the catchy and twangy One Year complete with enough hooks to start a bait & tackle shop.  The 21 & up show has doors at 8 pm and a TBA cover.
Jawwaad Taylor. Photo: Svetlana Selezneva/Courtesy of Artist/Facebook
Thursday you should start off at the CAMH for the always inspired and enigmatic sounds of Houston’s Jawwaad Taylor as part of the museum’s 20Hertz series.  Jawwaad is easily one of the best artists in Houston, he dropped one of the best hip hop records ten years ago with Jneiro Jarel called Craft of The Lost Art under the name Shape of Broad minds, he’s toured the world performing with his jazz group The Young Mothers, and his style is like no one else.  What he has planned for this show should be nothing short of mind altering for the all ages event that gets going around 6:30 pm and it’s 100% FREE.
Experimental Action starts in full over at Notsuoh and the multiple venue festival featuring local and international festival is something everyone should consider checking out.  Performers from Spain, NYC, China, Serbia and more will be at the three day festival that will be at The Secret Group on Friday, and at Walter’s on Saturday.  The hours are from 8 pm- midnight each night, the tickets are between $12 per night or $30 for all three days, and the all ages event has all of the details available here.
The Broken Spokes. Photo: Uncredited/Courtesy of Artist/Facebook
Over at Big Top you can two step the night away with the honky tonk sounds of Houston’s The Broken Spokes. Playing old school country with the ease of the greats, these guys have a mix of Western Swing and pre-pop country that’s hard to ignore, and their 2016 album The Broken Spokes is like going back in time the good way.  The 100% FREE show with doors at 10 pm is 21 & up and definitely worth putting your boots on for.
Friday you could get started at Numbers for another tantalizing performance from Houston’s Dem Damn Dames at their cirque show, Cirque du So Weird.  Magic, silks, burlesque and more will be on hand as performances from LA’s Caramel Knowledge and Chicago’s Claira Bell will occur next to performances from the Dames themselves and many more.  The 18 & up show has an opening magic set from Urial Gwydian with doors at 7 pm.  Entrance to Classic Numbers immediately following this show is included with your ticket, with prices between $15 and $30 for VIP seating.
Power Trip. Photo: Southern Lord Records
At Walter’s you can make it out for the trash sounds of Dallas’ Power Trip when they host their record release party for their new album out on Southern Lord Records.  These guys are like getting smacked in the face live, and their last drop, 2013’s Manifest Decimation should be enough reason to come check them out.  Direct support from Virginia’s Iron Reagan is nothing to deny, while the metal of Houston’s Skourge will go on prior.  The thrash metal of Houston’s Omerta will also play and the crazy and insane punk of Sexpill will open the all ages show with doors at 7 pm and tickets for $15.
Last Concert Cafe will have the trippy psyched out sounds of Austin’s Golden Dawn Arkestra.  While the group claims Nigeria as home, Austin is where they’re from now though that shouldn’t really matter.  One of the most intriguing acts you can catch going, this band consisting of at least eight members brings it when they perform their mystical caravan of song craft to life with each set.  Their latest, last year’s Stargazer echoes the likes of Sun Ra while falling into an LSD laced rabbit hole.  Houston’s The Heights Funk Collective will provide direct support and Austin’s The Warplanes will go on prior.  The funky goodness of Soul Creatures will open the all ages show with doors at 7 pm and a $12 cover.
Rudyard’s will usher the return of Matt Pryor, the prolific front man for Chicago emo group, The Get Up Kids to perform a solo set.  While Pryor has been here many times, coming on the heels of this year’s Memento Mori could be the best time as it’s his most solid solo effort so far.  Dan Andriano of Alkaline Trio will be on as direct support and opener for the 21 & up show with doors at 7:30 pm and tickets between $13 and $16.
My Education. Photo: Kat Alyst/Courtesy of Artist/Facebook
Satellite Bar brings back the cinematic indie rock of Austin’s My Education.  If you want to get schooled, this is the band to give you a lesson.  Their live shows are insane and their latest album Schiphol out on March 3rd is produced by famed producer Mike McCarthy.  San Antonio’s Levees will be on as direct support where the lushly arranged and gorgeous tones of My Twilight Pilot will go on prior.  The electromechanical sounds of Houston’s The Thief and The Architect will open the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and a measly $7 cover.
If you’re up for a drive, you should consider heading out to Sugarland to the Smart Financial Centre to catch the legendary songs of Sting.  Sure, he formed The Police only to turn his back on them before cashing in for a more adult contemporary sound, but the guy is pretty impressive live.  He’ll be here in support of his latest release, last year’s 57th & 9th.  San Antonio’s Joe Sumner and the Last Bandoleros will open the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and tickets between $54 and $154.
Isaiah Rashad. Photo: Top Dawg Entertainment
In the ballroom at Warehouse Live, if you were lucky enough to grab tickets, you could catch the hip hop of Tennessee’s Isaiah Rashad.  After the heat behind his album The Sun’s Tirade, this rapper blew up and should wow all in attendance.  Lance Skiiiwalker will be on as direct support while Jay IDK will open the SOLD OUT all ages show with doors at 8 pm.
House of Blues will host the popular sounds of Austin’s Emily Bell in the Foundation Room.  Bell has criss crossed styles for a while now, but that really just proves she can sing pretty much whatever she wants.  However, if her latest single “Can’t Talk Back” is any indicator of her upcoming EP, then we should be in for a real treat at this show.  The all ages event has doors at 8 pm and it’s 100% FREE.
Charlie and the Regrets. Photo: Uncredited/Courtesy of Artist/Facebook
On Saturday things could get started when you find yourself over at Cactus catching an in-store performance from Houston’s Charlie and the Regrets.  Lead by Charlie Harrison, I’ve said for a while that this band could break out at any moment, and their new album “Rivers In The Streets” due out on 02/25 through Sony distribution should be pretty killer.  The all ages show has gratis beer for the adults, it gets going around 1 pm and it’s 100% FREE.
Alley Kat will host the fifth edition of Sur Fest featuring a slew of Latin artists.  Sets from La Sien, Mas Pulpo, and many more will be on hand as well as photography, poetry and visual artists.  There’s more information here for the 21 & up event that gets going around 1 pm with a $15 ticket price.
  Dillon Trimm+Gabe Bravo. Photo: Uncredited/Courtesy of Artist/Instagram
The Secret Group will have a benefit for Girls Rock Camp Houston at the What’s It? show.  Two stages, sets from King Finn, Another Run, Dillon Trimm+Gabe Bravo, a solo set from Justin Nava, and LA’s True American headlining among others.  There’s also a tribute to former King Finn founder Alan Huynh and so much more.  The all ages show has doors at 5 pm and tickets between $10 and $15.
Out at Dosey Doe in the Big Barn, Houston legend B.J. Thomas will swing by to perform.  Sure, he wasn’t born here, but he was raised in and around our city, he was a member of the Triumphs, and he’s also sold a ton of records.  His latest release, The Best of B.J. Thomas(Re-Recorded) is definitely proof he hasn’t slowed down either.  The all ages show includes dinner served between 6 pm and 7:30 pm with tickets between $98 and $158.
Notsuoh has the psych rock of Dallas’ Monoculture over to perform.  The four piece plays songs that teeter totter between college indie rock and psych, and their latest single “Absurd” sounds pretty tight.  The high energy of LA’s No Parents will provide their good time punk while The Prettybads will also swing by to play their brand of punk.  The indie rock of Since Always will open the 21 & up show with doors at 7 pm for the 100% FREE show.

Big Star Bar will have the punk rock goodness and crazed onstage antics of The Cops.  Not to be confused with actual cops, these guys are definitely a band you need to see sooner than later.  The Mahas will return with their garage rock sounds while things will get opened by the garage punk of Idiot City.  The 21 & up show has doors at 8 pm and it’s 100% FREE.
If you like true dance hall ska, then you should head to Rockefeller’s to catch Austin’s The Bandulus.  Straight up, one of the most impressive ska bands I’ve ever heard, their album The Times We Had is like going back in time through sound.  The rock steady ska of LA’s The Steady 45’s will also be on as direct support where the always inventive sounds of Houston’s kind of Gulf Coast swagger, Nick Gaitan will go on prior.  Tejas Got Soul Sound System will open things up with a DJ set for the all ages event with doors at 8 pm and tickets for $15.
Urban Pioneers. Photo: Uncredited/Courtesy of Artist/Facebook
Continental Club will have a barn burner in the truest sense of the words, when Albany, Texas’ Urban Pioneers drop by to offer up their blend of hillbilly and roots music.  Seriously, you don’t know fiddle until you catch this trio live, and their latest release Feast or Famine from last year is a delicacy for the ears.  Magnolia’s Folk Family Revival will be on as support and openers for the 21 & up show with doors at 9 pm and a TBA cover.
Sunday over at The Secret Group they’ll host a new show series from the team behind the Goddammit shows called Night Brunch.  Live music, comedy, and FREE food are all on hand for the diverse new show.  The doors are at 5 pm and it’s 100% FREE, and completely worth checking out.
One of my favorite local artists, The Wizard of Barge has a show over at Insomnia VGC.  This guy makes some kooky stuff so it only makes sense the the show would be titled Cosmic Kooks.  Forty plus unseen paintings will be up at this show, an opening reception music and drinks are all part of the experience for the all ages show with doors at 6 pm for the 100% FREE event.
Of course you can head to the big room downstairs at White Oak Music Hall for the garage rock leanings of The Growlers.  The garage rock on the lo-fi spectrum that this band once embodied is now traded in for a more hi-fi psych pop sound.  Of course that doesn’t mean that they can’t still bring it in person and their massively popular new album City Club should sound great in a live setting.  There’s no word of support or openers, but that could change for the all ages show with doors at 7 pm and tickets between $20 and $27.
Continental Club will bring Santa Monica’s Red Elvises over to play their blend of surf rock and rockabilly.  While the band was originated in Russia, they’ve since moved stateside and really bring their “A game” to each and every live set.   Their last album, 2011’s Live In Montana should give you an idea of their strengths.  The 21 & up show has doors at 7 pm and a $15 cover.
On Monday, Walter’s will have New York’s trippy and pop infused sounds of Landlady.  The instrumentation of what this group dos alone, is enough reason to make it out for this show.  Possibly one of the most interesting things you’ll see, their newest album The World Is A Loud Place from this year is one of the most interesting albums I’ve heard in years.  It’s like Zappa is being channeled in each and every song, but more serious in overall tone.  Houston’s Deep Cuts will bring their reformed and good times sound to the bill as direct support and openers for the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and tickets between $10 and $12.
Flower Politics. Photo: Uncredited/Courtesy of Artist/Tumblr
At Satellite Bar you can see if you think two is better than one when Carolina two piece Naked Naps drops by to play. This duo brings a garage tinged indie rock to the table and their last release the middle is pretty impressive and different.  The acoustic bedroom pop of Houston’s Flower Politics will open the all ages show.  I’m not sure if you’ve ever heard Flower Politics or not, but you should know that the mostly solo artist just dropped their 22nd album in three years. The doors are at 8 pm and there’s a TBA cover.
That’s about all that’s happening around town this week.  No matter what you decide to do, remember that making it home safe is in everyone’s best interest, and that a safe ride home is just an app away.

Trump, Cords, and Movie Franchises: Your Guide to 21st Century Living
Tumblr media
Has 21st century living got you down? No worry, here is your handy guide to navigating through a few of the stickier parts of our daily existence. Cheer up! If you are reading this, it means you don't have to worry about all the bullshit people will deal with in the 22nd century. You'll be long gone by then!
Cords: Got wifi? Okay, maybe you do. But that doesn't mean that your life isn't a spaghetti ball of annoying cords. Cord for your phone, your computer, the cable box, DVD player, TV, And let's not forget the car, which now has cords for your satellite radio hookup, your GPS, and your phone. Back in the olde days, cars and phonographs actually started by cranking them. No wires there!
Scamming scumbags. Back in the olde days, you had to have human contact in order to get scammed. That guy that sold you a diseased horse? The Three Card Monte guy on the corner? The clip joint? The used car dealer? Snake oil salesman? The local palm reader or slumlord? These were all scam artists, but they had one thing in common: they had a human touch. They approached you or even you approached them. Physically. In a street or in an office. Such encounters could be horrible. But there was at least a human connection.
Not anymore. Scammers are not only prolific, they are faceless. They contact you through emails from Nigeria, wanting money. They send you spyware, malware, and other nasty viruses for no good reason other than you clicked on their stupid link. They destroy your 401K via Wall Street shenanigans or they are at a sleazy bank that sells you a subprime mortgage. They rob you blind, and yet don't even have the decency to do it with a gun when you're waiting in line at the bank. Scamming is high tech.
Except when it isn't. Let's not forget the payday lenders, check cashing places, car title mountebanks, and other assorted legal loan sharks that charge people $300 interest on a $500 loan. They make credit card companies look like charities in comparison. Not many people pick cotton in this country anymore, but there are still virtual sharecroppers. And they have the massive debts to prove it.
It was fitting that the 2016 Republican convention was held in Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. Because the Republicans at the top like to keep their voters in Check Cashing Place economic chains. The Republicans at the bottom, of course, are those who patronize Quicken Loans. Somehow, though, no one at Fox News found the convention site an ironic choice. Enjoy putting your doctor's bills on the credit card, Debt Slave!
Paying for stuff that you used to get for free. Remember when you could watch TV for free? All you needed was a TV. In the 1980s, when I grew up, TV was free, and it was pretty good. Sitcoms, dramas, lots of movies. Lots and lots of movies. Movies were on every night. You could watch a couple movies a day if you wanted to.
And then VCRS came out. And people started paying to watch movies they used to watch for free. But it was still good. VCRs freed you from commercials. And you could watch films uncut.
Then cable started getting bigger. For a while, cable just had movies and music videos. Then they started making shows. And more people started paying for cable to watch TV. The reception was better, and you could watch delightful, well adjusted people on HBO like Carrie Bradshaw and Tony Soprano.
Then the internet got popular. TV had to step up its game in order to compete with chat rooms and unlimited free porn. If you avoided getting cable, you still had to pay for a digital converter box.
Eventually, internet and cable became part of one demonic package brought to you by the likes of the devil's intern: Comcast. Or whatever cable company to which you have access. But, no, really, Comcast is the worst.
You might find yourself paying $120 a month to keep your internet and watch House Hunters a few times a week. You might eventually ask yourself, "is this insane?" To which the correct answer is: yes.
Luckily, we have ways to get around the cable companies. Netflix never got around to putting flicks on the net. But they do have some pretty cool shows. Amazon, too. And while, we're at it, let's check out Hulu. All for a monthly fee, of course.
Talentless, useless celebrities who never go away. We live in an era where even hardcore music fans could not name a single song by a major artists such as Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, or Justin Timberlake. And these are the pop stars! Like them or not, those musicians have talent. In contrast, there is the unwashed masses of reality TV, from the bearded, backwoods shitasses of Duck Dynasty; the morbidly obese, egg-sucking gutter trash of Honey Booboo; to the sad, terminally lonely mental patients of Hoarders.
But, really, aren't we talking about the Kardashians here?
Yes, Kim and the narcissists and circus geeks that move in her inner circle represent the nadir of the American character. They are like pop culture whales that consume everything and produce nothing. They are ambiguously ethnic Frankenstein's monsters: self-absorbed androids speeding across the consumer dystopia. They are Mitt Romney's loftiest dream (rich) and his worst nightmare (morally bankrupt). The Kardashians are both one-percenters and the worst kind of takers. They are celebrities known for being celebrities.
It is no wonder that the Kardashians turned men like Lamar Odom and Bruce Jenner into shells of their former selves. That is what happens when you get too close to a black hole: you collapse.
But bashing the Kardashians is too easy. Kim and Kanye deserve each other. But as bad as they are, they are pretty harmless. Such is not the case with Donald J. Trump. Trump, like the Kardashians, represents a particularly toxic strain of the national DNA. Kim Kardashian has far too much money. But at least she's not making national policy decisions and insulting foreign leaders and major trading partners who have nuclear weapons.
Trump is the logical extension of a world that bludgeons us with reality TV stars. A man who hath not so much brain as ear wax. He is a bloviating bully--the worst fever dream of H. L. Mencken. Trump is also a man who probably has no idea who H. L. Mencken is and is too lazy to look it up.
Bad hair, bad makeup, bad faces, bad hands, bad debating, bad gestures, bad spelling, bad Tweets. Racism, sexism, xenophobia, taco bowls and KFC buckets. Trump is the embodiment of America's garbage culture. If I were, say, H. L. Mencken, I could call Trump the "Orange Menace, "The Lyin' King," or the "Fastfood Fascist."
But in his defense, I'm not sure Trump knows what is real and what is unreal anymore. He acts as if all the world is his TV show, where only he makes the rules and determines what is fact or fiction. He is a monster, but only because no one told him "No!" 40-60 years ago. We have to blame ourselves, a bit, for the crass, idiotic leadership we get.
Yet, Trump brings up the perennial question that plagues pop culture in America: is this real or performance art? Only Glenn Beck knows for sure.
Yes, the Trumps and the Kardashians will go away eventually. That's comforting if only because of its inevitability. The sad flipside is: they will be replaced by someone worse. That's inevitable, too.
Recycling pop culture, ad nauseam. Hey, did you hear they're making a new Star Wars movie?" Yeah. The only reason I know is because people have been talking about it for, like, five years.
I said that last year. And there making another one. Again.
We've been living with Star Wars for almost 40 years. The first movie came out in 1977. The last really good one was made in 1983. For the last 34 years, Americans (re: white males) have been slave to a nostalgia that knows no bounds. In the mid-1990s, Lucas re-released the original Star Wars movies. Ten years after that, he FINALLY released them on DVD (while not remastering the original movies that everyone loved so much. The DVD of Jedi, for one, looked like shit).
In the interregnum, George Lucas pooped out three very bad Star Wars prequels that made his fans wonder if they weren't living in some kind of bad dream. Lucas wisely sold the film rights to Disney, which, with the help of J. J. Abrams, is putting out some new, highly professional, very adequate, test-marketed product.
Tumblr media
The Star Wars franchise, though, is only the worst offender in a culture that recycles pop culture ad nauseam. Did you know there's a new Strawberry Shortcake show? Did you catch the reboots of Spiderman? The Hulk? Superman? Batman. Batman vs. Superman? The Robocop remake? The Total Recall or Magnificent Seven remake? Hollywood has reached a creative nadir, and we only have the people who saw Jurrasic World (which made $1.7B) to blame. But Ben Hur was a bomb, so I guess there's that.
These are just a few things you need to know on your tour through modern life. I'm sure there are other I'm forgetting. Stay tuned!
