A day of eating to support or heal your gut. Your gut will feel good, and you may even shed a pound or two. Show your gut some love!
ACV tea:
1 cup warm filtered water
1-2 Tbsps organic apple cider vinegar
2 Tbsps lemon juice
1 Tbsp raw honey
1 tsp cinnamon
dash of cayenne
BREAKFAST: Banana-berry smoothie bowl
1 cup frozen banana
1/2 cup avocado, frozen
1 cup kefir
1 Tbsp flax seeds
1 Tbsp grass fed Ancient collagen peptides
Optional toppings: thin apple slices, berries, cacao nibs, kiwi, chia seeds, raw honey, almonds, fresh mint, gluten-free granola
LUNCH: Beet hummus plate & bone broth
1/4 cup beet hummus
1/2 cup tabbouleh
1/4 cup snap peas
1 radish
1/4 cup olives
1/2 cup mixed berries (raspberries, blackberries, cherries)
1 Tbsp unsalted dry-roasted pistachios
SNACK: Banana energy bites & golden turmeric milk
Golden milk:
2 cups coconut milk
1 1/2 tsps fresh ginger, grated
1” turmeric, peeled
1 tsp coconut oil
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp vanilla extract
1-2 Tbsps raw honey
cracked pepper
*Blend 5 minutes until smooth.
Banana energy bites:
Banana
2 Tbsps almond butter
1 tsp hemp seeds
*Spread almond butter on banana & roll in hemp seeds.
DINNER: Miso butternut soup
1 tsp sesame oil
1/2 onion, chopped
1 cup cubed butternut squash, skin on
1 garlic clove, chopped
3/4 cup lima beans, drained
1 tsp vegetable bouillon
1 handful of kale, finely chopped
1 tsp toasted sesame seeds
1 tsp ginger, finely grated
1/2 Tbsp brown rice miso
Directions:
1. Sautee onion in olive oil for 5 min. Add squash & garlic, stir for a min. Add beans & bouillon, along with half a liter of filtered water. Cover & simmer for 20 min.
2. Meanwhile, steam kale for 10 min, then toss with sesame oil, seeds & ginger.
3. Add miso to the soup and mix. Top w/ sesame kale mix.
Probiotics (30-50 billion bacterial count)

I'm still surprised by that poll characterizing oatmeal as "old people cereal". Oatmeal is AWESOME, y'all.
It's cheap, especially if you buy a bigger size. You can get really nice oatmeal brands for a low price, especially in terms of cost per serving. You can get twenty servings of nice oatmeal for like seven dollars plus tax.
It's nutritious. High in protein and fiber and complex carbs that give lasting energy and keep your digestive microbiome happy.
It doesn't spoil. Keep it in an airtight container (like the awesome metal can McCann's comes in) and it will stay good until you eat it all.
It's perfect leftovers. You can make it ahead and it reheats great in the microwave. I make 4 cups of milk to 1 cup of oatmeal on the weekend and eat it for breakfast all week.
And it's delicious. It's so versatile. It's a vehicle for yum.
McCann's Irish steel cut is my favorite. Just simmer out in the stove for half an hour while you do whatever. I use plant based milk instead of water, for flavor and nutrition. My favorites are ripple, oatly, and cashew when it's in sale. Usually ripple. The steel cut has a fabulous texture and mouth feel, and is full of fiber and protein. You can find these at regular grocery stores and Amazon.
Bob's Red Mill is also great. Their quick cook steel cut oats are also yum and a lot faster than the McCann's. I get mine at Costco but again Amazon etc. This one is less common at regular grocery stores.
And then there's the brilliance of overnight oats. Stupid easy and so delicious. Add Greek or Icelandic yogurt, some fruit, and you're good to go.
And y'all, oatmeal can be sweet or savory.
Oatmeal is great with everything bagel seasoning and a fried egg. Or bacon and cheese. Or spiced nuts. Oatmeal likes Sriracha, if you're into that. Sprinkle chia seeds out ground flaxseed or hemp seeds for extra nutrition.
Oatmeal is great with maple syrup (the real stuff) or honey and dried fruit and some nuts. Re nuts, buy the cheap tiny bits of pecans or almonds (see trader Joe's). You don't need pricey whole nuts or halves. If you want to be really fancy, toast your nuts in a warm pan for a minute first.
Oatmeal is great with a blob of nut butter swirled in.
Oatmeal is great with cream and fresh berries. I like it with coconut milk and raspberries.
It's great with chocolate chips and cinnamon and butter.
Y'all. Oatmeal is fucking great.

Niji-iro Tōgarashi
Niji-iro Tetsu and Hanami Sakura were married in Kasai, Minkai Empire, in the year 4698. Together, they had eleven children. To honor her children, Sakura developed a family recipe for a zesty spice blend that she dubbed "Niji-iro tōgarashi" (literally "rainbow chili pepper"), made up of an ingredient corresponding to each child. This spice blend is the secret ingredient in Sakura's famous kitsune udon and is versatile enough to use on beef, chicken, seafood, onigiri, and a variety of other dishes.
3 Tbsp red chili flakes (Akane)
2 Tbsp dried orange peel (Orenji)
2 Tbsp nori (Haiiro)
2 tsp white sesame seeds (Shiro)
2 tsp black sesame seeds (Kuro)
2 tsp red Sichuan/sansho peppercorns (Pinku)
1 tsp green Sichuan/sansho peppercorns (Midori)
1 tsp ginger powder (Kiiro)
1 tsp poppy seeds (Mizuiro)
1 tsp hemp seeds or flax seeds (Chairo)
1 tsp shiso powder (Murasaki)

Toast the peppercorns and seeds until fragrant. Add the rest of the ingredients and toast quickly. Cool, then coarsely grind together with a mortar and pestle (or in one of those new-fangled spice grinders).
Keep in an airtight container. The flavors will degrade over time, so plan to use it all within the month.

Protein waffles makes an easy, healthy breakfast for everyone. Protein is important, but especially in the AM for those with anxiety. (You can also freeze and re-toast them).
