FFXIVWrite Day twenty-three: Suit
with @windupnamazu 's Butter
“Stupid!” Babycorn kicked at the bed. “I’m so stupid!!”  Where had her powers been when she needed them?! Floating in the air? changing someone’s fate? Casting powerful spells? They had all turned out to be useless in protecting Cherrypit. And now that he was gone she couldn’t even use her powers safely! It was either him or her, and to make that decision would probably literally end up killing her.  “How could I be so stupid…”  Babycorn dropped to her knees around the shards of glass that was once a mirror.
“Are you ready to go Bebe?”
Tilika’s voice echoed from the outside. Inside of her room Babycorn quickly shut the small passageway she had been using to look at the world Chelinka and Yuri had remade together. “Almost ready!” Babycorn yelled back. It wasn’t entirely a lie. She was all dressed up with shoes on and only missing one thing until she was ready to go out.
Now that she had fully accepted her identity as just another Chelinka out in the numerous worlds out there Babycorn knew what ‘she’ and her brother had done. Completely remaking the universe sounds like something that she would get super grounded for doing.
“They all looked so happy…” She was a little jealous. Chelinka had her brother and both her parents. Babycorn only had her brother, and thanks to her stupid mistakes there was a chance she would never see him again. She would never get to tell him how much she loved him, or how sorry she was.
Babycorn knew Cherrypit was going to be fine. Eventually he would wake up again. Everyone told her so but there was always that nagging thought that maybe she could do something about it.
She wasn’t supposed to use her Starsinger powers too much or else there would be dire consequences to it. The exact consequences were unknown to her and pretty much everyone else. Though one of those had been getting herself into a trance-like state where she looked awake but really wasn’t.
Tilika had also said her eyes had glowed an eerie golden color the whole time.
That sounded horrible. It only made her hate her eyes that much more.
Babycorn sighed and picked out a hat from a pile. It was a large white sun hat, she often wore it during fishing trips all so she could pull the brim over her eyes and cover them so she wouldn't be able to see any fish. “If it works for that…” Then the hat would work to cover her eyes too.
At least, from anyone taller than her it would.
Which was fine because almost everyone in Old Sharlayan that Tilika talked to was taller than Babycorn anyway. It always made her really small. Doubly so because whatever it was they talked about mostly flew over her head anyway, aside from a word or two.
“Okay I’m all ready!” Babycorn adjusted the sun hat on her head and just before she left to join Tilika outside, she happened to catch a glimpse of herself in her mirror. She hadn’t turned it around today. Her ugly yellow eyes stared right back at her, they were dripping with disappointment.
Babycorn walked closer to the mirror and turned it away.
That was enough of that.
Tumblr media
Yesterday Tilika had asked Babycorn if she had wanted to accompany her to the Studium tomorrow. Which was today. Tilika had to run some of her studies on Starsingers with one of the professors there and had thought that Babycorn might have wanted to do something else besides running cooking experiments in the kitchen with Cherrypit’s dolls.
She was delighted when Babycorn said yes but now she was wondering if it had been too soon in taking her outside.
Tilika looked up, today was a very cloudy day. There wasn’t really a reason for anyone to wear a sun hat in this kind of weather. Which Tilika would never say outright but when she considered Babycorn’s earlier behavior it did bring some cause for concern.
“Babycorn?” Tilika waited for Babycorn to look up at her until she continued but she never did. “Are you feeling okay? Do you want to go back home and wait for me there?”
Tilika knew that some days were worse than others for Babycorn. Sometimes there would be days where she wouldn’t care less about them, going outside and talking to all the gleamers that passed by their house everyday. Then other days Tilika would struggle to even get Babycorn to look at her.
Today was looking to be more of the latter.
“I’m okay.” Babycorn kept looking down at the ground. Her free hand tugged on her sling, something Tilika noticed that she did when she was nervous nowadays. “I think I’m just a little hungry.”
“Ooooh. I see!”
Tilika had already told Babycorn that she shouldn’t be ashamed of her eyes but it was much easier said than done.
She knew that to Babycorn the color of her eyes represented much more than just being ‘alive’ again. It meant that in her eyes she had failed in protecting Cherrypit, she had let him get hurt and in turn had broken the promise she made to him and her parents so many years ago.
No amount of tasty snacks that Tilika gave Babycorn could ever fully solve her younger cousin's dilemmas.
“Hey I have an idea.” Tilika stopped walking and though they were just a few more minutes from reaching the Studium, she turned and began to lead Babycorn down another path. “Why don’t we go get something to eat first? I hear the Last Stand has some new food on the menu we can try!”
“Like what?”
‘Wow she’s really in a funk…’ Normally Babycorn wouldn’t care less about the specifics of food. Tilika always got a ‘leap before you look’ sorta vibe from her. “Well…Um…?” Truth was that she had no idea if the Last Stand did have any new food, that little lie was supposed to get Babycorn excited to try new food. “I’m not too sure! But we can go eat one of those tasty burgers you liked so much!”
“Oh. Okay.”
Tilika mouthed a silent ‘Yes!’ to herself. While whatever problems Babycorn had with herself couldn’t be solved with a tasty snack or a burger, it certainly could help her feel a little better. Even if it was just for today.
Tumblr media
The Last Stand was as busy as ever, maybe even more so given that it was currently the morning rush. Though the line was just a little longer than usual, neither Tilika or Babycorn had any problem with waiting and it wasn’t like they were in a rush or anything.
Having made their orders, both cousins took their seats and waited until their burgers were delivered to them.
Tilika watched as person by person kept walking up to them to thank them for helping to save the world. Babycorn would mumble a quiet “You’re welcome.” and then try to cover her face with her sun hat. Then Tilika would take control of the conversation, asking whoever had walked up to them how they were doing and to have a nice day.
Just as Tilika thought another person was walking up to them to try and talk to Babycorn, someone caught her eye. It wasn’t just another stranger walking up to them, it was also someone coming to bring them their burgers.
“Good morning Tilika! Babycorn! I got your burgers! I hope you like them!”
Babycorn knew that voice from anywhere. Her head jerked up and she found herself staring at her good friend Butter. Who she had forgotten entirely was visiting Old Sharlayan for the time being. “Butts?!” What was he doing here???? Specifically?!
Butter smiled as he dropped the bag he was holding into Tilika’s hands. “I’m just helping out here a little!” He could have sworn that he told Babycorn about this already but maybe he had told her while she had been asleep in bed. “I kinda just needed something to do and..Well-this is just where I landed!”
“Oh…”
That’s when Babycorn realized something.
Butter was shorter than her.
Without so much as a warning, Babycorn jumped out of her seat and took off running, pulling her hat down as she ran. “Bebe?!” Tilika jumped up to run after her but was surprised at just how quickly Babycorn had run off, there was no sign of her anywhere. “Damn it…” Tilika whispered to herself.
Tilika decided to do what she did best and ask people around if they had seen where Babycorn had run off to, trying to gather enough clues to deduce in which direction she had run off in and where she could have gone.
She failed to notice that Butter had also run off, just as fast as Babycorn.
Tumblr media
“Excuse me!!”
Butter maneuvered his way around another person that had been walking the opposite way he had been running. Being small was something that really got on his nerves sometimes but it did have its advantages. Like making it easier to run past a large group of people.
Eventually he had followed Babycorn all the way to the edge of the water.
Babycorn was sitting behind a large crate just out of view. She was resting her head on her knees, quietly crying to herself.
Butter walked closer to her and stopped just short of reaching her. There was no plan for what to do next, but he couldn’t stand by and watch Babycorn be sad. If anything, Butter didn’t want to leave her to cry all by herself.
Butter carefully took a seat a little bit next to her, not too close and not too far. “Is everything okay?” Well duh! No it’s not! Why are you asking thaT?! “I-I’m sorry if I did anything it’s-!!”
“It’s my eyes…” Babycorn pulled down the brim of her hat even further, stretching it further than she ever had. The thought of ripping her hat never even crossed her mind. “They’re ugly. I hate them.” What else was she supposed to say? That was the basic gist of it, and yet despite that Babycorn kept talking.
“They just-remind me of how I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t save Cherry…”
At some point Butter must have seen her eyes at their worst, when she had been bedridden for who knows how long. Tilika told her all about how her little boy friend would come and bring gifts to her and leave in a hurry. That couldn’t have been anyone but Butter. “I’m sorry you had to see my stupid eyes Butts.” Her hideous eyes that were good for nothing but telling people that she was a failure.
Butter gently placed his hand on her’s, once he did Babycorn’s grip on her hat slightly loosened as she turned her head just a little to look at him.
“Um, I think they’re pretty.”
“HeEh?!”
That comment had caught Babycorn so off-guard that her heart started beating just a little too fast.
Babycorn had wanted to say something like, ‘What are you talking about?!’ or ‘You’re crazy!!’ but for some reason she found herself so flustered that she found herself incapable of saying anything besides, “P-Pretty?!”
Honestly Butter was crazy, but crazy in another sense. And for a certain person sitting right next to him.
“U-Um…! Yeah!”
Babycorn didn’t know what to think. “Eve-Even if I let everyone down? I…I couldn’t do anything to help Cherry. Everything I could do…! I couldn’t do it! I couldn’t do anything…!” There must have been something different she could have done. Anything.
“I think…You didn’t let anyone down. Especially not Cherry.”
Babycorn didn’t know what to think. “I…didn’t?” That couldn’t possibly be right.
“I don’t think anyone could have done what you did any better than how you did it.” Butter leaned back and looked up at the cloudy sky above them. Having grown up the way he did, Butter understood what Babycorn was going through more than the usual person did, maybe even more. “If I had to do what you did with Pancake…I probably would have done the same things as you.”
Babycorn sniffled, “...What do you mean?”
“There’s not really a guide for kids like us to learn how to protect our younger siblings all by ourselves. I know you did your best, we both did the best we could!”
“You protected Pancake…”
“With a bunch of help!” Cinnamon had been a big help and even then Butter wouldn’t have traded raising Pancake for anything in the world. “Then I met all of you and things just got even better!”
Babycorn couldn’t help but think back to just how mean she used to be to everyone back then. It made her feel a little bad that Butter was calling meeting her a good thing, when she was nothing but trouble.
“Um…” Butter looked around nervously, “What I’m trying to say is um, I think you did the best you could and what happened wasn’t your fault. I’m sure of it!”
Babycorn let her hat go, her eyes were wide and she turned to look right at Butter.
“I-It wasn’t…?” She had already been told this countless times. There was something to be said however, to hear this from someone who knew just how hard it was to go through the same thing as you. Almost as if it was an almost perfect reflection of their experiences. Though Babycorn would never wish for Butter to understand her experiences completely.
“It wasn’t!” Butter repeated. He still wasn’t quite sure what had happened to Cherrypit but he was still sure of his stance. No matter what. It wouldn’t be until after he left Old Sharlayan that Lunya would tell him what exactly happened. Then he would find himself weirdly disappointed when he learned that Zenos had already been killed.
“Huh.” Babycorn slumped down, “That’s weird…” She touched one of her eyes with her hands and looked down at it.
“Hmm?”
“I kinda feel a little better?” Not completely but a start was a start, for today.
“Oh! I’m glad!” Butter was happy he could help. Even just a little.
The two decided to sit there and watch the ocean waves for a little while. Until Babycorn spoke up again. “So, um…?” Babycorn tapped her fingers together, “You said my eyes looked pretty…?”
At that moment Butter realized exactly what he was doing. His face blushed a deep red. “D-Did I say that?! When did I say that?! I-I mean they are pretty but-but I mean I-?! Um…!!!!” What had gotten into him?!
“Do my eyes look like something?!” Whenever Babycorn was able to hear Airy reading one of those cheesy B’ig romance novels to herself she would often hear lines about how someone’s eyes reminded them of the ocean or of a grassy hill or whatever. She couldn’t quite remember.
“T-They…Look like eeeeyes…?”
HE WAS BLOWING IT.
“Wow! Thanks Butts!” Babycorn accepted the compliment nonetheless. Very much like a normal person would.
Butter, an equally very normal person, found that he couldn’t quite keep his mouth shut. “I guess…They sort of remind me of the sun.” He could still remember the first time he had seen Babycorn’s eyes. It was almost like he had been blinded like the sun itself, but not in a bad way.
“...You’re not supposed to look into the sun!” Babycorn reminded him. She had learned that lesson the hard way many years ago and kept re-remembering it until it finally stuck just last year.
“I-I mean like-sunlight?” Butter didn’t quite know how to explain it. “The way it sorta…shines down on everything in a really warm light. The little sun rays that peek through the window sometimes and if you put your hand in them they feel nice. And like the way the sun sometimes breaks through the clouds on a really cold day and you can feel it almost hugging you. Helping you to be warm. Sorta like that.”
Babycorn was feeling really dizzy.
“They suit you!”
Tumblr media
Tilika, who had eventually tracked Babycorn down, had watched the whole exchange from a distance.
She munched down on her burger, tears on her face. “They’re so cute… What the heck?” Tilika was resisting every urge in her body that was telling her to run up to Babycorn and hug her and tease her about how she just needed a cute boy to make her feel better.
“Ugh! Tell me about it.” Lunya agreed.
“WHATTAHECK?!”

i was in the middle of answering asks but i NEED to get some thoughts out about meeth and how losing tilika and aleria affected her. she’s largely treated as comic relief aside from her backstory, similar to al, but if you really think about her for more than a few minutes you realize she’s one of the more tragic characters in the game. during the collapse of rela cyel, meeth was actively looking for tilika and was only stopped from going back in because al convinced her not to (which, as an aside, makes me question if meeth holds anything against al for that? but that’s for another post)
then after the timeskip she’s trapped in the ruins of rela cyel, the same place where tilika died, no doubt reminded of her inability to save her or aleria from the lunites. she was there for so long that her mental state deteriorated and the fact that this is only acknowledged as a joke is fucking criminal (and in my opinion symptomatic of a larger problem regarding female characters in… a lot of things, but i’m talking ff here)
i also think, and this is delving strictly into headcanon and fanfiction here, that at least a small part of the reason that meeth cares so deeply for yuri and chelinka is because she sees it as a chance to get right what she thought she failed. not that she sees them as a replacement for tilika, she could never do that (it’d be an interesting character flaw though and imo it’s an interesting concept emotionally, but that’s likely just me reading too far into the ds rpg for 10 year olds again. she could’ve had a character arc about growing to see the twins as their own people rather than emblematic of where she went wrong, like the idea i have of al growing to preserve others’ lives because of love and not their social status. but that’s just fanfic territory)

MADELON - FINAL FANTASY CRYSTAL CHRONICLES: RING OF FATES S/I
Tumblr media
name: madelon tribe: selkie / clavat age: 28 (pre-timeskip), 31 (post-timeskip) occupation: tailor
BIOGRAPHY:
during most of their childhood and early adult years they lived with their family in a certain district of rebena te ra, what is now old town - this district was particularly vulnerable to flooding from heavy rainfall, as the architecture was in a constant state of disrepair.
when madelon was around 11-12, they happened upon a journal written by their mother, which revealed that they were supposed to have two siblings before them, but they died during childbirth. to honor these siblings they never had, madelon made twin dolls and transferred a part of their soul into each of them, dubbing the boy calca and the girl brina. as an aside, due to the ‘sharing’ of the soul, madelon is able to control the dolls as if puppeteering them, but if one of them is significantly damaged, madelon will share the pain, and vice versa. as a result, madelon is very evasive when fighting and uses magic instead of close combat. they can communicate via telepathy, so instead of 'using' calca and brina, they exist alongside madelon, almost like parts of them.
as for their role in the game’s story! madelon became acquaintances and then trusted friends of sir latov and lady aleria, as well as meeth and alhanalem, the latter two madelon formed a particularly close friendship with. they, too, helped in establishing the villa outside of rebena te ra, and live in a small house on their own, near the cliff so they can see lake cyela.
i'm actually thinking of changing the scene where cu chaspel appears and kills sir latov because frankly i found him a kind of boring antagonist, except for his redeeming trait being that he’s voiced by liam o’brien, which was cool as hell. in my hypothetical version of events, the lich shows up to the house instead, masquerading as alhanalem like she typically does, but latov's death takes on a much more dramatic turn considering that someone wearing the face of one of the family’s closest friends (and for all intents and purposes al is a part of the family too) ends up being the one to kill him. i don’t know whether i'll commit to this change or not, but regardless of the version of events, madelon is taken by blackguards from the temple who wanted to eliminate anyone associated with the events that took place at rela cyel and were there during tilika’s sacrifice, whether or not they personally witnessed it or not. they then end up in the cavern underneath rebena te ra, with the crystals subjecting them to visions of every possible past, present, and future.
MISCELLANEOUS INFO:
madelon has helped take care of yuri and chelinka since they were born as well, and their previous experience in tailoring doll clothes means that they often provide the family with new outfits — they do get a bit upset when the party commissions armor from the town shops, but their skill doesn’t extend to any sort of protective gear or clothing, so “it can’t be helped”, as they would say.
madelon also often accompanies alhanalem when he gathers medicinal herbs, because some of the plants that grow in the usual locations can be refined for dyes or similar materials.
as they are a tailor, their fingers are covered in bandages, because they prick their fingers often with the needle.
the gemstone in their choker is not a gemstone, rather it is a small beetle encased in amber that was found among the ruins of rela cyel in the past - it was then fashioned into a piece of jewelry by alhanalem as a gift for them.

Two giant neatly wrapped presents set in front of the killer's room. In one is a giant collection of slasher films from Tilika of course. In the other was Zack's favorite snacks and drinks, some Christmas socks, and an ugly Christmas sweater.
Tumblr media
=“Tch...” Setting them down once he had opened them, “You shits didn’t need to get me nothing.....” consider the small smile he had good enough of a thank you since he’s bad with that sort of thing.

A medium sized box from Tilika is setting in Danny's mailbox, inside the box is a Christmas tree tie, a wrist watch with an eye in the center, and a pair of Christmas themed socks. There is also a very cheesy Christmas card inside, plainly signed.

“Ahaha, this is some great gifts from that girl that always follow Gray everywhere. Peepers like these deserve a thank you card.”

FFXIVWrite Day thirty: Amity
“My name is            .  I’m a little different from other people. I can pass through walls and talk with other people. I’m alive but at the same time I’m not? I think that makes me different. I have a little sibling! I take care of them and make sure they’re safe! I haven’t seen them in a long time but I still have to make sure they’re okay. I remember what they look like! So I will find them! If I just keep looking. I heard that they were a little sad before we last talked. I want to make sure they’re okay!  …My name is           .”
Tilika could still remember how excited Babycorn was when she had agreed to come with her on a trip to the library. Apparently Babycorn had put it together that because Tilika was so smart she must really like to read books a lot. It also helped that Tilika tended to read books while at home, sometimes even walking while reading at the same time.
Babycorn would have to yell at her whenever she was about to crash into a wall or furniture.
All that being said, when the day of the library visit finally came, Tilika was a little suspicious when Babycorn reminded her not to forget to take her sword and shield.
Tilika found that a little strange but it wasn’t too terribly odd for Babycorn herself to be sidetracked on days where she went out by herself and asked to do things for other people. Most of those things she was asked to do involved having to fight so it made sense.
It was totally normal for Babycorn to bring her scythe and staff with her.
It was at the point when Tilika and Babycorn found themselves walking in Idyllshire that she began to have some bigger suspicions. Tilika had heard some things about this place, a city that the Sharlayans developed then subsequently decided to flee it altogether.
Babycorn explained to her that a lot of other people had tried to salvage any treasures from there and eventually decided to move in since it was empty. “I see. Well it’s nice that people could find a home here!” Tilika looked around. Taking note of a drawing on a wall that had two people on there that looked very familiar.
Before she had the chance to think more about it, Babycorn led her by the hand towards the outside of the settlement.  “Let’s go! Let’s go!!”
Tumblr media
At one point Babycorn had told Tilika they would be flying the rest of the way to the library. Tilika decided that this still made sense, maybe Babycorn had just gotten tired of walking and just wanted to take it easy for the rest of the trip.
After grabbing onto a bunch of balloons and seeing the area below them it was pretty clear now why Babycorn had wanted to fly the rest of the way. There was an entire section of a bridge missing right behind where Babycorn had landed them. Along with a lot of stairs that led to the ground below them. That also explained a lot.
“Ta-da!! The Great Gubal Library!!” Babycorn proudly spread her arms and gestured towards the building still a ways in front of them.
“The Great Gubal Library?!”
“Yeah!”
“The same one that the Sharlayan’s made?! The same one filled with countless upon countless of tomes that could hold priceless amounts of knowledge?!” Tilika had heard of it and knew it was still standing but she never in a million eons would have imagined Babycorn knew about it. Let alone could get in it.
“I think that’s what Y'shtola said! So yeah!”
“The same Great Gubal Library that’s been abandoned for years and is probably crawling with animals that moved in because there was nothing stopping them?!”
“And a bunch of voidsent!!” Babycorn paused, “I think that’s what they are! I’m not sure!”
Tilika gulped, taking her sword in one hand shield in the other.
Tumblr media
In the end, Tilika didn’t have much to worry about, when it came to her and Babycorn’s safety at least. Both of them were freely able to wander the library at their leisure despite the clear signs that they were not alone in here. Tilika was even able to sit down and skim a book or two while not having to worry about anything ambushing her.
Instead Tilika’s worries were placed on just how easy it was for Babycorn to cut down anything that stood in front of her way.
Most of the time all it would take was one or two swings from her scythe to defeat whatever weird animal or living object decided to try and attack them.
Was Babycorn really that strong? At some point it looked like the creatures living here even realized that there was no point in trying to fight them, so most just started to avoid them altogether.
‘Of course she’s that strong idiot! She’s the Warrior of Light! She’s fought primals, you saw her!’ Is what Tilika kept telling herself. But it was hard for her to believe that the same Babycorn who she had seen accidentally sticking herself up on the roof when mixing pancake batter was the same Babycorn who was known and feared across the world as the warrior of light.
Then again, at the same time, it made perfect sense.
Somehow.
“Tili-Tili!” Babycorn came running up, “Did you find a cool book?” Babycorn was carrying a bunch of other books in her arms. Tilika noticed that she had dropped a lot more other books on her way running here. “I found a lot of them with a lot of complicated words! You know about those right?”
Tilika smiled, “You could say that.” Right now she was just skimming through one that was pretty much just a cookbook. But Tilika was the type of person who just loved learning anything about everything.
“Did you know that the garleans have a different name for each level of hierarchy?” Tilika said, referencing one of the other books she had picked up.
“Wow! Cool!” Babycorn had no idea what Tilika was talking about but she still wanted to support her. “I think this one is about dragons!” Babycorn waved a book in the air, “Cause it’s got a dragon on the cover!”
Just as Tilika was going to ask her what else she noticed about it, she saw Babycorn drop the book to the ground. “Babycorn?” She noticed that her cousin was staring far off into the distance, right past her. Tilika looked behind her just in time to notice a shadow turning around the corner and running away.
Babycorn ran right after it. “Babycorn wait!” Tilika cried out, but Babycorn had already turned the corner after the mysterious shadow. “Babycorn!” She grabbed her sword and shield hanging at her side and brought them out.
Tilika had a bad feeling about this. It was good to be prepared.
It didn’t take a lot of running for her to catch up to Babycorn. “Babycorn?” She found her cousin knelt down in front of a pile of books. “What’s going on? Is everything okay?” Tilika kept a tight grip on her sword, just in case.
“I’m fine!” Babycorn pointed at the pile of books in front of her, “I think there’s someone in there!”
“Is it someone dangerous?”
Babycorn shook her head, “I don’t think so. Look!”
Tilika looked at where Babycorn was pointing but she still couldn’t quite see what she was looking at.
That was until a small backpack peeked out at her from under the pile of books.
“Oh!” Tilika was almost surprised at what she was seeing. Though considering that she had seen both living tomes and inkwells inside this library, the shock of seeing what looked like a living backpack wore off pretty fast.
“Hi!” Babycorn stepped forward, “My name's Babycorn! Who are you?”
The backpack wiggled their arms around. At least, Tilika thought those were arms. It had a mouth with big sharp teeth but no matter how much their mouth moved she couldn’t hear any words coming from it. From the way Babycorn was also staring blankly at them, it was safe to say she couldn’t hear anything either.
“I think their name is Hungstla!” Babycorn picked the backpack up and didn’t even jump when the backpack wrapped its straps around her. “Ha ha! That tickles!!”
Or maybe she had heard something?! That was odd but not the weirdest thing about Babycorn.
“I guess it's friendly…” Tilika put her weapons away and walked closer to look at the weird friend that Babycorn had made. “Hello there! My name is Tilika!” Having known Babycorn for nearly two years now, Tilika had found herself more accepting to talking to supposedly inanimate objects. Because most of the time, they were not inanimate.
Tilika held out her hand and the backpack gladly shook it.
“And it’s polite wowie!”
“Can we take them with us?!” Babycorn pleaded, holding her hands together and looking up at Tilika. The backpack also looked at Tilika, with huge pleading eyes. Somehow.
‘Wow she’s wasting no time.’ Tilika saw this coming. Normally Tilika would be a little apprehensive about letting something like a magical sharp-toothed backpack live in her home but it couldn’t possibly be any less dangerous than the other things that lived with her and Babycorn.
“Well I mean, if you want to! It’s up to you!” It’s not like she was her mom or anything.
Hungstla seemed to understand that she would be able to come along and happily wiggled around. “Aw, look at them go!” Tilika laughed, “It's kinda cute isn’t it?”
“Really cute!” Babycorn hugged Hungstla tighter. Then Hungstla used their arms to reach down into its own mouth. To everyone’s surprise it pulled out what looked like a freshly baked chocolate cake.
“Woah!!” Babycorn was drooling, “That looks delicious!!”
“What.”
Tilika tried to wrap her head around how something like that could even be possible. Unless there was a bakery in here that they missed (which would be impossible to do if Babycorn was here) there was no way a backpack that had been in here for who knows how long would have food inside it that looked that good.
It defied all explanation.
That settled it, somehow this weird backpack and Babycorn were meant to meet each other.

the implications of the multiplayer universe in rof is so interesting to me because after king kolkas aide is freed from the lich she says she played a large role in tilikas education

had the thought of madelon and meeth discussing what happened at rela cyel, and how meeth views it as her biggest failure since she was tilika’s tutor and aleria’s handmaiden and should’ve been there to prevent tilika’s sacrifice
and madelon would say it’s not her fault, thinking “no, it’s my fault” even if they didn’t really have control over the situation either, they’re just awful with comfort and hate seeing their friend blame herself for something that shouldn’t have happened… meeth is naturally hot-headed and prone to holding grudges, so it would break madelon apart to see her turn that inwards on herself
but if i want to take what is likely a bad faith reading of his character in the rela cyel flashback scenes, i think alhanalem may have been partially responsible through his words and inaction. it’s true that he had the citizens prioritized first and was in charge of making sure that they are all evacuated safely, but when latov and aleria go back for tilika he tries to convince them not to, because it would be suicidal and they aren’t considering their own positions… which really makes me wonder how differently the scene would have played out if madelon were there (they are in my version of things, but i haven’t considered their role very extensively until now since tilika’s death would be constant in every world)
meeth took huge issue with al choosing to leave aleria and latov behind, and madelon absolutely would too. he says there’s nothing else that can be done, and that makes meeth admit defeat too (probably because (in my interpretation/headcanon) she kind of devalues herself)
in that scene… madelon wants to argue, but decides against it because it would make a high stakes situation already more stressful and al being a dick is important to note but they don’t want to call him out on it right then and there
so madelon takes the blame for what happened to tilika, before they know that it quite literally couldn’t have been avoided. meeth didn’t offer a counterargument either and maybe that makes her self-blame worse.

FFXIVWrite Day eleven: Once bitten, twice shy
Babycorn hit the ground, hard, and with a loud snap.  Her staff had flown out of her hands and had landed just next to her.  “Come now! Is that all you can muster?!” Her opponent taunted her, he was on his last legs just like her. “Rise! Rise once more! It mustn’t end yet!”  Slowly Babycorn rose to her feet, staff back in hand. She began to laugh.
“Tilika I think I’m done with dying.”
Tilika looked up from her magazine with bewilderment plastered all over her face. “What brought this up?” Aside from the obvious, that being that Babycorn was currently confined to a bed while she recovered from her more serious injuries after facing off against the Endsinger and Zenos consecutively.
“First of all-! Dying is no fun!” Babycorn tried to cross her arms, forgetting that one of them was currently in a sling. She looked confused for a second about where to put her arm until she decided to just let it hang loose to her side.
But she wasn’t happy about it.
“Another thing! It really hurts!”
Sure, Babycorn couldn’t remember much of the first time she died but if the pain her scar from the first death occasionally brought her was anything like how it actually felt, then she could safely say that it must have REALLY hurt. “So stupid…” Having been stuck with the pain for so many years let Babycorn get used to it but she did find it hurt just a little extra back in Ultima Thule.
Babycorn decided she didn’t want to think about how much stuff hurt anymore, so instead her mind shifted back into snack more.
She stretched her arm to try and reach one of the various candies that had been gifted to her over her recovery. Along with several other candies and flowers sent by secret admirers the world over and closer to home.
There was something in Babycorn’s head that was tricking her into thinking she was much taller than she usually was.
Tilika let out a stifled laugh. Her plan to make sure Babycorn didn’t eat all the (unwrapped) chocolates at once was proving to be a success. She felt a little bad for doing it but if it was for Babycorn’s sake she would do pretty much anything.
She put her magazine down and walked over to pick a couple of chocolates for Babycorn and one for herself.
Tilika made sure to unwrap the chocolate in front of Babycorn. Just to really sink it in her head that you needed to unwrap candy before you ate it and the plastic around it was not just ‘the candies shell.’
“You can’t eat too many right now.” Tilika said, reminding Babycorn of her fragile state, “But I promise once you’re out of here I’ll treat you to an All-you-can eat chocolate buffet!!”
The chances of a place like that existing were very slim but Tilika was sure she could find something close to it, for Babycorn’s sake.
“Reallyy??” Babycorn’s eyes were twinkling all with the allure of diving head first into a fountain of chocolate. Just like she tried to do back when she and everyone explored some Arbor-tarium or something.
“Really!!”
“I love chocolate….” Babycorn closed her eyes. She was drooling.
If Tilika couldn’t find some place with unlimited chocolate then she would just buy out every piece of chocolate in Eorzea if that’s what it took. Tilika handed Babycorn the chocolate and watched as she threw it into her mouth and ate it all in one bite.
“There’s going to be so much chocolate that you’re going to get full!” Just had to make sure Babycorn didn’t eat too many and give herself a tummy ache. It was a hard balance to keep.
“And Cherry can come too!”
“And…?” Tilika was caught off guard for a second. “R-Right! Of course!”
It came as a shock, Babycorn hadn’t mentioned Cherrypit for weeks and when anyone tried to bring him up she would shake her head and walk away. While it was a shock, it wasn’t entirely unwelcome.
Tilika smiled, “I’ll make sure there’s enough for both of you!” Which would have to be a LOT of chocolate now that she thought about it. Oh well.
“And-And-! You too!!” Babycorn cheered, raising one of her arms in the air. “It’ll be a Chelinka and Cherry and Tilika partyyyy!! Yippee!!”
“Yippee!!” Tilika echoed.
Tilika ended up giving Babycorn more than half the box of chocolate because she asked very nicely. And really, who could resist those little pleading yellow eyes of her’s? Absolutely no one could, Tilika tried to convince herself. It was absolutely impossible.
“And you know what else-?!” Babycorn said with a mouth full of chocolate.
“Hmm?”
“When you die and come back-everyone's mean to you sometimes!” Babycorn moved her left shoulder around for no reason in particular. “They should be happy you aren’t dead! And not saying you’re like a scary monster or you should be dead!”
“Babycorn…”
Tilika hadn’t seen any of the anger towards Babycorn and Cherrypit that she described to her first hand. History did give a reason for the people of Ul’dah to have such a negative opinion of the undead but, in Tilika’s opinion, that was no excuse to have treated a pair of children like they had.
Tilika only hoped that there was no one that still thought of them like that.
“You’re right. That would be horrible…”
What else could she say?
“Dying isn’t fun either cause then…You don’t know if you’re gonna come back…”
Tilika silently watched as Babycorn played around with her fingers.
“...Was it scary for you too Tilika?” Babycorn’s voice was almost a whisper. She looked surprised that she even managed to ask the question at all. “Never mind…” she tried to say but Tilika wasn’t going to let her walk away so easily.
Tilika took in a deep breath, “To tell you the truth I don’t really remember much of it.” That was the whole truth. It had felt like she had just gone to sleep for the night and then woken up in a field of flowers. “I just remember wanting to protect you and then…nothing.” It hadn’t really registered to her that she had ‘died’ in a sense until now honestly.
“I’m glad it didn’t hurt…” Babycorn mumbled.
“Me too!”
Babycorn laughed a little at that.
Tilika took a seat at Babycorn’s bedside, making sure not to mess up her bedsheets too much. “But if you ask me, I’d do it all over again. Just to keep you and Cherry safe.” She picked up a corner of the blanket to wipe Babycorn’s tears away, only to be stopped dead in her tracks when she saw a pair of wide eyes staring back at her.
“N-No…Please don’t say that…” Babycorn whimpered. “Please don’t ever s-say that…”
It didn’t take very long for it to dawn on her to what Babycorn was trying to tell her.
Babycorn wasn’t just sick of dying.
She was sick of death itself.
Tilika wasted no time in embracing Babycorn in the most gentle hug she could.
“I don’t want that to happen! Ever again! D-Don’t…tell me you want to do that…”
It didn’t take Tilika long for her to guess that Babycorn was talking about what happened at Ultima Thule. The way that the Scions all sacrificed themselves one by one just to ensure that there would be a way forward. Tilika had only heard about it after the fact, seeing as she was one of the first to go.
“I don’t want anyone to leave! No more! No more…”
From what she heard Babycorn hadn’t taken it very well at all.
“Don’t leave me alone…”
She held Babycorn closer to her.
“I’m sorry.” Tilika placed her hand on Babycorn’s head and tried her best to soothe her as she sobbed. “I promise I’m not going anywhere. I’m staying here with you and Cherry.” She hoped that her words had reached Babycorn, in any case she wasn’t just going to say these words and not mean them.
Tilika decided then and there that she would do whatever it took to stay at the siblings' side for as long as she could.
Babycorn held onto Tilika like she was going to disappear at any moment.
Something that had been closer to reality than Babycorn ever wanted to admit.
