no pressure to answer and im sorry if you've said this before but where did the title new/old/rare come from?
It's named after a very average record label compilation that I bought way back in 2002 because it included a song I couldn't get anywhere else by a band I used to go see all the time. I always liked the title and it seemed appropriate for this project for a range of thematic reasons, but also Blueline Medic came from a band called Caustic Soda, who wrote a song called Photocopied, which was the first song I successfully turned into visual artwork, and I discovered Jawbreaker from the sticker on the bass guitar when I saw that video on Rage one night as a teenager, and then when I finally saw Jawbreaker in April 2022 I came home and wrote this comic about Louis seeing them in March 1996, which led to me figuring out the overall story of what had up until then just been a series of loosely connected drawings.
Before everything was available on the internet, releases being old or rare often meant you couldn't get them, you might not ever hear/see them, and new releases may take months or even years to become available to you. Part of being into film and music was searching, archiving, collecting, sharing, bootlegging, waiting, and speculating. These days I likely wouldn't have to buy a whole CD just to hear one song. Smalltime local band singles are available on Bandcamp, not just at their shows. Archives of old or niche films are often hosted on streaming sites, or even lovingly restored and rereleased. This is all cool and I enjoy it, but it's new. Please remember that it's new, that in my relatively short lifetime it has changed hugely.
People have always cared and now it's so much easier to share these things, but there's still value in things being tied to times and places, in parts of life being ephemeral and transitory. I think you need external markers of times in your life that you can revisit or avoid as you choose, otherwise you'll end up adrift. Something being rare or limited isn't always bad; of course we don't get to experience everything we'd like to and it's important to pursue and value what you can. I pursued live music single-mindedly from when I was 12 or 13 until I moved overseas at 19, and while I've never stopped going to see bands or being very into music, that particular time of my life was unique. I can't replicate it and I don't want to because as much as I joke I've not changed (and wear band t-shirts I bought in 2001), I'm not the same person. I still remember though.
This story is partly about the balance between digging through the past and making space in your life for new things, about handling change and choosing what to let go, what to archive, what to keep, what to keep looking for. It's also literally about music and film.
Most of the places I used to go are gone now of course, and most of the bands have broken up and moved on. I'm gone too, I live on the other side of the world, but I like to put references in my work. I guess it's my way of saying this happened and it was important to me, these things other people made, those places, that time, they were small and brief but they mattered and I remember. Some things don't come back and all you have is memories of them, but sometimes bands who broke up in 1990 do a reunion show and you score a ticket.
Don't count on it though. Enjoy what you can when you have it, and if you miss it, don't dwell too much. Looking for the next thing to be excited and intrigued by is the best way to find it.
In the comic linked above, when Neil says they'll have a chance to see Jawbreaker together soon, he's wrong: Jawbreaker broke up a few months later and didn't play again until 2017. I think they would have gone together then though, I think they both remembered.

Good Stuff: Orion and the Dark
Tumblr media
You know? I remember playing Pajama Sam 1 many moons ago and to this day I find it lovely to play. Great characters, incredible artwork, the differing routes each playthrough which I didn't even realize until then, and the ending which really stuck with me. That what was kept me anticipating Orion and the Dark, as I felt it was that spiritual successor I never knew I wanted. It sucks that Dreamworks dropped this onto streaming like it was nothing, not even on the site they own no less, but I genuinely looked forward to this and that's what matters. Now that it's out, let it be known I can't believe this will be the first Charlie Kaufman film for me. Just saying, any interest in his previous movies is gonna feel like whiplash.
Tumblr media
Just imagining some kid loving Orion & is eventually in awe for a movie called I'm Thinking of Ending Things
To truly start this review, this might be the best kino non-Pixar Pixar movie Dreamsworks ever made. I didn't think of it having the whole "what if X had feelings" factor until now but I actually like that they take it not only in a reasonable direction, but twists the dynamic in a way Pixar honestly hasn't done since... Toy Story 4 I guess? No spoilers, but I enjoyed that Darkness and his entity friends have their insecurities, this is before they all met Orion, and they take that in a very great if offputting direction. Plus I love that they were able to personify these elements I didn't actually think about when it came to night time. They also present the biggest problem with the movie and that's the lack of real camaraderie with the entities and Orion. You enjoy the friendship between the boy and Darkness, but they streamline the bond Orion has with the others and that really makes the story hit or miss depending on if you grow to care about them. I brought up Pixar and yeah, while they have their great individual moments they don't have the same effectiveness dynamic wise as the emotions from Inside Out. Also small nitpick, but I didn't like that Dark's name is "Dark" and not "Darkness"; doesn't roll of the tongue, you know?
Tumblr media
Plus we didn't get Orion and Dark playing Cheese & Crackers like missed opportunity of the year
Now again, this is my first Charlie Kaufman film, but I was familiar with his writing style and I gotta say I loved what he does with the structure of the story. It's a story within a story where as soon as the curtain is pulled, I was fully hooked. I love how Orion essentially helps himself overcome some of his fears both thanks to unexpected but welcomed help and developing his own confidence. It was clever how when you put a face on a fear, that fear slowly fades but the film shows that it's not something capable of a cure. Orion's neuroses dilate thanks to this adventure, he probably wouldn't have lived to tell it if otherwise, but it presents that growing up doesn't mean everything will work out perfectly or immediately. Does it do a lot to get to that point? Yes, but I felt the risks paid off in a way I don't think I've seen before in a story like this. I know as a kid I didn't have constant paralyzing premonitions regarding the worse outcomes imaginable like Orion, but on some level I remember what it's like and how it'll still fester your mind as you get older. This film, pun unintended, gets dark on a personal level and will probably stick with me long after watching it.
Tumblr media
Can't say this scene broke me, but damn did it get close
Orion and the Dark impressed me as something thought-provoking, that does a lot more than being another adapted storybook. Is it an insanely masterful modern Dreamworks movie like Puss in Boots 2? No, even with its great subversions the movie doesn't juggle everything as well as I hoped. Then again, I highly appreciate that this was a risky movie Dreamworks was willing to release, that got both Kaufman and Werner Herzog of all people on board, as opposed to shelving it like some companies I know. A movie that doesn't spell everything out, that gets to be a family movie not constantly upbeat but colorful and optimistic in all the right ways. Orion deserves a chance where I think everyone will have interesting takeaways even if it won't be their favorite Dreamworks film in recent years. I'm overall glad I saw it and kinda want to see it again soon for missed details.

I drew this, please stop reposting it without credit!
a sort of indulgent rant :P
Tumblr media
[original post as proof]
Since the wider internet is talking about plagiarism I think it's a good time to start talking about art theft/uncredited reposting/etc. as well and I'm particularly going to talk about my experience with it.
Before I say anything else I want to say please don't harass people who may not have a good grasp on internet etiquette! (and please assume that is the case unless someone has intentionally plagiarized/stolen people's work and credited it as their own) That is not what I'm asking you to do and for future reference if someone was excessively rude to you in calling out that you reposted my things I did not endorse that behavior. I do encourage calling out when you see people reposting art and linking back to the original work but I do not encourage harassment. On a similar note, this isn't meant to make anyone feel bad or guilty for not having a good grasp on this particular thing. This is just me explaining how it makes me feel and hopefully get people to understand why it's so hurtful so they don't do it in the future, and maybe they get to me explaining it nicely before other people explain it not-so-nicely LOL.
Some reasons why I personally don't like it when people repost my art even if this particular post is a shitpost and not something I put a whole lot of effort into:
(This list is definitely independent/fanartist-centric, I'm not really claiming this to be anything but that.)
Images get edited and distorted as the meme chain goes on, I have seen this end up with artists feeling like their art that they put a lot of effort into like all that work was a joke. Which, evidently is pretty disrespectful
In a personal anecdote, I have seen people say really rude things about me and the Blazblue community on Tumblr while reposting my things (art and otherwise) on twitter and other social media sites. It's really hurtful that people will disrespect me and my friends while using the bits and pieces they like.
Additionally, not everyone on the internet is familiar with common English-speaking internet terminology and etiquette. What may seem like a compliment or neutral statement for you may be rude to them. Generally speaking, a lot of Japanese artists take great offense to their work being reposted in any way whatsoever. ESPECIALLY if you didn't ask beforehand. People have privated or deleted works or entire accounts over this.
It takes away attention from the artist, and this isn't just people complaining about their art not getting enough likes/reblogs online. I have had my commissions open for months with next to no attention toward it and have periodically given up on promoting, with that in mind I grow more bitter about the fact that my only work that regularly gets attention isn't even representative of my current work but also isn't even attached to my name.
There are a lot more reasons, but it really is just a matter of respecting people who make the content you like and crediting people who make things you like.
If you see art that might be fanart and want to find the original source so you can either share it in a server, ask the artist permission to use it somewhere else, or sort of vigilante credit it for somewhere else, here's some places you can easily reverse search for images or find the artist who drew them (hint: if a work has been deleted it's good practice to still credit the artist)
SauceNAO - especially good for fanart since it's a curation of popular Japanese and western image sharing sites. Works best with full images. Found my art on pixiv and deviantART.
Tumblr media
Google Image Search - Unreliable, may work with popular artwork but will probably struggle to find it otherwise, very rarely found my artwork. But probably your better bet for heavily cropped images at least to find the full image and then plug it in sauceNAO
But even then the best practice is if you don't know the source don't repost it until you've found it, and always reblog/retweet/what have you from the original artist before considering reposting it on your own account. Be strict and insistent on asking if people know the source of art they are reposting especially in discord servers and online spaces where it's commonly done.

FEATHERED ARK ! your fellow meat enjoyer comes to you seeking aid with neocities coding
1) how the ass fuck do you make a damn favicon. it will NOT work for me for some reason 2) how did you do that awesome cool section in your /artworks where you can switch between sculptures and bookbinds
i might come to you with more code inquiries in the future, is that fine ?
YAYYYYY im happy to help!!
for making still img favicons i usually use this site but if you wanna use a gif for a favicon (note: gif favicons are only supported by firefox and opera, otherwise the gif will only appear as its first frame in other browsers) I think you can just use it as is, so long as its the correct size (16x16 or 32x32 px) (though technically you can use different sizes itll just be stretched out) just make sure you're putting ur code in the <head> section of ur website and linking it correctly!! I don't know what your code looks like so I'm not exactly sure what might be wrong with ur favicon tho ^_^;
as for the tabs on my artworks page, I just used this code from w3schools! with some tweaking, you can get it to look like pretty much anything. the way it works is that it gets all elements on the page with the class "tabcontent", sets their display to "none" which hides them, then once the tabs (with the class "tablinks") are clicked sets the tabcontent display to active again. w3schools explains it better I think but that's the gist of it. there are other ways to do this but w3schools is the best for beginners and is the easiest to modify.
feel free to look under the hood of my website as well if you need to!! ^_^
lmk if you need me to elaborate on anything!! and I'm always happy to help anyone that needs coding advice :3 ALSO once ur ready with ur website SHOW ME!!!!!! id love to follow you on neocities!!

Her Tears Were My Light | .:Review:. | Trying Something New!
For a long time now I've been scrambling to find a way to stay active as well as continue posting more frequently online, and I think I've settled on writing reviews, Top Ten+ Lists, and the like!
For those who don't know me, I'm Michael (Mike/Mickey/Mika), also known as "Charli" online! (He/They pronouns)
I am a mega nerd, as well as an artist and gamer who loves to make playlists and bracelets in their spare time, as well as voice over work when able! (Reading, voice acting, singing, etc...)
I might make videos at some point, I'm not sure yet, but I have been working on a script for one at some point!
This is just a quick review I wanted to try my hand at, and I apologize in advance if I'm still fiddlin' around with Tumblr to figure out how it works after all these years, haha;;
Tl;dr: This is my first review (via Tumblr on my "main" account) I'll be posting!
Today I will be reviewing her tears were my light by NomnomNami
her tears were my light by NomnomNami is a visual novel available for purchase on Steam, Google Play, and itch.io.
You can see on the itch.io site that it has a word count of 6k, as well as 3 notable endings.
It's a quick playthrough, as well as a pleasant read, and the endings are rather easy to get.
I, personally, took my time reading and processing the story and artwork, so it took me around 20 min to about half an hour.
I am an achievement hunter on Steam, so I'll mention a couple of noteworthy bits of information for my fellow completion scavengers:
There are achievements, but I believe they're in that inactive state where the game won't show as a "Perfect Game" on your account.
There are options and settings you're able to fiddle around with to speed up the dialogue and skip through it, so that helps for folks who just want that 100%;
though I will say, this was one of those games I actually sat down and enjoyed, so please take your time if you're not in a rush to have the best experience possible!
The writing was stellar with brilliantly designed characters and gorgeous yet simple art, perfectly complimented by Nami's beautiful ost for their story.
I don't want to spoil too much of the actual content in the game itself, but it was wonderful enough that I left a review on Steam, wanted to attempt a more in-depth one here, and found myself unable to resist the urge to create a playlist for it.
I mentioned on Steam as well that I also plan to share this with my fiancé later, and I might draw some fanart for it at some point.
Spoilers Beyond This Border!
。・:*˚:✧。╔═*.·:·.✧ ✦ ✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧ ✦ ✧.·:·.*═╗。✧:˚*:・。
Now that all of that's out of the way, I wanted to actually talk about the characters and some topics in the game themselves!
her tears were my light nearly had me crying; it was a touching and emotional story.
I love Space's design, Nil's writing, and Time's concept especially.
Making use of the save files was rather brilliant in my opinion, which I've rarely seen used, appropriately and well, in games- especially visual novels.
I won't include the Life is Strange franchise; it's not a mere "visual novel", and has a different tone and aesthetic.
If you like time travel and lgbtqia+ friendly stories with deep and excellent writing though, I do highly recommend it.
I actually felt disappointed that it was so short- when usually I'm nearly complaining that the viznovs I play, even the ones I like, cough Danganronpa cough are so long.
There was so much heart and soul put into these characters you only know for such a short period of time that it feels so abrupt having it end so quickly... after having made such a fuss over how long Nil waited for Time.
I can't stress enough, this isn't a complaint about the game- quite the opposite, honestly.
This feels like the perfect transition that could be used to go over a different review for another game by the same creator which I've considered doing, and I wasn't able to leave one for it on Steam because I had borrowed the game via Steam Share with a close friend of mine.
The game was the perfect length, honestly.
I had just enough time to complete it without stressing about finishing it; but it also still had enough content, good and interesting content, to leave at least me with a desire to play it again.
her tears were my light leaves the player with enough of (aforementioned) content to consume that they can create their own ideas and headcanons, aus, fanart, songs, and the like with their own creative minds.
Before I head out, I will say:
I personally prefer the ending where everyone is happy. Ɛ':
Hi, there!
I'm Michaela! Aka Michael, Mickey, Mike, Mika, etc... or Charli, as I go by online!
I'm an artist and gamer who loves cosplaying and voice acting, as well as making playlists, bracelets, and props in my spare time!
Wanna support me and/or see more content from me?
I do commissions, and occasionally requests!
If you have any ideas for a game, movie, show, anime, manga, comic, book, etc, that you want me to check out and review, lemme know in the comments or hmu via dms, Discord (CharliDrawz#9544), or my email ([email protected])!
as for commissions, you can contact me the same way if you're interested in an art piece or hiring an artist to help with a project!
I have a carrd for that (which might need to be updated) with info on what I do and don't do!
I am open to ship/pairing drawings, fanart, backgrounds, etc...
I don't do overly explicit NSFW or gore, nor do I do anything too overly detailed, realistic, or mecha.
I can do cartoony styles, furry/anthropomorphic art, 2d drawings, etc... but I will not draw a character without a reference.
I don't do full complete animations, but I am up for trying short moving avatars for a price.
I also do Spotify, SoundCloud, and YouTube playlists!
(I haven't used SoundCloud in a while, though; I apologize if it's a mess in there.)
These are a lot cheaper, and are easier for me to make!
Prices start from around 50¢ for super short 5-10 song playlists, to $10+ for a full hour/100+ track playlists.
(Whichever is reached first. The price depends on the length and how long it took to make it.)
‧˚₊꒷꒦︶•☽────✧˖°˖☆‿୨♡୧‿☆˖°˖✧────☾•︶꒦꒷‧₊˚⊹
Did you like this review?
Feel free to share it with your friends and repost!

With the recent news, I figured now might be a good time to remind everyone where you can find me.
YouTube - sassycat143 This has been my account for like 14 years, any links to my other socials will be listed on that channel, so it's a good place to keep a permanent bookmark on me. I also have a business email listed on the channel that I sometimes remember to check.
DeviantArt - OfficialSassy DA is kinda dead, but I still like the sorting features and the ability to upload full resolution images, so this is where all my artwork and photography is.
Twitter - ClassySassy143 Let's be real it's not long for the world and I've backed off from posting there, however there are some things only Twitter (I refuse to call it X) has, so I mostly use the account for Splatoon map rotation updates and Pokemon Go news. I still Tweet, just not often.
My Discord is for personal use, so I don't give it out unless it's to a friend or I need instant messaging for a collab. Believe me, it's for the best because despite how I may seem, I am not a talkative person and even though I'm only in a handful of servers, I only send like 8 messages a year in 'em.
I put in for a Bluesky code and am looking into cohost for future alternatives, but I haven't done anything yet. By the time I make up my mind someone will probably have claimed my user on there and I'll have to make up another name again lol
Why not just make the accounts now?
Because I don't want to have a bunch of social media to keep up with and suck my time. The few I have already do enough and are a primary reason I don't use them on my phone. Not to mention, these sites are "hot" right now because of the massive amount of people jumping ship off Twitter, who knows if they'll have any longevity. I've been around and seen enough "YouTube alternatives we should all move to" to know many sites just don't last past the initial hype.
Now I'm not leaving Tumblr. There's so much here and like DA, I love the archive system not to mention how tagging lets you organize and easily find posts later. I don't believe Tumblr is going anywhere anytime soon. Stagnation happens and sites like MySpace still exist. Heck, while I've basically abandoned it, Quotev still exists and has some active users.
But that's the kicker: active users. If Tumblr becomes such a ghost town that I'm basically the only person populating my dash, that'll probably be the time I officially move on. But until that happens...

Art Week Hangover! Here's Maggie!
Tumblr media
Finishing my art week a little late, 'cos I ran into a brick wall emotionally LAST week. These are illustrations for my longrunning story, if anyone cares - it's free, and everything's Creative Commons BY-NC-SA - and I'll give you some more art and description under the cut.
It's only a 7 pointed star because I needed something glowy-shaped I could fit a soda bottle inside. Maggie has drawn a lion because that's in the Rider-Waite version of Strength. And all the chalk art is on the ground now because it read better that way in this style.
Here's the old version with the shading:
Tumblr media
Sometimes I regret not just cutting her title down to "The Apprentice" but that's a shitty reality series I don't care to be associated with, even accidentally. It's a lot of letters to fit into an image, though.
This are liable to get out of hand with Maggie along, just like that mouse with the brooms, but not because she doesn't know what she's doing. She knows exactly what she's doing, she just doesn't know when to STOP.
The fleur de lis is in all of Maggie's family's cards, signifying loyalty. They are definitely loyal to each other, and more-or-less to their homeland - albeit in different ways. Maggie's mom has a crown appearing near her head, while Maggie has drawn one at her feet, and she could easily scuff it out if she wants. She and her mom both know how to turn into birds - not necessarily like the city birds in the air behind her, but Maggie is definitely an urban phenomenon. Changing your whole body like that eats up pieces of it, so, at her age, Maggie can only store enough body mass to do maybe one or two changes a week. If she's going to cause mischief, there are less expensive ways.
It's way harder to get a smug smile across in only two contrasting colours! I think I managed, but, again, this might change before I put it up on my site. I've almost got Milo's card finished too, so I'll either be back with that later tonight or tomorrow. Once I have the first few illustrations front-loaded, I'll check out Tapas as a host for Tin Soldier. If I can reformat it well enough there, I'll post the whole thing in order... Possibly with the swearing bowdlerized, we'll see how that works.
My next eye doctor followup is on June 17th. I'm not doing badly with most of the exercises, but my eyes are still messing with me at the moment. Maybe I pushed too hard last week, but I think middle age is making close work harder with no correction. (I fear how bad my most recent art will look once I get some!) I'm going to have to see what's the best option to treat presbyopia which a binocular vision dysfunction. I got more dumb doctor stuff this week too, but not until Wednesday - so I'm still gonna be all distracted.
I have almost got my Canadian finances straightened out! I have access to money, now I just need access to credit. Hopefully, they'll approve me for a card of some kind next week, then I can get into debt and prove I can pay it off.
Okay, thanks for your patience with the combination art/update thing, and here's Maggie's original crappy artwork.

The True Black Tarot - A Review
So I had never actually heard of the True Black Tarot until recently when I was turned onto it by one of my online friends. Once I went to the site and found it, I fell in love. The cards were stunning and the website had an air of mystery involving it. I ordered the cards and have had them for a few weeks, and as such decided I would do a review on this stunning, and exclusive, deck.
Tumblr media
The Customer Experience
This deck is quite a rare one to be able to get. Upon going online to the website, you can instantly see that the deck itself is sold out. While that gave me a bit of pause, I did click on the “More information” section and it did explain that this author hand pants portions of the deck, as such they only put for sale a few each week and reload the cart on Sundays at 12:00am easter standard time.
So that being said, I set a helpful reminder for myself the next week. When my reminder went off I politely told my husband I had to use the restroom, paused the show we were watching, grabbed my phone, and booked it to the bathroom. Midnight came and went on the eastern seaboard and the online shop did not originally have them. After much refreshing and an anxious 10 minutes (followed by “are you okay in there?!”) the shop had them in stock. At close to $100 this would be the most expensive deck I have ever purchased, yet something about the exclusivity made me press the “Add to cart” followed by the “Here is my last hard earned dollar/checkout” buttons. I am glad I did it then as an hour later, checking just out of curiosity, it was sold out for the week.
A few days later it was in the mail and within 14 days of purchase, the item was in my hands.
Tumblr media
The Deck Itself
The deck arrived in your standard brown box. Upon opening I found another black box, buried under black strings/pieces of paper that got everywhere (I decided then that I had discovered a theme). Inside the black box were the cards themselves and a tiny booklet that went over the basics of the cards. The black box is meant to be a storage box and neatly holds the cards and the booklet.
The cards themselves are stunning. Each card has it’s own beautifully designed photo on it and the cards are made of a very strong card stock. They are super thick (almost double the size of a standard tarot deck) and seem to be able to handle almost anything. I was a bit sad to discover that the cards themselves are not hand painted (that I can tell), only the edging is, however I am willing to overlook that. You can tell by holding them that a lot of thought and detail went into the meaning of each card. This is a stunning deck, however it can be a bit difficult to make out the words on the cards in certain light (i.e., name of the card). This is due to a beautiful laser etching done on the backs of all the cards, and the artwork for the Major Arcana, as well as the titles and names of each card.
Tumblr media
Pros
♦️Beautiful artwork
♦️Personally felt an instant connection with them
♦️Feels as if it is much more expensive than it really is
♦️Sturdy and strong cards, designed to never fold or get damaged
♦️Beautiful black theme
Tumblr media
Cons
♦️Due to the thickness of the cards, deck is really thick, possibly difficult to shuffle for those with smaller hands
♦️Due to the hand painting, did come with a weird paint smell that has slowly dissipated but is not entirely gone (yet)
♦️The difficulty in purchasing
Tumblr media
Final Thoughts
This is a stunning deck that truly looks as if it will stand the test of time and would be perfect for any collector. While beautiful, due to the minimalistic design I would say this might not be the best deck to learn off of or for beginners as it really takes a strong grasp of intuition to read. Overall this is a deck that I look forward to having for decades to come.

I've surrendered myself and made a nsfw account when I truly don't think that what I do is nsfw, nor is my intention for it to be, but at least I can spam wips in somewhere safe from annoying brats.
That being said, I've been thinking about this sanitization of content on the web. I saw a thread of an artist that put me on perspective about how there is no safe spaces for children nowadays (back in the day we had gaming content in cartoon channels sites or sites that were designed for children, like neopets and such) and I totally agree with them, I've never thought about the issue by those lenses.
However, in the same thread they said another thing that I agree, that is on how the public expect that small artists be tidy and mistake free while big companies that actually mold the culture around us get a free pass. She used the example of nsfw artwork where the artist decides to not draw a condom and people would harass them for it using the argument that the artist might be against safe sex (yeah, this actually happens a lot...). This discourages artists who are starting their careers and makes them sometimes just straight up give up.
From my experience, I had people come up to me and say that I should censor my artwork because children might see it and since then I could not find peace. And it was not about a purposefully spicy artwork either, it was just cleavage. But that begs the question: is this really my fault? I mean, twitter has not a good censorship and moderation. Why am I at fault when I'm just trying to show my art out to the world while twitter gets a free pass?
I've put up a 🔞 warning on my bio on Twitter and still I had to make a purge of followers who were minors so I could have a small ounce of peace. And now I had to add another layer making ANOTHER account so that me, an artist, could be able to talk about art without being bothered.
There is also something about Brazilian art community that make them something we call "sem noção". Weird, but purposefully weird. They act like they're your best friend and crosses boundaries just because they are also an artist, and I get very uncomfortable with this, specially when I have these minors come up to my artwork and say they're horny for my characters? First of all, ew. Second of all, what makes you think that is an appropriate thing to say? Third: how is this my fault? They would come up to ME but it's my fault? Come the fuck on.
I hate how I have to be a moderator for my own community. This is another thing that discourages me to build one in the first place. I actually like the idea of the new account since it will make me easier to catalogue my wips for the Patreon wip post and because I'm really talkative while I'm working and I don't want to bother anyone, but the fact that I had to make it in the first place is just annoying to me.
Like, I just want to make art. I don't want to have to open up my following list and make a full recognizing mission on every single person who follows me. There is also the issue where artists might follow you and unfollow you when you don't follow back and then trash you behind your back calling you arrogant. That also happens a lot, yes yes.
I'm tired. I know I say this a lot, but I am. There is no other adjective for what I feel.
I'm trying to focus more on what made me start doing art in the first place which would be seeing my characters interacting with each other.

Podcasting in 2023: What You Need + 9 Steps To Get Started
Part 1 l Part 2 l Part 3 l Part 4 l Part 5 l Part 6 l Part 7 l Part 8 l Part 9 l
The tenth article Sydney gave me is one with a broader scope. It covers not only how to start a podcast, but what one really is. Since you're here, I'll skip over that part. If you want to start one, you already know what one is.
The article covers basic things to get started- a microphone, a room to record in, editing software, headphones, and a hosting site.
Then it's time to cover how to start a podcast.
Pick a theme you're compelled by
Ideally, you'll have an audience or at least a potential one in mind. This article goes into more depth. It's geared towards brand and company podcasts, but it does talk in depth about the importance of niches.
The article urges you to take into account a few factors:
Has another podcast covered this podcast, and if so how can I make mine unique?
Is the topic still relatable?
Will the topic have an audience?
Is there enough meat on the bone for a season?
Now, I'll throw my two cents in here- no idea is original anymore, they've all been done before. You can bring the best uniqueness to your podcast by using your best asset- you. Be yourself, and your podcast will automatically be different. And as far as 'still' relatable, there are nerds out there that are super into neolithic stone tools, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. In my life experience, as long as you're passionate about the subject, people are attracted to that passion and are willing to hear you out. As far as the audience question, the same answer applies- if even one person likes it (that person is you, by the way), then others are no doubt into it. The last question is certainly more important- you want something substantial to talk about, so don't niche down so much you can only think of two episodes.
There's a video linked under this step, which provides more information on the article as a whole.
2. Decide on show format
There are a lot of formats out there, and each one of them is suited to that podcast for a different reason. So choose one that speaks to you and think about how your ideas can fit under that umbrella.
3. Use your existing network
Use your social media, talk to your friends and family. Also, try to reach out to communities that talk regularly about your topic- this article recommends facebook groups, but I'd bet reddit is also a good choice (I don't personally use reddit, so I can't say for sure).
4. Record and edit
Don't panic at this stage. Think of it as a trial run to get the kinks out. Just make sure you hit record- you can't edit what you didn't capture. You'll find ways to streamline as you go along.
5. Finalize name and artwork
This article recommends waiting until this point to cement your ideas, because as you worked on planning you might have pivoted slightly away from your original idea. Plus, once you have that first episode you might find inspiration in it.
6. Make a website
Consider this your podcast's home base. Anything related to it- transcripts, show notes, etc.- will have a central place to live.
7. Promote
The only thing I could think of when I was reading this section was 'If you build it, they will come.' But this isn't the Field of Dreams. You'll have to work to get ears on your podcast. Put it out there so people know it exists- it may be just what they're looking for. This article goes more in-depth on growing a podcast.
8. Track your metrics
Once your podcast is running, keep track of it. Note what works promotion-wise, and also see where your numbers are. As a side note from me- don't obsess over this. You might see 'only' twenty people, but those are twenty individuals who took time out of their day to listen to you.
9. Monetize
The article mentions that sponsorship, affiliates, and membership services are all ways to make money from your podcast. As an aside from me, I would caution you about doing this too soon- no one likes having brands shoved in their face, and most likely you won't get brands to partner with you when you're just starting out.

100 Business Ideas you can Start Today - Entrepreneur Handbook
Starting a business is hard, it’s a long exhausting slog, and statistically, you’re destined to fail. But getting a enterprise off the ground is barely an issue you’ll face if you may give you a business thought, to start with. I ran my own company for about two years, but it surely took us three weeks and a variety of ‘meetings’ at pubs to eventually come up with one thing we wished to do. To make issues just a little simpler to get going, for every entry I’ve covered the business idea/mannequin, what you’ll need to begin and where it is best to focus to market/develop your new enterprise. Blogging is one in every of the primary enterprise models to arise from the invention of the web. Blogs are on-line magazines in a distinct segment that folks learn for recommendation, data and resources. Examples of standard blogs embody Techcrunch which began as a hobby and turned right into a business that was acquired for around $25m; Buzzfeed for trending millennial information/topics and Entrepreneur Handbook for advice on starting, managing and running a enterprise within the UK (we couldn’t resist). You’d be surprised what they’re worth and should consider selling them. A whole lot of persons are available in the market to buy outdated phones either to use for elements or to add to their vintage phone collection. Do GCR4D decluttering, gather the previous telephones, and sell them on eBay. Depending on what models you've got, they might have a good resale worth. Do some research, however your telephones may very well be worth anyplace from $30 to $100 a bit. Perhaps much more. And when you have a couple of mendacity around, that’s an extra couple hundred bucks. Domain flipping is similar to home flipping, nevertheless it focuses on buying and promoting domains on-line - not homes in a neighborhood. The fundamental premise is that you buy a site that you just think shall be worthwhile for low cost. And then you definately turn round and promote them for a much more vital worth. It takes a tiny bit of money upfront and some probability. Do you may have any artsy hobbies you take pleasure in? Effectively, it's best to use these hobbies to earn a living too! Some people carve wooden, make jewellery, sew quilts, make playing cards, and people are all implausible online money-making ideas. You can begin any sort of Etsy store and submit your creations- Etsy has hundreds of thousands of customers around the world looking for handmade works of artwork. In case you have a look at the perfect sellers on Etsy, you might have limitless choices of concepts and are solely limited by your personal time and craft price range. I am such a sofa potato, so finding out I may get paid to observe videos was life-altering. This isn’t a get-wealthy-fast thought, however you should utilize your free time to make just a few bucks one video at a time. If you’re already watching Facebook or TikTok videos in your downtime, why not get some free cash out of it? I put the videos on within the background while I’m cooking, understanding, or simply taking a break from work. Those with a Pinterest business account can run adverts on Pinterest to attain different targets, together with driving site visitors to a blog, website or storefront, creating brand awareness, encouraging e-newsletter sign-ups and more. Adverts can make it easier to generate revenue both directly by sending potential clients to product pages or not directly by generating site visitors to blog posts or newsletters which might be monetized in other methods. Those that sell merchandise can easily get products in front of potential new customers on Pinterest using Product Pins. Product Pins have a particular format and are enriched with metadata that let Pinterest users know the pins are shoppable. These pins include costs, product availability, a product description and hyperlink again to a particular product web page through which a person can place an order. Extra From your Money: Select a excessive-interest saving, checking, CD, or investing account from our checklist of top banks to start saving right now.

(have a graphic here that says welcome)
hey.
I'm Mantis Friend
I consider this an 18+ blog not because I frequently post 18+ content but because I am an adult, and may occasionally delve into adult subjects, so please be aware of that. (also I might swear, so there's that too)
Tumblr media
(full resolution cat pic at the bottom)
Number one Mr. Cupcake fan
I'm mainly an artist and musician but I also do a lot of other things, including shitpost, if you just wanna see my art, I've tagged it all as "#my art" if you wanna see my music I've tagged it as "#my music" ... if you only wanna see the nonsense I've tagged all of it as "#shitpost" any thing I reblog is now tagged "#re🅱️log" so you can mute that tag if you only wanna see my wholly original unhinged rambling and art. "🅰️sks" is the tag for asks.
Reblogs, replies, and follows are NOT a endorsement. Simply put I cannot do a full background check on every person I interact with on this site, obviously if I catch someone I'm following doing something awful I'll unfollow them then, but there is simply no time efficient way for me to do that with every person I ever interact with ever.
(more info below the cut)
Tumblr media Tumblr media

some more info about me for the nosy:
he/him
I'm a big fan of:
Five Nights at Freddy's , Ace Attorney , Undertale/Deltarune , JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, The Persona Series and Doki Doki Literature Club!
I consider myself a collector, I mostly collect Retro games and pins, but also anything that catches my eye, I have almost the entirety of Star Trek on VHS, I've not watched a full episode yet.
UPCOMING (?) PROJECTS:
Webcomic:
I have been working on this webcomic for quite awhile now, which is unfortunate because I started it with the intention of it not becoming one of my huge projects that never come out.
That being said this will be the first wholly original project I will make.
The comic is inspired by Shonen manga, specifically Jojo's, if that sounds like something you might enjoy, stay posted! I don't have a venue for the comic at the moment but I think I may host it here on Tumblr!
Role Playing Game:
Dont expect this one any time soon, I want to make sure I am at least somewhat competent in Game Maker Studio before I work on this idea I've had for years.
As this project is so on the back burners because of the skill needed for me to actually start work on it, I can't say with certainty what the game will be like when I finally start development, right now it is a scattered series of artworks, documents, and soundtracks, but this is what im building towards.
I will say that this game as I Invision it currently, is inspired by the Persona series, with elements of Ace Attorney's investigation and Cross Examination sequences. The only other thing I will say about this game is that I intend to have a mechanic to replace the "level up to get stronger" mechanic that most traditional RPGs have.
Finished Projects:
VIDEO A DAY PROJECT:
Back in 2021 I decided I wanted to upload a video to my YouTube Channel every day that year, and that I did.
Mostly songs you'll notice that the quality of the videos takes a serious nose dive during most of the year, they aren't all great but there are some good things in there.
I have a playlist of all the videos here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUv6pXjkdl6Bgq5Nim0AJuYzxNImg-Ga_
I do not recommend you watch them all, please don't, but it might be fun to scroll through the playlist and click on ones that catch your eye.
if you don't wanna do that then you at least watch the first video Black on White https://youtu.be/iI9HQg9lyjA and the Last https://youtu.be/qjdoybrOduQ which is a remix of the song using the experience I gained through the year. and who knows maybe there is some secret hidden in the end screen if that last video ;)
you can find me in other places here:
My website is janky but (hopefully) the best place to link you to anything you might desire (if your desire is more stuff by me)
YouTube is where I post my music and other video things: https://youtube.com/channel/UCKDmQwajLVwu_FKKlPqebUA
I sometimes post to Instagram but the way it works kind of annoys me so you might not find all my art there, but you will find some game boy photos!
I have a Gamejolt account but I kinda forget about it
on discord I am "mantisfriend" DMs are open, for now, feel free to DM me!
I have a Twitter but I find myself using it less and less as the CEO makes a fool of himself and guts the platform
I have a Reddit account but I am not really using it anymore as the CEO makes a fool of himself and guts the platform
I got a Newgrounds account have no idea how this site works!
If you want to Email me feel free to email [email protected]
and of course feel free to message me here as well, I'm probably most active here now that reddit has become worthless.
PROJECTS I'M APART OF:
currently I am a composer for the FNAF fan game Fazbear Rebrand
(sometimes this link breaks for no reason, but if you search Fazbear Rebrand on gamejolt it should come up)
Thats the only one for the time being, but I'll make sure to keep this post relatively up to date

"I Am YEG Arts" Series: Yang Lim
Tumblr media
Promotional image for Shifting Articulations of Asian-ness in Contemporary Canada, curated by Yang Lim. Photo provided by the artist.
As an independent curator, Yang Lim encourages audiences to step outside their usual frames of reference and see things a little bit differently. Through exhibitions that explore themes of heritage, memory, language, agency, and the contemporary Asian experience, Yang hopes to be a catalyst for conversation, while challenging the homogenization of diverse experiences.  As digital platforms continue to gain popularity, Yang continues to push curatorial boundaries and explore new ways to bring the traditional gallery experience to online audiences around the world. This week’s "I Am YEG Arts” story focuses on Yang Lim.
Tell us about your connection to Edmonton and what keeps you living and working here.
Initially I moved here for educational reasons, but I also have family here, so that’s a big reason for me to stay in Edmonton. But also, after I came here, I volunteered with various artistic cultural organisations around town over the years and I liked the vibe of the city as well. I think that’s certainly a contributing factor for me staying here.
I know that Edmonton has been called "Festival City”. That’s the thing that struck me about Edmonton – there are all these festivals and things happening, literally back-to-back during certain times of the year too.  That’s certainly an attractive aspect about Edmonton. And of course, in the winter months there are still things happening that cater to every taste.
You recently wrapped the online exhibit: Shifting Articulations of Asian-ness in Contemporary Canada. Tell us more about the experience of curating such a large online exhibition.
This was an interesting challenge in part because, up until that point, most of what I had been doing in terms of curating were conventional on-site, in-person exhibitions. There was a learning curve when I went through this project, but it’s been a good learning experience as there are several behind-the-scenes components that I didn’t necessarily think about before for the online platform. For example, you aren’t dealing with things such as a physical space – in an in-person exhibition, you have your square footage of how much space you have and you also have to navigate that space in terms of putting up the artwork, deciding how it’s going to be displayed, and so on. You don’t have that necessarily for an online exhibition. But at the same time, you’re still dealing with the spatial issue in a sense, except that it’s in the context of a website. So, there are similar concerns, but manifested in a different form. I would ask questions such as: What’s the aesthetic? What impression do I want to give people when they first come to the website? What might attract them to stick around and explore?
The other interesting thing I had to deal with was the different mediums from the participating artists, so I had to consider how to best represent them on my exhibit website. It was an ongoing collaboration that involved getting input from the artists about what they wanted to see and how they preferred their work to be shown, while working with the constraints of an online medium. There was ongoing communication between me and the artists, and also the website designer I was working with, so after much back and forth throughout the whole process it worked out well. I think, overall, the artists were quite pleased with what came out of it.
I also wanted to ensure people could access the website and navigate around easily, regardless of how they viewed it. In a conventional, physical exhibition you just go to the space, but in an online platform someone might look at it on their laptop, phone, desktop computer, or tablet, so I didn’t want to inadvertently exclude anyone from accessing it. That aspect was taken care of quite well through the website design process as the exhibition website was viewable in all sorts of devices, which was good to see.
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Were there any surprise learnings, challenges, or opportunities in curating an online exhibition?
Throughout this process of building this exhibition, I was thinking about what I could do in an online platform that is not possible in an onsite exhibition. For example, one of the artists displayed some illustrations, and we added browsing functionality so that you could click and zoom in to the image. Another artist had a video that was embedded, so you could then click it and show it full screen. These are the sorts of things that were part of my thinking process around how I could take advantage of in this online medium, which also allows people to customise their viewing experience.
At the same time, there are downsides to any platform. One of the things with the online platform is that, admittedly, you don’t have the in-person interaction that you may have, say when you go in a gallery space and have that spontaneous conversation with other people.  As a result, the online context does have its pros and cons that arise from using it to exhibit art.
What was it about these artists’ works that led you to select this group of artists for the exhibition?
These artists’ works had intriguing points of connection, so I thought that it would be worthwhile to exhibit them together because they all deal with ideas pertaining to heritage, memory, language, and agency. They were exploring these concepts in ways that connected with their gender identities as well, either directly or indirectly. For example, one artist’s video in the exhibition deals with domestic labour and matrilineal inheritance. Another artist explores their racialized queer identity by revisiting memorable places in their hometown. And a few other works in this exhibit dealt with articulation and language. When you think about language—the mother tongue, native tongue—there’s that connotation of passing on one’s language through the generations.
I thought that it was important to draw attention to their work in a cohesive way because there are more and more artists from diverse backgrounds who are producing very interesting work across Canada. There’s still more that can be done to make their work more visible, including those produced by artists of Asian backgrounds.
What does community mean to you, and where do you find it?
At a basic level, I think of community in terms of where I am geographically located, which is in Edmonton. But I would include, in that idea of “community,” people who are supportive of what I do but who might not live here, such as those people whom I’ve established networks and connections with. In a sense I'm seeing community as something that is virtual or hybrid. It’s about having that space where I can feel my work is appreciated or making an impact in some way or contributing to the artistic discourse.
Community, for me, is also about the potential audience that I may have for my work.  It's both sides – the community as a people who are supportive, giving that context to produce, but also the flip side, those who are receiving what you’re producing, and engaging them in the conversation. I think there are different levels of understanding around what community is. It can range from the micro-specific context to something broader as well.

Yang Lim's new online exhibition Cinematic Disruptions: Asian Diasporic Communities in Motion opens this week, running from January 26 to March 11. Photo provided by the artist.
Tell us a little about what you’re currently working on or hoping to explore next.
Currently, I’m working on Cinematic Disruptions: Asian Diasporic Communities in Motion, which is also an online exhibition but focuses specifically on film and video. It's in the same vein as my previous exhibitions as it’ll highlight the experiences and perspectives of Asian communities. Thinking historically about how Asian communities have been represented in film and television, it has certainly improved over the years. You see shows like Kim’s Convenience, Fresh Off the Boat, Crazy Rich Asians, to name a few. We’re seeing more representations of people from these communities, which is good to see, but I always look in terms of what more could be done? In some ways, it’s still lacking. An example of this would be fantasy and science fiction. How are Asian people represented there?
This exhibition draws together some people whose work is representing these experiences and perspectives in thought-provoking ways. Hopefully, they will entice people to think, get them to step outside what they are accustomed to viewing, and maybe intrigue them to explore some more. In fact, one of the works I’ve included in the exhibition is a science fiction short film. There’s also another one that could be considered a surreal film representing the immigrant experience, but it’s done in a very unusual way. It defies categorization in some ways, and I think that’s a good thing as it’s testing the boundaries of how we think Asian communities are depicted.
I’d be curious to know about peoples’ thoughts on these films. What drew me to them was that they’re different from what I’ve seen before. They are working within recognizable genres and styles – there's science fiction, drama, more reflective pieces, and documentaries. My approach in this exhibition is similar to what I’ve done before, where I’m drawing together different genres, because I think there are interesting connections you can make when you group works together rather than if you’re viewing them separately.
What excites you most about the YEG arts scene right now?
There are increasingly interesting artistic interventions and other creative things happening in Edmonton. I think part of this is that bigger cities may have an oversaturation of organizations and groups, while Edmonton doesn’t seem to have that same oversaturation. Because of this, I think that this opens the door for interesting creative practices and interventions, which you might not necessarily get if you’re living in a place that is overly centralized or dominated by certain institutions. It’s nice to see creative manifestations happening in places you might not have seen a decade or two ago. The city’s pop-up events and activities add to its creative flavour as well.
Looking towards the future, the pandemic has affected everyone’s lives in a lot of ways, but one positive development is that you see businesses, the arts, and other sectors that are taking advantage of the online platform to connect and produce content. I’m interested to see where that goes in terms of what potential exists for the arts to leverage online platforms. We would still have our in-person events, exhibits, and activities of course—we still want those to continue! -- but we can also incorporate that online dimension to bring in traditional audiences that are interested in creative output in Edmonton, and also attract new audiences. Someone may not necessarily think of visiting an art gallery, but perhaps they might see something online, either deliberately or accidentally. Sometimes accidents are a good thing. I think there’s interesting potential there to attract people to the arts that can feed into increased audiences to physical locations too. Hopefully, what I’m doing in terms of these online exhibits are feeding into that and getting people to think about new, interesting ways that can supplement what we do already with in-person activities, talks, and exhibits to build our audiences.

Yang’s recent exhibition Shifting Articulations of Asian-ness in Contemporary Canada broadened the conversation around “Asian-ness” and highlighted diverse perspectives within Canada’s Asian communities. His next exhibition, Cinematic Disruptions - Asian Diasporic Communities in Motion, broadens the conversation around “Asian-ness” and complicates what it means to be part of the Asian diaspora. It features eleven creators of Asian heritage who work with the film and video mediums. Their works convey diverse and complex representations of Asian diasporic communities’ experiences that complicate existing representations in mainstream and popular culture. The exhibition runs January 26 to March 11.
