#They're not human but they're not obviously animals like Mink

I just went back and read your original Louis head canons, so I have to ask: do you have any new ones? They're all so good, I could listen to you talk about him for ages !
Nasty baby boy!! Thank you for asking, I need to gnaw on him like a chew toy rn because of my IWTV reread. It's giving me even more Louis brain worms than usual. Little guy....
He is not an animal person in general, but he has a very special and very strong affinity for birds. He has bird feeders at all the windows in his favorite spots, and an assortment of little bird friends (he's had lots of different kinds) in a big aviary who are very spoiled and very well trained. He's also a big fan of the birdtok scroll hole and fighting about birdkeeping on reddit until someone is crying
Louis knows his original family name from France, but never uses or speaks about it. If anyone were to ask, he'd say he doesn't care for it because he wants """his""" achievements to speak for themselves, but in reality it kind of bothers him that his ancestry is "common" and nouveau riche
Lestat's dumbest nickname for him is Minky (because Louis' hair reminds him of those fancy mahogany mink coats, all dark, shiny and fluffywavy). He perhaps maybe possibly finds all the stupid pet names a little bit sweet
Phone game junkie. If brass buttons were that interesting to him, imagine candy crush or the businessman enrichment he would get from animal crossing. Lestat has to limit his screen time so he doesn't rot his brain
He watches Protestant televangelists and bitches at the screen like a dad watching football. Just in general he likes to look at things that make him angry and then complain about it (big fan of Facebook and the news for the same reason)
Really into modern self-help and wellness culture. He konmaris his house every two months and is a top user of the headspace app. It's really annoying for everyone else but it does seem to be working
He uses his vampire prodigy skills to do a lot of sketching outside, especially when the weather is nice. He's always been a nature enjoyer but now he can capture it easily and keep it close. He likes to take pictures too. And show them to other people whether they care or not. The oak tree in his favorite park is like a grandchild to him
Because of his poor feeding habits very early on after being turned, his fangs are just slightly smaller and duller than the average vampire. It makes his kills messier/harder to keep tidy because there's a bit of sawing and ripping involved in the feeding process instead of a clean bite
Contrary to popular belief, he does enjoy physical affection from very close people, like his siblings when he was human and Lestat now. He needs more space than his stage five clinger husband (they would be surgically attached if Lestat had his way), but he likes having someone to lean against while he reads or a lap to sit in during a movie or cuddles after a long day. It just took an acclimation period and some trust building/bonding to get there
His hatred of granulated sugar was partly financially motivated (business competition) but also because he had a massive sweet tooth as a human but it didn't fit his image. Almond mom who sneaks twinkies in the bathroom
On a somewhat related note, his disordered eating wasn't a totally new thing as a vampire. His image of himself was always very reliant on his ability to be "godly" and In Control which led to a lot of extreme monk food habits and secret binging on fat, sugar, and alcohol. It's also why he spiraled so quickly into being an actual alcoholic so quickly after Paul's death
Against all odds, he is a fancy bath guy. Hot water was obviously not super easy to get and regulate for most of his life so it wasn't really a feasible option, but now he's extremely into the idea of being up to his neck in hot water that smells like lavender. He's kind of embarrassed about it though so he takes them when he's alone like it's some kind of petty crime. Lestat knows and leaves him little bath product gifts (and eventually gets to be in included in the baths sometimes)

Scurrying Seafarers
Trigger warning: Rodents, Medical experiments/surgeries/dissections mentioned
Content: Slice of Life, Fluff, Rats Summary: A dissection gone "wrong" leads to rats on the Polar Tang. It's wholesome I swear
Usually, Law had no issues with experimenting on things. As a matter of fact, even at a young age, it wasn't unusual for him to dissect frogs he'd catch, following along as his father explained what each organs were and what they did. Usually though, when he bought rats, it was some that already were dead from some illness or the other they'd picked up along the grand line, giving him good hindsight on what said diseases did and how to counter them as he dissected them.
Today was an unusual day for the surgeon of death. These rats he'd bought were very much alive. When he'd heard about sick rats and bought them, he had expected them to be dead already, not caught in little traps. Apparently the people who trapped them felt bad for the rats, and he hadn't corrected them when they assumed he was a vet.
Most of the time he didn't think twice about doing these things; they were merely rats... But they looked at him. With their little eyes. Like they begged him to help them. Small creatures with round eyes and pretty soft fur... They were insanely cute, and unknowingly had found one of Law's weaknesses. So here he was, sitting at his desk, with a bunch of rats in their small trap cages, all of them with similar symptoms; lethargy, odd clicking noises, labored breath, and some of them had red liquid coming out of their noses. All things he'd find very worrying in humans, but his rational mind reminded him these were, in fact, animals, and perhaps some of it was just... Normal rat things. He sighed, annoyed at himself, before stalking out of his office, his crew members avoiding him as he was frowning in a way that told them it was perhaps for the best to leave him alone.
A trip in town later, and Law had his arms full of books on... Pet rats. And caring for them. Everything from their diet to various veterinary books and one that simply explained how to train them. Not that Law intended on keeping them, of course, no, this was just to make their stay decent until he adopted them out, obviously.
He did feel slightly ridiculous putting the small creature down on the way too large operating table though. He sighed before looking at his veterinary book, opened on a page about respiratory infections in rats. The dosages were ridiculously low, making it harder to administer as he didn't want the poor rodents to overdose on their medecine. He startled a little as a voice rang out in the operation room.
"Captain? Is someone injured?"
Bepo was concerned as he poked a head inside, before staring at the sight. This definitely was not what he expected.
"... Are you operating on a rat?"
Law turned around, feeling just a little silly over everything, not sure of why he actually was so concerned for critters like this. It was unlike him, really. Bepo didn't seem to mind though as he stepped closer, smiling happily.
"They're cute!"
Law merely hummed to show he was listening, focusing back on handing out medecine to his bunch of rodents, allowing his friend to stay and watch if he wanted.
"Captain... Can I adopt one?"
Law then paused to look up at Bepo. What was he on about now? The mink was looking adoringly at the creatures, ever so gently patting their back with his huge paw.
"I intended on giving them away in the next port."
Rats on a ship were always bad news... But these ones were fairly friendly, and perhaps it would be good to keep his crew occupied in the long hours they spend travelling underwater. Bepo's puppy eyes were making him waver in his decision.
"...Sure."
The polar bear cheered, albeit quietly to not startle them. Law sighed again and pointed at a grey rat.
"You can have this one. The book said this coat color was called Mink, it seemed fitting."
Once Bepo had picked up his rat, ever so carefully, and ran off to tell the others, Law knew he was in it now.
Over the course of the next few hours, his entire crew seemed to have come up to him to ask for their own pet rat, all of them claiming it was unfair if only Bepo got himself a companion. Ikkaku had come in first, picking an elegant beige colored rat with lovely brown markings on its nose, claiming it would compliment the boilersuit everyone on board wore before scratching its chin and running off. Not far behind were Shachi and Penguin; Penguin picking a white and black rat that had markings somewhat similar to a penguin, saying he'd fit right in given his own name. Shachi had picked one of the albino rats, claiming the red eyes made it look very cool.
Soon, almost everyone on board had come by to pick their own rats, most of them leaving the critters with Law for now since they were going under treatment. Not long after, the crew had organised itself to send a group to buy better cages, litter, food and even toys for their rats. The heart pirates were dead set on not only being good owners, but actually find ways to spoil their new companions.
Law had looked down at the little black rat left, before once more acting rather bothered, huffing as he carefully reached out and gave it an experimental scratch with his finger. Since it seemed to please the creature, he smiled a little to himself.
-----
Later on that evening, a small argument broke out in the common room, right after dinner. Surprisingly, the dishes were particularly clean before reaching the sink- it seemed the new tiny, furry crewmembers had already been given scraps.
"I'm telling you, Snowflake is a fearsome dude!"
"And I'm telling you my little Pingu actually has balls, so yours can't be a boy!"
"No, Pingu just has a big butt!"
Law wondered if perhaps he shouldn't slink back to his quarters, or sit in a corner and listen in without them noticing him given the very childish nature of what he was hearing. Sadly for him, his luck wasn't so good; Shachi and Penguin had turned to him, and Shachi was stalking up to the poor man, holding his rat up to him.
"Tell him Captain! Snowflake is a guy rat, right?"
Said captain took one look at the rat and shook his head. Turns out spending the rest of his afternoon reading all about rat care, medical or otherwise, came in handy very fast.
"...No, that is definitely a female."
Penguin laughed at that.
"Shachi finally gets a girl!"
What followed was a chase and more laughter as the two men messed around, though they remained very careful as they still carried their new pets. Bepo tried to step in, only to end up apologising when told off, walking back to his captain's side.
"...How did you name your rat, Captain?"
The bear perked up when he saw the little black furry ball resting in the feathers around his captain's neck, snuggling up on his shoulder.
"....Sora."
Admitting to it brought the tiniest blush to Law's face, as he knew all too well it was nerdy. Bepo beamed at him.
"...I called mine Captain Junior!"
----
(Author's note: I don't own rats but think they're neat little critter. IMO if any crew has matching pets, it's them. The rats' crew name is "the Lab Rats". Ikkaku's rat's name is "Wrenchy".)
I made some art to go with this too!

absolutely agree with you on hopper’s daemon being a st bernard, that’s so accurate. curious about steve’s parents animals and steve’s daemon’s name choice! also, I’m not that familiar with the daemon universe, but it is considered weird for your daemon to be the same gender as you? since you added that extra part to will’s bit.
- bug anon
Hi Bug! Lol yeah Hopper so obviously a huge rescue dog. Very cuddly. Much protect. Also, as is par the course for me things got long, so more under the cut!
I'll admit I didn't look into Steve's parent's animals as much as some of them, and they're more based on my head canons than any actual canon references, since there's only, like, 2 lines about Steve's parents. Minks are mostly known for being used to make expensive, high quality, fur coats, while minks themselves are very territorial weasels-sque creatures. I chose it because really liked the idea of his dad being something that's seen as a status symbol, but is actually kind of an asshole. Orchid Mantises (manti? mantiss?) imitate orchid flowers, and are beautiful, delicate looking creatures - they're also some of the most aggressive and precise hunters out there. I like to head canon Steve's mom as highly focused on appearances but also secretly fairly cunning. Also, I feel as if her being a highly predatory insect sort of highlights she's probably not the most attentive of mothers.
I'll admit Steve's daemon name actually came out be trying things and it just sort of feeling right? But I do really like it after researching more. According to Wikipedia, Rebecca can mean "Moderator", To Tie, Noose, To Bind, Captivating, Strong Combatant, Hearty - all things I think describe Steve really well. Captivating, Strong Combatant, and Hearty I think are fairly obvious in canon and people have already talked about the emotional gymnastics Steve tends to do to cater to groups for Moderator to fit, but I also think To Tie works as well. I haven't run the numbers, but I'd bet Steve's probably one of the people who talks to the most other characters in the show? He's definitely in the most groups, with a different collection of people he's partnered with each season, and I think makes him sort of good link between most of the different teams that form each season, tying them all together. Also, in His Dark Materials (the series daemons come from) daemon names can vary widely from common names, to objects, to fantasy-esque conglomerations of syllables. I think the Harringtons probably fall into the first category, where good, all American, "normal" names are what they go with. Also, Bex as a nickname just sounds really sporty and peppy to me and I love that for him haha.
Also, yeah in the series daemons are usually the opposite gender of their humans (I guess non-binary peoples' daemons are also non-binary but in a somehow opposite way???? Haha, yeah the early 2000s YA novels unsurprisingly don't consider that). Daemons that are the same gender happen, but are rare enough that they're considered an aberration. I think it's hinted at that same gender daemons are associated with homosexuality, but I at least like to believe that it's just something that happens sometimes and the association is more along the lines of when people assume a boy is gay because he likes art. Either way, I feel like Will having a male daemon would really highlight how he's considered such a "freak" and also be one of the reasons people called him the f-word in season 1 (which i know was period accurate, but still, ooofff)

So, after struggling, I have reminded myself that I actually suck at drawing faces that aren't human, so anyone that wants a picture of Bandit will have to just suck it or do something about it.
But while I'm at it, does anyone understand Minks? Like... How much of them is covered in fur? It's hard to tell cause of the style, but sometimes it seems like they have fur all over as standard, but others they're drawn just like humans with animal faces.
Tumblr media
And I thought I might have had an idea if I looked at their hands but... It's just another confusing layer.
Tumblr media
See, he has markings that look like paw pads but his hand is undeniably drawn like a human hand with claws. And there's no real distinction for where the actual palm/flesh is and where the fur ends if it ever started.
So this kind of implies that either the fur is all over just really fucking short (which would uh... Be very weird to have all over) or we're looking mostly at skin with fur the same color growing in certain places like the chin/tuft areas. It would at least explain why they're mostly really smooth looking. Idk if you know this, but short fur would be a lot like if you got a buzz cut unless it was really thick and plush, which is kinda like what seals have actually. But they're only smooth when wet.
Tumblr media
And wearing any clothes would be weird with this kind of fur all over because it would constantly be catching in and off of the layers you wear, especially skin tight. Shedding would also be a whole other issue in itself.
But if you look, they tend to have fur like marking around their face, which makes sense. Humans naturally have peach fuzz all over, especially on their face where hair would grow more on men. It is a little weird to think the 'skin' matches what we can tell is fur, assuming that is the case at all. This isn't even really touching how close to human they are aside from key animal features.
Oh! And considering their human characteristics, there really shouldn't be any hair or fur on their palms, or the bottom of their feet for that matter. Most animals have smooth scales/skin where they have contact with the ground the most. Or if they use their paws/hands those tend to lose hair too. Not %100 why, tbh, but it's probably because it would mess with grip strength. Hair and fur really mess with traction, especially when it's dirty or oily. Hard to run away or break open fruit if you can't hold on after all.
If I had to guess, it depends on the Mink how much of their body is covered in fur. Bepo is obviously mostly fur (he doesn't even have hair like most others do) while Carrot looks like a really pale human with a rabbit head.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But as a rule, they usually just have obvious fur around their face and other distinct animal features. The rest of the time they might as well just have human skin with unusual coloring. Which is still weird to consider but what can you do?
They're literally a race of Furries. Idk what I was expecting.

Does Shalria (or Shakira, according to my autocorrect), establish a hierarchy for other humans, and even other species, or does she lump everyone together, nobles and commoners and merfolk, beneath the Dragons?
Tumblr media
// Answered under the cut! (Also I had a good chuckle over your autocorrect, now I’m going to think of this song every time I have to spell her name)
Thank you very much for sending this in, Sparrow! You know, this is actually a really interesting question to think about since humans are generally thought of so lowly by most Celestial Dragons, that even one of their own referring to themselves as such is enough to absolutely infuriate them? There is so little regard for human life amongst their kind that whole countries can be taxed into poverty, allowing the population to suffer, starve and die just so long as the World Nobles can enjoy a little extra wealth. When it comes to Shalria and whether or not she has a hierachy for humans and other species, that would be a resounding yes! Pretty much everybody who doesn’t have celestial blood running through their veins is trash as far as she’s concerned, but humans are the most tolerated race with royalty coming first. They’re nowhere near as good as World Nobles but at least they try, and most seem to do a good job of running their silly little kingdoms and earning tribute for the World Government. Celestial Dragons were once mere royalty themselves before ascending to the Holy Land, so Shalria would at least deign to pretend to be polite if she ever happens to interact with one. When it comes to humans in general, she does tend to lump them all together. Nobles, commoners, peasants and pirates; they’re barely worth the filthy air they breathe and she could care less about any of them other than perhaps a few interesting or amusing individuals who might have gotten her attention. It’s the way she was brought up, with slavery being normalized and anybody unfortunate enough to become a slave is seen as less than human, more akin to some beast of burden or object to be used and discarded once they’re done. Overall she tends to think lowly of many humans regardless of skin colour or where they come from, paying more attention to things like wealth, mannerisms and status. The reason? She literally doesn’t consider herself to be human, actually believing herself to be a living god much like most other Celestial Dragons. Who cares where you come from or what you look like so long as you’re doing what you’re meant to? A good human is supposed to do as they’re told and that’s that. Underneath humans come other races. Longarms and Longlegs are human as far as she’s concerned, just uglier with freaky-looking arms and/or legs. Mink are considered to be animals but just as intelligent as humans, perhaps being respected a little more because they’re comfortably removed enough from humanity plus tend to be capable servants. They’re strong, fierce and can be wonderfully loyal much like her own father’s servant in Saladin who is a Rough Collie Dog Mink, having served the Rosward Family for nearly 40 years. Ranking below humans and the Mink Tribe are Fishfolk and Merfolk. To Shalria they are more disturbing being somewhere between human and animal, plus Fisher Tiger was responsible for the attack on the Holy Land of Mary Geoise when she was a young girl. She remembers that night all too well, how high the fires rose and threatened to overwhelm their household while countless slaves escaped into the night. It was close to the time her mother passed away and since then, Shalria tends to subconsciously associate their kind with negative experiences. Giants and Tontatta are considered interesting, with the former being thought of as exceptional servants due to their legendary size and strength while the little dwarfs are thought of as endearing but stupid due to being so easily ruled by the Ancient Donquixotes.

i browsed through the link you gave me about why you don't support animal rights... still don't see it though. yeah, peta fucking sucks, that's not news to anyone. peta is not for animal rights, they're for making money and an outlet for idiots. releasing thousands of minks from fur farms is idiotic and no real animal rights supporter would obviously do that. I'm for animal rights because I believe animals deserve a right to live, if they're healthy and not endangering anyone.
Let me see if I can explain myself clearer. You as an individual saying ‘I as an individual have the right to believe animals deserve proper care and treatment by humans’ is not the same as ‘animals have rights equal to that of humans and as such any usage of animals is considered slavery (even if the relationship between the human and animal is beneficial to one or both parties)’. That’s the distinction between animal welfare and animal rights.
The people who fall under the category of animal rights activists are the ones who will blindly support groups such as PETA that say they are for animal rights but are really just about spreading misinformation and making money. I for one would not want to be lumped in the same category of people who do more harm then good for animals, as well as harass individuals over a lack of understanding and a refusal of education. It’s not a matter of who’s a ‘real’ animal rights activist and who isn’t, the entire movement is tainted with people who use that term as an excuse to do horrible things to both humans and animals. It’s why the distinction exists. Animal welfare is for providing animals with proper care and respect with no radical implications. Animal rights comes with the assumption the individual is also for the radical ideologies that the majority of the group promotes, and that’s why I don’t support it. Your individual stance on animal rights doesn’t follow the majority of the animal rights group. For you as an individual that is a good thing, you recognize that the groups using the term are radical. So this is where my confusion comes in, why become so attached to the term, especially since the term and your personal actions (owning pelts) and viewpoints don’t match up with how animal rights is defined? It just doesn’t seem like the term animal rights properly expresses your personal views, but that’s just my opinion on the matter. I hope that makes more sense!
