Round L7, Poll #6
Remember, this is the losers bracket. The winner of this poll will advance to the 8th round, and the loser will be revealed and eliminated.
Character 162: Image a character who is powerful, intellegent, and feared by the most powerful entities of the world. They trade tales with each other of a powerful hunter that would wipe them from existance with a flick of his finger. Now imagine that he's a middle school teacher and his students think he's a cringefail manbaby. This character has some of the most OP powers of his series and uses them to give himself theatric lighting and cast shadows over his own face for dramatic effct. He wears sunglasses at night and footie pyjamas to important business meetings. He thinks he's so cool. And he is! But, quote, "his favorite meme is teamwork" and he's gay for a man who sleeps in rivers fully clothed. He's supposed to be a wise mentor figure but his students and subordinates do not respect him at all, even though they have enemies that are terrified of him. He's 26 years old and the story is supremely excellent at writing him as a young, unsure, not-very-good-at-adulting adult. I love this guy. He sucks. He's excellent. Please vote for this guy.
Character 292: hes the most unhinged 13 year old youll ever meet. hes shot a man before. a gambler who doesnt care if he lives or dies, which makes his various matches against the yakuza very stressful for them. at 19 he went up against a man who had been responsible for the murders of many via blood loss, and has the absolute audacity to raise the amount of his blood drained 10x just so he could drain the old man of all his wealth, which he later gambles away again after he wins. he died during the game but he got better. he got dementia in his 50s and arranged a fake funeral for himself, invited his friends to it to tell them he wasnt actually dead yet, and then died in front of all of the for real. in a tiger print button up and white suit. an irl funeral service is held for him yearly on the date of his death and he has a physical grave.

Jeeves and the Fox Hunt
Summary: Aunt Agatha attempts to hook Bertie up with one Bernice Prod, a young lady of her acquaintance who was introduced to her by her old friend Jonah Magnus.
“When is a monster not a monster? Oh, when you love it.” - Caitlyn Siehl
Chapter 1
It is rare that a day passes without the voice of a pal in need calling on young Bertram, without the shadow of an Aunt or some rummy circ. in need of fixing. Indeed, I think that when things get too quiet my man Jeeves has a habit of manufacturing some trouble, just for his own amusement. Poor thing, he is like a fine, majestic zoo animal, like a tiger pulled straight from the wilds of Bengal, and when he doesn’t have a chance to put that brilliant intellect of his to use, he goes quite off his feed.
Several such days had lately passed, however; the Drones club was quiet, the city cold, and everything was dull around the edges, as if the mid-February chill had dampened not only the air but the light and color and cheer of everything as well.
The day on which our story begins was a bitterly cold and an unrelentingly gray one: the sort that made one think of polar expeditions–of those sensational tales of chappies wandering for days through the snow and ice until they’re forced to turn on one another, to forgo the bounds of friendship and decent society and turn hunter into the hunted, to stain the snow red with blood and eat the poor frozen bodies of their friends.
Or at least, that’s what they do in the absolutely gripping novel which I was in the midst of presently.
Having absolutely no inclination or desire to feast upon the flesh of men, I was quite sensibly sheltering inside from the inclement elements, feeling rather like how I imagine Robert Peary must have felt, huddling down with his dogs and listening to the wintery wind howling outside–when the most peculiar thing happened.

Hello everyone! Happy Star Wars Day!
Welcome back to Krax Watches. Today we’re watching Tales of the Jedi
Episode 1 —
Ashoka’s mom is gorgeous
The baby noises are so precious oh my god stop
I don’t know why the accents threw me off a bit, but it makes sense that Ashoka might not have an accent since she was raised in the Jedi temple
This animation and imagery is beautiful
Baby Ahsoka is fully unphased by the blaster shot right by her head
Ahsoka’s mom being a hunter in their society is awesome
Pav Ti talking to baby Ahsoka like a little adult is wonderful
Pav Ti is my fucking hero. Roaring at the saber tooth tiger
Whatever those cat panda thing are, I want one
I did not except the saber toothed tiger to take baby Soka with it
How to Train Your Saber Toothed Tiger
I literally can not handle her teeny tiny little lekku and her chubby wubby cheeks and her big sparkly eyes
It’s giving Diego from Ice Age
8/10 great mini story
Episode 2 —
Dooku’s hair is… something
Starting off kinda creepy ghost town vibes huh
That was a dog. Like a regular ass dog
Yee old saloon
Young Qui Gon looks like the cave man from Ice Age… wtf
Ooh a moral quandary
Cone heads
Blue light saber Dooku, I thought for sure he’s be a green
It’s interesting to see how far back it goes, the opinion that Jedi serve the senate and not the people
Dooku fully yeeted Qui Gon, I was not expecting that
Based on Dooku’s dark brown robes, he’s in the beginning to turn to the dark side phase like Anakin
Damn I was really hoping Dooku had a last name… or a first name? Idk I wanted a full name
7/10 though provoking but I wanted a little more
Episode 3 —
It is so strange to think that Dooku and Mace had an actual friendship
Of course Mace Windu would be a stickler for the rules
I’m sure these Raxus guys are bad guys or something, but their uniforms are cool
I feel like these people definitely killed Master Katri, but like why?
Dooku is in his fuck around and find out era
Ah yes, the beloved purple light label
“I will have the truth” … and the thing from the last episode about irradiating people like the evil senator. Dooku is every bit as blunt and rash as Anakin but like way more graceful about it
Uuugh how things could have been different if Mace was more open minded about the corruption taking root in the Jedi Order
Fun to see some of our favorite Jedi again… too bad it’s at a funeral
I don’t doubt that Mace did not know he was up for Master Katri’s council seat… but also he could have had an idea that he was in consideration
8/10 I love a good murder mystery with question authority undertones
Episode 4 —
How the FUCK would you find anything in that archive
Ooooooh Master Sifo Dias … Kamino???? Deleted?
Jocasta!!!
Yaddle!!!!
LIAM NEESON
Dooku’s been warning them about coming darkness… irony is so painful
Ahhhhhh Dooku hasn’t even met his grand-padawan yet
“You’re always singing his praises”
“They grow up so fast”
Qui Gon’s like… hey I’m concerned about this. Council is like… sounds fake but okay. We’ll do “something” about it…. Corporate mentality. SMH
Oh my god… Why did I not realize when he said Sith Lord on Tatooine that this was happening right after episode one
AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH no no no no no
Dooku wanted to turn Qui Gon to the dark side
Is…. Dooku going to fight Yaddle….
Fuck this is such an ugly situation
Can you imagine if Yaddle had used The Force to yank Palpatine’s hood off and exposed him early like this
AAAAAHHHHH Yaddle is so wise. She is stepped down from the council
Oh my fucking god…….. she got smooshed!
Oh just kidding! Fuck ‘em up Yaddle!
Fuck that just hurts my heart so much
10/10 made me understand a lot about Dooku and broke my heart
Episode 5 —
All of Ahsoka’s dads in the same waiting room
Oh mullet Obi Wan, how I’ve missed you
Love this outfit, the white leggings are everything
CALEB!!!!! Dippa!!!!
I feel like Jedi are supposed to have a somewhat parental relationship with their Padawan, and Anakin goes straight to antagonistic older brother
REX! MY BOY!
How did this conversation go? Hey Rex, you and the guys wanna fire some blasters at Ahsoka for no reason? ugh… sure I guess
Fuckin Jesse “Sorry Commader!”
Honestly I feel like Anakin is just taking out some weird emotions or aggression out on Ahsoka
Okay sure you want to protect her by teaching her to protect herself, but there are almost certainly better ways to do that… like giving critique to what she’s doing or modifying the challenge with each round
Damn Rex, face shot
I swear to god if they make me watch Order 66 again
7/10 was a good episode, kind of irritated me because Anakin’s teaching style rubs me the wrong way
Episode 6 —
Not the cold open with Padme’s funeral….
NO Ahsoka was there
Sometimes I forget that Ahsoka didn’t have that many female figures in her life….
“She was my friend”
AAHHHHH the Corrie guard….. but now the Empire is in control…. This is like Bad Batch era
The Corries are like….. uh okay?
REX!!!
I love that Ahsoka did a stint as a farm hand after dropping out of Jedi school
Ooooh she used The Force…. are they gonna nark on her??
Ashla…. That’s such a pretty name
Do I smell….. a love interest???
This is… not going to go well
Ooooooh that fucking brother is a squealer
Oh my god… man fuck the Empire
Who the fuck is this?
Cowboy stand off, love it
I forgot she doesn’t have sabers anymore
Fuck that was cool!
OMG this is how she gets her white sabers!
I wonder how much time has passed?
Woooooo! REBELLION!!!
10/10 it always hurts, but like in the right way to be reminded that the Empire fucking sucks and there is always hope.
Since this was pretty short, I’m gonna watch more stuff. Might not do a reaction post though.
Happy Star Wars Day!
May the Force be with you!

Father's Fictional Treasure Hunt: Unraveling the Story of Liam Ward's Buried Chain
Tumblr media
Separating Fact from Fiction in a Viral Tale
In late 2023 and early 2024, social media users were captivated by a story of a father named Liam Ward who stumbled upon a buried chain in his backyard, leading to the discovery of a hidden treasure trove. However, a closer examination reveals that this story was nothing more than a work of fiction that spread like wildfire across the internet. Let's delve into the origins of this viral tale and uncover the truth behind the captivating image that accompanied it.
youtube
The Tale of the Buried Chain
On March 31, 2024, the Abandoned Things Facebook page shared a post featuring a photo of a person holding a green shovel, seemingly puzzled by a buried chain. The caption claimed that a father had found the chain while landscaping his yard and instantly regretted it. This post quickly gained traction, with numerous users sharing the same photo and caption.
Further investigation led to the xnews6.com website, where an article titled "Dad Finds Buried Chain After Landscaping Yard, He Instantly Regrets It" provided a detailed account of Liam Ward's alleged discovery. According to the article, Ward's curiosity led him to pull on the chain, which set off a chain of events uncovering a network of underground tunnels and hidden chambers dating back to the prohibition era.
As the story unfolded, Ward's backyard exploration became a collaborative effort, involving local historians and treasure hunters armed with metal detectors. The excavation revealed wooden crates filled with prohibition-era alcohol, hidden chambers with valuable antiques, and documents shedding light on the town's secret history. The town recognized the historical significance of the find and decided to preserve the tunnels and chambers as a museum, while Ward and his family moved to a nearby house to facilitate preservation efforts.
Separating Fact from Fiction
Despite the captivating narrative presented in the article, it soon became apparent that the entire story was a work of fiction. A simple Google search yielded no records of a father named Liam Ward discovering a buried chain and uncovering a hidden treasure trove in his backyard. In addition, the article failed to mention the name of the town where these events supposedly took place, with a placeholder "[Town Name]'s history" left unedited in the final paragraph.
What emerged from this investigation was a classic example of glurge—a sentimental story that tugs at the heartstrings but distorts or ignores the facts. The tale of Liam Ward's buried chain and subsequent treasure hunt was nothing more than an elaborate fabrication.
Unraveling the Photo's Origins
The captivating image of the person holding a green shovel and the chain emerging from the ground was not related to the fictional story of Liam Ward. Instead, it was originally captured in Alabama in 2019 and featured in a video by the Exploring Alabama YouTube channel.
The video revealed that a bulldozer was used to extract a 13-foot chain from the ground, which was connected to an old 6-foot piece of railroad track. The excavation also unearthed several decades-old bottles, including two Lucky Tiger hair tonic bottles. The moment captured in the viral posts and articles can be seen at the 2:16 mark of the video.
In essence, the real story behind the chain involved a group of individuals in Alabama and had no connection to Liam Ward, backyard landscaping, or the discovery of a hidden treasure trove. The false narrative that accompanied the photo distorted the truth and added an element of regret that was entirely fabricated.
The tale of Liam Ward's buried chain and subsequent treasure trove discovery serves as a cautionary reminder of the prevalence of fictional stories that can spread rapidly on social media. While the image that accompanied the story was intriguing, it was essential to separate fact from fiction and uncover the truth behind the viral tale. By examining the origins of the photo and conducting a thorough investigation, it became clear that the story was nothing more than a work of fiction that captured the imaginations of many.
As consumers of online content, it is crucial to approach captivating stories with a critical eye and verify their authenticity before accepting them as truth.

youtube
The Viral Story Unraveled
The story began circulating on social media platforms, accompanied by a photo of a person with a green shovel, seemingly perplexed by the presence of a buried chain. The caption claimed that Ward had discovered the chain while landscaping his yard, only to instantly regret it.
On March 31, 2024, the Abandoned Things Facebook page shared the post, which was then widely shared across various Facebook profiles. The same photo and caption appeared in numerous other posts, capturing the imagination of readers.
The Fictional Account
The viral post linked to an article on the xnews6.com website, which detailed Liam Ward's supposed discovery of a hidden treasure trove beneath his ordinary backyard. The article described Ward's journey from finding the mysterious buried chain to uncovering a network of underground tunnels and hidden chambers dating back to the prohibition era.
According to the fictional account, Ward's curiosity led him to research the history of the area, unearthing stories of disused mines, rumors of buried pirate treasure, and tales of tunnels used during prohibition to smuggle alcohol. With the help of local historians and treasure hunters, Ward embarked on an excavation that revealed wooden crates filled with untouched prohibition-era alcohol and hidden chambers containing valuable antiques and historical documents.
The article painted Ward as a local hero, inspiring him to pursue a career in archaeology and turning his backyard discovery into a symbol of the town's resilience and the enduring allure of the past.
The Truth Unveiled
However, a simple Google search revealed that this story was entirely fabricated. There was no record of a person named Liam Ward following a buried chain to a hidden treasure trove in his backyard. Furthermore, the article failed to mention the name of the town where these events were said to have taken place, with the final paragraph including the placeholder "[Town Name]'s history."
It became evident that the story fell into the category of glurge, a sentimental tale that distorts or ignores facts to create a heart-rending narrative.
Unraveling the Photo's Origins
The photo that accompanied the viral posts and articles originated from Alabama in 2019. It was a still frame from a video captured by the Exploring Alabama YouTube channel. The video documented the extraction of a 13-foot chain from the ground using a bulldozer.
The chain was found to be attached to a 6-foot piece of railroad track. The video also showed the discovery of several decades-old bottles, including Lucky Tiger hair tonic.
In essence, the viral story took a real-life moment captured in the Alabama video and spun a fictional narrative around it. The events in the video had nothing to do with Liam Ward or a backyard treasure hunt, and there was no mention of regret.
The tale of Liam Ward's buried chain and the subsequent discovery of a hidden treasure trove in his backyard captivated social media users for a brief period. However, closer examination revealed that the story was a work of fiction, with no factual basis. The photo that accompanied the viral posts originated from a video filmed in Alabama, showcasing a chain extraction unrelated to Ward's supposed adventure.
While the story may have entertained and intrigued readers, it serves as a reminder to approach viral tales with skepticism and verify the facts before accepting them as truth. In a world where information spreads rapidly, it is crucial to separate fact from fiction and maintain a critical mindset.

The Fictional Tale of "Dad Finds Buried Chain"
On March 31, 2024, the Abandoned Things Facebook page shared a post about a father discovering a buried chain and instantly regretting it. This post quickly gained traction and was shared in numerous other Facebook posts. The same photo and caption were seen across various platforms.
One of the comments under the post included a link to an article on the xnews6.com website. The article, titled "Dad Finds Buried Chain After Landscaping Yard, He Instantly Regrets It," provided a detailed account of Liam Ward's supposed discovery. According to the article, Ward stumbled upon a mysterious buried chain in his backyard and, driven by curiosity, decided to pull on it.
Little did he know that this act would lead to the revelation of a hidden world beneath his property, including underground tunnels and hidden chambers dating back to the prohibition era.
Ward's research into the history of the area uncovered stories of disused mines, rumors of buried pirate treasure, and tales of tunnels used during prohibition to smuggle alcohol. Encouraged by the possibility of unearthing a piece of history, Ward enlisted the help of local historians and treasure hunters. Together, they embarked on an excavation journey that led to the discovery of wooden crates filled with prohibition-era alcohol and hidden chambers containing valuable antiques and documents.
While the story painted a fascinating picture of a father's accidental archaeological find, it turned out to be entirely fabricated. A Google search yielded no record of anyone named Liam Ward making such a discovery, and the article did not even mention the name of the town where these events were said to have taken place. The inclusion of the words "[Town Name]'s history" in the article suggested that the author had forgotten to fill in the brackets before publishing.
The Truth Behind the Photo
Although the story of Liam Ward's treasure trove was a work of fiction, the photo of the person with the green shovel and the buried chain did have a real origin. The image was captured in Alabama in 2019 and was part of a video shared by the Exploring Alabama YouTube channel.

The viral Facebook post about Liam Ward's discovery of a hidden treasure trove in his backyard has been revealed to be a complete fabrication. While the photo of the buried chain originated from a real excavation in Alabama, it had no relation to the fictional story. It serves as a reminder to fact-check and verify stories before sharing them on social media platforms.
The allure of a captivating tale can sometimes overshadow the importance of truth and accuracy.
As consumers of information, it is crucial to remain vigilant and discerning, especially in the age of viral content and clickbait headlines. By questioning the origins and veracity of stories, we can help combat the spread of misinformation and ensure that the truth prevails.

A simple Google search reveals the absence of any credible sources or news reports corroborating this story. Furthermore, the article failed to mention the name of the town where these supposed events took place, leaving a glaring gap in its credibility.
It becomes evident that this story falls into the category of glurge, a sentimental or heart-rending tale that distorts or ignores the facts to create an inspirational message.
Unveiling the Origins of the Photo
The photo that accompanied the viral posts and articles was originally captured in Alabama in 2019. It was a still frame from a video recorded by the Exploring Alabama YouTube channel. The video documents the excavation of a buried chain using a bulldozer, ultimately revealing an old piece of railroad track.
The individuals involved in the video also discovered several decades-old bottles, including Lucky Tiger hair tonic. The moment captured in the viral posts and articles can be seen at specific timestamps in the Exploring Alabama videos.
Therefore, while the photo may have featured a father-like figure, the real story behind it has no connection to landscaping a backyard or unearthing a hidden treasure trove. The false narrative surrounding Liam Ward and the buried chain is a fabrication that has captivated social media users but lacks any basis in reality.
As captivating as the story of Liam Ward and the buried chain may be, it is essential to separate fact from fiction. The absence of credible sources, the lack of specific details, and the origins of the accompanying photo all point to a fictional tale that took the internet by storm. While the allure of hidden treasures and mysterious discoveries is undeniably enticing, it is crucial to approach such stories with a critical eye and verify the facts before embracing them as truth.

The Tale of the Buried Chain: Separating Fact from Fiction
Tumblr media
The Truth Behind the Viral Story of Liam Ward's Hidden Treasure Trove
In late 2023 and early 2024, a captivating story began circulating on social media platforms, claiming that a father named Liam Ward had stumbled upon a buried chain in his backyard, leading to the discovery of a hidden treasure trove. The story quickly gained traction, with users sharing an intriguing photo of a person with a green shovel attempting to unearth the mysterious chain. However, upon closer investigation, it became apparent that this tale was nothing more than a work of fiction.
In this article, we delve into the origins of the story, debunking the false claims and shedding light on the true events that transpired.
youtube
The Fictional Account of Liam Ward's Discovery
The story, as it was shared on Facebook and other social media platforms, detailed Liam Ward's accidental unearthing of a buried chain while landscaping his yard. According to the fictional narrative, Ward's curiosity led him to pull on the chain, setting off a chain of events that revealed a network of underground tunnels and hidden chambers dating back to the prohibition era. The story further claimed that Ward enlisted the help of local historians and treasure hunters, ultimately leading to the discovery of valuable antiques and documents that shed light on the town's secret history.
However, a thorough search yielded no evidence of a person named Liam Ward following a buried chain to uncover a hidden treasure trove in his backyard. The story lacked specific details such as the name of the town where these events supposedly occurred, raising further suspicions about its authenticity. It became clear that this tale was a prime example of glurge, a sentimental story that distorts or ignores facts to evoke an emotional response.
The Origins of the Photo
The photo that accompanied the viral story, depicting a person with a green shovel and a chain emerging from the ground, was traced back to Alabama in 2019. It was a still frame from a video captured by the Exploring Alabama YouTube channel. The video revealed that a bulldozer was used to extract a 13-foot chain from the ground, which was found to be attached to an old 6-foot piece of railroad track.
The excavation also uncovered several decades-old bottles, including two for Lucky Tiger hair tonic.
While the videos from Alabama involved a similar scenario with a chain being pulled from the ground, there was no connection to a backyard landscaping project or the discovery of a hidden treasure trove. The false story had manipulated the photo to fit its fictional narrative, distorting the truth and misleading readers.
As captivating as the story of Liam Ward's buried chain and hidden treasure trove may have seemed, it was nothing more than a work of fiction. The lack of verifiable details and the manipulation of a photo from a separate event in Alabama exposed the story's true nature. It serves as a reminder to approach viral stories with skepticism and to verify information before accepting it as fact.
While the tale may have captured the imaginations of many, it is essential to separate fact from fiction to maintain journalistic integrity and ensure the dissemination of accurate information.

Valley
Short Story This story spurred a larger idea for a universe of separate stories that I call the Nature and Artifice Series.  I wish to refine my ideas for this universe.  Summary: The world is divided between people whose ancestors cracked the secret to immortality via technology.  This is the upper-class and they regularly transfer their consciousnesses out of their base-bodies into virtual worlds and body-surf into machines.   The lower-class, whose ancestors either could not afford the upgrades or who were found unworthy for other reasons live as mortals do since time immemorial, and live rather humbly, since most of the old technology is gone.   The immortal class has one major problem with their limitless existences: They get bored.  The mortal class, among their may problems have one major one: The immortals like to load themselves into the forms of robotic-animals and hunt them for sport.   The tale of one man, his lover, a tiger and a hunt.

The people of my country are not able to live forever.  This is why They wish to kill us.
Existence is difficult. Once you start doin’ it, there’s always some folks who wish you’d just knock it off with that.  Most of them won’t be happy you ever started in the first place. Whatever it is you like, someone hates.  Where you’re born matters.  Who you’re born to matters – since it is sometimes them who’ll screw somebody up. No one asks to be the tenth child of a poor couple in a land of scarce resources, so not even little babies are innocent when it comes to offending people.  The darndest thing is that you can’t even leave without someone spitting on your memory.  You died of this because you were weak somehow, or that because you were stupid. Oh, you totally deserved that. Goodbye, good riddance.  Death scares people, so choosing to go freaks people out even more than the usual methods. Most of us wind up stuck, pluggin’ along focusing on our own damn selves.
No, you really can’t win a game of Existence.  I’m still playing it and I’m trying to get the best score that I can.
Maybe it was fear that brought the hunters to our Valley.  A bunch of us here are here because our ancestors “chose to die,” as it were.  Some of ‘em didn’t choose to die, but were slated for death, anyway.
If you ask me, I think that it’s Immortal life that’s cheap.  The people beyond the Hills and up on the plateau beyond the Valley-ring… I’m not sure most of ‘em are even “people” anymore.  We Valley-folk certainly aren’t the same as ‘em or to ‘em.  Oh, there are a few Immortals that come into the Valley to try to help the downtrodden.  Some take a few folks back with them, mostly children liberated from abusive parents and the real smart kids who test well at the schools.  When you’ve been beaten and forced to hear all about how you’re going to Hell all your life for bein’ defiant, no one can blame you for jumping on an offer of a tangible Heaven.
The Valley’s been my home all my life.  It’s not a great place, but it’s my place.  It is one of the last areas in the world that’s a shelter for the old style of humans – the “Natural Ones,” if you can call us that.  I can’t say I’m here entirely by choice, myself, but the Immortals consider folk like me – folks my age and of my background to be lost causes – so they don’t make us causes.  Sometimes, one comes back to the Valley after leaving it, having been found unfit for their purposes and “kicked out.”
Seein’ as I’m speaking to another world, I’ll let you know some of our history.  Some time ago, give or take a century, folks cracked the ceiling we’d been reaching for ever since we became aware that we were all doomed. Immortality became accessible to human beings.  Whether it was through science or magic or some combination of both, we do not know. Many in the Valley think that the Immortals are wizards.
It’s said that some of ‘em started offering the gift to everyone without question.  As sweet as that sentiment was, it didn’t bear up against reality.  As I said before, existence is difficult and not everybody wants you in it, even if they might say so.  It just wasn’t practical to keep everyone alive.  It just wasn’t practical because no group can tolerate dissent for long and no one likes the mad.
Maybe someone’s morals didn’t line up with the Immortals’ orders, you see.  Maybe someone was impeccable but something about their mind was a bit off, imperfect and un-fixable.  Maybe someone had lost all of the social games back when the immortality-project was new and could not afford the cost of the treatment.  Many think that cost was the method by which those that became Immortals separated out those that deserved to live forever together and those that were exiled to the valleys.  Here in the Valley, our grandparents sought immortality in the old fashioned ways.  We create things. We love. We breed.
In the Valley we live the way humans did before the rift.  We farm and we hunt.  We cut timber and we run businesses.  My Valley is pretty much a small town the way small towns have always been.  I sit on the back porch of the old place I squat in that I’m always replacing the rotting wood on and watch the rain drip off the leaves on the trees.  There are mostly broad-leafed trees ‘round these parts. I wonder if I’m gettin’ too old to have kids, and it’s the same with my wife, Sami.  Whenever we talk about it, we think that maybe we don’t really want immortality, after all.
We hear the neighbor-kids yellin’ and carrying on and their parents yellin’ right back at them all the time.  Then, there’s the Kellys with their big white house with rusty screen doors with a mess o’ kids who strike us as a little too obedient and well-mannered.  Those kids have haunted eyes, but Sami and I have no proof to help them and our police get a payoff from the Kellys.  That’s how it’s done here, between cults and people who live in apathy, hard workers and substance addicts and folks like me and my own who squat at any place we can find, looking for work to do around the Valley-ring.
We’re a poor small town, even among the other valleys, to say nothing of the Immortal experience of life. When you live here, you hear tell of the delights the Immortals live in beyond the mountains.  The best, the brightest and the strong who live in magic do magic-up their children as soon as they are able, but are said to rarely breed. Rejects are dumped off in the Valley. Those that just don’t fit the ideal, born with minds they cannot fix.  Bodies aren’t a problem for Immortals.  They swap out whatever parts they need and even swap to the latest models in terms of riding physical forms, even if it can be said that their minds are just as physical.  Don’t know what kind of magic they use that separates the two.   It depends upon how you think of minds, I guess, but I think the Immortals see “mind” in terms of electricity.  They have minds like lightning.
We do, too, but we are imperfect.
They “rescue” a few of us every now and again, but for the most part, we will always be too flawed.
My great-grandparents were left alone as were my grandparents and parents.  It is only very recently that some beyond the Valley have taken up the sport of hunting.  We have no idea if the collective approves of it or if it’s just a few kids bored with the mind-immersion games and constructed worlds those folk play in. Somewhere along the way, at least some of the Immortals decided that mortal men no longer qualify as humans.
They don’t hunt like human folk do, though… those Immortals.  Because they are able to play with their essences, they do make quite a game of us when they ambush us.  They announce nothing and don’t even make it known when they enter the Valley.  It isn’t even like how the local orphanage finds their rejected youth on the Valley-ring.  Running into an Immortal with blood on his mind is like running into a bear.  It’s a random event, but unlike with bears one can’t make noises when tromping through the woods.  In fact, the kind of stuff you’d do to scare a bear off you is the stuff that will attract the attention of an Immortal.
They don’t even take humanoid bodies for the hunting trips. These eternal youths like to put on the bodies of mechanical beasts, wolves, bears and such.  I heard tell of one of the settlements on the rim fighting off a metal dragon.  Some of us mortals have been killed – slain and left to lie out in the open ‘cause all the hunters care about is the hunt.  A few folk have gone missing completely, leavin’ the rest of us to wonder if the hunters are taking trophies.
Sami an’ me and a group of my friends were heading back to the interior from a not-so-great day of chasing down squirrels when we committed the greatest of sins.
We were armed.  It was just with piddling little squirrel-shootin’ rifles – when the mechanical tiger came crashin’ through the trees!  Night had fallen, so we hadn’t seen it in hiding. I probably would have sighted the gray glint of steel had the beast stalked us in the sun.  Oh, but that would be fair, wouldn’t it?
I have to wonder what it must be like to have a human-type mind feeling the stretch of artificial muscles of a tiger.  I wondered, later, if the pilot of the great cat (it was actually quite a bit bigger than an organic tiger, a draft-horse-sized colossus) had actually felt those clicking gears that made up his sides, giving the limbs their motion. The creature looked like someone had opened up an old-fashioned watch.  It was the style of the hunting-mounts that was in fashion.
After it had sighted us and was on the chase, the tiger’s “stripes” lit up with a cool-blue glow. They were less stripes and more swirl-like, curls and wavy patterns.  Immortals, as far as I had known them, liked to borrow themes from nature while making them perfectly un-natural.  Maybe that is just their human nature coming through, despite their being grand-mages.  I think that the hunting is a part of it, too.  As many of ‘em as wanted to get away from the harsher parts of nature, I think that humans just have violence in the blood.  In our essence, too, so that becoming lightning and metal doesn’t get rid of it.
At least it must be that way for several bored kids for whom simulators are not enough… the expression of inner-violence.  I hunt animals – to eat, to live.  If I were granted full plates every date without having to hunt, though, I’d still hunt. Our “friend” was just a tiger on the hunt.
“Royl! Watch out!” my wife screamed.  I heard the little pop of her squirrel-shooter and saw the giant metal cat go down.  I felt the wind from a set of its claws, missin’ me by centimeters!
The hunting party stopped and stared as the tiger’s limbs sputtered and sparked.  One of its optics was shattered.  Way to go, Sami!  That’s my lady!   The metal beast stilled and a holographic image appeared above its head, sent out from the remaining optic, it looked like.  Sami’s single shot had destroyed the “brain.”
What stunned me was that the transparent holo-image did not look youthful.  The Immortal’s “spirit” looked to be about my age.  I didn’t think they ever allowed that beyond the Hills! I didn’t think those folk ever chose to age past twenty or so.  Avatars are avatars, I guess… I should have been grateful to see what was probably the tiger-pilot’s true face rather than a cartoon tiger or a smiling pile of poop or something.
The party stared in stunned silence, slack-jawked and gawky.  My honey had just taken down an artificial god.  Definitely not the kind of thing that happened every day, or… ever at all.  It would have been aching-tragic if he hadn’t been hunting us.
The way I see it, the prey has the right to kick and bite and scratch if they can manage it.
“Well,” the image spoke. “You got me.  Sad creatures… your images have been recorded and are being sent out to my world.  Thou art mortal, but you will learn that there are worse things that can be done to you than death!”
The image faded out in a storm of static after it said its piece.
“What do you mean?” my buddy, Bobby, groused, begging the hologram for clarity.
“Nothing good,” I muttered.
Meanwhile, Sami was leaning down, screaming at the fallen tiger’s face, just in case our audio was still being sent somewhere through its systems.
“We might live short lives,” she yelled into its ear, “but our lives mean something, too!”
The tiger’s glowing patterns went dark.
We are waiting for the storm.
