Sorry to say but this story isn't quite dead just yet. Let's not talk about the time between the last installments, however - mostly because I'm hoping to just look the other way at my horrible time management and planning skills. But anyway! Here it is, folks - the parting of the clouds! The angst is finally beginning to thin out. This is still more of an interlude, a stepping stone if you will, before things begin to *happen* in subsequent parts. I hope you'll enjoy it all the same.

Also, to anyone who stuck around this long - my most sincere gratitude to you all. I've been sitting on this part for 9 months now and it has plagued me each and every day. So, I truly do hope you enjoy this little slice. I'm sorry it wasn't worth the long wait. I'll try to make up for all that in the next part.

It was a considerate gesture.

Awards season is always hectic. There’s so much to do and so many places to be, and so little time to do it all in. Sure, there’s managers and assistants and handlers, all helping their talent stumble through the complimentary chaos that comes and goes like clockwork each year. It never ceases to be overwhelming, though.

That’s why little things like this are so stupidly appreciated. It isn’t unusual to receive congratulatory gifts from other artists and companies – in fact, more idols are friends with each other than not. Still, amidst all the rehearsals, schedules, and traveling, it’s hard to find the time to express sentimentality. At least to those not within the same company.

This is hardly Bangtan’s first rodeo, though, and over the years they’ve made quite a name for themselves. Garnered the respect and admiration of their fans and peers. So when they walk into work each morning during this season, it’s far from unusual to see a collection of bouquets or gift baskets awaiting them. Still, it’s humbling each and every time, and they make sure to afford the appreciation each gift deserves.

That’s how Hoseok came across the card. It was tucked into a small assortment of flowers and balloons, all of which were vibrant and radiating cheer. It was his turn to reach the felicitations aloud, so he’d opened the envelope and flashed the others the shiny front as if it were an award itself. Then he’d opened it with his usual boisterous flair, lips poised to sing the song of congratulations within – until suddenly, it felt like all the air was knocked clean out of his lungs. It was signed by an up-and-coming group from one of the smaller agencies, their messy signatures scrawled haphazardly along the bottom of the card. Each name had a small handwritten note above it to add a personal touch, but it was the main message that caught him off guard. The slopes and slants of each character, the way it weighted to the right. The distinguishing little squiggle of a smiley face at the very end. He knew that handwriting.

You.

You had penned the celebratory tidings yourself. That’s why the names suddenly looked familiar. This was a congratulations from the group you now handled. The group that had taken you away from him.

It wasn’t a fair way to view them, Hoseok knew that. He just couldn’t help it. Just as he couldn’t blame you for making the decision to leave. Your contentment at HYBE had been tentative, temporary at best. You were never meant for office duty, to be cooped up in a glass cage all day. And despite the tarnish to your reputation, your work ethic still spoke volumes. Bang PD had made sure of it. It was only a matter of time before someone else came along to headhunt you.

Hoseok had done some snooping, seeking what information he could get on this new group. He even looked into the company itself, ensuring that they would treat you right. That it was a place where you could be happy. There were no red flags to be found, not even as far down as he had dug. He only hoped they would offer you the future you deserved.

A few months into your employment, the group really started to take off. Their mini album had reached the charts, their video channel surpassed 500,000 views, and they’d been nominated for their first awards show, where they would be performing the nominated song. It was also one of the awards shows where Bangtan had several nominations of their own. Initially, it hadn’t been in the schedule for them to attend, but once Hoseok learned that your group would be there – and, by association, you – he'd played every card he had until he’d convinced the company to send them.

Anything for the chance to see you again.

He’d been unsure whether or not you even still thought about him. If you wondered where he was, what he was doing. Who he was with. The radio silence on your end had told him you didn’t. Many times he had wanted to reach out, to try and initiate any form of contact, but he could never bring himself to do it. He was too afraid of the rejection. After all, you’d more than proven that you were just fine without him.

Until now. Until this card. The company could have had an assistant make it up, write out the same old boring commendations and have the talent sign their names to it. Instead, you had handwritten a personal message, made sure the genuine pride and happiness for their seonbaenims was sincerely and accurately conveyed. And if he was a gambling man, Hoseok would bet it all that you even chose the bouquet yourself.

“Hoseok-ah?”

His attention snaps up at the call of his name, soft and questioning. His members are all staring at him with varying degrees of concern. That’s when he feels the wetness in his eyes, the vise around his throat. In his hands, the card has begun to shake.

“What is it?” Namjoon asks, approaching with a careful hand. He takes hold of the card, waits for Hoseok to release it. The paper is creased where his fingers gripped too tightly. Hoseok sniffs and wipes roughly at his eyes as Namjoon scans the message.

“What does it say?” Jungkook asks, leg bouncing in anticipation.

Namjoon’s brow furrows. He looks to Hoseok, who is pointedly staring across the room, before back to the card. His lips purse together in thought as he reads the message again. Deciphers the signatures of its senders.

Realization dawns on him like a sunrise, lighting his face in a rosy recognition. The autographs are clumsy, the sloppy signature of someone unpracticed. All of which are at odds with the firm, delicate writing of a more feminine hand. Someone clearly not a part of the group itself.

Namjoon ignores Jungkook’s question in favor of his own. “Y/N sent this?”

The room titters at the sound of your name. Hoseok isn’t the only one who misses you.

Hoseok swallows and nods his head. “It’s from her new company, the new group she’s working with. And it – it’s her handwriting.”

“I wanna see!”

The other members clamber toward their leader, each vying for a glimpse at the card. Namjoon sounds very much like a father of young children as he scolds their grabby hands, warning against ripping the card. Hoseok takes this time to examine the bouquet closely, poking at the balloons and running fingertips over flower petals. It’s a sweet arrangement, pretty and fun.

One of the balloons pops off its plastic stick and Hoseok fumbles to catch it before it hits the floor. It’s just large enough that it’s a little hard to grip, slipping between his fingers until he’s able to secure both hands around it. Huffing in equal parts annoyance and amusement, he turns to place it back in its rightful spot, when he’s struck by another unsuspecting detail of the bouquet.

There’s a sunflower, right in the middle of everything. Just the one. Usually, the flowers are repeated or at least similar in color and design. He can’t help but suspect that this was intentional, and it so, he’s not sure his heart can handle soaring at such an altitude. Because you told him once how he reminds you of a sunflower, bright and bold and open.

Balloons forgotten, Hoseok reaches out to skim the petals of the sunflower. There’s water in his eyes again, but happiness in his smile.

You haven’t forgotten him. Not yet. Now, he just has to make sure it stays that way.

I fucking told you so

So we have a system installed on all of the toilets in the house that injects a small amount of bleach into the toilet bowl. It's meant to keep the toilets cleaner for longer so we don't have to scrub them as often and it does work for that purpose. But it also means that there are three bowls of poison frequently unattended strewn around the house.

Before we started letting the The Cat™ inside, I made it point to tell everyone in the house that if we did take that step, all of the toilets need to have the lids put down when he's inside no matter how inconvenient that makes things in a house full of people with gut issues.

I've had many an argument with my mother about it since letting Toothless in. I issue a reminder about closing the toilets, and she says, "But he's so good about drinking out of his bowl! I don't think he's going to drink out of the toilet." Then I say, " I don't care. I don't want to risk it." And the toilets still don't stay closed.

There have been a couple of scattered days where Toothless has had issues with vomiting. I pointed out that vomiting is a symptom of mild bleach poisoning, but it was "He's not drinking out of the toilet, he just has a stomach bug," and "It was triggered by a hairball and then the rest of his stomach contents came with it."

I try to go around and close all the toilets when I can, but I can't spend my entire life doing that and they often wind up open. Shortly before I started typing this, I witnessed that cat hop up on an open toilet and start to stick his head in to drink. I stopped him and then I went around closing all the toilets and putting notes on them about the incident.

You would think my mother would have learned to listen to me about these things after the time she insisted on putting an uncovered bowl of candy corn on the coffee table because she didn't think my late cat would eat it. Maybe if I'd made her clean up the resulting orange vomit the lesson would have stuck.

Update: As I was finishing typing this, one of my notes was found. Because I stopped him, they still don't believe me that he drinks out of the toilet. "He was just checking it out." Because obviously I don't know what it looks like when a cat starts to hunker down to drink.

ALRIGHT I FINISHED WITH HALO: BLOOD LINE.

(This post, naturally, contains spoilers for the twist in a 13 year old comic run. If that’s a problem, avert yon eyes.)

The first and most obvious thing I have to say about Blood Line is that the artwork is excellent. It’s not just serviceable, it’s dynamic and colorful and fun and I love it. The artist was Francis Portela, who did it from pencils to inks to colors, and I’m very impressed.

Look at this!!!

If you want to see someone drawing Halo 3 era armor really well (looking at you, my RvBs) there’s a lot to look at in Blood Line.

Plotwise, the story tells us that it’s not about war, or survival. It’s about family. What’s going on here is that Black Team (Black One, fearless leader; Black Two, the curious intel one; Black Three, rowdy heavy weapons guy; and Black Four, the cool-headed sniper) and a smart AI (Iona) have been shipwrecked due to a mysterious alien attack. So has a Covenant team: a Sangheili shipmaster and his younger brother, as well as a gaggle of Grunts and a pair of Hunters.

When Black One and the Shipmaster’s brother are both captured by a Monitor’s Weird Forerunner Bullshit™, the Spartans and the Covenant team up to go get their friends back.

The teamup is fun because not only is absolutely nobody happy about it, but it also highlights a little of the similarity between Spartans and Sangheili (which I’ve been all about since pretty much forever.)

Plus I just really like this little bit where Thon finds out that the Spartans have been bluffing about having ammo left when they super do not, so he gives Black Four a gun. (Three is fine, he ripped one out of a Sentinel.) This actually takes place a little before the last image I posted but w/e.

Speaking of Four and Three, the story on the Spartan end is heavy on them. (I personally miss Two, who was my favorite in the short story with Black Team that we had in Evolutions. She isn’t in the comic much.)

There’s tension between Three and Four because once upon a time when they were kids, they both had a crush on the same girl: One. This is, of course, highly relevant to that second image above. It’s also the section of the plot I’m the most eh about.

As Iona is riding around in Black Four’s armor, she learns that he harbors resentment toward Three. Three caught Four and One making out and reported it. One and Four were brigged for a little to discipline them.

Black Team also had a bitter rivalry with Red Team, which I do not think is any relation to any other iteration of Red Team. During the brig incident, they snuck in and beat the shit out of Four so bad he lost an eye. After that, when Black Team was reunited, they ambushed Red Team and kicked their shit in as revenge. They got brigged for ten days, never spoke of it again, and that was the end of that.

Except.

The spoiler is that it was not One and Four who had the awkward youthful relationship. It was One and Three. Four was the jealous one.

The one who lost an eye was actually One.

Four has felt so guilty about this for so long that he worked up an alternate version of events in his head. Meanwhile, the Monitor is hacking his armor to fuck with his perceptions and convince him to attack Three.

Eventually, though, One and the Shipmaster’s brother breach containment, there is a lot of shooting, and One figures out something important.

On a related note, I really love how many panels they do where they flip between the Spartans in the current day and the Spartans how they looked as unarmored trainees in the same postures. Really nailing that childhood trauma.

The Covenant don’t make it out of this one, as a contrast for how Black Team pulls their shit together. Reff thinks he can take control of the Forerunner installation and become a new Prophet of his own Great Journey, and starts shooting down the Covenant fleet that was coming to claim this prize. Thon tries to kill him (which sucks because Thon always protected his brother when they were kids), Reff kills him instead, and then the Monitor comes back for the grudge match and kills Reff. Reunited Black Team takes down the Monitor, and then prepares to head out and try to find a wrecked Covenant ship they can steal to get home.

OVERALL, I think this one was great. I’m not particularly objective about the relationship drama because I always find love triangle shit really boring and I’m especially eyeroll about it with Spartan-IIs, but I can handle it because the issue isn’t actually romantic tension anymore as the group has grown up. The sibling vibes in this one are very strong. What’s important here is Black Four’s guilt about what he did and how it lost Black One her eye, not an ongoing love triangle thing.

Unfortunately, I also know this is the last we really get of these characters. They are killed off mostly offscreen in a Halo 4 era comic, and I think that’s a shame.

GOOD NEWS, THOUGH: I’m done with Halo comics until I get back to a couple more years into the canon, and they are eventful years.

BAD NEWS: Those years contain a lot of Karen Traviss.

what can i say. i have a brand to maintain and apparently it’s deeply mentally ill characters that spark needless discourse on twitter. i own this. i will be cheating by pairing characters together per listing. order doesn’t particularly reflect anything. i don’t typically tag specific people for these things so consider this post an open invitation to anyone reading to overshare about your favs. GO FORTH

nicholas d. wolfwood. my fucking god. to lead with him feels the most transparent i can stand to be. what is there to even say. he has everything. he's the foil. he's the love interest. he's introduced with one foot in the grave and the other in the church. he's a hitman. he's a priest. he's a bodyguard. kids and single mothers love him. he's an orphan. he's a chain smoker. he shoots first asks questions never. he's screaming and covered in his own blood and hunting you down with a concussion and temporary blindness. he was drowning in foot deep water with seven broken ribs three minutes ago but he's fine now. as a man who once fractured his spine on a rock because of a comical tightrope walking incident and was walking it off two hours later, i relate. something something i could fix him but whatever is wrong with him is way more interesting

minato arisato and ryoji mochizuki (do not separate). uhhhhh persona 3 remake when? please? the earliest installments of this series may have been a bit before my time (not that i even got to play 3 when it was fresh since i didn’t really get a lot of freedom with video games until 2012) so i understand my bias but p3 is still my favorite main series entry to date. and you get TWO depressed moon themed bitches for the price of one with this game? one of them is death. the other becomes an interstellar gateway. i’m a sucker for characters who know each other for a tiny fraction of the larger story but instantly connect like they’ve been waiting lifetimes to meet again. characters whose presence in the narrative is brief but infinitely impactful. one is literally made from the other. what can i say.

goro akechi. while we’re on persona. sorry, we have to get into my Problematic Fav. let me tell you. i’ve been in the fucking trenches. this character is easily 50% of the reason i don’t engage in persona fandom spaces (wrt 5 especially). i love crazy bitches. personally, i love and encourage his violent mania and psychotic tendencies. can’t help being a gemini. can’t help being a foil. he didn’t stop at biting the hand that feeds him; he wanted to chew the whole thing off the arm regardless of who else he had to sink his teeth into on the way. y’all are just still mad that part of that means he can be a pretty unlikable person. at least he was honest with his motivations when you caught him. i get him though. goro’s role in the third act of royal saved the game because you and i both know that new story content wasn’t any good otherwise. he’s there to be a BITCH and keep things REAL. shout out to goro akechi for helping me identify my own dissociative disorder. thanks king

uldren sov and crow. this is a different people, same character sort of situation. sometimes you die and come back with no memories and get to be the same person at heart but placed into a life of extremely altered circumstances and see where that takes you. now i’m aware these characters are kind of divisive in destiny circles (mostly for the wrong reasons). i’ll give it to the people who think he’s being pushed waaaaay too hard into the narrative spotlight in a lot of seasons; that’s totally fair. but he’s had a lot of super compelling arcs surrounding his trauma across two lifetimes. his grief really becomes him. i’m also sincerely just so weak to stories centered around siblings, especially ones dealing with the really harsh and ugly truths regarding emotional abuse in the family and the complexity of familial love.

CONTRACTUAL FIRE EMBLEM MENTION. fe16 is the reason i completely left the fire emblem fandom space, even though it’s been a toxic cesspool for the entire decade i’ve been in any way involved with it. dimitri’s another of my twitter assigned problematic favs (the fandom faction wars surrounding this game were insane) and the reason i’m not even on the platform anymore. i have miles wide weak spot for the blue lions’ found family dynamic and was instantly in love with the way these characters played off of each other in established relationships right from the start of the game. their route tells a very complete, grounded character driven story that hit all the right emotional story beats to make the ending really feel rewarding. it was often times uncomfortable, but it was done well in a way that didn’t shy away from a lot of the ugly parts of mental illness that allowed me to feel very seen. i think it held truest to the standard formula of the fire emblem story structure and did so very well, even if silver snow was written first as the intended canonical story route. still my favorite after four years. classic.

Author’s Note: Here we gooooooooooo. This touches on Hoseok and Reader both. I can also say with about 87% certainty that this is the last part that's gonna hurt before it starts getting better. I will make no promises though! Also, please forgive my egregious use of italics in this installment, and my penchant for the top floor office stereotype. I make no excuses.

You look nice today.

The color of your blouse is new, but flattering against your skin tone. You've let your hair down, too, something you never really got to do in the "field". Not because you couldn't; it was just more practical to keep it swept back. Now, it softens your face, and you look pretty.

It makes Hoseok miserable.

He's happy you're doing okay. Somewhere deep, deep down – he really is. You deserve to be okay; more than, if he's being honest, but it's a start. The work in your new department is steady, keeping you plenty busy, and your co-workers have seemingly accepted you as one of their own. Any rumors tailing you around the office have tapered off and you have more than proven yourself worth your job.

Not that he knows any of this. He shouldn’t know any of this. You definitely haven’t told him. He can’t help it, though. It’s been months and he’s hardly seen you at all. When he does, all he can muster is small waves and insincere smiles, to which you only ever nod curtly. Then you duck away, and he is left to stare forlornly after you. Can he really be blamed for using what resources were available to him to ensure that you were doing alright?

Resources, he realizes, he should probably be using in other ways. It’s what you would have wanted. But he can’t find it in him to visit Minjee again. Not after last time.

He’d tried – he really had. About two weeks after your transfer, he’d managed to reach out to her. Schedule a visit. If nothing else, he needed the release. His shoulders were buried under the weight of guilt he carried for your displacement. No matter how he looked at it, this was entirely his fault. Even if he went back as far as to your proposition to help, he should have said no. It would have been the professional thing to do. He’d signed on for this life, after all. You hadn’t.

You hadn’t signed on for any of this.

The hook-up was a disaster. He tried to get out of his own head, to just enjoy the shape of Minjee and the feel of her in his hands, but he just couldn’t. Because every time he shut his eyes, you were there. If he kept his eyes open, he’d hear you in the words Minjee spoke. Even something as simple and basic as a gasp of breath conjured you in his mind, reminders of the indignant gasps of surprise he would cause with a joke or something stupid he said while with you. And suddenly it didn’t matter how hard he was, how close he might have been.

It wasn’t you.

She’d been understanding, at first. Wrote it off as him having a rough week. She’d kiss his cheek and promise next week, they’d figure it out then. But Hoseok never called, never texted. He never reached out anymore. He was too much of a coward to admit to her that it wasn’t just a rough patch. It was just… him.

Even now, as he stares at you in the lobby from his perch on the stairs, he can’t help the way he aches. To see you, to talk to you, to hold you in his arms. His tongue presses to the back of his teeth with the flavor of your name, wanting to call it out for the entire building to hear. He doesn’t care anymore. Nothing is right without you and he doesn’t know how much longer he can keep pretending. No one is buying it anyway. Everyone knows.

He won’t, though. Just as he hasn’t every day prior, he won’t call out to you. If he’s learned anything from your time together, it’s selflessness. You gave up so much for him without him ever even knowing. The least he could do is return the favor. Treat you to the same courtesy you once showered him with.

Besides, you are happy. It’s obvious in the lilt of your smile, the melody of your laugh. Your eyes have a shine that has been missing for a long time now. There’s no more secrets, no more burden hovering over you like a gray cloud. You are light, you are free.

You are beautiful. In a way Hoseok can never bring out in you.

It’s obvious, now. Bang PD may have gotten it wrong all those months ago when he unjustly punished you and thought it a kindness, or maybe he just knew. Maybe he saw what Hoseok had been blind to from the very beginning. Because there wasn’t a shred of doubt about it anymore.

Hoseok is in love with you. He has been for a while now.

And he will do right by you, even if it kills him.

“…it would be a return to handler duties, at the very least. We thought it only right to present you with the opportunity.”

You sit before Manager Sejin and Bang PD once more, this time in the latter’s personal office. He’d sent for you by way of the receptionist, who’d caught you just as you were heading out for the day. It had been a rush of memory from all those months ago. Still, you’d thanked her and gathered what courage you could summon as you made your way to the topmost floor. This time, as they greeted you, they hadn’t seemed quite as solemn. In fact, you almost believed you saw a trace of amusement in Sejin’s expression as he ushered you into a chair.

You suppose it made sense now.

“I’m… I’m not sure I understand.”

Bang PD smiles gently at you. It’s a lot, he knows. Especially considering an end date to your probation had never been discussed yet. But he’d seen you the past months, watched closely as you worked diligently and kept your nose clean. You were a good kid. If he could offer you something of this magnitude, it seemed only fair.

“If you accept, you’d be contracted as a handler, directly overseeing the group’s day-to-day schedule. You have more than proven yourself capable. Sejin-ssi has even spoken quite extensively to your credit and ability.”

Your ears are ringing from how hard your heart is pounding, the blood rushing in tidal waves through your veins until you are buzzing. From excitement or numbness, you haven’t quite decided. Still, the proposition has left you reeling, and you are desperately trying to catch up.

“And… and, uh, if I decline?”

His mouth twitches thin for just a moment, as if the idea displeases him as much as it does you. “Should you turn down this opportunity, you would remain here, with BigHit. In your current position.”

You nod, accepting one piece of information at a time. “And what are the chances of returning to such duties here?”

This time, his mouth does pull thin. The displeasure is clear in his expression, but it is not at you. It is at whatever he is about to say. You almost regret asking.

“After careful consideration, we do not feel it appropriate to return you to your duties as handler. If we could guarantee you would only be assigned to other talent, it would be different. As it is, with the turbulent way in which things often move in this industry, it is not something we could ensure. And, it has not been lost on us how... distraught J-Hope has been during this trial. We fear the level of professionalism required of such a position has been compromised, and though you have proven nothing but exemplary in meeting our conditions… well, it doesn’t seem that you are the problem any longer, unfortunately.”

Unfortunately. How uncomfortably intimate you’d become with that word as of late.

“I understand.”

And, for once, you do. You’ve not been oblivious to the shift in Hoseok’s behavior since your absence. At first, your heart had soared at the implication that he missed you. That he cared for you as much as you cared for him. With each passing glance, however, it had become glaringly obvious that it would be a problem. That it was a problem. Which was why you had gone to such lengths to distance yourself. Maybe, if you went that extra mile…

Well. It didn’t matter in the long run. Not now that you found yourself sat before your employer, being handed a golden opportunity you had begun to think was only a dream anymore. There was just one catch.

It was at another company. If you ever wanted to be a talent handler again, you would have to transfer.

“Of course, you may take the time to think on it. We don’t expect you to decide right this moment. It is a lot to consider –“

“With all due respect,” you interrupted, startled by your own boldness. You would have never cut Bang PD off before. Now… “I don’t need time. I know my answer.”

Bang PD and Sejin look at you curiously, but not surprised. Not really. “Very well. What is your decision?”

You close you eyes for a moment, take a deep breath. Compose yourself.
