OJT EATS | You Sushi
Tumblr media
If you've been reading these weekly posts for a while, you'll know that at least in our opinion, Japanese food in Taiwan is excellent! A great example of this is one of my favourite restaurants in Taipei, You Sushi.
Tumblr media
In particular, the lunch menu is exceptionally good value and is what I go for pretty much at least once each time I am back in Taipei. The lunch set always starts with a small starter. This time we got a little mini shabu shabu thing with some pork, carrots and potatos in a bit of broth. It was super aromatic and the vegetables were super tender; really good!
Tumblr media
Then it was onto the first bit of the set: a mini chirashi bowl. This had bits of salmon, egg, ikura and tuna all on a bed of sushi rice. There was probably about as much topping as there was rice and it was all so fresh; absolutely delicious!
Tumblr media
Then it was onto the nigiri. First up was a seared salmon nigiri. It was brushed with soy and had a sprinkle of sesame on top. This was one of the best nigiris I've had in a long time. The fish melted in my mouth and the sushi rice was perfectly cooked and seasoned!
Tumblr media
We love a good piece of eel and this was exactly that. The eel itself wasn't as marinated as much as unagi but the sweet soy sauce that was drizzled over it really added a lot of flavour. Just another excellent piece of nigiri.
Tumblr media
Then it's onto possibly my favourite nigiri of them all, the halibut fin. This cut is served slightly seared and comes with a touch of fish roe on top. It is incredibly aromatic and then literally melts in your mouth. It's so good and if you ever see this on a sushi menu; all I can say is make sure you order it!
Tumblr media
The meal finishes with a piece of egg, with the name of the restaurant seared into the top. This thing was juicy, a little sweet and a great end to the meal.
This whole lunch set including 3 nigiri, that mini chirashi, the starter and a bowl of miso soup all came up to less than £15, an absolute bargain in my book! The food is absolutely delicious, incredibly great quality and for the price they charge, just incredible value.
You Sushi, No. 7, Lane 7, Lishui St, Da’an District, Taipei City
Cheers, JL

first, some food posts. we didn’t eat a whole lot of taiwanese food, we mostly did a lot of going to trendy places within taipei city. we didn’t have a lot of time there and i had anxiety tummy for a lot of it lol. anyway, in order:
① din tai fung - a staple, truly. we had soup dumplings, fried rice and some garlic greens.
② a breakfast sandwich, consisting of an interesting combination of egg, cabbage, a meat patty, cheese and peanut butter.
③ a soy milk tea, from the same place as the sandwich.
④ a sweets break featuring a huge cinnamon roll and mango soda.
⑤ ji rou fan - chicken rice. this place is apparently famous, though our taiwanese guide (my friend’s friend) had never heard of it. it was pretty good, though this was right before our returning flight so i had anxiety tummy again, so i didn’t end up finishing it. the rice came with an egg, and three sides. i picked cabbage, tofu and bamboo shoots.
⑥ a tiny little lemon tart, free of charge.

we also went to a hotpot restaurant, where my friend’s taiwanese friend paid for all of the meat and other things we ate, lol.

OJT EATS | XIANG DUCK
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, getting a good Peking duck in London is annoyingly difficult. Short of a few places that do it really well but for a small fortune, it’s pretty slim pickings. Luckily for us, there’s a chain in Taiwan that makes it a lot more accessible. It’s called Xiang Duck and is part of a pretty large but good restaurant group. We couldn’t resist giving it a go.
Tumblr media
We went for a set menu and the first thing that arrived was this trio of appetisers. The golden pickled cabbage was nice and sharp without being too pickled, the wood ear mushrooms crunchy and the cucumber was refreshing; a very pleasant start to the meal!
Tumblr media
Next up was this dish of radish cake. It had been deep fried to a nice crunch and was pleasantly not oily though. Beneath the crunch was lovely soft radish cake with a fairly generous amount of filling.
Tumblr media
Then we had a stew of salted egg yolk tofu. The tofu was melt in the mouth tender and there was a good variety of mushroom and veg all in this thick sauce with a decent amount of salted egg yolk flavour.
Tumblr media
A dish of braised items. They were making good use of the whole duck here as there were a bunch of duck innards. The braising liquid was really flavourful and had quite a kick to it!
Tumblr media
This was what we really came for though. The peking duck came in 2 dishes; first was just the skin. Dipped in a little sugar, these were absolutely delicious! They were crispy but with a bit of give, packed full of flavour with a hint of sweetness (ok, maybe a bit more than a hint) from the sugar; so good!
Tumblr media
We then got the rest of the meat of the duck on a plate with pancakes for us to finish off. This was also incredibly tasty and we finished these off very quickly!
By Taiwan prices, this meal was pretty good for a proper sit down restaurant and the amount of food we got. You can’t compare to London prices for Peking Duck though. It definitely hits the spot when you are craving duck and with a few branches in Taipei, it’s definitely somewhere I’d go back to!
Xiang Duck, Floor 2, No. 2, Section 2, Jinshan S Road, Da'an District, Taipei
Cheers, JL
