Title: Kissing under the fireworks

Description/Prompt: what it says on the tin. Kissing under the fireworks.

This one is a pretty open universe, could be a first kiss, a regular kiss exchanged at New Year's Eve, the fireworks are celebrating that one of them have been crowned King or them finally getting married. Or maybe a romantic proposal at a holiday celebration.

Title: welcome back / welcome home

Description/Prompt: Bucky pulls Tony into a bone crushing hug, extremely relieved that Tony is back home and alive. Bucky doesn't plan to let him go, ever again.

Open verse, could be a no-power AU, or pre-Afghanistan, or maybe sometime when Tony is IronMan. It could be focusing on Bucky's anguish at not knowing where is Tony if he is alive. Or could be the celebration that Tony is home. Maybe how is their life is being affected after.

Title: 19th century AU

Prompt: 19th century-vibes AU (or can be Bridgerton AU), with behaving one way in private and another way in public to save face, love, and searching for one's freedom. (Can be ABO or not)

Limitations: dubcon/noncon between the OTP, eye gore, MCD, D/s verse (a normal universe with a D/s relationship is fine though), unhappy ending, pwp. I would prefer if it was not simple love at first sight.

Title: Sweethearts

Description/Prompt: Punk!Alpha!Bucky gets into a fight, not on purpose - this time - and while he does win, he gets beaten badly.

He tries to walk it off, but he runs into his Omega classmate Tony who is heading home from a late night lab-session.

Tony sees him and is very adamant to treat Bucky's injuries - he lets slip by accident a couple of details about Bucky, showcasing that he pays more attention to Bucky than a "proper" Omega should.

Tony patches Bucky up, and they fall asleep on the couch, Bucky relaxing after a long while.

They end up becoming friends and Tony offers to tutor Bucky.

They end up falling in love with Tony, and Bucky stops skipping class and getting into so many fights. Though Tony patches him up, every single time.

In the end Bucky's grades improve enough that he finishes in the Top 10 of the class.

Title: Iron Man Noir AU

Prompt: Iron Man Noir AU with influences from Spider-Man Noir. It is 1939, Tony Stark is undercover in Berlin in his hidden Cabaret, to gather intel, and help where help is needed.

Why is Bucky there? Is he sent for undercover work, ready to meet some secret contact? Is he a Russian spy sent to gather information about America's plans? Or is he just some normal guy who wandered into the wrong Cabaret at the wrong time?

(These are just some ideas for Bucky, if you have others, let's talk! Bucky could be MCU-inspired or comic-inspired, or a mix or something else.)

Title: Sea AU

Description/Prompt: Siren/Mermaid Tony and Sailor/Pirate/Privateer!Bucky - Tony visits his land bound lover, Bucky.

This one is open verse, I have already listed couple of options for them, but feel free to change that.

The world can be dark - Siren!Tony attracts unsuspecting ships (and sailors) to their death. Either by Bucky's sword or by shipwrecking them.

Could be angst - ala Little Mermaid style (original or Disney version) or a completely new one

Could be hurt/comfort - Bucky is the only survivor of his ship, because Tony saved him. But Tony could only bring him to a lonely Island, where the only way out is for Bucky to build a raft, and Tony provides company whenever he can stay above water.

Could be fluff - Tony and Bucky deeply in love, where in the end Bucky follows Prince Tony into the depths of the ocean, never to be seen again by human eyes.

Or any other combinations! Go wild!

Prompt: Vampire Bucky AU with Bucky. How does Tony find him like this? Let’s brainstorm together.

A/N: It's still very sketchy, total WIP.

Title: Knight in shining armour

Description/Prompt: The Winter soldier is pulled from a burning HYDRA base by IronMan.

Open verse, it could be that Bucky is slowly methodically taking his revenge on HYDRA, and everytime he is injured IronMan comes and rescues him, but Bucky never stays, all the way until the end.

Or maybe Bucky was kidnapped and wiped, and IronMan wiped out the HYDRA base in revenge and now he is taking Bucky home.

Maybe IronMan finds HYDRA during Avengers one and decides to do some recon on his own and comes face to face with Bucky Barnes.

There are sooo many possibilities!

(While the IronMan armour is intended to be the Bleeding Edge armour, this can be changed)

Title: Dragon Shifter AU

Description/Prompt: Tony and Bucky are dragon shifters, Tony with fire magic, Bucky with ice magic. They can't stand each other, but they have to get along now... (Basically any enemies/ frenemies to lovers story you can thing of will make me happy, maybe with arranged marriage or a common goal/ enemy?)

Title: Warlord Tony AU

Prompt: Everyone has heard of the warlord Iron Man, a cunning monster whose troops mercilessly slaughter his opponents on the battlefield and who has never lost a single battle. According to some he's not even a man at all: After all, he can cut through weapons and people alike, and survived direct hits that would kill a normal man. His army turns wins fights against superior numbers and his cannons never miss their target. Very few people know that he also hides quite a number of secrets in a calm little valley at the heart of his territory, in a town called Arc.

For Bucky, you can go wild - whether he's part of a tribute, an enemy soldier, an assassin or something else. We're looking forward to talking about plot ideas!

Title: Alpine

Description/Prompt: Biker Bucky finds Alpine on the side of the road, abadoned and hungry. Bucky decides to take Alpine to the vet, unfortunately this being - your choice of holiday - there are not many vets are open and most of them is for emergency only.

Bucky worried that the kitten won't survive the night, runs into vet!Tony who is about to head home. However seeing the kitten, Tony decides to help and nurture the kitten. Alpine survives the night and becomes a bike-riding cat, usually traveling on Bucky's shoulders or back pack.

The story could be a falling in love at first sight, or Bucky bringing all kinds of animals to Tony, because Bucky trusts Tony to take care of them. (There maybe a cracky story hidden in there somewhere too *wink*)

Title: Late night dance lessons

Description/Prompt: Bucky is baking late into the night as a super soldier he doesn't need much sleep and baking is a relaxing hobby. It's 2am, the night is quiet no people around and his favourite music is playing from the stereo.

This is the moment when Tony arrives (could be a long night at the 'shop, or maybe just coming in from an overnight flight, maybe this is the time they regularly meet), they get into a small talk which slowly evolves into Tony staying and talking and Bucky reminscens of old times and what he can remember. It's a soft and tender talking the one people only have at 3am. Then an old times music comes on, reminding Bucky of nights when he went out to dance. And Tony seeing the look on his face offers to dance with him.

Title: Feats of Flexibility

Description/Prompt: Bucky is doing push-ups, and someone accuses him of showing off - he had been in the gym for hours now - and Bucky claims that this nothing challenging to him, so naturally he is challenged into proving it.

This is escalated into more and more complicated and complex tasks ending in Tony sitting on Bucky's back while he is doing push ups, with his feet in the air

Poor Tony who only come down to keep in shape and tries valiantly to not stare at those feats of muscles and flexibility gets roped in

Title: Fantasy Secret Identity AU

Description: Bucky standing in front of a wall plastered with posters of all sorts, among them some wanted posters, one for Iron Man, one for the Winter Soldier.

Prompt: Tony Stark is a well-known noble and mage, and Iron Man is a well-known villain. Of course, the two aren't connected at all. Until Tony Stark takes on a bet to figure out the identity of the man in the armor - and hires James Barnes, a washed-up mercenary to find any clues possible. It's just as well James has no links to the feared assassin called Winter Soldier, because that would be making things complicated.

I'm always open for other ideas but am really hoping for some identity porn :D

Title: Promise of the Desire to Live

Description/Prompt: This is a Pokémon crossover piece. The Pokémon egg on the left belongs to Magearna and will hatch in her original coloring (which are pretty much Iron Man colors). This Magearna will be the partner of Tony. The Pokémon egg on the right belongs to Mewtwo and will have almost the same coloring as Shadow Mewtwo except that his tail will be navy blue. This Mewtwo will be Bucky’s partner. Here’s the prompt –

The Avengers are called to deescalate a situation involving a young and semi-inexperienced Inhuman who lost her family due to a suicide bomber. After receiving her powers mere days after that traumatic event, this young girl, no more than 12, is able to sense who has a strong desire to commit suicide and send them to places/people/beings that need help and are able to bring them back from the brink of suicide.

Omega!Tony and Alpha!Bucky are sent to a Team Plasma lab with an egg incubator in the center of the room with two eggs in it. They take the eggs.

Limitations: Story cannot be ended with the Pokémon hatching. I want a full-length Pokémon journey from Bucky, Tony, and their Pokémon. I want them to find a way to travel between the Pokémon world and their home world. Also, must have A/B/O. No rape.

Title: Bunny Tony/ Wolf Bucky

Description/prompt: No matter what the media and Hollywood tried to say, there wasn't really that much difference between predator and prey presenting people. A jaguar wouldn't love climbing trees and napping all day anymore than a squirrel would hoard nuts and play deadly games with cars.

But whenever Tony's gorgeous rear and fluffy tail wind up in Bucky's line of sight, he has to clamp his teeth against a strong urge to bite. And when Tony comes down to the kitchen each morning, hair a mess and silky, floppy ears on display, Bucky has to fight more possessive urges. He's sure neither the team or Tony would appreciate Bucky dragging the bunny off to his territory...Would they?

Title: Hold out your hand

Description/Prompt: The only thing I feel needs to be heavily included in the fic would be about Bucky's relationship with his arm and how Tony helps him with that (though it doesn't technically need to be the main storyline)

If you want other input then I love tropes especially soulmate type situations and Bucky recovery fics, but pretty much any trope is good.

Description/Prompt: This particular piece was created because I really wanted a porcelain ballerina tony and nutcracker-ish bucky.This could be a first meeting scene of sorts with bucky being a shameless flirt but the writer could expand and add more scenes of course! I mostly just wanted a very cute and magic realism-ish vibe.

Title: Scheherazade AU

Description/Prompt: Based on Thousand and One Nights, war chief!Bucky refuses a spouse and threatens to kill anyone he's set up with. Tony ends up married to him and talks every night, leaving off right before bed so Bucky has to keep him around another day

Limitations: no noncon/heavy warnings. Also really not into stucky, even as background influence/past feelings. Also don't want any feminization of Tony by having him as 'weaker' or a damsel. 1/22/21 to 1/23/21

Marvel Part 3

This is the biggest chunk of the films by a bit, and a lot happens in here. I think there are four origin stories, and there’s even a sequel to one of those origins within the same group. A LOT happens, and in general things have been settled into a comfortable formula. And yet here we have some new directors, a lot of new characters, and some new takes on old favorites. Now that the MCU is so established, it seems people were more comfortable taking risks with these stories, and I think it pays off in audience satisfaction. Also, yes, we did watch seven movies in two days. What can I say? We’re good kids staying locked down.

Ant-Man – Peyton Reed, 2015

I’m very disappointed that this could have been an Edgar Wright movie. It comes so close, with the way Luis tells his stories and the structure of the final battle between the two tiny men. And yet it is definitely not Edgar Wright. It’s a pretty basic superhero origin story. That being said, Paul Rudd is a national treasure and absolutely carries this film. He is a delight to watch as the funny, clever lead, as he always is. He was made to be a quippy genius in a cool suit. Okay, that makes him sound like Iron Man. In a way, Ant-Man is Iron Man Lite. He’s not rich, he’s just an everyday guy. He is an engineer, but maybe not a genius. Most importantly, he’s genuinely funny, not rude, and he cares about his family. I do think the characterizations are what make this movie compelling, not the plot. It ties in very nicely to Civil War, and I enjoyed watching it directly before the epic crossover event. Having light-hearted characters with less worldly stakes keeps the MCU grounded and keeps superheroes from being too out of touch.

Captain America: Civil War – Joe and Anthony Russo, 2016

I hesitate to say this, but I think this might be my favorite movie in the MCU. I can’t quite put my finger on why, because there are certainly more epic team-ups, and I hate when friends fight. And yet, I still love this film. One, you get Hawkeye in a non-Avengers event, which is always terribly exciting. Two, you get the character intros of some of the best characters ever (Spider-Man and Black Panther). And three, you get an intense debate about morals that actually gives you something to talk about after you leave the theater. It feels rare to have a superhero movie that doesn’t have morals hitting you over the head with righteousness and love. This movie really makes you think about control and consequences. And I love a movie that makes you think. I’m also slightly biased because I had a great premiere experience, I got to see an early screening and the exclusivity made it more exciting too. It pulls on a lot of existing threads within the MCU and brings the conflict to a head in a spectacular way.

Spider-Man: Homecoming – Jon Watts, 2017

The stand-out role in Civil War, seeing Spider-Man on the big screen under Disney’s purview was certainly a treat. I appreciate that they didn’t go for yet another Peter Parker origin story, instead jumping in after he’s already become Spider-Man. We all know the story of the radioactive spider bite by now, so getting to see Spider-Man grow as a friendly neighborhood guy is delightful. It’s a high school coming-of-age movie that happens to feature superheroes. The stakes are brought down to a relatable level. Asking out the girl he likes is just as important as catching the bad guy, perhaps even more so. Tom Holland is the absolutely perfect casting choice, capturing both being an awkward teenager and being a web-slinging badass. And Tony Stark gets the opportunity to right his wrongs and step up to be a father figure for someone who desperately needs one. I do wish we got to focus on Peter’s story a little more, instead of using him as a pawn to fulfill Tony’s character arc. But that’s a small criticism for an otherwise lovely movie.

Black Panther – Ryan Coogler, 2018

Black Panther rocked the world when it came out, and rightfully so. Here we have a Black superhero who brings a respectful version of African traditions to the big screen. The worldbuilding of Wakanda is spectacular, showing that this hidden nation knows more about technology than anyone else in the world. It flies in the face of negative stereotypes about African peoples and blends aspects of tribalism in without making them feel like tokens. I think I like the Dora Milaje the best, the squad of women warriors who protect the king. They are so strong and beautiful with their shaved heads and spears and I love them. After Black Panther’s introduction in Civil War, it was nice to go into this movie and see what he dealt with in the weeks after his father’s death. Once again, seeing things in chronological order helped clarify any confusion I had about the timeline of things when they came out months apart in theaters. T’Challa had a really rough couple of weeks in there. Oh, and Michael B. Jordan is also excellent in his role as Killmonger. It’s a great movie for so many reasons.

Doctor Strange – Scott Derrickson, 2016

I feel like a lot of people don’t like this movie. It is true that Doctor Strange is a little bit like a discount Tony Stark, a man who thinks the rest of the world is below him because of his superior intellect. At least this movie has the decency to break him down to nothing before giving him ridiculous superpowers that serve to reaffirm that belief. I think this movie is fine. It’s definitely one of the more visually arresting films, which I always appreciate. On visuals alone, I’d pick this over something like Ant-Man or Thor 2. The concept is also relatively cool, making it seem like wizardry can be learned by anybody. However, it does feel out of place in the timeline. We’re getting close to the end of the line here, and all this movie does for the overarching plot is introduce the Time Stone. But while I think it’s a perfectly passable origin story, it doesn’t make sense here at this point in Phase 3 of the MCU. Plus Marvel didn’t really need another overpowered quippy white man. Again, this is a fun movie to watch, but for the first time in awhile, this is better on its own than in sequence.

Thor: Ragnarok – Taika Waititi, 2017

Taika Waititi is a creative genius and should be allowed to take over the entire film industry. What We Do in the Shadows is one of my favorite movies of all time and I’m so glad that he is now on the map and taking over the Thor franchise going forward. He took the goofy Thor we all know and love and turned up the humor without compromising character, adding in nods to the previous movies and the fans without offending anybody. To say nothing of Korg, arguably one of the best side characters we’ve seen in the MCU thus far. After seeing it for the first time on my birthday, my brother announced upon leaving the theater that this was his new favorite MCU movie. I do think that this ranks pretty highly for me. It makes Thor fun again. Plus it’s just a really good movie. Like it features characters we already know, and then uses characteristics we haven’t seen before to make them well-rounded and more interesting to watch. And it’s stylistically very well done too! The scene with Thor using his lightning and the flashback with the Valkyries and the fight on the rainbow bridge... It’s all so good. And I haven’t even mentioned Jeff Goldblum. There’s a very good reason my brother likes this movie so much. It’s because it’s excellent.

Ant-Man and the Wasp – Peyton Reed, 2018

Now, Thor: Ragnarok leads directly into Infinity War, so I do sort of wish we’d gone into that next. But it was more important for us to watch Infinity War and Endgame back to back, so we decided to throw the Ant-Man sequel in here. This movie is about what Ant-Man and his friends were up to immediately before the events of Infinity War, maybe even during, because he wasn’t in that movie. And it sets up some VERY important plot points for Endgame. It makes a lot of sense to release these in the order they did. This is still an okay movie, but it ultimately feels like filler. Which is a shame, because these are good characters. Paul Rudd is still a delight, and so is the supporting cast of thieves. At the end of the day, it does feel necessary to watch this movie at some point so that the other ones make sense, but it also doesn’t feel like it has much impact on its own. The villain is interesting enough, the dialogue is still snappy, but the most impactful part of the film is the end credits scene when you see the Pym family get dusted. It’s a preview of what’s to come, even more haunting if you know it’s coming. But the part of the movie that makes you sit up and pay attention should not be hidden away in the credits.

Let’s Talk #SpiderMan: The “Amazing” Andrew Garfield Films

Despite all the memes about Tobey Maguire and the nonstop criticism of Tom Holland, the Spider-Man who tends to be mostly forgotten is Andrew Garfield.

For my thoughts on The Amazing Spider-Man (and The Amazing Spider-Man 2), feel free to keep reading. There will be spoilers.

In The Amazing Spider-Man, Peter Parker deals with a wide range of emotional events, from his parents’ mysterious deaths, his Uncle Ben being gunned down, having a crush on Gwen Stacy, to becoming Spider-Man. Through two films, he also faces off against the Lizard, Electro, Green Goblin, and Rhino.

The elephant in the room has to be acknowledged. The films came out as the Marvel Cinematic Universe ended Phase 1 and kicked off Phase 2. The previous trilogy never competed or interacted with Marvel’s other film franchises, despite a couple of failed attempts, but these films had the unfortunate awkwardness of serving as Sony keeping Spider-Man and his characters away from the MCU.

The films are a mixed bag. That is not to say the Sam Raimi trilogy is superior, as both film series have their respective flaws.

The biggest difference between them is Peter in high school. While the 2002 film did start with him and the others in high school, it became irrelevant by the second act when they graduated. The first film mostly explored the concept of Peter balancing his high school life while also being a superhero, which led to a great scene where the Lizard fights Spider-Man at school (and one of Stan Lee’s best cameos).

The major casting choices were really good. Andrew Garfield gave a far more laid back performance than Tobey Maguire. He realistically played Peter as a teenager and avoided overacting like Maguire would at certain moments. Emma Stone was really good as Gwen Stacy, making her very proactive by how she knew Peter’s identity and helped him out.

In general, both films had great visual effects, good costumes for Spider-Man (with the first one being visually distinct), and good acting. Where the two differ is everything else.

The Amazing Spider-Man is a great film. It nicely introduces new interpretations of the characters, has a lot of great moments with Gwen and Peter, finally made the Lizard a major villain after the Sam Raimi trilogy constantly teased the idea, and features an exciting uplifting climax. It also set up the next film’s major threat with a mysterious figure serving as somewhat of an anti-Nick Fury.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2, on the other hand, squanders that potential to near-sabotage levels.

It still had a few cool moments, such as the opening, the confrontations with Electro, the death of Gwen Stacy, and Peter’s breakdown. Jamie Foxx was good as Electro despite the goofy costume, which admittedly is still better than the one from the comics, and sporting a GBA cartridge on his head. Sadly, the film is an overall muddled mess of setup for nonexistent sequels.

It abruptly kills off Norman Osborn right after introducing him. Harry Osborn is said to be Peter’s friend yet the two act like amnesiac strangers. Harry’s development into the Green Goblin was rushed just to force the aforementioned death. The mysterious person appears again and at one point passes by Doc Ock’s tentacles and Vulture’s wings. It comes off as Sony being so eager and hopeful the sequel would be successful they preemptively announced the villains for the third film.

The ending was badly anticlimactic, with Spider-Man taking on Rhino, a character with barely any development who went from being in a car chase to operating a giant robot suit.

It says something when the best part of the film was the mid-credits sequence teasing another film.

For those unaware, Sony made an agreement with 20th Century Fox to allow Marc Webb to direct the sequel (he was in the midst of a contract with Fox). In exchange, Sony would add a preview of X-Men: Days of Future Past during the credits in a way reminiscent of the MCU’s post-credit sequences. The preview was of Mystique freeing mutant soldiers in Vietnam. All home media releases omit this from the credits, abruptly cutting from “It’s On Again” to the instrumental.

The sequel’s failure at the box office led to Andrew Garfield fighting with Sony, Sony putting a Sinister Six spin-off on hold (among many unnecessary spin-offs), and the abrupt cancellation of The Amazing Spider-Man film series.

In 2016, two years after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 came out, Sony and Marvel were able to work out an agreement integrating the character into the MCU starting with Captain America: Civil War and now being played by Tom Holland. Said film came out a month before the originally scheduled release date for The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

Could a third film have potentially redeemed the series? No.

Regardless of the hypothetical sequel’s failure or success, fans would have seen Sony as clinging on to the rights and still keeping him out the MCU. The situation could have devolved into something similar to the 2015 Fantastic Four reboot over at Fox, where Marvel sabotaged the brand by canceling the comics and refusing to even acknowledge the film.

Alternatively, could Andrew Garfield have appeared in the MCU? No.

The MCU lacks teen superheroes, with Spider-Man currently being the only one in a world full of adult heroes and demigods. Integrating the Amazing films would have created too many plot holes, especially since the first film came out two months after The Avengers and both films are primarily set around the same time frame (2012) in the same city (New York City). The only way Garfield could have reprised the role was if they placed Peter back in high school again, which just sounds ludicrous and highly unlikely.

The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel are a mixed bag which have just as many issues as both its preceding and succeeding film series. The first one is a great film that best represents Spider-Man while the sequel is the textbook example of putting all your eggs into a single basket. Of the two films, I can Highly Recommend the first film but only rent or stream the sequel.

The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 are available to own on 4K, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital.

DEATH BATTLE Review: Mario vs. Sonic (2018)

A classic match… With the modern rules… Today, we are seeing an old battle with new rules, better animation, and superior research. Bare in mind, that since the original battle was animated, researched, and written by Ben, so there might be some new things, and there might be a lot of different ideas.

It’s also the first time we’re going to see Wiz and Boomstick animated too.

And the overall episode only really brings them into focus when doing a bit, a demonstration, or a bit of math. So it’s not like we’re watching these two do stuff like use a laser pointer to showcase certain things, we’re seeing them only when it would be funny, or when some math would be needed.

The initial preview states that they are going to focus on the core games, and any material from anything that would be supported from the games.

Mario’s Preview:

Mario’s preview has all the usual stats that you’d see in an initial preview.

And a quick thing about his full name is in a notecard.

(Personally, I’d go with what’s more recent).

And then there’s Mario’s arsenal. Which is uh… Pretty big.

Mario’s arsenal is very big. And with those indefinite uses, he’s got more on him easily.

(Mario easily takes arsenal in this scenario).

He’s also fast enough to react as a being of living electricity. From Mario Odyssey.

And a strength scaling feat is added too.

And Mario having a Tyrannosaurus tossing feat is backed up by the solid gold chain chomp feat back in Mario Sunshine.

And Mario’s feats are a sight to behold.

And Mario punting castles puts his best strength feat at about…

That.

By the looks of it, Mario’s definitely earned the title of Nintendo’s posterboy.

Sonic’s Preview:

And Sonic takes off at blinding speeds, with, what else, his background.

Sega’s lack of caring about how biology works in the Sonic universe is also mentioned. Like how real Hedgehogs aren’t that fast, they aren’t blue, and how Foxes are their natural predator.

Sonic’s equipment isn’t as vast as Mario’s, but it’s still pretty impressive considering that some of his are natural powers, and not limited to power-ups.

And Sonic doesn’t. exactly have Lightspeed capabilities. If one recalls from the Metal Sonic vs. Zero battle, Sonic isn’t exactly light speed, but he’s definitely at least hypersonic.

Sonic also can outrun lightning. Meaning that hypersonic is more or less lowballing Sonic’s speed stat.

And outrunning the black hole thing in Sonic Colors puts Sonic’s best speed at about…

That.

Sonic’s Super Forms also get a quick rundown as well.

And to top it all off, Sonic also has quite the tub of feats to pull from.

Sonic’s certainly earned the title of being Sega’s mascot.

The Battle Itself.

Blindferret is animating this bout, and it’s the second time they’re animating something since Smokey vs. McGruff. Mario will be voiced by Kamran Nikhad while Sonic will be voiced by Nicholas Andrew Louie. Music is done by Therewolf, and is called Retro Rivals.

So, if you saw the sneak peak, you know that the reason the fight starts is because Sonic decided to tan in Mario’s spot.

(And here I thought the reason for Yang starting the fight with Tifa was petty).

Sonic lands the first hit, and until Mario manages to land a good blow on him, Sonic is left to try for a Wisp. By the looks of it, Mario isn’t being granted Cappy, but considering Sonic’s ability to resist mind control, there’s probably no reason to believe that Cappy would have made a difference.

And after using his Catsuit and Double Cherries, Mario manages to force Sonic into the water, and get him to use up his Water Shield.

This forces Sonic to utilize his Super form, and makes Mario use his own Star and Wing Cap. Until the battle gets taken to space, where the resulting clash causes…

That. The resulting clash causes THAT.

And the trip back down paints a clear picture as to who would win, considering that Mario up and throws Sonic downward at what can only be assumed to be way faster than terminal velocity.

(So uh… Does this mean that Luigi could beat Tails, or…?)

Verdict + Explanation.

So, in terms of arsenal, it was pretty even… at least considering what each power up could do. But Mario’s wider range of Power Ups gave him a leg-up.

Sonic had speed, no argument there. But Mario had strength. So the big question was if Mario could hit Sonic.

And considering that Mario could react as a bolt of electricity, and pilot the Star Diver, the answer would be yes.

Another factor in the fight would be durability. While both were impressive, Mario’s durability feat would blow Sonic’s strength out of the water.

And Sonic isn’t that much tougher than Mario either. It was only a matter of time until Mario managed to hit Sonic with an attack that could kill him.

Overall impression.

After thinking about it for a while, I came to realize the biggest reason Mario won was because he had more games in the time between the original and this than Sonic had. Mario didn’t really have many feats that could back up being able to hit Sonic back then, and while I’m trying to look at this objectively, I’m a guy who spent the last few years under the impression that Sonic would beat Mario more times than not. Not that I just blindly believed DEATH BATTLE, I just didn’t think that Mario could actually manage to hit Sonic at all to land a killing blow.

It’s a bit hard to come to terms with that, but when you write a story using the characters that appear in DEATH BATTLE and have to make them interact in a scenario where they’re not killing each other, you learn how to no longer give any shits about results.

Overall, the animation was stunning, and the music was really fun. The rundown was pretty good too, and it really feels like it was a big thing. Though, now I’m worried that the fans will start demanding that they go back on other episodes and do those over too, so that’s going to be fun. Can’t wait to see a bunch of angry fanboys demanding that they do Batman vs. Spider-Man over again because they’re still salty about the Dark Knight’s loss to the Web-Slinger (And yes. There are still people being angry and salty about it in the comments section).

8.5/10. It wasn’t a battle that I wanted, nor was it a battle I was expecting for number 100, but it was still fun.

Next Time…

I feel kinda underwhelmed by this matchup. And to be honest, I blame Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite for making people think that this was a better matchup than Ultron vs. Brainiac.

But I guess one extremist robot against another isn’t too bad of a fight. Though this now begs the question as to who Brainiac could fight.

Venom

This morning I went to the movies and saw “Venom” starring Tom Hardy.

Right now, the reviews, added to the advanced screening reviews, are not great. I can say that although it is not as bad as the accumulated score on Rotten Tomatoes would lead you to believe. Its not that great either.

I did not hate this movie. I was quite entertained. But it is not that impressive or noteworthy. It was well acted. It had some exciting parts. It just did not have enough of them. And, I thought the humor was a little heavy handed.

One thing I was disappointed with was that the studio had promised to make this an R-rated film. Seeing as how R-rated superhero movies proved that they could be profitable (Logan, Deadpool 1 and 2, The first two Blade films). But, they buckled under the desire to cast a wider net and try to get as many people into the theaters as possible. Maximizing profit by having Venom turn away from the camera before biting someone’s head off or having Riot form blades and kill a whole room full of people without a single drop of blood.

If it had been R-rated, not only would the fight scenes have been gorier, but the “body horror” aspect of the story could have been more gruesome. Especially when the symbiotes rejected their hosts. And the scene where Venom fought the swat team would have been an excellent showcase for gore. But its not PC to kill cops in movies. Even the crooked ones.

I have been waiting for this movie since I was a kid. Reading Venom comics and seeing him mess up some bad guys. I did love seeing Anne as She-Venom. And Riz Ahmed did a great job as the mad visionary, billionaire villain. He was almost as slimy and two faced as Musk or Bezos.

On top of all this I got a complementary comic book with my ticket. Yay.

Overall, this is not the Venom movie I wanted it to be. I wanted it to be way better, yet it does the character way more justice that Spider-Man 3 did. Its baby steps leading to hopefully something better. Kind of how The Purge just existed for the far superior sequels to be made. Hopefully this film will earn enough to justify other Venom films.

Stay after for a mid-credits sequence. And after the credits, there is an extended preview of Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse.

After waiting seven days between games last week, we get to double dip with games in back to back nights! Auburn knocked off the Lobos last night, and their opponent tonight, the Richmond Spiders, beat Wisconsin 62-52 in the early game last night.

Get to Know Richmond

Richmond is a 5-0 squad out of the Atlantic 10 Conference led by Head Coach Chris Mooney. This is Mooney’s fifteenth season at the helm of the Spiders, and in his tenure he’s 255-215 with two NCAAT appearances. The last two seasons have been rough on Richmond, though, with a combined 25-40 record.

Things have started off nicely for Mooney’s squad this year, with a 5-0 record through the season’s first few weeks. Those five wins include victories over Wisconsin last night, and an overtime win over Vanderbilt on 11/14. They currently sit at #83 in KenPom, but their win over KenPom #51 Wisconsin is better than any of Auburn’s wins thus far.

Richmond has a dynamite offense centered around three upperclassmen guards who all shoot 3s well. In fact, the team as a whole is #2 in the country shooting 45% from three. The backcourt of Blake Francis, Nick Sherod, and Jacob Gilyard combine for 54.4 of the team’s 86.4 points per game. Led by Sherod, the three of them also combine to shoot 21 3PA per game at exactly a 50% clip so far. Is there any question about how Auburn needs to defend them?

Gilyard, pictured above, runs the point for Richmond. At 5’9” 160 lbs, he might look like a familiar sight to Tiger fans. He’s having a hell of a year so far, with an eFG north of 77% (compare to Samir’s 67% or Bryce’s senior year 61.5%) and PER of 31.3. Auburn should have a distinct size advantage on him tonight, but that didn’t stop another diminutive point guard we all know and love.

In the front court, the Spiders are led by 6’10” junior Grant Golden, who’s nearly nabbing a double/double every night with 11.6 points and 9 rebounds. Richmond like to go to him down low, but he has struggled finishing with just a 51% FG%.

Richmond employs a 9-man “rotation”, but their top three guards all play 30+ minutes per night. Andre Gustavson, a sophomore guard out of Finland, is basically the backup guard to each of the big 3 listed above, but even at 18 minutes he only averages a little over two points per game. The Spiders bench really does not contribute much in the way of points, with the starting five tallying 377 of the team’s 432 points (87%) so far this season.

Keys for Auburn

I hinted at it above, but the key to this game for Auburn is perimeter defense. Okoro and Doughty will need to play their guys tight when off-ball as to avoid open looks at the 3 point line, and I’m fully confident in those two to do it.

Richmond is also an awful rebounding team on their own end, pulling in just 25% of their offensive boards. This is probably in large part due to them raining threes all the time, but 25% is bad for anyone. I’m curious to see how much Wiley plays against a team that doesn’t want to go inside, although I think a better strategy would be to get Wiley and Mac on the floor together. Mac should be able to defend outside while playing power forward, and Wiley could be a wrecking ball on offense like he was last night.

The Spiders have a BCI (Ball Control Index) of 2.39, which if you read the advanced box score primer you’d know anything above a 2.0 is really good. That being said, the Richmond offense is not super turnover prone, so it will be interesting to see how the Auburn defense plays them.

Also, Richmond is currently in possession of a nice chunk of colonies at the moment. A win tonight would see Auburn absorb three sizable population centers in Nashville, Milwaukee, and Richmond. Auburn will have a chance to consolidate its territories in conference play, but until then the strategy of grabbing up cities and ports (Mobile, Savannah) should work well.

Game Prediction

Auburn should be able to contain this Richmond team with their superior size and athleticism. BUT, this Richmond team has the same trick up its sleeve that Auburn did last year - if they get hot shooting, it doesn’t matter how much bigger and faster you are than them, they will score in bunches. I like Auburn to get to 7-0 in this one, though, and we might see Austin Wiley post a third straight double double tonight.
