“Many years ago, there used to be something called ‘conflict of interest.’ No longer, I’m afraid. Today, we all bathe in the same river.” ― Gore Vidal, The Last Empire: Essays 1992-2000
When the hapless and ineffectual Therese Coffey resigned from her post as Secretary of State for The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs many people would have heaved a big sigh of relief. At last Rishi Sunak might appoint someone who could bring the river and sea polluting water companies to heel.
That pipe dream was shattered within 24 hours. Sunak has appointed Steve Barclay as the new Environment Secretary, the man who refused to talk to doctors and nurses during the NHS pay and recruitment strikes, leading to a massive increase in NHS waiting lists.
Although Therese Coffey was useless at controlling the polluting water companies, she at least had the advantage of not being in bed with any of them. Barclay can make no such claim as his wife is a senior executive at Anglian Water.
Anglian Water has attracted headlines like these:
“Anglian Water ordered to pay £156,000 for sewage pollution. The court found that negligence and a lack of maintenance were to blame." (GOV.UK: 13/09/19)
And
“Anglian Water has been fined more than £1.2m after admitting causing pollution in three counties.” (BBC News: 17/10/22)
And
“Anglian Water fined £2.65m after sewage discharged into North Sea. Largest ever fine imposed for environmental offences in the East region.”  (GOV.UK: 28/05/23)
The Anglian Water annual financial statement for 2020/21 recorded group revenues of £1,351.8 million, with an increase in profits of £68.2 million. The Financial Times (21/06/22) reported that:
“Anglian Water pays £392 mn dividend to owners as customer bills rise.”
And in November of this year it was reported that Anglian Water:
“...paid its executives an eye-watering "£2,424.555 in pay and perks last year.” (Yahoo News: 14/11/23)
Maybe I am being cynical but I cannot see Steve Barclay doing anything that is likely to jeopardise his wife’s  (and by extension, his family’s ) income, can you?

Wet wipes containing plastic to be banned from sale in United Kingdom
London: Wet wipes containing plastic will be banned from being sold in the UK following legislation to be tabled in Parliament soon, the British government announced on Monday, as the world marked as Earth Day. UK Environment Secretary Steve Barclay said the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) will table the legislation for England before Parliament’s summer recess in…

I have been reading stories about women complaining about doctors not listening to them for two decades.
The idea that it is in any way related to "gender ideology" or "wokery" is pure, unadulterated, fantasy bullshit.
This tool of a Health Secretary is going to spend thousands -- maybe tens of thousands -- of pounds to take the NHS back to the dark ages. And that is money that could actually be used to improve it -- money for staff salaries, money to fix buildings, money to improve services.
But no -- instead of actually doing something useful, he is going to spend it on a bigoted, transphobic agender because the Tory party wants to pander to the religious right and the racist, bigoted fucks in its own base.
There are literally no words to describe how fucked up this is -- the NHS is in a death spiral and they are going to make it worse.
What a bunch of dicks.

A call for Ambulance provision by some Sussex MPs
A call for Ambulance provision by some Sussex MPs
Ten days ago I wrote this piece that was adopted by the Argus newspaper which focused on Ambulance issues with a particular response to SECAmb. It was a response from a number of calls from MPs and responses that involved Maria Caulfield that took place on 13th July in Parliament. That piece was published on Monday the 18th July. One of the elements I mentioned was that sadly no Sussex MPs were…

Double Whammy
According to Diabetes UK 4.3 million people in Britain have diabetes, 90% of these having the avoidable type 2 diabetes. Diabetes costs the NHS £10 billion a year, and in some hospitals over a quarter of beds are taken up by  people with diabetes. The number of people with diabetes has doubled in the last 15 years and is continuing to rise.
The great tragedy of type 2 diabetes is that it is largely avoidable.
“Research shows that living with obesity is the single greatest risk factor, and accounts for 80-85% of someone's risk of developing the condition, and our previous data revealed that the number of people living with obesity in England has almost doubled in the last 20 years from 6.9 to 13 million."  (Diabetes UK: 05/04/21)
One of the major causes of obesity is the consumption of ultra-processed foods such as mass produced bread, pre-packaged meals, breakfast cereals, sausages and other reconstituted meat products, yoghurts with sweeteners or stabilizers, chicken nuggets, frozen meals, crisps, soft drinks, biscuits, etc.
We may think we can avoid ultra-processed foods but the evidence suggests otherwise. According to the Guardian (02/02/18):
“Half of all the food bought by families in the UK is now “ultra-processed”, made in a factory with industrial ingredients and additives invented by food technologists and bearing little resemblance to the fruit, vegetables, meat or fish used to cook a fresh meal at home."
As bad as ultra-processed foods are for adult health, think how much worse they must be for the heath of developing children, yet
“Almost a third of baby and toddler foods sold in the UK are ultra-processed, risking children’s long-term health and development."  (Guardian: 08/05/23)
This Tory government has known about the links between ultra-processed foods and the rise in diabetes for years.
“MPs have criticised the Department of Health and the NHS in England for being "too slow" to act in preventing and treating diabetes… Being overweight is the main risk factor for type 2 diabetes, and 90% of adults with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese.” (BBC: 22/01/16)
Despite this knowledge, the government, rather than introducing policies to wean people off ultra-processed food, is actively promoting its consumption. As recently as February this year Sunak’s Tory government was recommending ultra-processed food as part of a healthy diet.
“An app launched by the UK government, supposed to encourage healthy eating, has been found to be promoting ultra-processed foods.” (www.schoolfoodmatters.org:01/02/23)
The Grocer magazine (25/05.21) asked this question:
“Why is government incapable of saying ‘avoid ultra-processed food’?”
The answer is provided in Great British Life (18/05/23) when it reported:
“The Soil Association said it was “deeply concerned” about the influence of the food and drink industry on UK health policy as the NHS Food Scanner app continued to recommend biscuits, cakes, crisps, chocolate puddings and fizzy pop as “good” options for a healthy diet.”
The sad truth is, this Tory government puts corporate profit before public health. Our health,  and especially that of our children's, is being put at serious risk so that the giant food companies can continue to reap massive profits.
“Millions of people in UK facing food poverty as supermarkets announce record profits.” (Sustain: 22/05/22)
But this isn’t just a UK problem.
“Top 100 Food and Beverage Companies for 2022: A Year of Succulent Profits. 2021 could be called the year of meat and soft drinks. All of the top companies in those two categories had blowout years, adding billions of dollars to their top lines and similarly handsome increases to their bottom lines.”  (Food Processing: 05.08.22)
The food-processing companies and the big British supermarkets are both powerful and influential when it comes to determining government food policies. They are motivated by one thing only: profit. If the largest profit to be made is by promoting and selling ultra-processed food then so be it. To the supporters of neo-liberal free market economics the only duty of corporate management is to maximise profits for their shareholders. Any concern for the health or social consequences of their actions is in the words of Milton Friedman ”pure and unadulterated socialism” and no Tory government wants that.
But where is the “double whammy” of the title? It is in the insane situation whereby the government is now offering a “cure” for obesity by making a drug, costing millions of pounds, available on the NHS.
“THE UK should be "front of the pack" in dishing out weight loss drugs to obese Brits, Steve Barclay said today.
The Health Secretary last night announced a £40million two-year pilot that will look at ways to make obesity medicine accessible to patients outside of hospitals.” (Sun: 07/06/23)
Rather than curing obesity at source, by reducing the amount of ultra-processed foods we are being sold, the government is giving taxpayers money to the big pharmaceutical companies to produce weight-reducing drugs. The message is clear, people are to be to encouraged to go on eating ultra-processed food, and then be supplied with a drug to reduce the excess weight gain that results. It’s a win-win situation. The food-processing companies and super markets  go on making massive profits, and the pharmaceutical companies go on making massive profits. The only losers are our children and the 28% of England’s population who are already grossly over-weight, but who cares about them? Clearly not Steve Barclay or Rishi Sunak.

Horror Characters Preference - How they celebrate Christmas with you
Happy Holydays! This is a little gift i wrote for you all :)
I wished I could have added more characters and some escenarios ended up a bit short, but this is the best i got in the few writing time i had in between holyday preparations.
Fandoms incluided: Chucky, The Walking Dead and Stranger Things.
tags: @losersclubisms @helie-brain ( i added Daryl for you) @richiethedigidestine ( i remember how much you like Carl)
Chucky
Andy Barclay
Tumblr media
-Only after growing tired of hearing you sing ' You are a mean one, Mr Grinch' he ends up confessing why he hates Christmas.
- Andy is the sort of person who would give speeches about consumerism and children being brainwashed by commercials. It is a very important topic for him because it ruined his life, over the years he blamed himself a lot about wanting a Good Guy for his birthday when he was 6 and manipulative advertisement played a big role on that.
- He is the least materialistic person you have ever met. Although he has a hard time expressing what he wants or needs you have clear that he prefers people over things.
- If it would depend on him, he would spend Christmas like a regular day, but he has you and Kyle getting him out to get things and do holiday stuff.
- Decorating the tree was easier to convince him about, you made the cabin look like a home and he couldn't complain of that.
- It made him feel a bit fuzzy inside. His place would not be a prison or an Isolation spot anymore. You wanted to stay with him and turn it into a home, your home.
Junior Wheeler
Tumblr media
- Christmas is Bree's favorite holiday and she is your favorite of your boyfriend's parents, so you are there to celebrate.
- You also want to support Junior because you know Logan has a way of always ruining his mood somehow. He would never let him be happy, not at least in his own way.
- For so, you were there to do it. Perfectly aware of his musical inclinations, you encouraged him to sing Christmas songs with you for the little kids in the party. Junior knows that you like that and only you could have convinced him of joining.
 - People are shocked, Logan receives tons of compliments and advice coming even from some of his friends regarding the unexpectedly discovered talent of his son.
- You casually mention that you play piano, a subtle act of support in that context.
- Junior is so happy that, if there weren't formal appearances to keep, he would have kissed you ríght there.
Jake Wheeler
Tumblr media
-Christmas is a hard time for him. He used to love it as a kid but since his mom died nothing is the same. The season reminds him so much of her and his father is not a good source of support. Lucas gets even worse around the holydays and Jake has to either avoid him or babysit his drunk ass.
 - One of his saddest memories involves him having to decorate the tree alone, feeling the loose even harder' because the season makes him feel like he is alone in the world.
- That's precisely why it meant so much to see you at his doorstep visiting to help him with the decorations. You even brought some yourself along with some other Christmas plans.
- He almost cried while eating your gingerbread cookies, that's how strongly emotional you got him with such simple acts.
- Lucas gave you the side eye as he was passing by. He knows who you are and he is not supportive of your relationship, but that time you didn't mind in the slightest.
- In fact, you previously fought the urge of bringing a mistletoe just to not get Jake in trouble.
- You love your boyfriend and wouldn't let the assholeness of his father get in between your chances to give him happiness.
Bonus
Chucky
Tumblr media
- He is the gift for one of the kids on your family gathering.
-Switched the original gift for a box containing him, actually.
- Good luck surviving his holyday fun.
The Walking Dead
Daryl Dixon
Tumblr media
- Celebrating anything is complicated in the world you live in, almost impossible for most people. When you were freshly arrived the Alexandria people were trying to push parties down your throats and Daryl had the worse reactions to that.
- He hates to be pushed into anything, even more when it is about a celebration he wasn't a fan of before the apocalypse.
- One thing was for sure, his reactions of discomfort were quite adorable to you. At some point of the party he got tired of giving deathly stares so he wouldn't be bothered and he stayed outside. He was out in the front not only refusing to participate, but to even be present.
- Of course, you followed to make him company and make sure he wouldn't freeze. After all, If both of you wanted, that party could be just the two of you.
Carl Grimes
Tumblr media
- If he gets the chance to celebrate, he wants to make it nice for his little sister. Carl feels he was fortunate because he got to experience a real Christmas and she will never have that.
- Even if she is too little to remember, he wants to make it special for her and you help with whatever you can. Sacavange for things, arts and crafts, whatever necessary to get some nice decorations and presents.
- Your determination on the topic ends up convincing Rick of accepting the idea. As soon as he heard your reasons, even Daryl was up to participate. He has a soft spot for the little girl and Carl is doing so much for her.
- When the time comes, all the people you consider family are there. It's your first truly felt Christmas since the end of the world.
Stranger Things
Steve Harrington
Tumblr media
- He doesn't get much comfort and family at home, but since he has you and his little friends he found a family where he belongs and that manifests on his attitude around the holidays.
- His gifts are super thoughtful. Everyone knows he is gonna surprise and that makes you nervous. You fear he would give you the most perfect gift and yours for him wouldn't be as good enough in comparison.
- Meanwhile, Steve stresses more about what to get for Dustin, considering how far he is from his peculiar likes and interests, than what he planned for you.
- For Christmas Eve he gets invited to dinner by the Hendersons and that means you also got invited. Dustin loves you both and wants you to be there with him and his mom.
- When you arrive the boy is watching ' Silent Night, Deathly Night'.
- " No horror movies tonight." You commented to him. " It's our first Christmas together. We have to make it nice. "
" But it counts as a Christmas movie!" He playfully complained. " It's an open film subgenre."
- Steve laughed and messed with his hair, loving to hear him being himself and you trying to make things the normal way.
- You both in your different ways make him insanely happy.
Eddie Munson
Tumblr media
-I get the feeling that his celebrations are the closest to how It's used to celebrate where i live.
- Loudest Christmas ever, it's 6 pm of Christmas Eve and Eddie is already blasting music. He is a happy and unapologetical dude and that's how cheer hits him.
- You are neighbors, so you are constantly crossing over trailers to see how each other is going as you await for the night. You have to get reminded to get back whenever someone needs any of you for something on your preparations.
- Eddie and Wayne end up joining you. Your family is on good terms with them and getting all together is better than having to stand how you and Eddie leave out of sudden to see each other.
- At some point of the night, once you have enough time to dedicate to your families, you follow him into the next step of your celebrations.
- Surprisingly crashing late at Dustin's and pumping up the party.
- Steve mocked you for showing up late, he and Eddie have a secret war going on over who amazes Dustin the most.
Bonus
Billy Hargrove
Tumblr media
- You have been dating for a while and your mom suggested you could invite him to your Christmas party.
- Everything goes fine when you are introducing him to your parents but, as soon as he saw him, your little brother reacted as if he would have seen the reaper. He clumsily tried to dissimulate, but you know him well enough to notice he is terrified.
- That’s how you find out that the dude you were seeing was also your brother’s bully, the nameless guy he would always complain about everytime he came back home made a scared mess.
- You dump his ass without hesitation. He may be charming and super hot, but he showed his true colours messing with a little boy, with your family.
- Nothing can excuse that.
