unfinished pieces of 2022
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I lied the last one is from this month, pieces are in order from oldest to newest so the first two have missing stuff from the current Canon.
Small explanations of each images below - >
first features tamtam and his white cazoar reaching the southern coast for the first time, in a strongly idealized view of the real crossing. I absolutely love to remake it one day as this is quite old and features off-saddle, clothing, and even cazoar anatomy (long tail), id like to have this remade alongside a historically accurate one in a single post. Just to show how the "realistic" oil paintings (a technique created in late AOS by kyhuines) were commissioned to romanticize reality and make it glorious. To be then used as propaganda for GA (in kaar'kchir). the drawing itself feels super empty and i just didn't know what do do to fix it, so i abandoned it!
The second is about south-west kyhuines ( because of blue gular skin) relaxing in their typical highly climbable city, with a female having a snack and a male with smoke coming out of opperculums, background as family groups that i initially wanted them to eat together, on the wall behind them i was planning on decorating it with neolithic like cave paintings. the drawing was started before i gave them tahofahs so in the piece its missing on the two kyhuines you see. started this drawing on FA then got bored of that program to go back on ms paint for the render, i feel like its a bit too decorated for a kyhuine town, just something about it isn't good so i won't continue.
and now for last! just a sub-adult (no blue feather reflection or white undercoats) north-east maanul (characterized by having dark feathers due to the rock coloration there, from ancient volcanic activities. and also having the ear hood skin covered in feathers) going out for a hunt in the large open sea. as maanuls live in coast and cliffs, with it the sea sometimes cut in two parts, by natural rock formation, large mangrove roots or even corals. hunting is done by going in the open sea, usually with several people, using primitive yet efficient harpoons. I wanted to add a marine animal under them that is just curious about the maanul, but i left that drawing so now it will be a blob of color with white under! the maanul isn't wearing anything which isn't normal, while rendering i was planning on adding minimal bracelets, necklaces, and a bit more, as the rest would be left at home.
plus sub-adults don't have access to certain types of permanent jewels as well as dyes, scarifications, and tattoos so they're naturally less decorated. also, peaking out the head to probably look at something interesting, not to breathe! with tahofahs hanging out to smell, when diving back it will be retracted as if wet its almost impossible to smell for several minutes.

eastern kyhuine ideas
Tumblr media
Outdated art , wrong posture and legs, please look at my recent posts for their current look instead
thinking of just, making kyhuines fancier, because maanuls have more pattern variation it's not fair is it? anyways here's my first eastern kyhuines , since eastern maanuls are the brightest out of the species t I was thinking of making eastern kyhuines special too. they're a bit uncanny to common kyhuines (salt, south, west) that aren't aware of how eastern look like because their head is so rounded.
I think about it like if a red fox meeting a Tibetan one

orginally in ms paint, then quickly experimented with the brushes of krita on it today, worldbuilding text about the piece under ->
southern kyhuine taking a break in the afternoon after a training session with this large calf. Surely around his village as just lying down on their stomach (a sign of relaxation) would never occur in wild areas, because kyhuines need to stay alert of their surrounding.
the headpiece is made of bones, that are sanded down, and then painted on. it is originally a thing from the kyhuines of the salt desert (a dried-out sea that contains well, salt, and many fossils), which are located up to the south so technically "northern". tho they are not called northern in world, and are referred to as salt kyhuines.
the concept of south, west, east, and north is kind of not right, as kyhuines are from the middle of the mega continent of altuyur. they used to have a restricted view of the world with a map that was quite small and not even aware that oceans existed at these times, they did not venture out to certain chains of mountains which is why it took so long for the "first contacts" to happen with maanuls. Old maanuls maps, only map out some coasts the rest being vague and the middle being completely empty of information. Both species would have that similar phrase to call non-mapped parts, "beyond the beyond"
I put first contact in "" because it is implied that it did happen maybe thousands of centuries ago, during what their equivalent of prehistory is (history for them does not start with the appearance of writing). Because there is cave art in coastal regions that show maanuls interacting with badly drawn little things that sort for assemble kyhuines, the same goes for kyhuines in their desert biomes, having cave art of them interacting with weird giants. But these happened so long ago that they're not documented in history apart from these odd pieces of art, so with time passing each species thought these were just drawings of spirits, or with time turning these into cryptids.
So funnily enough some cultures had cryptids of something that for them was a legend to then at late AOS or GA realize that these cryptids kind of reassemble the opposite species that they're in contact with now
a bit of ramble but yeah, thank you for reading! not sure how clear this can all sound without having a map to show it, i still have no idea how to draw one id love a beautiful one but hmhm i don't know how
edit: also the square shapes on the clothe means health, so with a dot in it its sort of like "good health", clothings can have symbols to give good luck. The square for kyhuines during GA became a wide symbol across cultures to signify health because in others it could mean something else, so medics of GA with uniforms would have that square symbol on their arm or somewhere else where it would easily be seen

I will stop using the word empire from now on
I just think the word empire always wasn't appropriate to how maanuls colonies work as well as it does not Corolates with their way of thinking, it will be replaced by the word region or by stuff like south /north and ect as well as be called those in maaniali, for example maak'thao means west and keezeh means east.
On altuyur there isn't countries or borders, just bunch of colonies of people living a very community-based lifestyle, colonies can be the same number as a village to a small city (big colonies like these are rare, there is only one per region) The rest of the colonies are scattered around and will have contact with their nearby colonies.
They're so driven to being a social species that they will raise any children despite not being related blood wise, they think that spiritually they all form one and will compare themselves to the equivalent of mycelium on altuyur, because they say that they're a network that is connected to one a other. (This all also goes for kyhuines)
So I think using the word empire feels too much like if they had a country, which they don't and is a concept they wouldn't like because to them you can't own a part of altuyur or decide where a country starts and ends, they would think you're stealing from haanu (or in kyhuines case "Mahiiti" because this also applies to them)

ooh is there a calender of sorts? i was wondering how everyone would gather for the festivals in the south if they didnt know what time they occurred!
yes, the south has its own calendar that is also the most sophisticated of the 4 regional colonies of maanuls! while some might keep track of time with flora blooming at certain times of the year, wildlife reproduction, moon cycles, and even types of megalithic structures. the southern maanuls wrote down each moon into a calendar with events in it.
The biggest colony of the south where everything happens (which is called Knà'yark, literally meaning south), has a sort of circular calendar carved into stone in the middle of the surface village. Because yes in the biggest colonies, half will be carved into the cliff and built against it, while the other half might be built on the surface of the cliff. But I'm going off-topic right now, architecture is a whole other big subject I won't be going into now
The circular calendar is divided by each first moon cycle and when a month has a special event, the box will have a decorative drawing signifying x festival or smaller stuff like a colony banquet.
Since they know that other colonies are fond of their most important events, they send travelers months prior to the festival. Maanuls do not have domesticated flying animals like kyhuines, so they will travel by foot which can take a while. tho they only send travelers (also called huak'ahbe) to the biggest colony of the west (maak'thao) since it's the closest. Huak'ahbes are dressed up in bright tissue with scenery patterns, and large colored rings around the neck made out of plant fiber to show that they're special. When small colonies of the west see one pass by, they know it's to announce maak'thao of its southern event.
Keezeh the biggest colony of the east, has a southern calendar written onto a sort of paper that resembles papyrus to keep track and travel in advance, they receive a new calendar for the next event each time they go to the south. Same for the north (Yàarïk), tho northern maanuls show up less at these festivals. Typically, there will be more western maanuls, then there's some eastern and the less common will be northerners. Because traveling down to the south for the north is quite hard, northerners also might use traveling boats but it is surely not as complex as a huge galleon. But the north has boats that are considered to be some of the best in that task.
Tho in the silver age, when kyhuines and maanuls mixed together, southern maanuls start to use the domesticated animals of kyhuines for sending the invites. The job of huak'ahbe becomes obnoxious, but the clothing gets preserved for the sake of remembering history before the two species were together.

What holidays are there? Do they celebrate any birthdays / coming of age things?
They have many holidays concerning how some of the moons of the gas giant will do a full rotation of it, maanuls which in their habitats can experience rain will have holidays about the rainy season and just dance around in the rain wearing gears that represent creatures of the sea, they will celebrate moon cycles because one of their moons moves around altuyur slower than the first (takes about a month to), many natural events will be a holiday because they think it's their way of saying thank you to their respective goddesses.
I'd like to one day list all of the holidays they have because I plan on doing a lot, both are a festive species (especially maanuls because they have nothing to worry about in their natural habitat).
They're just peaceful and don't engage in conflict although the Golden age is a sort of exception as some parts of altuyur's west coasts was in conflict with kaar'kchir, but beside that age they're just glad to be on their moon they will even celebrate a successful hunt (south maanuls and some kyhuines) by dressing up as the species they killed and then do dances which is their ways of thanking the deceased animal, for them that's how they honor it for a last time.
How do they count their age? They don't do a birthday party, they don't even keep up on which day they were they born. But each year they fully shed their feathers and that's how they count their age, instead of saying "I'm 24 years old" they will say "I have 24 feathers" some regions will count their age with moon cycles instead. But they do heavily celebrate when they reach adulthood!
They will do a rite to signify them reaching an important step of their life. the whole colony will celebrate it and the one who reached adulthood will be dressed with heavily jewels and heavily decorated clothing, they will be carried around on a wooden structure by other members of the colony and will deposit them to where they will all feast together for the whole night.
