AITA for scamming my ex out of an extremely valuable virtual pet?
🐓🥤to recognize. This might be a very long post with a lot of added context for a very niche hobby and a very small actual conflict.
I religiously play a virtual pet site called Chicken Smoothie. It's a pretty old site as far as virtual pet games go, starting back in 2008, so there is a pretty solid established site economy. Just for some context, Every pet on the site has a rarity, ranging from "OMG So Common" to "OMG So Rare", being the most common and most rare respectively. But there are rarities within those rarities, where some OMGSRs can be worth more than others based on species and demand. For example, an OMGSR dog from 2008 will be worth more than an OMGSR rat from 2008 despite being the same highest rarity and year, because people prefer the dogs over rats. These pets can get extremely valuable. You can't sell them for real money (according to site rules, but of course there's a black market), but the site has its own virtual currency you can buy (with real money) and trade for called Chicken Dollars, and you can also trade a valuable pet for other valuable pets. It gets very complicated, with the community coming up with its own set of value terms each pet can have. I'm not getting into specifics there, that's not important.
Every year, on December 18th, CS has gift boxes you can adopt from. These gift boxes can contain any rare pet from any previous year, including special "Unreleased pets" that you can only get from these Dec 18th boxes, with a very slim chance. These unreleased pets are some of the most valuable and rarest in the game.
Recently, I had seen my ex posting on the forums. I didn't know he had an account, he had made it within this year, long after I got the fuck away from him, and I only knew it was him because he uses the same username everywhere. This person had groomed me, physically abused me when we were together (we no longer live anywhere near each other, thankfully) and has always been emotionally manipulative. He does not know I play, and he wouldn't recognize my account as me. I took a note of his account and left it be for a while, until December 18th hit and I took a peek at what he had got. And what he got was one of the new Unreleased pets, which currently at the time of writing this only looks like a box of cereal. (Most pets on the site have growth stages.) And even better, all his groups were open for trade, so I took a chance and sent an extremely terrible trade. I told him that this pet would only be a recent rare, and I offered him a "Very Rare" rarity (but not very valuable) pet from 2018, telling him I was overpaying. (In the CS community, this is known as Ninjaing, and it's Not A Good Thing To Do). I didn't expect him to accept it, I at least thought he'd be smart enough to ask in the trade advice thread that is literally pinned on the home page for December 18th, but he didn't. He took my word for it and accepted the trade, and now I own an unreleased pet that will eventually end up as an OMGSR.
What I did was not a bannable offence. He will not get his unreleased pet back. The CS mods are laughable at worst, incompetent at best, and don't do anything to stop scamming. They have an "eh, sucks to be you, sorry, be smarter next time" mentality when people get scammed (Which is insane because there are literal single digit aged children allowed on this site!!!)
After taking a bit to think about it, I do feel a bit guilty because I really would not do this in any other circumstances. I hate scamming. I did what I did out of anger and contempt, and I do feel a bit guilty because in essence, I scammed a new player that didn't have much else and didn't know any better.
I'm still keeping that unreleased cereal box no matter what though
What are these acronyms?

you smile while snapping the photo, if he wants to act like a baby and whine for his daddy all the time, you swore that’s what you’d make him. from the soaked diaper, teddy bear, and pacifier, you’d say you’d done pretty well, even if you were far from over.
nathan was a rich boy, more like his dad was rich. born into generational wealth, he grew up horribly spoiled and entitled. the first conversation with him was just him whining about how his dad is making him get a bachelors degree in business in order for him to take over his company. you worked your ass off to get into college, had numerous scholarships, honor roll 4.0 student. you were smart. smart enough to know a pawn of a man when you see him.
it was easy to get him to date you. wear a some low cut blouses, compliment his body and his car, give him your notes a few times (not that he ever would read them). after a month or two of dating, you had him wrapped around your finger.
from there, it was even easier to help along his “potty troubles”. one two many beers on a night out, distract him from using the bathroom, then ask him to go smoke. something he’d confessed on a night out was a funny story about how he can’t “hold it” too well if he has a coughing fit. after his third or fourth hit, you watch him loose it, piss glistening down his designer jeans and onto his genuine leather loafers. you comfort him, letting him tie your jacket around his waist (even if it barely helps) on the cold and soggy walk home.
from that moment on, you see how paranoid he gets about having another embarrassing accident. he gets careful, going to the bathroom frequently at parties, avoiding smoking in groups. so you have to get creative.
next school break, you spend it with him and his parents at their summer home. you watch him drift to sleep while you warm up some water. dipping his hand in the bowl you watch the dark patch spread from his boxers to soaking the silk sheets.
you deliberately wake up before him, walking quietly downstairs to his parents. acting flustered and concerned, you tell his parents about his little accident…
to his horror, they dote on him. waking him up gently, getting a maid to clean his sheets while he showers, even taking him to the family doctor. funny enough, you knew their family doctor rather well. so well in fact, you confide in her about all the accidents your boyfriend has been having. you tell her how severe his potty training troubles have become, never waking up in a dry bed, multiple changes of pants throughout the day, once he couldn’t even make it through sex! so even if he’s “too shy” to mention all these accidents, the doctor knows better, recommending he be put in diapers full time while she sends some tests to the lab for a week or so.
you knew your white lie worked when you saw him get back from the doctors, fresh diaper bulging through his slacks.
you tell his mom about the thickest and most baby-like diapers you can find, claiming you did your research and these are the best on the market for his needs. and of course she only wants the best for her little boy, so she orders 4 cases and overnights them.
from there, it all seemed to fall into place naturally. when the lab tests come back negative, he’s still ordered to stay in diapers 24/7, maybe switch to pull-ups when he “felt ready”(which you would make sure, is never). you recommend a new state of the art therapy for his issues, regression hypnotherapy. his dad barely looks over the study you forged, before handing over as much money as his son needed for the most intensive sessions they offered.
it’s been two months of the hypnotherapy, and he feels more like a toddler you babysit than a boyfriend. you watch him throw a tantrum after losing his video game, stomping his feet and demanding his pacifier while his face turns red and his diaper turns yellow. he insists his teddy bear come with him everywhere, even making me change it’s diaper when i change his.
talking the the hypnotherapist, she’s confident he’ll be drooling and filling his diapers with more than just piss come next semester.
best of all, his dad seeing his son’s decline back to infancy, offered you his company when you graduate, as long as you promise to marry and take care of his “little boy”.
in the end, it was his own fault really. he shouldn’t have relied on his daddy so much if he didn’t want to end up a diaper-filling baby.

Premise: Days in the life of the Shinazugawa household, based on my previous story (link here).
Word Count: 3263
Note: This was requested by the lovely @yourlocalangie, “little family moments in the shinazugawa household with the reader and their children.” 🫶🏻
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
A typical day in the Shinazugawa household started very early in the morning. Even before the sun got a chance to go out, Sanemi, his wife and the children would be on their way down the mountain with a cart full of goodies.
Over the years the farm had grown quite a bit.
Mia and her husband had babies and now your chicken coop is full to the brim with lovely birds and delicious eggs for your family and the towns people.
The milk from your farm was considered the hottest item in the market, getting a consistent queue of customers since very early in the morning, creating a high demand.
After an intense morning of sales, the Shinazugawa family heads back to their farm for a well deserved home cooked meal.
The afternoons were particularly busy, since they would all go to the market together, the rest of the work had to be done after lunch.
"Sanehiko, you're on milk duty, make sure they at least fill two of the big jugs."
"On it father." Sanehiko, the eldest of the lot was the most invested in the family business. He learned from his mother from a very young age how to tend the animals and get the milk from the cows, being the best at it in the family. He thoroughly enjoys working on the fields as well, always looking for a way to help with the crops and making sure everything was in order, out of all of them he was the most responsible and down to earth, being the eldest had a big impact in his way of living, much like young Sanemi he is constantly thinking of the wellbeing of his family and does his best to support his parents.
"Genma, you're in charge of picking the best tomatoes to sell tomorrow. Water your mother's herbs when you're done."
"Yes father!" Genma was the sweetest of them all, always wanting to please his mother and father alike. Sanemi was forever jealous at the fact that he was a momma's boy, he reminds him so much of Genya he wishes he would look up to him the way his brother used to do, but his mother is softer and prettier, of course anyone would choose her instead, he would do too.
"Remi, help your mother separate the black from the red berries and put them in the different baskets. If you behave, I might show you the third form." His only daughter was the closest to him, she inherited his spirit and even if she's not even three yet she begs her father to teach her his wind breathing techniques, days he decides to indulge her even the tiniest bit are the happiest around the house.
"(Y/N) you concentrate on the marmalade and watching Senri, I'll take care of the rest there is to do around in the fields and pick up the eggs." reaching over for your husband, you placed a soft kiss to his lips, nodding at his instructions. You were still very much pregnant and doing more than that would be harsh on your body. Patting your bum lovingly, he rolled his sleeves up and headed back to work.
"Mma this!" Remi was diligently following her father's instructions, pulling a berry that wasn’t ripe out and showing it to you in her tiny hand. "Good eye, baby. Let's put those a side ok? We don't want the marmalade to be sour." happily she set it on a plate and continued with her designated job.
No day was the same. Having a farm gave the kids the opportunity to be active and learn from their parents skills that would be useful in the future. Sanemi made sure to rotate them around the tasks, he wanted his children to grow as strong as he was and as smart as their mother, he wanted nothing but the best for them.
By the end of the day they were all tired and ready for bed as early as the sun would set that day.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
Sundays were off. It didn't matter how much work was pending in the farm, how many eggs the chickens lay that morning, how much money they made that week, nothing mattered. Days off were important for the Shinazugawas.
Sanemi didn't get much time to lay around with his youngest since he is always so busy, but Sundays were normally deemed 'Senri day'.
Today though, he had slightly different plans.
You just finished bathing Remi and Senri when you heard Genma squealing like a little piglet.
"Genma get your ass here right now!"
Your husband sounded pissed. He rarely yells at the children, no matter how angry he was.
"Mother!!! Help me!! Father has gone crazy!! MOTHER!!!" his cries for help made you run outside your house, just to see your husband chasing your child around the fields with a sharp knife in his hand.
"Shinazugawa Sanemi. What on earth are you doing?" the child crashed against your leg, hiding behind it. If there was someone who could save him, that would be you.
"Tch." he was forced to stop running by your deep angry mother glare, "I just wanted to give him a haircut, love. Don't know why he's running away like a freak. Did you see him run? How is he faster than me? He's five, this makes no sense."
The four Shinazugawa children took after their father in their physical strengths. Sanehiko could lift a grown pig up since he was four. Genma had super speed, apparently. Remi had his blood thirst and Senri broke Sanehiko's finger when he was just three months old.
You brought Genma up into your arms, looking into his terrified eyes. "What's wrong, baby? Why aren't you letting your father cut your hair? You can't even see of how long it is."
"He....wanted to shave the sides of my head...." the child buried his face on your chest seeking for comfort, this always irritated Sanemi. He understands he is still young and that’s completely normal, but nobody but him and maybe Senri should be allowed to do that. Being jealous of his own children was a new low for the pillar.
"Stop being such a cry baby. I will do it whether you want it or not, I'm your father I do whatever the hell I want."
"Seems like you enjoyed sleeping out by the kitchen, darling." all trace of color drained from Sanemi's face instantly.
"B-babe....let's talk this out, ok? I just wanted to give him a haircut, you know he needs one." and he did, but you didn't like the way he was speaking to the child.
"Why are you shaving his head though? He looks so cute with his long hair." you were peppering soft kisses all over his little face, making him giggle.
By now Sanemi was sitting on the floor beside you, heaving out a long defeated sigh. "My brother...he had his hair like that. I guess I miss him."
"Oh my love...." setting your child down, you embraced your crestfallen husband, kissing the side of his face. "I know you see your brother in Genma, but you gotta remember he's your son and he is just five. Running after him with a knife in your hand isn't considered bonding."
"Father. It’s ok, you can shave my head. I don't like that sad face you're making." he brought Genma into a strong embrace and you all remained like that for a while. He missed Genya dearly, but having you around was more than he deserved.
"Remi too, Remi too!!!" your little girl jumped on Sanemi's back, nuzzling his neck with her little nose.
Sanehiko was holding Senri, confused by the knot of people before him. "What's going on?"
"Just come here, dammit." he settled for leaving Senri in your arms and gently nestle himself on your side, one of his hands holding one of his father's.
The Shinazugawa household was warm and full of understanding.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
After a well deserved break, your husband was now getting into your shared futon ready for a good night sleep.
He loved caressing your enlarged belly, there was nothing he enjoyed more than seeing you carrying his babies, knowing you had a part of him inside of you. He would always fall asleep while tracing patterns on your tummy, face pressed on the side of your neck.
Maybe it was the emotional afternoon your family had, maybe it was the long walk up the hill from the day before. The reason was unknown to you but a sharp pain on your lower half alerted your sleepy husband.
“(Y/N) what’s wrong?”
“Is coming Nemi.” as if on cue, your water broke all over your freshly laundered covers.
“What do you mean is coming? Isn’t it too early? Fuck, what do we do now? Can you wait until I go call the midwife?” he already knew the answer to that question, your body was moving on its own into a good position to deliver the baby.
“Can’t do. We gotta do this on our own, I’ve done it four times already and you’ve been there for every single one of them, we know what to do.”
“Are you out of your fucking mind (Y/N)? What if there’s complications? Senri gave you a hard time.” he was panicking now, removing the covers completely to give you more space, “Hell, you haven’t even finished waving the basket, where is the baby going to sleep?”
“SANEHIKO.” the contractions were heavy, painful, one right after the other, you needed a cool headed person around while your husband hyperventilated in a corner of the room.
“Yes, mother?” the child had already gone to bed, but was still awake thankfully, coming to your aid instantly.
“The baby is coming my love, you know what to do right?” the child nodded making his way over to the kitchen, returning not long after with clean cloths and water.
“Take Senri, we need his basket. Remember, don’t come out of the room until I go look for you, no matter what you hear. This goes for the rest of the gang too, keep an eye on all of them.” Sanemi’s anxiety driven self was finally grasping reality, just in time.
It was now just the two of you in your room. The same room you and your brother were born in, the same room where your four children came to this world. “We can do this, love.” Sanemi held your hand as tight as he could getting in between your legs as you started pushing your fifth child out. Thankfully there were no complications, the child came out fast and with minimal effort, more than ready to come out and meet her family.
Sanemi was ecstatic when he saw his baby girl for the first time as the adrenaline rush was finally settling down. He somehow thought he’d have another boy; it was a pleasant surprise. He was so into it that even forgot he had to clip the cord, almost dragging you out with him when he pulled the baby close to his chest. She looked just like you, his beautiful little treasure.
After cleaning you and the baby, Sanemi set the child on his son’s basket, wrapped into a little cocoon where she slept peacefully tired of the whole adventure.
“How are you feeling, baby? You did such a good job. You’re a pro at this now you have my respect I could never do that, specially not now that I saw it so up close, that shit's not for the weak. I knew I picked the right wife.” this made you giggle, pulling your husband in for cuddles. You probably needed space but all you wanted was to be in his arms.
“I feel less heavy. A bit sore though.” he was rubbing circles onto the side of your hip trying his best to relieve the pain even if it was just a little.
“Do you want me to call the kids in? I can take Sae to them so you can rest some more.”
“Yeah, I don’t think I can handle Remi jumping on me right now.” you both chuckled, staring dreamily into each other’s eyes.
The children were overwhelmed with how cute their little sister was, Genma was particularly over the moon as he wasn’t the only one with dark hair any longer.
Sanemi explained to the kids that their mother needed to rest just like when Senri was born, they needed to behave, be gentle and stay out of troubles. But even after his father’s speech, Genma managed to sneak out of the room quietly and was now kneeling by your side.
“Mother, is your belly ok? Do you need belly rubs?” his sweet little voice was music to your ears, his gentle nature was truly a gift.
“I would love that, sweetie. But does your father know you’re here?” the child swallowed hard seemingly nervous but opted for ignoring the question and go straight to work, gently massaging your sore belly. “I will go to bed in a bit, just thought you might need belly rubs.” he looked like a little delinquent now that his father styled his hair with such a fashion forward design, it was the cutest thing in this world.
“Thank you, baby. You’re the best.” sitting up slightly, you gave your toddler a good night kiss, sending him his way before anyone noticed.
Sanemi noticed of course, but he didn’t say anything, he knew his son, he was probably just making sure his mother was still alive after the deafening screams heard all over the house during the birthing process.
He took Sae back to your room, leaving Senri to share his eldest brother bedding arrangements for the night to give you some extra time to finish the second basket the next day.
Finally going back to your side, Sanemi nearly collapsed on top of you, proud of the evening accomplishments but as tired as one can be, it never even crossed his mind he would help deliver his own child, it was an insane experience. “So how does it feel being the father of five children?” teasing your man was fun, especially when he was this tired, he gets way softer.
“Makes me want to put another one inside of that delicious looking-“
“SANEMI!” he bursts out laughing, burying his face on your hair.
“Just saying... Feels pretty good though. You know I come from a very large family, it feels great having all this tiny loud brats running around, makes me feel complete. You’ve given me so much…”
You were dozing off on his chest, placing a kiss on it before closing your eyes, “I would give you the world, my love.”
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
Being a parent to five children was not easy.
The age gap wasn’t as helpful now a days. When Genma was born Sanehiko was already old enough to understand what was happening. But having three children in a row was taking a toll both physically and mentally on you and your husband.
Remi was difficult to handle, always so full of energy. Senri was still just a little baby but was currently learning how to walk on his own, accidents following his every step. And Sae was milking the life out of you, her appetite was like no other.
You were tired and so was Sanemi.
Even the market stall had to go on a little break, this didn’t happen when Senri was born. He’s always been a quiet baby, would sleep most of his day. But Sae was always hungry and would constantly ask to be fed.
Sanehiko was deemed Senri’s guardian, while Sanemi held onto Remi for dear life majority of the day. The farm still needed to be tended to and you would have to go back to the market soon or the goods would be lost. Genma was tasked as your moral support or how Sanemi liked to call it ‘your servant’, he was in charge of making sure his mother had everything she needed, so he would go on fluffing your pillow every few minutes, bring you water, rub your belly, help you hold his sister while you changed her. He was a big help regardless of what the others said.
“Nii-nii look.” Remi would run over to the house to show her brother the vegetables she picked, the bugs she found, she even brought an egg, her hair littered with feathers making you giggle at the mental image of your husband trying to catch his daughter and chase her out of the coop. She’s always been given easy tasks as she’s still very little, but she was now helping her father with the farm, it made her feel important.
Genma knew she was taunting him, but he was where he wanted to be, there was nothing he’d rather do than to help his mother and new sister to be comfortable and well, he was a man now, the Shinazugawa are strong, he got this under control.
You were dozing off while feeding your daughter, Genma already snoozing on your lap, when you heard tiny feet running in your direction. You could see Remi on Sanemi’s shoulders picking corn in the fields from the window, this could only mean one thing.
“Senri, is that you?” a tiny hand was holding onto the doorframe, supporting his own weight. His brother was supposed to be watching him, but your children all take after their father, you knew Sanehiko wasn’t at fault, it was most likely Senri who sneaked out.
“Come here, my love.” he lets go of the door stumbling clumsily into your arms, “Did you miss me? I sure miss you, my baby boy. It's time for your nap, isn’t it?” he was climbing onto you, stepping on Genma’s hand in the process but very diligently skipping over his newborn sister as if afraid of hurting her.
In under a minute, you could hear your restless son lifting things around the house, scrambling in fear. “Sanehiko, he’s here baby.” a tuft of white hair was now peaking from outside the window, he didn’t want his parents to notice he lost a brother but got caught regardless. He was panting, face covered in sweat, “He disappeared so quickly mother, I swear I just looked to the side for a second and he was gone.”
“I know sweetie, I know. Why don’t you come here and rest with us for a while? We all need a nap.” That was a tempting offering, he was tired that was a fact. Having to look after his little brother, while being constantly awoken at night by a crying baby was a bit too much for a nine-year-old. He nestled on your side, giving you some extra support on the arm that was holding your daughter. Quickly falling asleep like the rest of the gang, face comfortably pressed on your shoulder.
Sanemi had picked up some of your lavender for tea, hopefully that would get you to sleep better. He was about to announce his plan when he saw more than half of his family sprawled on the floor, enjoying an afternoon nap, the sun beams coming through the window were shinning on the beautiful face of his darling wife the love of his life, and his offspring.
His youngest toddler was dozing off on his head, her arms now dangling to the sides of his face. Seems like everyone had the same idea.
He put her down on her eldest brother lap, and she curled on your side immediately, holding Sanehiko’s arm like a pillow. Sanemi went on your other side, cradling you, Genma, and Senri to his chest, letting out a content sigh out and kissing your forehead softly trying not to wake you up.
His life could be chaotic and had been quite challenging over the years, but once he found his happy place, he wouldn’t trade it for anything in this universe, and that was you.

There were years when Sylenn Ancunin was a warrior.
She was a fighter, one of the many protectors of Evereska.
There were years when she was a scholar, diving deep into the secrets of elven history.
There were years when she was a mother and a wife – but those decades disappeared into oblivion, a true curse of elven existence.
It’s all gone.
Her first child –  a girl –  died when orcs ambushed one of the elven towns. Sylenn was still young and the very idea she could overlive her own children sounded unreal. They were elves, not humans! Their children didn’t die unless mortal danger came for them.
But orcs smashed Sylenn Ancunin’s baby daughter against the wall and the elf would forever remember how she held a lifeless body whose every bone had been broken into tiny pieces.
She got pregnant again – sixty years later. Her husband and Thiramin assured Sylenn everything would be fine. Everything… But three human mages killed him, and her sorrow caused Sylenn to miscarriage. Another rare thing for Tel'Quessir. Still weak and bleeding, she put her heavy armor on and avenged them both, slaughtering the cursed wizards like livestock.
Then, she buried her Thiramin and returned to Evereska, to her home, where at last she was among her own kind.
A century passed, slow and peaceful. She married again – never did she love Caeldrim as much as she did her Thiramin. But he was a good friend and partner, and Sylenn was happy by his side.
The only thing she truly wanted back then was to conceive a child. She wanted to become a mother, she wanted this gift she had been deprived of twice.
Sylenn prayed to all of the elven gods. Corellon, Hanali, Sehanine, Naralis…Each of them.
Until one day, instead of a reverie, she had a dream. A silhouette weaved of light placed a small star in her hands.
The gods gave her a child.
… Now, centuries later, Sylenn fears and waits for those memories when she reveries. The moment the healer placed a newborn boy in her hands.
Astarion. Her little star.
He was born with curled silver hair and when he was a child he resembled a dandelion. Sylenn remembers Astarion was a crybaby, always demanding her attention. He wanted his mother to hold him, to carry him around their house. And, should he have a nightmare or some ghostly shadows of his past lives haunted him, he came straight to her, eyes puffy, lips quivering. Sylenn would lull him back to sleep but rarely carried him back to bed.
The boy had the temper of a human, and Caeldrim joked that some of their ancestors must have bedded a N Tel'Quessir. Sylenn’s son was smart and brave, and if she couldn’t find him anywhere, it meant he was in a library – learning new things, new languages, new facts.
Or he could have been in the hills, if the sun shone brightly. Caeldrim’s mother called her grandson Sunflower – for he sometimes would spend hours just standing in the sun enjoying its warmth.
Sylenn taught Astarion to fight. A longsword. Daggers. All possible weapons. She often took him outside Evereska to show him the world behind the elven realm.
It fascinated him.
Sylenn knew Astarion would leave to see the world soon enough. When she would see him again, he would be an adult – and she wished his childhood would last just a little longer.
It didn’t.
Her baby boy grew up. A beautiful elf whose eyes were green like the hills of Evereska and whose hair was the color of moonlight.
There is another memory Sylenn is afraid to re-live.
The last time she saw Astarion.
He was twenty-four. Fully-grown. Handsome and beautiful, taller than other elves, with hands almost as strong as a human’s.
Astarion was standing in front of her in his traveling armor and Sylenn couldn’t take her eyes off him.
“I will be fine, o’si,” he told her. “Besides, you taught me so well, I could put up with a devil in a fight!”
“Don’t be stupid, Astarion” she tiptoed and kissed his forehead. “Pity, I didn’t finish the circlet I wanted to give you.” She pointed at the unfinished twisted rope-like headwear adorned with a little star.
“You can finish it by the time I get my adult name.” Astarion kissed her cheek.
And he left. Sometimes in her reverie, Sylenn wants to cry and beg her only son to stay. Besides, not all adult elves leave their homes! Some stay where they were born.
Her Astarion disappeared. That wretched city he went to study murdered him and no one could even tell her how it happened.
After eighty years of receiving no message from him, Sylenn left Evereska one last time and traveled to the West.
To find her son’s grave.
They even buried him like a human – and Sylenn wanted to dig the grave with her bare hands. Her son didn’t deserve to rot in the ground but all strength left Sylenn and she spent a day curling in the graveyard until a guardian came to check on her and took her to the inn.
With the years, Sylenn accepted what happened. Besides, there are fates much worse than death.
Her son could have been cursed. Or turned into an undead. At least she knows he sleeps peacefully in his grave and maybe if the gods allow she will meet him in their afterlife.
Sylenn Ancunin never returned to Evereska. She came to Neverwinter, found her youth friend, a gnome paladin, and asked him to give her a place in his adventuring guild.
At least dying in battle is better than rotting in her own misery.
**
A reeking scent of death lingers over the cave and Sylenn curses. This part of the dungeon disgusts her, and if it wasn’t for her mission she would have already returned to the surface.
“Well, they told us ‘dead or alive’,” the Dragonborn by her side chuckles and points at a dead human prince whose body is torn in two.
“We need to find the map,” Sylenn sits on a boulder. “I am too old to wear armor.”
“You are not old,” the Dragonborn laughs. “You are what, only a millenia?”
Sylenn cringes. Well, is there any difference between being five hundred years old and a millenia?
“Almost,” Sylenn says. The warrior looks at her with awe – and she knows how she looks in his eyes.
A forever young woman with long silver hair and a pair of emerald green eyes. Delicate and thin but in the full set of heavy armor. Other races in Faerun don’t care how old elves are.
“Let’s set up a camp somewhere it doesn’t stink. And where the fuck is Irbis?”
Sylenn decides she isn’t going to take off her armor. Who knows what killed the prince? And they need the map that leads to the secret dungeons of the Dark Elves. The lord of Gauntlgrym won’t be happy if the party comes back empty-handed – and with his dead son’s body.
“He must have found a whore to spend the night with and forgot about us,” Selynn says. She has never liked Irbis – the human man cares only about ale and gold and would sell all of his companions for a good pact with a devil.
“You have a dirty mouth for an elf,” the Dragonborn notices.
“I’ve been through such shit within my lifetime I have every right to swear like a drunken dwarf.”
Whatever the Dragonborn wants to say next is interrupted by loud steps.
“And who am I supposed to talk to?” A young woman demands and her voice echoes through the cave.
“This one” Irbis answers, letting a stranger approach the corpse.
Sylenn turns her head.
She sees a young woman in a black traveling armor. Her long silver hair, so common for Moon elves, is braided.
“This is Alethaine,” Irbis announces. “She is going to talk to that… body. So good I’ve met a necromancer in these lands!”
Alethaine yawns.
“Good morning.”
“It’s almost sunset,” Sylenn says.
“It’s morning when I wake up,” Alethaine bites her lower lip. “Alae, etriel,” she adds in Elven.
Sylenn meets the necromancer’s eyes and feels a wave of uneasiness.
The girl looks like an elf. Pointy ears, slim and delicate body. But there is something off about her, as if she pretended very hard to look like Tel’Quessira.
But wasn't one.
“Oh, and they say all dragonborns look alike!” the Dragonborn laughs. “Look, Sylenn, you could have been sisters!”
“She looks nothing like me!” Sylenn whispers as quietly as she can. Alethaine’s ear twitches and Sylenn realizes the necromancer can perfectly hear her. “Besides, there is something… strange about her!”
“My mother is half human,” Alethaine says looking at the mutilated corpse. “Maybe, this is what bothers you?”
As if there were such a thing as a pure-blooded elf, Sylenn thinks. No, it’s something else about her that makes the old elf shiver.
“We are so lucky to find someone who can talk to the dead!” Irbis announces. “I entered the tavern, no hope to help the cause and that… that young woman was beating a cleric of Lathander with a book.”
“My dad taught me to beat the shit out of perverts who eye me out,” Alethaine casually says. ‘Hope the bastard has a concussion.”
“I think you broke his spine.”
“Even better!” Alethaine sits beside the corpse looking at the body with such tenderness as if it was a child or a cute animal. “Who is going to ask the questions?”
The Dragonborn pushes Sylenn forward and the warrior approaches. No, the body doesn’t disgust her.
It’s the young elf who scares her.
“Only five questions,” Alethaine says, puts her arm to the dead man’s chest, and mutters a spell. The corpse stirs and its eyes glow green.
Sylenn has witnessed death. But necromancy is so unnatural and disgusting that she hates the very idea of the prince's body being violated this way.
“Where is the map?” Sylenn asks.
The corpse is silent.
“You asked it the wrong way,” Alethaine says.
“Where is the map to the Dark Elves’ lair?”
“They burned it.”
“Fuck. Who?”
“The one who killed us,” the corpse says.
“Who killed you? And where is the lair?!”
“I don’t know.”
Alethaine grabs Sylenn’s hand. “You have one question left!”
“Who killed you?!”
“Shadows.”
And the corpse goes silent.
“Very informative,” Ibris mutters.
“You still have to pay me!” Alethaine says. “Ask better questions next time!”
Sylenn pulls away. Everything is lost. They better run to the town and warn than the Dark Elves will probably try to attack them soon enough…
“Watch out!” Ibris yells.
A shadow detaches itself from the walls and pierces the human with its claws. Blood spills on the stones
Sylenn grabs her sword. The whole place bursts with movement. Shadows, screeching and wailing, surround them. The Dragonborn falls and Sylenn knows he is already dead.
“Oh fuck…” Sylenn mutters.
Alethaine jumps on her feet.
“Do something!” Sylenn yells but the shadows surround Alethaine threatening to destroy the young necromancer with necrotic damage.
But instead…The claws don’t hurt her, as if she was an undead. Alethaine looks pissed and angry as if someone spilled her ale in the tavern. She pushes Sylenn away from the shadows and despite all the heavy armor, the elf feels herself thrown away like a kitten.
“OBEY” Alethaine orders. “BEGONE!”
The shadows curl around her. Sylenn thinks the creatures don’t understand why they can’t hurt the weird woman.
Her eyes glow green.
“I SAID, BEGONE!”
The last thing Sylenn remembers is the shadows running right through her.
**
Sylenn wakes up her head upside down. She notices a narrow pathway below her and also the fact someone is carrying her on their shoulders.
In a full heavy armor set.
“Easy money, easy money,” Alethaine mutters. “You, guys, didn’t even have loot I could scavenge! It seems like these are bad times for adventuring finances, am I right?”
Alethaine carries Sylenn as if she were a child. More than that, her sword and bow were still on her and it seemed like the necromancer couldn’t care less about the weight.
The sun still shines in the skies and Sylenn suppresses the irrational fear the girl is a vampire.
“Since you woke up, etriel, where to go next?”
“I’m Sylenn. Don’t call me etriel, I am not a noble.”
“All right, even better! So, where?”
… Alethaine finds Sylenn’s house when it’s already dark. She opens the door with her leg and the loud slam echoes through the empty streets.
Then, the necromancer gently places the wounded fighter on the bed and stretches like a lazy cat.
“You are wounded,” Alethaine says. “Do you have bandages?”
Sylenn tries to get rid of her armor but can’t. All her body aches and she realizes she has a burning wound on her stomach.
“Stay still,” the necromancer orders and starts to unlace the straps.
“Do you know how to do it?” Sylenn wonders. “Or you only tend the dead?”
“My mother is just like you. Constantly comes home in her armor and it’s just meat and blood under it. I’ve learned to tend wounds at a very early age. Well, she doesn’t wear heavy armor - says it restrains her in a fight”
“So your mother is a berserker?”
“She prefers ‘barbarian’ but yes.”
Sylenn relaxes and allows Alethaine to bandage the wounds. Another wave of fear passes through the elf when she notices how the necromancers lick her lips at the sight of blood”
 “What are you?” Sylenn asks.
“What do you mean?”
“You are not an elf but you look like one. Try to act like one. But you can’t lie to the elves, we know you are not one of us. So, I ask you again, Alethaine, what are you?”
Alethaine sits in the armchair looking straight into Sylenn’s eyes. The girl is so fucking pale she could have been a ghost.
Then she opens her mouth.
“What the…” Sylenn elbows. “Are you a vampire?!”
“I am a dhampir. This is much worse! I once bit my dad’s wrists and the flesh wouldn’t regenerate for a month!” Alethaine smiles. “And it’s a little bit offensive considering I saved you.”
Sylenn lies back on the bed. Dhampirs… Half-dead children of vampires. Sylenn thought they were legends.
But one of them sits in front of her.
“I can leave,” Alethaine says.
“Don’t be ridiculous. Stay. You’ve saved me. Be… my guest.”
**
It’s nice to have someone to talk to. Someone who doesn’t see a five-century-old elven warrior in her. Alethaine speaks in perfect elven and curses like a sailor. Her eyes burn as Sylenn tells her about her own adventures and about elven history. As she concentrates on the stories, her eyes glow red and she bites her right thumb.
By the morning Sylenn finally manages to get into reverie – and this one is bitter again.
Her leg is broken in two and she limps returning home. Hunting has gone wrong and she fell from the hill, snapping her delicate bones.
She mutters curses all the way back and then collapses in the armchair.
Then she realizes she isn’t alone.
Astarion, her Little Star, stands in the center of the room, arms wide open. His eyes are closed and a smile lingers on his pretty face. He is only fourteen and he still retains many of his child features, but Sylenn can already see the adult he is becoming.
He is in the reverie, deep in his own memories – or, maybe, shadows of his past lives. Or ghosts of his future, should he inherit the prophetic gift.
The sun showers his face in its warmth and Sylenn forgets about pain.
Her boy, the gift from the gods.
She just keeps looking at him.
Until the memory fades away.
Sylenn gets up – her wounds are more or less healed. The elf feels dizzy as she goes downstairs.
And sees Alethaine cleaning the set of armor.
“Good morning, Sylenn,” Alethaine bares her fangs. “You’ve slept like a human.”
“You shouldn’t have…”
“No worries, I don’t want to go outside. That dick of a Lathander priest is looking for me anyway. It’s not like I can't run away from a halfling but if I can keep a low profile, I should. Oh…” She looks at Sylenn. “Are you all right?”
Sylenn blinks and realizes she’s been crying. “I… am. Bad memories. And good ones.”
“I can listen if you want,” Alethaine implores.
“How old are you?” Sylenn suddenly asks. “You look rather young for an elf to be on her own.”
“I am twenty-four. I just look… smaller. Because I am a dhampir, you know.”
“Oh, I see… But we rarely let our children go when they are younger than twenty-five. Though, I let mine.”
“I was raised in a human village, and my mother is half a human…And my dad… well, that's a story for another time.”
Sylenn sits down. She rarely talks about her son but for some reason, she feels like she will die if she doesn’t tell her sorrows to that stranger.
“I had a son. Many years ago. He was your age when I let him go and he died fifteen years later. He was my only one. I still see him when I reverie.”
“Oh,” Alethaine says. “I am sorry.”
Both elves are silent. Alethaine looks out the window.
“You know… I sometimes think that if I die, my parents will never know what happened to me. Or they will decades or centuries later.”
Sylenn bitterly smiles. “We elves think we are invincible. But we are not. Death is a rare guest among us, but there is nothing scarier than an elf burying their child. I lost my daughter when she was four, had a miscarriage – and then my son was just killed. Some clerics even thought I was cursed. Though, almost every human has been through the same shit. That corpse you were talking to is the only son of a local ruler. And he will have to bury him.”
Alethaine is silent. Her face resembles a mask and it’s difficult to decipher her emotions.
Then the dhampir stands up and hugs Sylenn burying her face in her chest.
“I am sorry, Sylenn. I am sorry for what has happened to you,” she says and her words are sincere. Sylenn allows tears to flow down her cheeks as she strokes Alethaine’s back.
What are her parents like, Sylenn wonders. Since she is a dhampir, one of them is a vampire. She mentioned her mother, a warrior like Sylenn. But about her father? Do vampires raise their children? Anyway, whoever was responsible for Alethaine’s upbringing did a good job. A necromancer and a dhampir, she saved Sylenn, tended her wounds, and listened to her.
Sylenn makes a mental note to mention Alethaine in her prayers next time. May her parents never have to go through what Sylenn did.
“Well, I suppose I need to flee the town,” Alethaine smiles. “I think I should go to Waterdeep. I can easily mingle with the local weirdos!”
“Thank you, Alethaine,” Sylenn smiles. “I am sorry for being rude”.
“I got used to elves staring at me as if I were a doppelganger.”
“I-I don’t have money to pay you,” Sylenn gets up. “But I want to.”
Sylenn goes to the basement. Turns off the protecting sigils and takes a small chest out of its hiding place.
“I want to give you something,” Sylenn returns to the room. She places the chest on the table and opens it.  “When my son said he would leave me with the first snow, I decided to make him a parting gift” Sylenn takes out a circlet. “But I was no artisan and I didn’t finish it. I was supposed to give it to him when he would return to receive his adult name…”
“But he never did,” Alethaine finishes.
“I finished the circlet anyway but I had no one to give it to. I don’t have children, I will never have grandsons and granddaughters. And this thing just lies here reminding me of what I’ve lost.”
Sylenn takes the precious circlet and crowns Alethaine’s head. The circlet fits her perfectly and suits her hair. The small star is placed in the center of her forehead.
“You can’t give it to me,” Alethaine mutters.
“I can. Take it. It’s yours. Things are made to be used. You are a beautiful young woman, wear it. Besides, I don’t think you’ve had a lot of elven adornments.”
Alethaine looks at the mirror and smiles baring her fangs. Sylenn chuckles: maybe this one is half-dead and a necromancer, but a girl is a girl.
“Thank you, Sylenn.”
“But don’t you dare sell it. If you do, I will find you,” Sylenn threatens.
“I wouldn't even think about it!”
Sylenn hugs Alethaine again. “Uluvathae, Alethaine.”
“Uluvathae, Sylenn.”
Alethaine goes outside and soon disappears in the dark.
Sylenn is alone again. Suddenly, she feels like pieces of her sadness have gone, as if Alethaine somehow took them away. Well, Sylenn isn’t old – she has centuries of life ahead.
Maybe it’s too early to bury herself.
She is going back to Evereska. Her husband, Caeldrim must have died already, he was much older than her – so she needs to pay respects to him. And then… Then she will decide what to do next.
**
Sylenn has the next reverie on the road to the east. She hopes it will be something neutral, something that won’t harm her soul but the memories are merciless to the elf.
Sylenn enters the library. Her mind is preoccupied with the news about Yuan-ti’s attacks on the elven settlements. Fucking serpents need to learn Tel'Quessir had been here before them and will stay when the snake become ashes.
“Thinking of the snakes again, o’si?” Astarion asks.
He is nineteen, still an adolescent, not an adult. He reads a book on human laws and customs and bites his right thumb as it helps him to concentrate.
“Is there something about them in these books of yours?”
“No. Did you know that humans have so many laws about inheritance and burial?” Astarion flips the page. “Listen!”
Sylenn tries not to show that those things sound boring to her. History, that’s where her interests lie. But Astarion is so enchanted with all these articles and small details and many differences between the tribes and cities of humans that she listens.
At least, she can reverie to hear his voice again.
Sylenn wakes up crying again. She looks at the starry sky and sniffs.
Weird, she later thinks that the necromancer, Alethaine, was biting her right thumb the same way Astarion did centuries ago.

Idk why but I love the idea of Willy with someone who works for the NHL at the Toronto HQ like maybe not in the media team but part of their global marketing division, and they have a great connection because she works with the Swedish office so often and they’ve created a great friendship outside of hockey but as she’s such a high power human and that would be an HR disaster they keep it at a distance. But everyone knows they need to bang so at a holiday party they get caught under the mistletoe together (caught meaning Auston following them around holding it above their heads like an idiot wingman, but also they’re glued to each others sides so they don’t make it easy on themselves) and the Maple Leaf lads aren’t going to let them get away without finally making a move, mostly because they’re tired of Willy’s pining!
Alrighty babe, I mist admit that I wasn't entirely sure where I was going with this 😅 But, I do hope that it caught just parts of what you'd imagined ❤️ otherwise, as always just hit me up 😉

Don't mix business with pleasure
Tumblr media
"Come on, Willy, just sleep with her already," Mitch's voice rang out in the locker room as the team prepped for practice. “I mean, you've only been into her for like six months already…”
William couldn't help but chuckle at his teammate's blunt comment, even though there was perhaps some truth in it.
"I can't just sleep with her... you know where she works, right?" William responded; a bit hesitant as he adjusted his hockey gear.
"Yeah, she's got a high-up job, but seriously, you two have been ogling each other since she first talked to you about Sweden," Mitch explained, letting it be known that the whole team was aware of the chemistry between you and their teammate.
Working at the Toronto HQ had been a huge achievement in your career, especially at your age in your mid-twenties. The promotion was a result of hard work and dedication, a significant step forward that you had relentlessly pursued.
And it was only a few weeks into your new position when you’d first encountered the Swedish forward, William Nylander. You and your team had invited all the Swedish players in for a meeting, as you were preparing for the up for the upcoming global series event set to happen in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden.
Being part of the global marketing team, you were tasked with managing the event schedule for this huge event, knowing that the Swedes, especially William, would be very much under the spotlight. He wasn't just a star player for the Leafs but also a familiar face in what he considered his home country -Sweden. And right from that moment, an immediate connection sparked between the two of you.
Sure, your professional responsibilities demanded commitment, but amid the discussions in the meeting rooms and event arrangements, there was an unspoken bond in the air - a mutual understanding that went beyond regular work interactions.
William's gaze was fixed on you from the start, as he quickly noticed your voice, gentle and warm, filling the room, a comforting tune to his ears, and your captivating smile and evident passion for your work were magnetic.
You were incredibly smart, and the way you weren’t afraid of speaking your mind, and man-handle those around you who gave you nothing but hell, merely because you were younger than them, had him all intrigued.
And he knew he had to at least try and be around you for more than just a few meetings.
So, days slowly turned into shared moments – casual coffees during breaks, filled with laughter, genuine talks about life beyond the sports arena, and a mutual admiration for each other's dedication to your careers. Yet, underneath this professional facade, there lingered an undeniable tension; an unexpressed longing held back by the responsibilities of professionalism.
You tried to keep things innocent, staying at arm's length and keeping a cool, business-like attitude. But his charm, laughter, and jokes easily cut through the formal work setup, reaching a deeper part of you.
Especially during the Global tour, when you, alongside all the coordinators and Swedes across the NHL-teams, Red Wings, Wilds, and Senators, spent endless hours together sorting schedules, doing interviews, signing autographs, and handling whatever else cropped up.
It became increasingly harder to stay far away from the lad from Stockholm. Yet, both of you knew you had to deal with this undeniable chemistry, sidestepping unspoken feelings that came up whenever you were together.
And perhaps you were a little bit better at it than William.
"Planning to root for us?" he teased during a discussion about the team’s marketing plans.
"Willy, you know I can’t take sides like that; I'm part of the NHL, remember," you replied with a sweet smile.
"Fair enough, but I wouldn't mind hearing you cheering my name one day... supporting the Leafs," he almost whispered, making sure not to make it too obvious to everyone around that your relationship was slowly becoming more than just colleagues. Perhaps even closer than just friends.
But you brushed it off, keeping your attention on your tasks at hand.
Meanwhile, the Maple Leaf lads, always keeping an eye out, couldn't resist teasing and joking around, fully aware of the growing attraction between you and William.
"Looks like someone's aiming high up there," Auston teased William as soon as he’d returned to the group. "So, that's why you're always hanging around, 'assisting' whenever the big boys are here."
"She's not involved in any of that," William defended with a chuckle.
And it did hold some truth to it.
However, he couldn't deny the way you looked in your stylish vintage suit-pants, your hair nearly flawlessly styled, and your makeup enhancing your natural beauty. It occupied too much space in his hockey-focused mind.
Thoughts of your figure lingered in his thoughts, and every time there was a game either at the Scotiabank Arena or elsewhere, he'd search for you in the crowd.
**
As the holiday season drew near, the team's cheerful vibe set the stage for playful banter and, not to forget, the big company Christmas party in Toronto, where the entire headquarters received invites, including the Toronto Maple Leafs players and management.
And amid the festive ambience, the players were casually dressed in their best business casual attire, chatting and mingling, across management levels and occupations.
However, it was Auston's smug look that caught William's attention, prompting him to swiftly turn his head, when you entered the venue.
Your semi-long red dress hugged your figure snugly, and your legs looked elongated by your tall heels, as a blazer draped over your shoulders, and you held a clutch close to your side.
"Hey, Willy, I think you dropped something," Morgan teased as the blonde Swede couldn't take his eyes off you from a distance.
"What?" William questioned.
"Your jaw," the defenseman jested, prompting chuckles from the rest of the guys.
William did his best to shrug off his teammates' playful remarks with laughter, but his gaze remained fixed on you.
And a few moments later, as you picked up a delightful glass of champagne, your eyes met his as well.
It was a tender moment as your eyes locked from across the room, and the atmosphere seemed to grow a bit more intense. You almost sensed his presence, feeling as if his breath was upon you, as the two of you stood almost motionless, the background noise gently fading away.
But then you shook your head, needing to break the intense moment and return to reality as Shannon Hosford's lively storytelling filled the room.
"I swear you have to make a move tonight," Auston chuckled, noticing the not-so-subtle shared moment.
"I wish…" William murmured softly, a faint smirk touching his lips. "Maybe there'll be a Christmas miracle," he chuckled lightly before turning his focus back to his friends.
And that idea sparked something in Auston's mind.
A Christmas miracle—or perhaps just a gentle nudge in the right direction.
As the night progressed, Cynthia Devine delivered a heartfelt speech, followed by Brendan Shanahan, and then a delightful three-course meal. You found yourself engrossed in amusing conversations with the Toronto Maple Leafs' staff. Given your recent close work with them, striking up casual chats felt almost second nature.
Then during the pivotal speech delivered by the NHL Toronto HQ president, William decided to make a move, as he sensed your efforts to keep a distance from him throughout the evening, yet he also felt that it wasn't truly what you desired.
So, as everyone stood, their attention fixed on the stage in the beautiful venue, William moved closer to you, positioning himself right by your side, his shoulder gently brushing against yours. You glanced slightly in his direction, catching a glimpse of his handsome features, before turning back to face the stage, a faint smile playing on your lips.
Just his close presence alone made you feel a sense of warmth.
Then something more tangible occurred.
William delicately and slowly nudged his right hand against your left, which hung by your side, and he lightly traced his fingers against yours, attempting to interlace two of his fingers with your palm, gently wrapping them around your little and ring finger.
Initially, your heart skipped a beat. You knew his touch was almost innocent, yet if anyone from the headquarters spotted you intertwining fingers with an NHL hockey player, HR would undoubtedly raise concerns. It would be deemed a violation of regulations and considered highly unprofessional.
But you found it hard to resist.
Gradually, you relaxed your tensed posture, allowing your arm to hang freely, permitting William's fingers to intertwine further with yours.
However, your actions didn’t go unnoticed.
As Auston saw the subtle finger play between you and William, he was quick to make his move. However, just as he was about to execute his plan, the speech concluded, prompting both you and William to swiftly pull your hands apart and join in the applause with the rest of the crowd.
The room filled with loud sounds as the clapping continued for what seemed like minutes, but it was minutes you relished simply standing next to the tall Swede. Then, as the applause gradually faded and the crowd dispersed from the floor, you took the chance to steal another glance at William. But you weren't alone.
Auston was nearby, and with a smooth move, he produced a small green plant from behind his back. Looking innocent, he whistled and casually raised his hand, looking in a different direction as he held the mistletoe just above your heads.
Both you and William couldn't help but chuckle at Auston's not-so-subtle attempt at matchmaking. Yet, there was an understanding that perhaps engaging in intimate contact with William under the guise of mistletoe tradition might make it more acceptable. Your eyes met his once more.
William immediately caught on and subtly moved a bit closer to you, if that was even possible.
It felt like an unspoken agreement. Both of you knew what you desired most in that very moment. However, the moment was interrupted naturally by a colleague calling you over, and once again, you had to separate.
Both Auston and William let out deep sighs, feeling the missed opportunity keenly. So close, yet so far.
Fortunately, no more than an hour passed before another opportunity arose. And this time, Auston was determined to have your lips connected with William's.
The dance floor was packed with guests, music blaring through the speakers, as you had just grabbed another drink from the bar when William approached you gently.
"Not sure if it's appropriate," he softly chuckled. "But you look absolutely amazing tonight."
His attempt to remain polite and professional, while also being charming and flirtatious, amused you. And you couldn’t deny that there was a part of you that simply wanted to give in to the temptation.
Glancing around and spotting none of your managers or colleagues, you leaned in with a confident, teasing expression.
"Only tonight?" you teased back, earning a light chuckle from William.
"I think we both know I think you always look amazing," he corrected himself with a laugh.
And once again, you both felt the tender moment burgeoning between you, as Auston slowly made his way closer.
And again, he took out the little green plant, holding it just above your heads casually, prompting more light chuckles. But this time, you and William silently agreed that it was happening.
As you took a deep breath, fully aware of the countless regulations about to be crossed, you leaned in towards him, meeting his touch halfway as he slowly inclined to let his lips meet yours.
His hands found the curves of your hips as you placed yours on his muscular upper arms, softly leaning into the kiss.
The moment was absolutely perfect.
William's lips felt just right against yours, his closeness feeling wonderful, and the shared breaths creating a heartfelt connection. Your heart quickened, and excitement surged through you with the intensity of the kiss.
But as much as both of you desired for it to last longer, you knew you had to pull away to avoid drawing too much attention.
So, reluctantly, you let out a breath, took a small step back, and willed your heart to calm down, mentally processing the rush the kiss had brought.
Even after parting, amid exclamations and chuckles from the players, the sensation of William's lips lingering on yours remained.
But you knew it couldn't continue, and so you made a painful decision and began to walk away. Heading straight towards the ladies’ room, conflicting emotions clashed with rational thoughts in your head.
And just as you were about to reach for the door handle, William's hand grabbed yours and turned you around, pulling you close to him.
"Willy," you exhaled, slightly bewildered by his sudden action. "Please, we can't…"
"I know, but..." His voice softened as he pondered how to articulate his thoughts. "I know we can't be together, not now and maybe not ever... but I need you to know, no matter what happens, my heart belongs to you."
His words were tender and filled with emotion, conveying a depth of sincerity that struck a chord within you.
And attempting to respond while standing close together in the hallway, grateful that no one interrupted your private moment, you began, "Willy..."
"You don't have to explain - I understand it's your career, and I don't want to jeopardize it - but I just needed you to know how I feel; otherwise, I'd regret it for the rest of my life."
Slowly untangling himself from your proximity, he then started to walk away. However, you couldn't let him leave like this.
After his heartfelt confession, even though circumstances seemed against you, you couldn't let him go without a response. Determinedly, you strode towards him.
"Willy," you called out loudly, causing him to turn around and face you again, just as you leaned in to connect your lips briefly once more.
"Just so you know, I'm not saying never."
A small smile graced the hockey player's face as he let out a relieved sigh, your words simply reassuring him that what was happening between you wasn't entirely off the table for the future.

thanks @orchidscript @alrightbuckaroo @heartstringsduet @tellmegoodbye @tailoredshirt @paperstorm @carlos-in-glasses !! (you’re all in the queue!)
September 28, 1622
Today was nothing of note. I often wonder why I write on these days when there are so many more interesting ones for you to read about when you return. But if you were here, you would tell me that you would want to know about even my most monotonous days, so for you, I will fill another page of this journal. I have already filled so many. Good thing you like to read.
I did not sell as many apples today as I had hoped. Thankfully, the eggs are doing well. I wonder if we should invest in another hen while demand is high. I wish you were here to make these decisions with me.
I ran into Paul at the market. I told myself if there is another production soon for me to join, I will do it. He did not have good news for me today. Perhaps tomorrow will be different.
Money is tight right now, but I do not want you to worry. Not that you will know, anyway. Some days I worry about what happens when winter comes, but for now I am doing okay. Me and Buttercup and Poppy are getting by. I cannot wait for you to meet Buttercup. I think you will love him.
Poppy misses you—not as much as I do—but she always trots a bit faster when we approach the harbor. She’s a smart girl, I think she knows that is where you will return to us. I’ve been feeding her one of the best apples from each day’s pick. I know you would not mind.
I watched a ship come into the harbor today. Many people around me had joyous reunions. I try to feel happy for them. Oftentimes I feel envious. One day that will be us, though maybe our home would be better suited for a reunion. I long to kiss you again.
I am in our bed now. Your side. It is hard not to think about where you are. I hope you are okay, that you are getting some sleep. I know it must be difficult. Think of how good we will sleep when we are together again. I think about what many things will be like when we are together again. There is not enough room on this page to write it all down. For now, I will keep these thoughts in my head until I can share them with you in person. They are closest to me there. I want to keep you as close to me as I can.
All my love,
TK

Heyy
Do you have any advice on starting a real estate business as in just buying and renting out property?
Thanks 🤍
Yes!
**For the record, I have personally done a few flips/rehabs. Apart from that, I knew/know most of the realtors in this city and relating companies as I worked with most real estate/mortgage and title companies here when I had an agency.
First you need to be able to learn the market and research comparables. When looking to buy properties there are important factors to consider to make sure you are not paying overprice for a property as well as that the are is on demand, ensuring it will be easier to rent out the property.
The location of the property and its proximity to amenities like schools, shopping centers, grocery stores, transportation etc. Also that the area is safe.
You also want to look for areas that has future development plans, this will raise the value of your property.
If you have worked with investment companies, you will quickly learn that buying a property that is not in the best condition, a rehab property, could be a very smart play. You want to make sure of course to check the comparables and ensure that the property is underpriced compared to the other homes in the area. Once you rehab the property, it could raise or even surpass the value of the other homes in the area.
Any home that you would look into to buy for renting out should have elements that you intend to upgrade on. There are a lot of reasons for this but the most important one is how it raises your price and potential earnings. Redoing a kitchen or a bathroom can immediately raise the value of your home anywhere from 5-50k. A project that will cost you anywhere from 3-10k on average for a standards nice kitchen depending on your area.
Overall you still want to look at the comps to make sure you are getting a fair deal. Calculate the potential annual rent as a percentage of the properties price. This will give you an idea of the return on your investment. Also make sure that the potential rental income exceeds the monthly expenses. If not it does not make sense.
Check the vacancy rates in the area you want to purchase in, if its high there may be a low demand and not a good area to invest in.
Also you want to think about how easy it would be to sell the property if you need to. In demand areas tend to be more liquid.
So important, to understand the landlord/ tenant laws in your state. Including their rights and eviction process etc. Nothing worst than having a horrible tenant and not being legally able to remove them.
There are a lot of rate plans depending on your specific situation and mortgage rates also vary significantly by state. Make sure to get the best deal for you. Some states a first time can give as little as 1-5% down depending if you are a first time/ entrepreneur etc.
Property insurance is another cost factor to consider when working out your numbers as this varies by area.
Managing a few properties on your own is easy, but after a handful, you may want to consider hiring a property management company to handle these things for you.
I would strongly urge you to get a lawyer to draw up renter contracts.
To grow this business what you want to do, and this is a general overview: down payment for house, fix, rent out, refinance, use refinance to purchase another property and have enough to put into upgrades/repairs on the second purchase and repeat.
I can get into taxes on this too if you want.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The next morning you were indeed awoken a little before dawn.
Anne had been there in the garden with you to point out which flowers often sold best at the market.
After that she had handed you a knife, that looked quite dull, to cut the flowers.
What had sounded like an easy task was made tedious by the dull blade.
Dammit.
The only joy was seeing how beautiful the flowers truly were, they sure did spend much effort on growing them like this.
The roses smelled amazing, the colors were vibrant. A much nicer red than what you had spend your weeks around. Flower after flower was placed in the basket you had received to use.
Countless times you ended up hurting your hands and arms on the thorns of the roses.
Still you and some of the others Sisters, including Anne, went to the market with a full basket of flowers to sell that afternoon.
One Sister, Lily, barely dared to speak to people and hoped they would just give coins, take the flowers and go.
Another, Sister Bernadeth, was quite successful in ‘persuading’ people into buying a flower. And by persuading, it meant that she reminded them that God was watching them, it sounded like a very polite form of blackmail.
Anne waited and tried to either spot the richer people or those walking with their spouses.
You just approached everyone in sight and let them smell the flowers. It proved an effective team effort and as evening fell all flowers were sold.
And that was how your days were spend. They sure were productive, but not very exciting.
Two weeks passed. Two full weeks and no visit or even a word from Lancelot.
Was it because of your uncle? Had he changed his mind?
The mark was still on your arm, often you could feel it ache or tingle. Did it mean that he had not broken the connection between you?
It would be unwise to try and send a letter, your uncle would surely intercept it long before it could reach him. Perhaps it would have been smart to discuss ways of communication with him before coming here…
As a means to distract yourself, you had begun to look for ways to earn a living and never expected to be able to do so by knitting.
But scarfs and other clothing items were in demand during these rough times.
It earned you enough to start saving up for a better future on your own, the Abbess and other nuns responded positively to your efforts.
You knitted them socks as a gift, and form of practice, for the coming winter in return. This place truly was better than the monastery.
After a day of helping in the kitchens, you had been quick to fall asleep the second your head touched the pillow. Who knew cooking could be that tiring?
In the middle of the night, you awoke in pain. Your arm hurt like it had been struck by something sharp. As quick as the pain had begun, it vanished again.
The silver markings had become visible, yet they were not as bright as they had once been.
It felt more like a nightmare than a reality.
Had it just been a dream? Was it just the mark responding to it?
An hour passed, the marks remained and you found yourself looking at them for quite some time.
They made you think of him, heaven you missed that smug twit…
It took a while to fall back asleep and even when your eyes fell shut again, the marks did not vanish.
The next night something strange happened. You knew you were in a dream when you found yourself standing in a forest near a river. Weeping willows grew together with ash trees, the place had only a slight amount of sunlight that passed between the branches and touched the grass.
No one was in sight and still you could feel a presence, it made you turn around.
Crimson slowly began to rain down from the willows, the bark of the ash trees began to bleed.
Whispers came from all around, you walked over to one of the ash trees and placed your palm against it.
Immediately the mark responded to it, the silver pattern began to bleed.
The pain returned more intense than it had been previously.
You were bleeding…
The ash trees were bleeding…
The Weeping willows…
Lancelot…
This was a message.
Something was wrong.
You woke up in a sweat and pulled your sleeve up, the pain was gone again and the marks had returned to their silver lingering state.
Something was wrong…so very wrong…
You got out of bed and got dressed in a rush and without a plan, all you knew was that you were going out there to find him.
It barely took a few minutes to get ready and you left your room, quietly you passed the doors of the sleeping nuns in the hall.
The kitchen was the last room you needed to pass to get outside and let that be where you encountered a problem. The faint sound of metal made you halt and look around the corner.
There was the Abbess, drinking wine in the middle of the night.
Even this abbey held secrets you were yet to learn off. After waiting a little bit, she finally finished the tankard of wine and then poured another one…
Biting back a curse, you returned to your room and pulled the sheets from your bed.
Like weeks ago, you made a make-shift rope from the bed linen.
You couldn’t believe you had to resort to climbing out a window again, at least it wasn’t far to the ground.
Either it was your growing experience, or it was actually easier to climb down these walls.
Once safely on the ground, you hurried to fetch a horse.
Sister Anne had been awake, reading a book beside the candle light in her room when she’d heard a noise.
Of course you had been the first person she had went to alert, only to find your room empty and the freshly washed linen dangling out the window.
The confused nun had hurried outside, taking one of the lesser known paths to the outside in case the Abbess was drinking her ‘tea’ in the kitchens again “What on earth are you doing?”
It gave you quite a fright and you spun around “Goodness, you scared the life out of me.”
She countered it with “You? What about me? I just saw your sheets dangling out the window! What are you doing?!?”
What would you even tell her? That you had a nightmare? That the monk you loved was in trouble?
Nothing would make you sound like a sane person, so you just blurted out the truth “A friend is in trouble. I am going to find them.”
It only confused her more “What? How do you even know they are in trouble?”
You groaned in frustration “Please, Anne. You once asked me what my sign was to come here. Would it be so strange that I also received a sign that someone dear to me is in trouble?”
After some thought, she nodded “It could be possible. But why are you going alone?”
You told her the truth “I don’t want the Abbess to know, she would not allow me to go. And…I didn’t know who to ask for help. I’m used to doing things on my own.”
Anne was quiet for a beat and got closer to you “We can take the wagon. Come on.”
She didn’t even question you…
It had left you speechless to see this girl just chose to help a person without needing a full explanation.
Together you had gotten on the wagon and began the journey into the forest.
She glanced over at you while holding the reins “You know where this friend is, right?”
Oh…
It came out sounding very timid “A place with only ash trees and weeping willows. It’s near a river.”
Anne said nothing for a while and you feared she might even turn the wagon around and ride back to the abbey, instead she suddenly exclaimed “Oh, I know that place. It’s not that far from here. We used fallen branches from there to make baskets last year.”
She had no issue with you not even knowing about the place.
After riding the wagon in silence for a while, you explained why you had chosen such an odd way to exit “I climbed out the window because-”
Anne already guessed it “The Abbess was in the kitchen, wasn’t she?”
You nodded and laughed softly “So, it is a common thing?”
She mimicked the Abbess’ voice “One must have their evening tea.”
Seeing her act so openly was quite nice “That wasn’t tea.”
Trying to hold in her laughter failed and the both of you giggled over it.
As the journey continued, she told more of these ‘secrets’ that the abbey held at night.
Some sisters would sneak out too, some would take things from the kitchens and so on.
Your interest in her grew “What was your sign to become a nun?”
The story came out with short pauses in between “I have a little brother. Our parents and him fell ill with the plague, mother did not survive. I prayed every night for my brother and father to be spared, one night I swore I would become a nun and serve god if he saved my brother. The next morning, the fever was gone.”
With interest you listened “And how are they now? Your brother and father I mean.”
It made her visibly happy to speak of them “They are good. My father is a carpenter and he is teaching my brother the craft. I have a small wooden chest in my room that they made for me, it has flowers etched into the wood.”
Your time on the wagon was spend on asking more about her life, seeing her happy gave you hope that one day things would get better for you too.
An hour had passed when Anne stopped the wagon and pointed to your left “It’s over there.”
Carefully you got off the wagon, minding your step in the dark. The weeping willows excluded the moon’s light for the most part.
Luckily, Anne was the one to think of bringing along a set of lanterns and she handed you one.
She took the lead while walking next to you “Careful where you step, there’s a lot of fallen branches in this time of year.”
You remained close to her, helping each other more than once to stay on your feet.
Suddenly she pulled at your arm and knelt in the grass, the lantern hovered above something on the ground “Is that blood?”
You hoped it wasn’t, but the marks on your arm were saying something different “Let’s hurry.”
It was tricky to move through the forest in the dark and the hope to find him was growing slimmer by the minute.
Until the voice of a child reached your ears…
A look was shared between Anne and you, then you headed into the direction of the sound.
The display you stumbled unto was one you would never forget.
There he was, covered in blood both dry and fresh, his face was severely bruised on the temple and jaw, a black eye that was visible from afar.
This wasn’t good at all.
And the young boy that was weeping and pleading for him to wake up had bruises and a black eye as well.
Anne pulled the boy’s attention when she uttered in shock “Dear god, is that the Weeping Monk?”
You nodded “It is.”
Neither of you were given the chance to get closer.
The boy grabbed the sword, albeit with some effort, from Lancelot’s side.
He rose the sword and pointed it at you “I know you! You’re with the paladins!”
Anne took a couple of steps back while you faced the wrath of the boy.
It was understandable that a Fey child would not think much of you considering your connection to the priest who caused them so much suffering and you were dressed in the robes of the abbey…
The boy stayed where he was, not straying far from the wounded Ash Man’s side.
You knelt down without getting closer, hoping to look less of a threat “It is true I am Father Carden’s niece. But I am not with the paladins, nor do I share the Church’s believes and opinions on the Fey.”
He was not convinced “I don’t believe you!”
It was more a plea than a statement “I am here to help.” when he did not lower the sword, you tried the greeting you had once heard from the Green Knight “Born in the dawn…”
It only made him more vigilant “You’re not Fey! Who told you to say that?”
You remained still as a statue “I’m sorry. I heard the Green Knight say it when I met him.”
For a second the sword seemed to be lowered, only for it to be lifted up again “Stay back! Go away! He’s not going back to the paladins!”
It sounded like this boy would fight tooth and claw to keep Lancelot away from anything related to the Church.
Your eyes flickered over to an unconscious Lancelot, tears brimmed in your eyes “Please, I am begging you, boy. I know Lancelot. Please, let me help him.”
He didn’t listen to your pleas “My name is Squirrel, not ‘boy’ ! And they knew him too and they still tried to kill him!”
Kill him? Why on earth would they wish to do so? And why was he here with only a Fey child at his side? Why did the boy stay with him?
Anne feared the child would not let either of you near the wounded Monk “What do we do?”
There was only one way left to prove that you had a connection to Lancelot, one that did not include the Church’s or your uncle’s influence.
This meant Anne would learn the truth on who the Weeping Monk really was…
Slowly you rolled up your sleeve and showed the bangle “Lancelot gave me this…” then you rolled it up higher and showed the markings to the boy “…and this too.”
Anne took a step back, realizing what this meant, you send her an apologetic look.
The boy came closer to get a better look, even he recognized marks from Fey origin “He gave you that?”
You nodded “He is my friend, always has been.”
Finally he lowered the sword and the concern won from the suspicion “You will help us?”
With determination, you answered “Yes. Will you let us?”
He seemed to think long and hard before agreeing “Alright. Hurry up then.” the boy quickly returned to Lancelot’s side “He won’t wake up. I tried slapping him.”
You rose to your feet quickly, only to drop to your knees again next to the wounded Monk “Slapping won’t help if he’s bleeding too much.”
Anne slowly got closer to the three of you, not really knowing what to think of it all.
Squirrel murmured more to himself “I thought I wasn’t doing it hard enough.”
Goodness, you had arrived right on time it seems “Squirrel, don’t slap him.”
He nodded sheepishly and watched you try and see how badly wounded his savior was.
You’d barely touched him and your hands were already covered in blood “What happened to you?”
Squirrel explained it as best as he could “He caught the Green Knight. I wanted to save the knight but the paladins caught me. They wanted to hurt me, but Lancelot freed me. When we were leaving the paladin camp, the Trinity Guard stopped us. They almost killed him.”
It was clear to see that the boy didn’t like to think back to that moment. This explained why your mark had hurt… you could feel the pain of the one who had given it.
It was out of pure concern that you reached over and rubbed a hand over Squirrel’s arm “It’s going to be alright.”
The boy let it happen, even though it looked like he wasn’t used to it.
You inspected Lancelot further, weapons had cut through the layers of his attire on multiple places. His arms had gotten the worst of it, he must have defended himself heavily against the many attacks.
You prayed the bruises on his face were not a warning sign of a head injury, if only he would wake…
Anne pulled herself together and concerned herself over the boy.
You cupped Lancelot’s face and tried to wake him “Lancelot? Can you hear me?” you took hold of his hand “Squeeze my hand if you can hear me.”
His hand remained still and you tried to gently rub along his shoulder, none of it worked to wake him.
The forest was cold, he would die if he remained outside like this, you turned to your friend “Anne, we need to get him somewhere safe.”
She guessed your thoughts “We can’t bring him to the abbey, if what the boy says is correct, the Weeping Monk has committed treason. It would not be safe for him there.”
Well, she had a point “Is there anywhere else?”
Anne thought for a second, then suggested “There’s an abandoned barn near the abbey…”
You sprung into action “Then we’ll take him there. Will you help me?”
There was a deep sigh “I’ll go and bring the wagon closer.”
Even after Anne had brought the wagon closer, it still took some effort from all three to get Lancelot on it. When that finally happened, you hopped on too while Squirrel rode in front with Anne.
The whole ride was spend on trying to wake him up, your heart sank at the sight of him so injured.
If this had happened the previous night, he had been wandering the forest like this for over a day.
You stroked your fingers along his cheek and hoped he’d feel it. You spoke softly to him and hoped he’d hear.
The wagon came to a halt at a barn that was indeed deserted, next came the task of getting him off of the wagon again.
It was a mixture of stumbling and a lot of lifting, but with some coordination it worked.
There were old bales of straw still inside the barn and one wool blanket that you used to cover the straw before putting Lancelot down on it.
The three of you caught your breath for a moment and you asked Anne “He’s bleeding so much, what do I do?”
Anne went to the barn door “I’ll run to the abbey and fetch what is needed from the infirmary. I’ll do it, I’ll sew his wounds shut. There’s not much more we can do, the Church will be looking for him. If they knew we are helping him, they’ll burn us too.”
She was risking a lot by doing this “Thank you, Anne.”
She gave a nod and left the barn to fetch most of what was needed.
Squirrel looked quite concerned with it all and you hoped to distract him a little.
You pointed at Lancelot’s cloak “Will you help me take some of his clothing off so Anne can help him when she gets back?”
The young boy quietly nodded and the other sword was the first thing he removed.
You worked slow, watching to see if Squirrel was alright “You’re doing good, Squirrel.”
It was a team effort to remove the cloak, surcoat, doublet and undershirt.
And the boy appeared glad to be helpful during this, clearly he did not like to feel helpless especially with things like this.
You kept praising him for the help, making sure that his efforts did not go by unnoticed.
Now that Lancelot was shirtless, the damage done to him was visible. A multitude of cuts were scattered across his arms and torso. The bruises were both on his back and arms. Dried blood mixed with fresh and was a hazard for infection.
You brushed some stray locks back from his face to see the wound on his temple.
They truly intended to kill him…after all his years of loyalty.
Your hand lingered.
Squirrel noticed “Is he going to die?”
You looked at the worried boy “I do not know. But I’m not giving him up without a fight.”
Squirrel was glad to hear that he was not the only one that would fight for the survival of his newly acquired friend.
Sister Anne walked back into the barn in a hurry, Squirrel ran up to help her by carrying the bucket of water she had with her along with other needed items.
Needle and thread, clean linen cloths, bandages and something that looked like ointment.
She sat beside you “We need to keep the wounds clean.”
You looked at your surroundings “Anne, we’re in a barn.”
Anne responded with “Better than leaving him in the woods for the wolves.”
Squirrel went to sit on a bale of hay and watched how you and Anne began to help Lancelot.
You were tasked with washing the blood away while she stitched the wounds shut.
The continuous bleeding on some wounds made it a tedious task.
Something crossed your thoughts “Do you have something for the pain for when he wakes up?”
She looked apologetic while shaking her head “We ran out a couple of days ago. The abbey is still waiting for the vials to be delivered.”
Oh heaven… if or when he would wake, he would be in a lot of pain. Perhaps it was best he was unconscious during this.
Anne mumbled while focusing on her task “This is so strange to me…”
You guessed “Because you know him as the Weeping Monk?”
She nodded “The stories they tell of him… one would forget he is still of flesh and blood. And he is Fey… I don’t understand it.”
You dabbed a wound dry “The Church sees the Fey as an evil that must be cleansed, it still does not stop some holy men to use them for their own advantage.”
The young nun looked lost in thought as she threaded the needle again “That mark you have on your arm, if they knew of it…”
Your eyes lifted from his skin “I do not intend to tell them. Do you?”
She denied it and pulled the thread through his skin once more “I won’t. You have done me no wrong. Besides, who will knit me socks if you’re gone?”
You sheepishly recalled the moment you had given her a pair “The first pair didn’t even fit you.”
Anne shrugged her shoulders “They did fit Sister Lily.”
Squirrel came closer, without prompting he helped to put the bandages on.
When cleaning and closing the wounds was finished, he still looked very battered, at least he would not bleed to death now.
If he had not lost too much blood already…
Sister Anne stood up from the ground “I will go and see if we perhaps have some clothing that will fit him. We do collect clothes for the poorest, there might be something among them.”
It looked like dawn was begin to approach, soon those of the abbey would notice your absence “Anne, I can’t leave him here alone like this. But the Abbess will notice I’m gone.”
She already thought of it “I’ll tell them you’re sick and resting in your room. Don’t fret, the other nuns have all used the excuse before for one reason or another. If I find clothes, I will bring them here, but then I need to head back and do my chores at the abbey before the Abbess figures out that something is off.”
You understood and thanked her for giving you the chance to remain here “Thank you, Anne. Truly.”
With the agreed upon solution, she left the barn again to search for clothes.
