Otto Lendecke (1886-1918), 'Erscheinung' (Apparition), ''Simplicissimus'', #13, June 26, 1917 Source
The word 'Erscheinung' can also be translated as 'phenomenon' or 'appearance' or 'vision' depending on context so I choose the form that seemed, to me, to possess the most aesthetically pleasing (and poetic) feel.

Fashion Friday
This week, we present a range of fashion from the 18th through early 20th centuries from our 1908 collection of dance illustrations, Der Tanz, by the Austrian artist Ferdinand von Řezníček (1868-1909). This folio volume was published in Munich by Albert Langen (1869-1909), and most of the illustrations appeared earlier in Langen’s popular satirical weekly Simplicissimus. We are quite taken by the action, drama, and humor in these color lithographs that are so evocative of the era. Wikipedia notes that von Řezníček became an editorial assistant for Langen when he launched Simplicissimus, and von Řezníček's "subtly erotic drawings contributed greatly to the success of that publication."

Jugend
Many years ago, I discovered the turn-of-the-last-century German magazine Simplicissimus. While I couldn’t read German, I immediately fell in love with the drawings. I have always loved the approach to art in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and Simplicissimus delivered. My original writings about the magazine were lost when I purged my website years ago, but I mentioned Simplicissimus a…

Staff Pick of the Week
I was looking for another item in our stacks the other day when I came across this book that I don’t recall ever seeing before. Der Tanz is a 1908 collection of dance illustrations by the Austrian artist Ferdinand von Řezníček (1868-1909) published in Munich by Albert Langen (1869-1909), most of which appeared in Langen’s popular satirical weekly Simplicissimus. I was quite taken by the sweeping action, drama, and humor in these Art Nouveau/Gibson Girl-style color lithographs, so evocative of the era.
Just had to share.
