Pizza statt Pisa – Uber Eats beweist Sprachwitz in Werbekampagne
Statt „hongdeng“ (紅燈, rotes…

OJT EATS | Sakanakun
Tumblr media
As we're sure we have mentioned multiple times on this blog, we at OJT love good seafood and are always ont he lookout. We passed by this place, Sakanakun in a food court in XinYi as part of one of the department stores. We were a bit mesmerized by photos of all the quite frankly epic looking rice bowld, (boy they all looked delicious but we had to buckle down and pick one each.
Tumblr media
Our food came together on this tray of goodies. As you can see, it looked amazing! Just that bowl topped with that amazing seafood deliciousness was making our mouths water! It was like a whole set meal so let's break down the parts one by one.
Tumblr media
For a little bit of freshness, we had a salad. Pretty simple but also pretty tasty
Tumblr media
We had a small side dish of pickled enoki mushrooms. Not too vinegary and with the slightly almost crunchy texture of enoki mushrooms, this was a lovely little side.
Tumblr media
This was a chawanmushi with like a thick seaweedy broth on top. Really nice and there was a fair amount of filling in there too which was very nice!
Tumblr media
And now onto the star of the show. This donburi was amazing with 3 of my favourite things when it comes to sushi, ikura, uni and scallop. Chuck in some flounder and otoro and I think I'd be in heaven. This thing had really generous amounts of the seafood and I found myself finishing this in no time.
Tumblr media
We got another set that had all the same things but with different toppings for the rice. This one was super salmon heavy with a whole lot of salmon sashimi and a big smattering of ikura on top. So good!!
This place is pretty great for scratching that sushi itch without actually going to a proper sushi place. The actual seafood is super fresh and as you can clearly see from the bowls, you get a lot of seafood on each donburi! This place is a winner for me and will definitely be trying to get back there at some point!

Wondrous Milk Pond, Grilled Mochi, & Mitsukoshi at Xinyi
April 22-27, 2023 Food Trip to Taipei, Taiwan
Part One
What a rewarding outdoor experience at “Yangmingshan National Park”.  Part of a six day tour with John, his eldest sister and her daughter, four days were raining and cold. But this trip had been conceived since February, with five (5) participants, possibly six (6), rescheduled twice, hotel reservation amended three times, and time was essential before our May trip back to the US.  We did not cancel.
From the parking lot, we first took a short climb up the vista point. Down below, barely visible through the fog was this post-volcanic collection of sulphur that turned milky white in a crater like lake.  There was no direct path down to view this wonder up close. It is protected and preventive because of fumes.   Called “Cold Water Lake”, city dwellers come here often.  This is a popular site.
Quickly enjoying the rest of the trail, while the rain was trickling down gently, soon, it was lunch time. At a crowded and popularly-priced dining spot called “Green Leaf Garden” or “Qingcaiyuan Restaurant”, we partook of free range roast chicken, yam soup, newly harvested mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and vegetables.  A short stroll after lunch, the road was accented with magnificent calla lily fields.  Hydrangeas have not blossomed yet when we were there so we were most likely a few weeks too early to witness another spectacular sight.  The lilies are the Asiatic variety, all white. We came across a gazebo-like nursery in the middle of the field with beauteous pots of budding & sweet smelling gardenias. Down the road, we spotted a shop (SHOPPING ALERT) with various sizes and media of pottery, craft, plants, mugs, and flowers. It was so tempting to buy and bring back to our apartment either in Manila or Foster City, but it would just be too cumbersome to pack or to ship.
That was actually our Day 3 or Monday.
We arrived at our hotel late Saturday afternoon and after checking in, we headed out to grab a quick dinner at the Taipei 101 Food Court consisting of familiar comfort food:  pork belly rice, oyster omelet, and pork bone soup with radish.  Taipei 101 was just a walkway away.
In the days to come, that would be our go to place:  we had our Din Tai Fung lunch there, snacks and visits to the Sunny Hills pastry shop (apple cake was delicious), and Mia C’Bon, the supermarket.
Our hotel, the Grand Hyatt Taipei, was also near the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store, a gigantic multi-building shopping mecca at Xinyi District where on our last free day before departure, we shopped at Muji, Aesop, and the cosmetics and skin care counters.  Unfortunately, trying to get into Shin Yeh A9 Restaurant for lunch was a long 2 hour wait.  Also near the hotel were 2 different Uniqlo stores, one smaller and one slightly larger.  We also wanted to go into Canada Goose Store for their nice parkas and jackets, but they were still close.

Unrecorded Memories and Missing Taiwan #4
I’m back again with the continuation from my previous posts! Although I need to admit that it does get boring that I have to write the same topic over and over again while personally wanting to write a different post (literally been itching to write something new), but I don’t like the idea of not finishing this post series till the end (just because it looks great to have 1, 2, 3, and so on side by side without having something unrelated in between).
If I have to describe my last two weeks in Taiwan, I would say that it’s just like a holiday rather than a summer exchange program.
Tumblr media
Me and My Roommates: Karen, Vincy, and Iris (from left to right) in Gaomei Wetlands
12) I have never mentioned my dorm roommates in my previous posts, that’s because they just moved in when I’m on my last week of AI program. I was actually quite busy with the AI studies (yes, when I get back to my dorm, I do try to revise what the professors have taught us) and trying to blend in with the students in my class that I didn’t have any time to hang out with my roommates. I feel bad for always rejecting them whenever they ask me out. They were really kind to even include me in most of their outings.
Since I lived in a room for 4 people, I have three roommates and they were from Hong Kong. Their names are Vincy, Karen and Iris. The three of them join the same summer program class and they’re also from the same university. Although they said that they didn’t know each other yet before this program, they were so close together. Maybe having a lot of similarities help them bond. Vincy and Karen were from the same major which is social work, while Iris came from journalism major. Among the four of us, Vincy was the oldest as she is a senior (class of 2015) while the rest of us were juniors (class of 2016).
13) I think I started going out with them after my AI summer class ends. Every time we didn’t have any class trip on the weekend, we would plan our trip around the city. My friend, Iris, were like the tour guide among us because she was always the one who plan out our day (researching the best routes and where we should go)
I also get to befriend Singaporean friends, Jasmine and Hui En, who also took the same class as my roommates. They came with us during one of our trips and that was the time I were introduced to both of them.
14) Our first trip, if my memory still serves me well, is going to various places during the weekend. We went to Taichung Old Train Station, which is a heritage building and the trains are still operating in there! I forgot if we went there by bus or taxi, but I think it’s more likely by bus.
Tumblr media
Taichung Old Train Station can be seen together with modern buildings.
Since the EasyCard/ Youyou Card that is used in public transportation allows a free 10 Km of ride by bus, we didn’t spend a lot. In fact, when I was there for a month, after buying the card for 100 NTD and depositing another 100 NTD (I think?), I had never recharge the card again. Some people say, they can even not recharge it for a year or so if you just make use of the 10 Km free ride (if you know what I mean).
15) After that, we went to ride the bus to our next destination which is the Miyahara Ice Cream Shop. When we get there, there was a long queue line and it was packed with people. The shop is one of the tourist spot in Taichung and besides selling ice cream (duh), they also sell souvenirs and other delicacies like traditional cakes and so on. The shop is quite big and if we go further inside beyond the ice cream display, we can see a souvenir shop like below. The interior of the shop also gives off a Harry Potter vibe which is really cool and could also serves as a potential photo spots (although it would be hard with the place being packed with tourists).
Tumblr media
Inside Miyahara Ice Cream Shop where they sell their various souvenirs
It was a good experience overall. You would think that a long queue would mean waiting long but since I came with my friends, time flies so fast. We were also given a menu to choose and tick off while waiting in our queue, so we were really busy debating what flavor we would want to try. Pst, by the way, they also give out unique toppings for the ice cream. I have to admit that the ice cream is quite expensive but worth it for the size and taste. I especially love ice creams so when we arrived there, I was really excited (hahahaha!).
16)  For our lunch, we went to a mall to find a place for us to eat together and ended up with an Italian themed restaurant, which is one of the most expensive meal I had in Taiwan. Fortunately, we split it among the six of us and shared various menus ranging from main dish to dessert. I think it’s also the main reason it’s expensive, we ate 6 different dishes with 3 of them in large servings. For those who’s interested, the name of the Italian restaurant is called Miacucina located in Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Taichung. However, I don’t recommend eating here if you want to eat on budget.
Tumblr media
The Ice Cream Waffle shared between six people
17) Another destination for our Saturday Adventures is the Gaomei Wetlands in Taichung. We went there using taxi because we didn’t want to run late especially since we wanted to be there before the sunset. Aside from wetlands, there’s also a Wind Turbine. In fact, one of the bus station near Gaomei Wetlands is called Wind Turbine No. 18, which is also around the location where we alight. I remembered walking through the bridge, but I think to get to Gaomei Wetlands, we need to take a shuttle bus or walk more to get there.
Tumblr media
We took a photo on the bridge viewing the Wind Turbine (Strong Wind!)
After arriving at the Gaomei Wetlands, we need to cross a wooden jetty to actually accessed the wetlands (wet feet here I come!). This is because below the jetty there were baby crabs and we were not allowed to walk there for fear of crushing those precious lives. There were even staffs who’s guarding it, sometimes blowing his whistle when he spots someone trespassing. We were there for a limited time because we need to beware of the high tide after certain hours.
When we get to the end of the jetty, there were a lot of shoes left there because we all wanted to get into the wetlands and it would be a no go if your shoes get wet too. This is where I think I made a mistake on my choice of outfit that day, because as you can see I was wearing long black jeans. So, I had to roll my jeans up but thankfully because of the low tide, our feet didn’t get too submerged into the water. I took a lot of pictures and videos that day because of the unique experience. TBH, I rarely took pictures of my activities but I just had to that day because it was an all new experiences for me.
You can even bring your dog there, because I’ve seen one or two dogs walked by their owners. We even had the chance to actually take pictures with the cute dog and it was taken by the owner who later send us the pictures.
Tumblr media
This is one of the pictures I took when I reached the wetlands. Most of my picture were backlighted so this is the best one among the others.
18) After watching the sunset for a while, we went to our last destination. I think we took a taxi to the night market. I forgot which night market it is but I think it should be Yi Zhong Night Market. We had our dinner there by indulging ourselves from one stall to another. I also tried Xing Fu Tang, my first brown sugar bubble tea, upon my friend’s recommendation and it was only around 50 NTD (which is much cheaper then the Xing Fu Tang on my country). The first time I tasted the bubble tea, I came to love it so much for its rich and surprising taste. It was sweet warm caramel at the top and cold milk tea at the bottom, it was mixed together but in a good way. However, when the franchise is available on my country, it wasn’t as good as the first time I tasted it. I wonder why.
Tumblr media
Pedestrians @ Yi Zhong Night Market
19) So that’s it for our Saturday adventure! After walking for a few hours tasting snacks and delicacies we found on the night market, we went back to our dormitory by bus. It was exhausting to walk all day outside, but I really enjoy going out with them because there were a lot of places I wouldn’t go if it weren’t for them and they were fun to converse with. I also am not confident enough yet, to go solo travelling in a country foreign to me so I was really grateful.
That night, we took a late night bath and I for one were taught on an early age not to take a bath late at night because it was not good for our health but because of our activities, I had to. Fortunately, the dormitories in Taiwan provide water heater (All hail water heater!).
While we’re on the topic of ‘bathing’, I just realized this after observing my roommates for a few days, they tend to take a bath late at night before they went to sleep and they didn’t take a bath early in the morning before they go out. They just wash their face and did their makeup. I was actually very surprised with this since all three of them did it. So, I was intrigued to ask them about it and they explained that since they took a bath last night and going out will get them dirty, so why bother take a bath before going outside? Instead, they would take a bath before hitting the hay because that way the bed won’t get dirty. I thought to myself that their reasoning makes complete sense to me too apart from my own reasons to take a bath twice a day. It was trivial but I think these small things shapes our cultural behavior and it was actually interesting for me know that people from different country have different ‘normal’ too. While I think taking a bath twice a day was normal, it was not the case for my roommates.
I guess I’ll continue my ‘Sunday Adventure’ with my roommates in the next post because I think this post has been too long. There were a lot of places we visited that eventful Saturday and I had fun reminiscing about my trip. Since today’s Saturday, I think it’s the perfect time to actually post this! So, enjoy~!
PS. It has been so long since I write and this post have been on my draft since forever! I had been busy trying to find jobs (but not lucky yet) and tried to make my time more meaningful by studying online.

It was my first 100% free flight, as I used my GetGo Cebu Pacific through my points that accumulated in my account. I took a late night Saturday flight to Taipei during my second visit to Taiwan. Therefore, it was obvious that I will arrived in the city at early morning the next day. Like what I did during my first visit, just eight months earlier, I rented a pocket WI-FI with the same provider I had before and picked it up at the same convenience store at the basement of the airport which opens 24 hours (as other provider are closed after 8 PM). After that, I went straight to the bus terminal, bought a ticket and waited for the next bus that brought me to Taipei. I checked-in to the same hotel that I had before since it is comfortable place to rest and near in Taipei Main Station.
Tumblr media
Since it was Sunday, I had personal commitment in the morning, then I used the rest of Sunday exploring nearby places from my accommodation in Taipei, a walk-able tourist spot that I can visit in the afternoon. I started my walk from a well know station in the country, none other than Taipei Main Station.
Taipei Main Station
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I came from in Xinzhuang District, New Taipei City for my morning commitment, I arrived in Taipei Main Station Bus Stop near  Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Taipei Station Store and cross the road to reach the South Entrance / Exit of Taipei Main Station. I explored the station as I need to exchange the 3 Days Taiwan High-Speed Rail Unlimited Pass that I bought few days earlier before my scheduled flight to Taiwan. I bought the pass as I planned to explore places outside Taipei, to explore other parts of Taiwan. And while walking inside the station, I saw lots of people gathered at the center of the station, an open space which at first I thought that there were events happening but it was none.

That moment, I realized, most people came there in the open hall were mostly my countrymen. I remembered, it was Sunday – the common rest day of my fellow Filipinos that works in Taiwan. And then, I remembered the similar situation that I experienced when I worked in Singapore. Sunday is the rest day for most Filipinos that works as domestic helper and commonly meet up in Lucky Plaza in Orchard Road in Singapore. I learned it was the place where my countrymen usually meet up in Taiwan – Taipei Main Station it is. Observing them just like they were there, sitting together with acquaintances and friends, it was a social place that I thought maybe made them feel at ease as they with familiar faces back home.

Taiwan Railway LDK58 Steam Train, Displayed at Taipei Main Station East 2 Exit
I went outside the station from East Exit and there I still saw Filipinos, just sitting around, spending their time to chill. Next, I saw a Taiwan Railway LDK58 Steam Train, displayed near East 2 Entrance / Exit of the station. And people came near the steam train to do a selfie photos with it. After taking couple photos of the steam train, I walked around from East part to South part  of the station. At that time, I was still thinking where to go and then, I thought the first place to see where I can play with my DSLR camera, that was the North Gate.

North Gate (Cheng’en men)
I did not realize that I will learn something about the Taipei City Wall while walking in Beimen Memorial Park. There were displays at the ground explaining the Cultural Significance of Old Taipei City’s “Axial Lines”, History of Taipei City Wall, how the city wall were built, its materials and structural features, how the stones quarried used to build the city wall and it also features the planting and paving design of the park itself which still conveys cultural significance related to North Gate. I honestly enjoyed my walk in the park.

The Cultural Significance of Old Taipei City’s “Axial Lines”
Tumblr media
The Cultural Significance of Old Taipei City’s “Axial Lines”
Qing Dynasty Taipei City’s “Axial Lines” reveal two main strands of cultural significance. Taipei City’s “ceremonial axis” was constructed to run north-south from in front of the Taipei Yamen (government) to Wen and Wu Temples, along Chongqing South Road (then called Fuqian Street in the north and Wenwu Street in the south). This central axis and all north-south streets where directly aligned toward the North Star, forming a chessboard grid with east-west streets,Taipei’s fortified city was Taiwan’s only Qing Dynasty city to be laid out rectangularly. This spatial pattern manifest the city’s “ceremonial system” according to the “royal city” layout prescribed in the Book of Rites.
The History of Taipei City Wall
Tumblr media
The History of Taipei City Wall
Plans to build Taipei City Wall were instituted by Chen Hsing-chu, the Magistrate of Taipei Prefecture, in 1879. Rough 5000 meters long, 5.76 meters high, 3.84 meters thick, and battlemented, it was topped by a horse path and surrounded by a moat.
Five gates served passage through the wall; Chen’enmen (the North Gate), Jingfumen (the East Gate), Baochengmen (the West Gate), Lizhenmen (the Main South Gate) and Chongximen (the Little South Gate). The North and West Gates were fortified on the exterior with enceintes. Built of stone, it was Taiwan’s only rectangular city wall, surpassing all others in height and magnificence. Construction of the wall and gate towers was completed in 1884.
How Stone Was Quarried for Taipei City Wall
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
How Stone Was Quarried for Taipei City Wall
The stone materials for the wall and gates were obtained locally. The foundation slabs came from Beishihu in Dazhi, cut from the hill stones using small chisels. To extract each 12-foot-long slab, the workmen first chiseled out 7-8 equidistant square holes in the stone surface. They then placed 5-to-6 flat chisels 3 inches into the holes, obliquely inserted half-inch-thick iron plates on two sides of the chisels, and struck the chisels with 15-pound hammers to split off long stone bars. Finally, they cut the stone bars into small slabs, measuring one foot wide by four to five feel long, for ease of transportation.
Planting and Paving Design Concepts
Tumblr media
Planting and Paving Design Concepts
The North Gate has the greatest historic significance among Taipei’s five gates. It was the most used tea merchants and foreign traders who congregated in Dadaocheng outside the wall. Governor Liu Ming-chuan built the train station nearby and the tax office machinery bureau and many foreign firms were located in the gate’s vicinity. The Qing government ceremonial arch for the reception of officials was set outside it.
The landscape design of the North Gate Square not only beautified the square but also gave expression to Taipei’s history and cultural essence. The paving and planting tell the story of each landscape element.
Jasmin Flowers
The tea trading firms in Dadaocheng enjoyed booming prosperity at that time. The jasmine used for scenting tea became a signature plant of the Dadaocheng tea industry.
Roadside Trees under Japanese Rule
The Japanese authorities removed the city wall to make way for the building the park like three-lane road – a symbol of modern urban planning. The carefully selected roadside tress, such as Bischofia javanica (bishopwood) and Cinnamomum camphora, hold special significance in the development of Taipei’s avenues.
The Building Materials and Structural Features of Taipei City Wall
Tumblr media
The Building Materials and Structural Features of Taipei City Wall
Two kinds of stone were used to build the Taipei City Wall. The underground foundations were built with sandstone take from the Beishihu in Dazhi (then called Qili’an stone), while harder grey-black andesite (Guanyinshan stone) was used for the wall’s protective facing. To solve the challenge of the ground’s soft upper stratum, Chinese fir foundation piles were driven down to the hard soil sever meters below ground. Then, beams 3-5 meters long were placed horizontally to form a platform on which ten layers of sandstone labs were laid in a right-angled criss-cross pattern. The wall was about 3.6 meters thick. To form a strong protective shield, the wall was faced with andesite laid in a Flemish double-stretcher bond. Its interior was filled with pebbles and rammed earth.

It was a relaxing walk in Beiman Memorial Park or The North Gate Square or The North Gate Plaza. It was also worth knowing that North Gate and the park itself was just recently renovated and improve as part of cultural preservation of Taipei. But I truly admired what Taiwan government did when they removed the elevated highway just to make emphasis of the historic North Gate as one of the symbol cultural heritage of the city.
