The Great ACT-NSW-NZ Trip, 2023-2024- The Rest of Canberra
We weren't in Canberra for long, despite our original plans - but after the property manager for the place we were supposed to be staying ghosted us, @purrdence had to completely change our accommodation for the first few days, and we had less time to see more of the sites. We did the obligatory visit to Parliament House where the grounds were appropriately full of galahs, obnoxious freeloaders, and European pests (the actual parrot, seagulls, and rabbits) and I did find a few species on a windowsill at the motel, near Mt. Ainsley when I was mailing beetles to a coleopterist, and out at the National Arboretum.
Tumblr media
The Arboretum was established after the devestating bushfires of 2001 and 2003 burnt out most of the area. It currently has 44,000 trees planted, many rare or symbolic, but it's still quite a few decades off maturity (although some of a much earlier planting of Himalayan Cedar did survive the fires).
A few of the species were ones I've covered before, admittedly, I didn't think that the ones at the Arboretum or the National Bonsai Collection there really count, but here's a Plantain Moth, Scopula rubraria, previously covered here.

(Wormton AU) Somehow I went from putting a worm on a string inside my Spamton plushie's head to a 150k+ word fanfiction about the last living member of an entire extinct species of Spamton-themed giant predatory parasitoid computer-worm centipedes who is wearing a DIY skin suit (he has social anxiety)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Extra brain rot ⬇️
Tumblr media
Molting process (shedding the exoskeleton, including hair)
Tumblr media
Being fed a tracking chip hidden in a meat cube (in reference to Cyber City's efforts exterminating the BIGSHOT malworm (Wormton's species) during the 1997 invasion)
Tumblr media
Top: muscles inside of the malworm's mouth allow its teeth to fold and receed inwards, allowing it to close its mouth properly.
A malworm's "teeth" are not actual teeth; they are parts of the mandible and are regularly shed alongside the rest of the exoskeleton.
Bottom: The aortic arches form the malworm's "hearts." They assist in moving blood around the body like a normal heart would. Malworms do not have a auditory heart beat.
The malworm lung structure is divided into many small connected chambers that run along the body. Should one of the pseudo-lungs be damaged, the tube connecting it to the rest of the respiratory system will close up until the damage is repaired, allowing the malworm to survive a punctured "lung."
The gizzard is a part of the digestive system. It allows the malworm to digest difficult materials, including the metal, plastic, and other inorganic aspects of their darkner prey.
The prominent, squishy circular markings at the corners of the malworm's mouth are scent glands used to mark territory. Malworms that live together will affectionately rub their scents on each other.
The proboscis acts as a long hollow spear that malworms use to attack prey, inject venom, and inject eggs. While malworm hatchlings use their proboscis to slurp up liquified tissues (since they aren't born with jaws), adults prefer solid foods. The proboscis resembles a tongue when relaxed, but a malworm can extend it up to half its body length depending on the species.
The hair of a malworm is incredibly similar to a spider. While not nearly as sensitive as a spider's hair, their hairs can feel the environment and detect vibrations and movement if close enough. It is also hydrophobic and keeps the cold-blooded malworm warm.
Malworms have scopula pads (dense specialized hairs) on the bottom of their feet that allows them to stick to walls.
Tumblr media
The malworm's body parts, including the head, can reattach as long as the central nerve remains attached. If a body part is completely severed, the malworm will be able to regenerate it. A malworm can even completely regrow a severed head as long as it is tube-fed through the remainder of its throat. They are incredibly resilient, but far from invincible.
The malworm's nervous system acts as several "sub-brains" that allow the malworm to continue preforming basic functions (breathing, eating) even without a head.
The aforementioned fanfiction is not public yet. I plan to have a rough version of every chapter finished before I start sharing chapters on ao3, and I currently only have 76k words written.

*gives you all your favourite food as a thanks, for the tip*
*Valentino's has traces of SCP-940 inside it*
*SCP-940 is: a parasitoid organism with some superficial similarities to troglobitic members of the class Arachnida. Adult specimens are highly agile and possess leg spans from four to seven meters; due to the difficulty in separating SCP-940 from their hosts (see below), average weight and body size are moot considerations. Each of their eight translucent legs is dotted regularly with six types of specialized sensory organs—IR-sensitive pit organs; ampullae of Lorenzini; compound and non-compound eyes sensitive to UV; and two additional organs of indeterminate function—and end in large tarsal claws, possessing scopulae and setules common amongst species of hunting spiders and allowing them to climb sheer vertical surfaces with ease. SCP-940 possess a radial nerve net similar to Asteroidea, or the common starfish, and no central nervous system; the possibility that SCP-940 rely on their host's brainpower for processing of external stimuli cannot be ruled out at this time.*
I do love some jambalaya, much obliged!

Yellow Sac Spider/Cheiracanthium
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bite: Creates surface lesion with redness, swelling, burning. Medical attention recommended. Venom is slightly necrotic to humans
Behavior: Bites without reason, hunter (actively chases prey), cannibalistic, most common spider bites. Nocturnal. Do not jump, fast moving, escapes with silk when startled.
Habitat: Gardens, bushes, trees, during cold weather may seek shelter in houses. Northeastern United States, range expanded in recent decades, central Europe.
Size: Females body size range 5-9mm, males 4-8mm. Leg span 2.5cm/1in. Front pair of legs are longest. Males have more slender bodies.
Coloration: Light yellow body, brown jaws, darker legs, vertical dorsal stripes on abdomen. Males are darker. Diet can affect coloration
Body: Scopulae allows them to cling to smooth surfaces like glass, 8 eyes

Note: I lost some of my references for this entry - take with a grain of salt
Yellow Amycine Jumping Spider
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Note: I will be refrenceing Amycine when I can but not much is known about the species
Bite: Unlikely to bite humans, usually runs away. Causes redness, itching, stinging, and swelling. Can be cleaned with soap and water, does not require medical attention
Behavior: Can move rapidly sideways and backwards, pounce on prey. Can jump 20-50 times their body length, use silk dragline when jumping as safety line. Jumping is caused by sudden blood flow change, fully extending legs. Eats insects and other spiders, may drink nectar and plant matter. Hunts during the day.
Habitat: Vegetation, rocky areas, very widespread - no specific habitat. Not found in Greenland
Size: 3.175mm/0.75in, have larger front legs
Coloration: Extremely translucent, eye cones are visible. Joints are dark due to blood flow.
Eyes: Has two eyes on the front, two on each side, and two on the back of their head
References: Wikipedia, US Dept. of Agriculture, Washington State, PestWorld.Org, Michigan State
Striped Lynx Spider
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bite: Little danger to humans, only cause temporary pain and swelling.
Temperament: Daytime ambush predator, nimble. Can shoot venom 20cm/7.9in, only observed in adult females. Strong sense of smell to detect prey. Consuming nectar early in life can deter cannibalism and lengthen lifespan somewhat. Jumps and uses dragline like jumping spiders, is not classified as one.
Habitat: Native coast to coast of southern United States, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. Lives at the top of vegetation in open areas like fields and backyards. Most well seen in Florida and American South.
Size: Females 5.7-6.7mm, males 4-4.5mm and more slender. Fangs are large in proportion to head
Coloration: Pale yellow, can adjust coloration. Males resemble females, but are iridescent that can appear coppery, silvery-green, or purple. Males are usually more red/orange
References: North American Insects & Spiders, University Florida, University Florida, University Florida, iNaturalist
Other spiders I want to look at later: Heliophanus flavipes, Telamonia dimidiata, Crab spiders, Misumena vatia, orchard orbweaver
Note: Always do your own research!!! Doubt the information I gave you!!!
