we finally found another Myrmarachne ant mimic, in our bathroom of all places.
Tumblr media
I've been itching to get some more photos of these spiders since getting my speedlite, but they're very elusive and almost constantly in motion. thankfully this lady was content to explore a sheet of cardboard while I took a million photos of her like a madman.
Tumblr media
special shoutout to my wonderful partner for a) spotting the spider in our house and b) wiggling their fingers in front of her to keep her attention while I got these photos (it seems jumping spiders are the wayward cats of the arthropod world lol).
Tumblr media
I'll link my other Myrmarachne post here, as its interesting to compare the colouration of the two individuals. likely the same species, but my previous sighting had a much brighter gold on her abdomen.
Red-headed Ant-mimic Spider, female (Myrmarachne erythrocephala).

Phidippus purpuratus is a large jumping spider most often found in Canada and the northern US, where they live on the ground or among boulders in exposed, rocky habitats like mountaintops and sea cliffs. This is a rather different lifestyle from some of their more arboreal cousins, and I assume they rely on the warmth of sun-baked rocks to sustain activity in the cold and windswept places they inhabit.

They’re well camouflaged among the lichen covered granite on this mountain in Maine, probably because they have to be- more conspicuously colored jumpers like P. regius and audax often have the option to drop into dense vegetation when threatened, but I saw these hunting on bare rock with nowhere to run should they face the misfortune of being spotted by a bird.

male phaeacius malayensis !! found this little guy on a tree right outside school. look at how chill he is 😊🕷
these salticids are incredibly unique compared to most jumpers as they're less of active hunters and more ambush predators. despite this, they have one of the best eyesight among all jumpers -- in broad daylight, they have better vision than cats and can see up to 10 times the level of detail as dragonflies can!

won't be bringing this little guy back tho, apparently their preferred prey is other jumping spiders and i wouldn't have the heart to watch that .......

This man is so small he feels individual photons as a gentle rain 🥹
Neonella camillae are barely over 1mm full-grown. It's absurd and I love them so much
I was looking for them in C. Florida where they range, and found two somehow!
