#booknerd #antrodilibri #bibliophilelegentibus #amicandito #ilclubdeilettorifelici #storiebookite1 https://www.instagram.com/p/CjPmbqhsqq1/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

That said, I’m glad I wasn’t into RABBITS right when the series wrapped up.  Tumblr seems to have condemned the series as ~ableist trash~ due to a tremendous lack of listening/reading comprehension.
Yes, the events of the series are waved off by the authorities as “lol a crazy person did it.”   But that’s clearly not what the protagonist believes, and the listener shouldn’t either!  “Theodore Spino” and Carly’s choice at the end buy into a different explanation.  And Carly is not presented as an unreliable narrator in spite of her own mental health history.
I’m satisfied enough with the ending that I’d be happy with no sequel.  But considering how obsessed both Carly and Jones are with playing games, I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing them face off against one another in a sequel.
Here’s my take on what happened:
(spoilers below)
Jones is correct about the basic reasoning for the game.  RABBITS is a mechanism by which the universe course corrects.  By focussing the mental energy of a number of players on a single obscure fact pattern, it keeps timelines from dooming themselves by falling into entropy.  As Dr Light puts it -- the purpose is not money or power, but inspiration.
The Gatewycke Institute is an actual thing that the parents of Carly, Jones, and Emily Masterson were all involved with.  They were indeed experimenting on themselves or their children -- which may explain why Carly’s parents tolerated her brother living in their basement as a videotape addict well into his late thirties.  They broke him somehow.  He could have been part of R-8?
Carly and Jones have the ability to shunt themselves into a new reality during times of great duress.
Emily’s parents were part of the placebo group and thus she did NOT have this ability, which its why she died during RABBITS VIII.  That, or she DID have the ability and she used it to shunt away from Jones when he pulled something unbearable in his pursuit of a win.  I prefer the latter theory.  Jones has a history of violence (the arson) and it would explain why Yumiko thought that Jones murdered Emily.
Emily leaving caused Jones not to want to win RABBITS VIII.  He gave up instead.  Normally this wouldn’t have been a problem - lots of players are involved in each game iteration, someone else would have stepped up.  But something about Jones’ involvement kept things stuck on him.  Maybe the dimensional shunting made an ordinary "adjustment” impossible.
As a result of Jones’ actions, the timeline needed a hard reset -- it needed to shunt into something different.  The Gatewyck Institute needed to become Gatewyck Industries.  Jones couldn’t do it himself because he’d already fucked up on RABBITS VIII.  Only Carly could possibly complete RABBITS XI, which is why so much of the game seems to fixate on her.  The universe also wants her to win.
Jones isn’t “lol crazy” but he probably was manipulating Carly to some degree to fix what he broke.  I wouldn’t at all put it past him to fabricate evidence to hurry her along.  Some pieces of information that came her way were entirely too convenient.  He preyed on her isolation and desperation.
That said, I don’t believe the entire thing was Jones’ fabrication.  Why would Alan Scarpio gone along with that to the extent that he did?  How would he have gotten Yumiko’s cooperation to leave things like the smiley face clue if the whole thing was a cruel prank?  Where the fuck would he have found Theodore Spiro and gotten him to open a convenience store in the exact location of the Magician’s bar?  It doesn’t make any sense.
Carly successfully won RABBITS XI and saved the timeline from being doomed to entropy.  However, shit is still not right, as seen by the immediate beginning of RABBITS X (Theodore Spiro = The Door is Open) when usually there is some sort of downtime between sessions.  If there is a sequel I would hope to see Carly play the game on her own merits, perhaps in opposition to Jones and the “revolution” he's seeking.

RABBITS season 1 finale thoughts (SPOILERS)
There are so many people who did not enjoy the season 1 finale of RABBITS… And I just feel really confused because I thought that it was brilliant and everything really came nicely together.
I just want to discuss in detail what happened.
So at the end it was revealed that Jones basically made this all up.
BUT I think that all that happened, events that Carly experienced while looking for Yumiko, was actually real. When she managed to win The Game (the end point was finding Yumiko) she made a slip – the universe/reality was altered. These changes included the things that would “cover up” RABBITS itself and Jones’s presence in it. So the reality was changed in a manner that for everyone else it seemed that no game ever existed, that Jones was sick and made this all up, manipulating Carly and Yumiko.
Let’s see the story from Jones’s POV:
The fire in his hometown that happened/didn’t happen
His parents stay together
Jones plays VIII with Emily’s help
Emily’s death in 2007
Jones rebels against The Game, stops playing causing major errors in our dimension
Jones starts the revolution (Where’s The Future?), The Game becomes corrupt and dangerous, Jones helps other players
He encounters Yumiko and the following events lead him to Carly who was his point of convergence
Jones finally wins VIII by helping Carly win IX (?)
Jones disappears
That’s when we’re told the “altered” story that is real for everyone else but Carly and Jones:
Jones’s abusive family
Escapism to made-up realities
Drugs and overdose of his girlfriend Emily in 1998
Depression and institutions
MOONRISE – complex alternate reality game made up by Jones in 2008
Jones works for Gatewick Industries to test a LARP and uses their resources in his made-up game
The events that lead to Yumiko’s disappearance (Jones drugging her and kidnapping?)
Jones meets Carly and manipulates her making her believe in RABBITS (which is in fact his MOONRISE).
Two things however do not match which proves that the story told from Jones’s POV is real:
1. The MOONRISE symbol was there long ago and Carly’s older brother saw it
2. It is said that Jones hired actors to play alongside him – which would include The Magician, for example. Ok, it would work with The Magician, but Alan Scarpio who is rich and famous? How would Jones convince him to play along? Jones could have had something on Scarpio and blackmailed him, but with all the money and influence Scarpio has it’s hard to imagine that he would let Jones pull the strings.
I have several questions which were left unanswered for now:
1. Why did Jones start playing VIII in the first place? What would be his prize?
2. Jones driving the car in which Yumiko crossed the Canadian border was obviously made up (Yumiko was running from him after finding out he was Hazel) and was the altered reality's “cover up”. Who then was driving the car? Must have been someone Yumiko trusted, she was smiling at the camera. Or did this happen at all?
3. Can other participants and winners “jump” between dimensions – The Magician, Alan Scarpio?
4. If they can, does that mean that Gatewick Institute was created long ago or existed in different forms under different names and conducted the same experiments?
5. Is Gatewick somehow connected to those people/force/entity that controls The Game? Or is it just coincidence that their experiments resulted in other people having the ability to jump between dimensions?
5. What is it about Gazpromneft plant in Russia? (I’m Russian and it’s so hilarious that in every single Terry’s podcast there are MYSTERIOUS RUSSIAN PEOPLE. I am ready for the KGB to pop out at any moment because c’mon every Russian has a relative who served there, right?)
6. What is the connection between Jones and Byron Preiss and how does Preiss fit into the whole story?
7. How is Marigold connected to II and is it important at all?

GRAND UNIFYING PNWS/PRA THEORY
Strap the fuck in we are going on a quest.
Ok so does it ever piss you off how nobody in the PNWS shows ever acknowledges the events of the other shows at all, despite frequently referring to those shows by name? Me too, but actually no not anymore because I’ve finally figured out the definitive connection between the shows of PNWS.
Anyway so all three PNWS shows have introduced, to varying degrees, the concept of other dimensions. Rabbits is the most prominent example, but Tanis has things like the Breach and the star maps and time moving differently in the cabin and other stuff that points to Tanis being some kind of extradimensional portal. The Black Tapes also briefly touches on the idea of other worlds with the idea of the shadows stepping forward from the shadows and the like. That shared theme, plus the weird lack of crossover despite the shows sharing several characters, makes me suspect that we are dealing with not a shared universe, but three divergent versions of the same universe which connect up to two extra universes that don’t actually resemble our reality.
Universe A: The podcast network is run by the Pacific Northwest Stories radio station. Nic Silver actually knows how to use a computer, is a skeptic, and hosts a show called Tanis which is mostly fictional/speculative. Alex Regan hosts The Black Tapes, which is a real and true account of ghosts and demon stuff that actually happens. Only the demon stuff is real. Carly Parker does not exist, to the best of my knowledge. Alexander Scriabin tried to implode this universe with the Mysterium.
Universe B: The podcast network is run by the Pacific Northwest Stories radio station. Nic Silver cannot internet and hosts a show about himself running after the 100% real and true myth of Tanis. Alex Regan hosts The Black Tapes, which is a mostly speculative show about the field of paranormal research. Only the Tanis-related stuff is real. Carly Parker does not exist, to the best of my knowledge.
Universe C: The podcast network is run by the Public Radio Alliance radio station. Nic Silver hosts a podcast called Tanis, about a thing called Tanis that he definitely thinks is real but doesn’t actually exist according to anyone else. Alex Regan may or may not host the Black Tapes. Carly Parker hosts a show called Rabbits that is about 100% true things that happen. This universe is glitchy and unless Rabbits is being played, it will self-destruct.
Universe D: Full of weird animals and people who dig underground for the smallwater. This is a crossroads universe where other universes are always touching each other. Nothing makes any sense and time doesn’t work. Nic Silver met his fake wife here.
Universe E/Hell: All the monsters and demons are from this dimension, including Eld Fen, probably.
Tanis is a place where the veil is thin between B and D. When Nic entered the cabin, he was in D and spent 4 years there, which was less than 4 years in B time. All of the ‘Tanis clones’ are doppelganger demons that use D as a path to get to earth from E, as are the shadow people experienced by Alex A in the Black Tapes.
When Alex A and Nic A play the mysterium on The Black Tapes, it causes far-reaching effects across multiple universes which leads to the weird Tanis s2 finale shit happening in B, and the beginning of Rabbits 9 in C.
The man in the dark is Nic B’s name for the entity which Alex A refers to as Tall Paul, who is a minion of Eld Fen who travels from universe to universe. Eld Fen may also be Nic B’s name for the thing that Alex A has been calling Tiamat, since both of them are described as eldritch and both of them have horns. Either Eld Fen/Tiamat or Tall Paul is also the dragon voice guy mentioned by the Gatewick test subjects in C.
Nathaniel Carter, Thomas Warren and Alan Scarpio are very possibly alternate versions of each other. The Wardens might also be the same people as the Taskers, as it would make sense that people from D would be able to perceive glitches in other connected universes.
The satanist, child soul-selling nannies from TBT are former Gatewick test subjects whose minds were warped by seeing too much of Literally Hell. Simon Reese is like Carly and Jones, but more powerful due to all the Devil Stuff and able to consciously bend space and time in order to bilocate.
that concludes my TED talk.
