In the Klondike stampede, an estimated 100,000 people tried to reach the Klondike goldfields, of whom only around 30,000 to 40,000 eventually did. It formed the height of the Klondike gold rush from the summer of 1897 until the summer of 1898. It began on July 15, 1897 in San Francisco and was spurred further two days later in Seattle, when the first of the early prospectors returned from the Klondike, bringing with them large amounts of gold on the ships Excelsior and Portland.

Next Week's Tumblr Top 5 Will Surely Put Us All to Shame.
I love that Shane's response to hearing the next Top 5 is about 'ships is, "I'm gunning for the Lusitania". Because 1. history nerd, and 2. I keep FORGETTING HE'S A HISTORY NERD BECAUSE I SEE PROFESSOR MCNASTY AS AN ENTIRELY SEPARATE ENTITY.
In the spirit of the joke, here's my Top 5 Historic Ships:
5. The Balclutha - built in Glasgow in 1886, this three-masted full rigged ship carried cargo all around the world before finding her way to San Francisco under the care of the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park, where she is open to the public, sometimes for shanty sings. Yes, I've sung shanties on board this ship, because of course I have. This one's a sentimental choice, one of the few good things left about my hometown.
4. The Charles W. Morgan - the last wooden whaleship still afloat, built in New Bedford in 1841 and now a National Historic Landmark at the Mystic Seaport Museum. Kinda hard to miss when you come into the harbor and it's just the absolute epitome of New England salty sea-dog vibes. Also: blubber pots.
3. The USS Constitution - yeah, some people are going to say this is a real normie pick. But you gotta hand it to her, she's beloved for a reason. Built in 1797 in Boston, this 44-gun frigate was in service protecting the US for the better part of a century before being retired from service in 1881. And she's looked good the whole time. There's something special about seeing a ship this old fire off her cannons.
2. ORP Piorun - the other ships on this list are ships you can visit today; alas, this WWII N-class was scrapped in 1955, but its legend deserves to live on. This ship's Polish crew, powered by wodka and the fire of vengeance, had the absolute brass balls to chase down the Bismarck without waiting for reinforcements. You need to hear this tale told by someone slightly drunk and meme-poisoned, so here's LazerPig.
1. The Oseberg ship - excavated from a Norwegian burial mound in 1904, this ship was made somewhere around 800CE and buried sometime after 834 with a wide variety of grave goods that have told us a lot about Viking culture at that moment in time. There's nothing quite so sexy and absolutely terrifying as the curves on a Viking ship, let alone a Viking ship that has come back from the land of the dead, so this one's an easy number one on my list.

Brush up your sea-farin’ vocab and talk like a pirate for a day. Ahoy, yo-ho-ho, and avast ye matey! To port! To starboard! Bring a spring up on ‘er! Whatever that means.
Yar harrr! Ahoy there ye lily livered blaggards! It be Talk Like a Pirate Day, and that means it’s time for pillaging and the imbibing of rum!
Pirates have been all the rage in recent years and out of that particular fascination came an insane and completely pirate-oriented idea: that there should be a day dedicated to keeping the piratical language alive and, more importantly, the tradition of all things related to pirates.
So Talk Like a Pirate Day was invented. And now it’s time to celebrate with all of the pirate talk that can be mustered in one day!
History of Talk Like a Pirate Day
It was June 6, 1995, and a group of men were playing racquetball at Albany in Oregon. All throughout they were shouting encouragement to each other. On this particular day, for reasons unbeknownst to them, they started shouting piratical slang at each other. From there it just kind of took on a life of its own, and they realized by the end of the game that it was necessary that they establish a holiday to celebrate that encouraged the use of such a fine vernacular. The first thing they needed was a date, and it just so happened that the date selected was the birthday of his ex-wife.
For the next seven years they honored this holiday, in relative obscurity, until they happened upon the email address of one Dave Barry, a syndicated columnist and author of a great number of books. He also happened to be hilarious, like any good pirate should be. From there it’s all history, Dave Barry promoted the holiday, and it’s been one amazing year after another as people all over the country celebrate this auspicious holiday.
How to Celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day
Getting involved with this day is sure to be a LOAD of fun! Because it’s just a silly day, be sure to involve all of the pirate-like silliness that can be mustered. Try out some of these ideas for enjoying Talk Like a Pirate Day:
Talk Like a Pirate
Ahoy, Matey! This obvious application of the celebration might be a little more difficult than one might think. Because, who actually knows what pirates sound like when they talk?! Some phrases are more commonly known, like “pillage” or “landlubber”. But others are a little harder to understand. Here’s some vocabulary and lingo to help get novice pirate talkers started:
“Son of a Biscuit Eater”. This is what pirates might call someone they don’t like, the idea being that a biscuit eater is refined and, well, not a pirate.
“All Hand Hoy!” Upon hearing this, everyone needs to get on deck to help out.
“Bring a Spring Upon ‘er”. A phrase meaning to turn the ship in another direction.
“Grog Blossom”. A person who has a red nose because they drink too much alcohol (probably rum).
Read Some Pirate Tales
Even people who are land-dwellers can certainly use their imaginations to read about different pirates and their escapades. From classic to modern, stories about pirates are bound to be exciting and adventurous! Surely reading some books about pirates will help to build up that Talk Like a Pirate Day vocabulary.

Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. The Scottish author brought pirates to life in 1881 with his talk of buccaneers and buried gold.
Peter Pan by JM Barrie. Infused with run-ins with Captain Hook, the original Peter Pan stories from 1904 are much darker than the Disney animated remake films.

Day 33
September 4, 2022
Day trip to San Francisco! Finally got our van back; we had been using a substitute one with a half-broken broken AC and speakers for the past week. But now we’ve got our old one back, and the side door now opens from the outside. Nice. We left at 8:00, made a pit stop at a coffee place, and arrived at around 10:00. Parking costs almost $50. Oof. At least we’re splitting the costs. We arrived in the touristy area and popped in a few shops on the way to the pier.
We saw some sea lions at Pier 39:

We walked a bit further down the pier, and got a clear view of Alcatraz:
Our group split in two so we could see some boats for free (someone had a National Park pass). I think this was at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. I was in the second group, so we visited another souvenir shop and got lunch while we waited. I bought a San Francisco patch. Our half of the group then explored the boats:
We walked a couple miles and arrived at the Palace of Fine Arts:
The Palace of Fine Arts is a monumental structure located in the Marina District of San Francisco, California, originally constructed for the 1915 Panama–Pacific International Exposition to exhibit works of art. Completely rebuilt from 1964 to 1974, it is the only structure from the exposition that survives on site.
We eventually got back to the van at around 17:00. We struggled to get it out of the parking space and blocked traffic in the lot for a few minutes. A collection of several families assembled to watch. Pretty sure we saw a guy get out of his car just to stare at us. Our driver had probably made a 10-point turn by the time we were out...
We drove over the Golden Gate Bridge (no good photos unfortunately); I didn't realize until today that it is red, not yellow. Then it was time to head back. We made a bathroom break at a gas station (second time in the past month that I've been very glad to have waterproof shoes in the bathroom) and returned to the road. We drove through some smoke on the way back; this was probably the most direct evidence of wildfire I've seen here. Fortunately the fire didn't seem to be anywhere near us. Got back to campus at about 8:30 and made myself dinner. Probably going to call it quits for tonight. Might edit and post the high-quality photos another day.

It is no doubt that San Francisco has one of the most expensive house markets in the country. According to the state’s Department of Housing and Community Development, the city has the slowest jurisdiction when it comes to construction of new house projects. For example, other cities like Austin has approved more than 10,000 units while Seattle has approved more than 9,000 units compared to only around 3,000 units of San Francisco. The goal of the review is to determine the root cause of the problem and remove the barriers to approval and construction. This way, more affordable houses will be available to the people and this will eventually solve social issues like homelessness.
