It takes Callum a surprisingly short amount of time to learn to reach for Rayla when he wakes. It was the three weeks on the road with her, he reasons, the first of which he spent paranoidly making sure she hadn't run off with Zym's egg while he and Ezran slept, but it grew into something more than that, something more comforting, and not even a week later, he would wake, uncomfortable and on edge, find her lying an arm's length away, and find his nerves settled by the sound of her breathing the rise and fall of her shoulders in her sleep.

No, it's probably not healthy, but neither was running away to end a war, and if it means a peaceful night, then who cares? It's how he convinces Opeli let them room together when they get home. It's how he reminds himself that the war is over, and that he and she are both safe.

It's not so easy, these days. The ground is hard and his back aches and the fire is always out when he wakes in the middle of night. His fingers scramble against the dirt, searching for a hand that isn't there, and it always takes him a minute longer than it should to remember how to breathe.

Callum heaves a ragged sigh, wondering how it was so easy to form a habit that's so hard to break.
