It’s at the times between recording scenes where you really get a glimpse at your lover.

His sweat stained hair and tear stained cheeks from a rather intense scene never get old. You were feeling rather fond as he made his way over to you, falling into your director’s chair and heaving a heavy breath. The only one other than you allowed to sit in it.

For a mere moment, you both simply look at each other. You guys were on break so a few conversation topics come to mind, it wasn’t often you guys got to speak as lovers rather than coworkers during work. And while they’re all things you’d like to talk to Scaramouche about, you realize you don’t need to force conversation with him.

There’s a hue of weariness that shows in Scara’s eyes, but you can tell that he’s happy. He’s doing what he’s been striving to do for all his years at university, so of course he is.

You search his dark eyes for his thoughts, too. When your eyes meet Scara’s he let’s out a tired smile.

“I missed you,” he easily says. The words come out easier than they would’ve years ago.

Your heart skips a beat, even years later.

“How? We’ve been working together all day,” you say.

“Do I need a reason to miss the person I love?” Scara scoffs, looking away from you to study the script he brought with him.

It isn’t the first time Scaramouche had told you that he loves you, but it’s never stopped holding the same weight it did the first time he’d ever said it.

It’s a rare type of love. The kind that exists so rarely for people in this industry and that lead lives similar to your guys’.

His loves makes you feel alive everyday. And Scara should know it, you should tell him more often—even if it’s rather dramatic for midday on set for their most recent project. It’s something you’d bring up at night that you two could laugh about in bed. Even if it catches Scara off guard.

But Scaramouche’s love caught you off guard, too, and every second you got the privilege to spend with him was a gift.

And as you stare at him, fiddling with the sleeves of his costume and eyebrows scrunched as he mouths his lines, you couldn’t help but feel your heart grow heavy.

“I suppose you don’t,” you reply, a minute too late, but Scara still chuckles at your response as he tosses the script aside.

“What? You’re not going to say it back?” he teases, “And I thought I was the emotionally constipated one.”

“Oh, fuck off,” you mutter, hitting him on the shoulder, “I love you, too. I guess.”

“Archons, you’re worse than me.”

“No, you were much worse when we were younger!”

“It was hot and mysterious when I did it.”

“Uh huh, just go back to set I’m sick of you.”

“Weird way to say you agree but okay.”

“Go!”

✧ scaramouche is complicated and i think we can agree on that

✧ i think that he wouldn't enjoy physical affection all that much, especially in front of other people - he just doesn't like being touched right before other people

✧ yet, he is very aware of how much you enjoy just snuggling up to his side or randomly grabbing his hands and play with them, so that's that he thinks. but he knew already before your relationship, so it's no surprise to him and he deals with it in his own way

✧ guessing that you two only became a thing when you probably were also a part of the fatui, he believes that you two should keep apart business and personal life apart. in his eyes, both can't coexist and would just ruin everything

✧ the fact that he opened his, well, nonexistent heart to someone in all those years is already a great feat for him and he remarks you as someone odd because who would try willingly to approach him?

✧ as scaramouche, someone who holds much power as a harbinger, he wants to keep your display of affection in private - first of all, for your own good, and second of all, because he has a reputation to uphold

✧ what would it look like if you always hugged him and even worse, if one of the other harbingers saw? not that he cared much for their opinion, but he prefers to keep to himself and that's also what he asks from you

✧ while in public, people might not even guess you're a couple, but the moment the door to your room closes he can't help himself but find himself hugging you and even enjoying the closeness and warmth you radiate when your hands gently run through his hair

✧ don't be surprised at the balladeer for suddenly clinging onto you but still keeping up the same attitude as he had during the day - he just doesn't like being looked down upon in a metaphorical way, so he prefers you to not question his actions and just enjoy it

✧ you possess what he lacks and yearns for, a beating heart and the warmth of an actual living body, so oftentimes he might subconsciously even become the lower spoon and place his head right above where your heart is, silently counting the beats in his head as he thinks of nothing for a while (if you try and speak to him while he does that, it might take a few seconds longer for him to reply, that's how immersed he is)

✧ he isn't too prone on being the big spoon, but he enjoys holding you in his arms just as much - he actually believes that he is not that good in holding you close to him because he has no body warmth and he has no idea how to properly hug someone (unless he actually tried to keep you in a chokehold)

✧ however, if he ever happens to be in a good mood (which is already something to behold), he might ask you to walk him and he might even be in a good enough mood for you to hug him if he's sure nobody can see (though he'd still mutter curses under his breath, calling you an idiot for your constant need of physical affection)

✧ kisses are,,, something he does not understand. why do people press their lips together? he literally questioned right infront of you how sanitary that is and when you had the audacity to laugh he was just confused

✧ it might take him a while to open up to actual kisses, so it's rather a gentle kiss on his cheek or ontop of his head while you're hugging him

✧ that's also when he learnt that kisses did not have to be on the lips to carry meaning

✧ he'd probably even like to kiss your eyelids gently, mainly because he enjoys the way your eyelashes flutter shut in surprise or how flushed you become when he returns to his original position with a shit eating grin on his face

✧ also, he would probably like to link your pinkies together if you're alone. the first time he did it he denied it and called you delusional for it, but the second time it happened he just allowed you to tease him about it for the time being

✧ as long as all of this stays between the safety your four walls, it doesn't really matter to him. all he's really scared of is being betrayed again, let it be you passing away or suddenly leaving him behind

✧ the fact that you managed to break down his walls like that was enough for him to see you as worthy of his time and attention, so even if he initially dislikes any hugging, kissing or handholding, he is willing to do it for you as long as you're here with him

Y/N: I loved being in the band, I would never trade that experience for the world but Billy… fuck yeah he was a real fucking asshole.

You were sitting on the floral duvet that covered the bed you shared with Warren on his boat. Somehow he had convinced you to move out of the dingy old place that was the house in Laurel Canyon to his slightly cramped houseboat… it was an easy yes. You and Warren were always a will they won’t they kind of situation until after the first tour. That tour changed everything and left you with one of the best men in the world as your boyfriend.

Currently you were working on getting some finishing touches done to an array of lyrics that had evolved into a song over the course of the past couple of weeks. Ever since you picked up your first guitar the words that wove themselves into songs had quickly followed. Not that you ever showed anyone your little creations.

That was until Warren found a few of your songwriting journals when you were unpacking boxes. And let’s just say he was incredibly excited. He eagerly became the first person to hear every single one of your new creations.

So later that night as he finished listening to the most recent piece of your little side gig, Warren grants you a huge smile before carefully taking off your guitar strap and giving you a huge hug, followed by a rather passionate kiss.

“I’m assuming you liked it then.”

“Oh you have no idea, baby.”

“Well good cause that one was written about you.”

“I will gladly be your muse for the rest of my days.”

“Aww stop it you big sap.” You say as you lightly slap his shoulder before giving him a quick peck and taking another swing of your beer.

“I think I should be calling you the sap since you wrote a song about me.”

“Most of my songs are about you.”

“You are only further proving my point.” You snorted as you settled into his arms and felt him pull you tighter against his chest as a soft breeze blew over the boat.

Warren: Y/N is a genius. She’s one of those incredibly talented people that just has that spark, you know.

You took a deep calming breath as you nervously fiddled with one of the corners of the paper where your song was carefully printed out. It was a love ballad but with obvious rock and roll influences, you had even tried to sneak in a few things you had noticed from the array of punk records you had started to collect.

It felt as if you were back in school, about to give one of those presentations that you felt would end the world if you ended up messing up. Billy wasn’t known for being one who listens to anyone other than Daisy, which was also a rare occurrence. He was bullheaded and controlling about every little detail on the album. So this was like trying to talk to a brick wall, but you were still determined to at least try.

At the sound of Billy walking into the recording room you nervously stood up and eyed Warren who gave you a reassuring thumbs up.

“Hey Billy.”

“Oh hey Y/N.”

“I was wondering if I could talk to you…”

“If this is about your bass lines, I already told you that you can change them if you want for the riff.”

“Uh no this is about well this.” You kind of shoved the paper into Billy’s hands and his eyebrows raised as he quickly skimmed over the lyrics and notes.

“What the hell is this?”

“Well since I know you were looking for something extra for the album I thought I would suggest this.”

“Yeah well, uh it’s not what we need. And I finished up a song with Dai-”

“Yeah it’s fine Billy. Whatever, I’ll start setting up.” Billy just nodded at you before walking off to the side to talk to Graham. Warren just looked at you and titled his head, you just shrugged. That was when you realized you had never really seen Warren truly angry. It was as if a secret rage suddenly brimmed in his eyes. You quickly made your way over to your boyfriend and gave him a hug.

“Hey look it’s fucking whatever okay, don’t worry about it.”

“That song was amazing mi amor, it deserves to be on the album.”

“You don’t think, I think that too.”

“I am so sorry mi amor.”

“Thanks Warren.”

“Do you want me to punch him?”

“Nah, better not cause more trouble than it’s worth.”

“Okay fuck him then.”

“Yeah fuck him.”

Warren: Y/N deserved to have that song on the album. I’m not just saying that because she’s my wife, I’m saying that because that song was a chart topper. And that is what it became, even without the addition of Daisy and Billy singing it.

Y/N: So after the band broke up, Warren convinced me to send the song around to some of my producer friends I had made through Teddy. After that it kind of blew up.

Warren: Honestly I couldn’t be more proud of what Y/N has built. I mean to be part of 2 of the most popular bands in the world has got to be some kind of record.

You let out a laugh at Warren’s choice of words as you enveloped his hand with yours as the camera zoomed out to allow you into frame.

Y/N: It was kind of crazy that people actually wanted to listen to my music. So yeah I formed a little band with a few acquaintances and I worked out of London for a few months. Our first single, the song I wrote for Warren, was an instant hit. After a few weeks the album came out and well I was suddenly catapulted to fame once again.

Daisy: Y/N deserved everything she ended up doing. We’ve even done a few features on each other’s albums.

Y/N: So yeah I ended up with my own band, the best husband in the world and two bundles of absolute joy. And I owe it all to that song. Innervated Love will always be one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written.

Warren: You are still such a sap.

Y/N: Oh you love it.

Warren: Of course I do.

picturing this as the sequel to this prompt fill from @this-was-a-terrible-idea (ao3 link if you prefer) but it should stand on its own~

Jason is not nervous, and screw anyone who suggests otherwise. This is far from his first fancy party and, unfortunately, far from his last, either. It's not even his first fancy party as a Wayne---and before he went and got himself blown up, he'd gotten pretty fucking good at them, at least if you asked him.

Not that he's going to this party as a Wayne. Just... with a Wayne. Even if said Wayne still called himself Grayson.

The point is. Jason knows what he's doing. He knows how to be charming, and just the right amount of roguish to make the high society folks titter instead of clutch their pearls. He knows how to walk, and talk, and eat, and even dance. (Much as he'd wrinkled his nose when Alfred first suggested the lessons.)

It is, he'll admit, a little different going with Dick as like---a date, not because they both just happened to be connected to the same man.

Good different, though.

Means he doesn't have to hide the way he stares, when he gets an eyeful of Dick wrapped in a blue-and-black tux, perfectly tailored to the lines of his body. The display isn't helped, or is helped too much, by the way he's lounging against one of Jason's favorite sportscars. He must've borrowed it (or "borrowed" it) from Bruce.

Dick catches his eye and grins, like the cat who got the canary. Jason whistles obnoxiously, just to pretend he's not half as flustered as he feels.

"Not so bad yourself, handsome," Dick says, dragging his own gaze over Jason's body.

Jason shivers, a blush stinging the back of his neck. "Keep lookin' at me like that, Dickface, an' I don't think we're gonna make it t' the party."

"Well. It'd be a shame to waste all your hard work, little wing," Dick says, and this time, when he looks Jason over, his gaze lingers. He feels warm in the chilly night air, like he's wearing a sweater in summer.

Before he can think of something else to say---or maybe just grab the tie around Dick's neck and haul him up the stairs to Jason's apartment---Dick is opening the door for him, inviting him into the passenger seat of his sports car.

Jason slides in, rather than embarrass himself, or ruin their plans for the evening.

Dick slips gracefully into the driver's seat; reaching out and taking Jason's hand as soon as they're on the road. For once, the drive is absent of 80s power ballads, disco, and musical numbers. Jason is grateful for the peace. It gives him time to compose himself. This is important. He wants to do it right. For Dick.

The drive takes less time than Jason expected, even with Dick---for probably the first time in his fucking life---obeying all traffic laws. Before Jason knows it, Dick's hand is untangling from his as they exit the car. Dick passes the keys along with a smile and an extravagant tip, shoulder brushing Jason's arm when he comes to stand with him.

"You good?" he asks, under his breath.

"Peachy. Just tryin' to remember how I let you convince me to walk into a viper pit."

That gets a laugh from Dick---though he suppresses it quickly. "You can hold my hand, if it makes you feel safer," he offers.

"Baby," Jason says, "I always wanna hold your hand." But this time, he puts his hand on the small of Dick's back, smiling when Dick wraps his arm around Jason's waist in turn.

"Stop, you're going to make me blush," Dick says. Despite the sarcasm, his ears look pinker than usual.

"Well, can't have that," Jason says, and he's grinning now. "I'm the only one who gets to see you blush."

Dick laughs again, and this time, he doesn't bother suppressing it, despite the way it turns a few heads as they walk in the door. Dick ignores them, looking up at Jason instead. "You're a menace," he says, fondly.

"Just don't forget, bringing me here was your idea," Jason reminds.

"Oh, I know," Dick says. He stops them, just before coat check-in, and rises onto his toes. His lips brush the corner of Jason's mouth. "Still think it was one of my best."

There's no stopping the blush that blooms across his cheeks. "Night's still young," he says, proud when it comes out at least mostly even.

Dick looks at him through half-closed eyes, smile still on his face. "I could never regret a night spent with you, Jason."

Scaramouche wasn't used to soft, loving touches, he would often flinch at your gentleness, moving away before stopping as he noticed you falter, thinking that your affections weren't welcomed, at that he would grow closer once more, turning his head away and using his large hat to conceal his expression.

That's when you continued, soft caresses to his hair and cheeks, loving oh so loving words that only he was allowed to hear, praises that would make even Gods drop to their knees in weakness and adoration. The Balladeer could only try and fail to hide his reddening face and neck under his hat. You let him have it his way, for a bit.

You'd both been sitting on the ground, resting under the shade of a tree as per your request since he oh so kindly refused to let you take a break from the scorching sun under his hat. It had only been a few minutes since you moved to sit atop his lap, facing him as you started an impromptu affection session, as regular the Harbinger hid himself under his hat, that is until you snatched it and placed it on the grass besides him. The jellyfish cut boy was left a sputtering mess and you cut down his incoming embarrassed tantrum by kissing his lips. It was a short peck but as you pulled away you saw him chase after your lips so you dipped in once more, this time a deeper kiss, slow and passionate, threatening to steal his breath away despite his lack of need for oxygen.

It was only when you heard a small, trembling whine slip past his lips that you pulled away, taking a moment to catch your own breath you admire the mess you quickly made out of the 6th. When you saw his eyes come back to focus on your being you dove back for another kiss, only this time you aimed at his jawline, you heard Scaramouche's breath hitch as you lowered a trail of kisses down to his nonexistent pulse, he flinched, tensed and then shivered as you licked the zone before biting it and finally sucking on it, his eyes fluttered closed as he leaned back on the tree and moved his head up to allow you more space, space which you greedily took as you littered his neck in love bites and hickeys, all where you knew he wouldn't be able to hide them. You always enjoyed the way the Fatui would stare at any and all marks you left on him, even Harbingers would whisper amongst eachother. You were snapped back to reality when you heard another whine come from him, then you noticed his heavy breathing, almost panting, the way he let out a mix between breathy and pleased sighs and whines that bordered a tad bit too close on moans.

You ran your hands across his indigo locks, lowering them to the back of his neck, then to his spine and finally you rested them on his waist, keeping a firm grip of them as you gave him an ocassional squeeze.

This continued on for a coulple of minutes, The Balladeer growing more and more restless by the second, his breathy sighs now full on moans and his whines and whimpers now pleas. One particular time that he squirmed you ended up sitting right on his groin, halting for just a second as you felt his clothed erection poke you. Letting out a small chuckle you bit down harsh enough to draw blood and he screamed, not in pain, but in pleasure, to make it worse for the Harbinger you had decided to start slowly but deeply grinding on his hard on, thing that was driving him insane as it was nowhere near enough to make him reach his peak.

Without a warning you pulled away from his neck with a wet, loud pop, you gave a few more grinds, making sure they were deeper, quicker, that they drove him to the edge and just as he was about to fall into the pleasure he'd been so desperately chasing, you stood up grabbing his hat and putting it back where it belonged on his head. The Balladeer had his eyes closed still, humping the air for a coulple of seconds before realizing and opening his eyes only to see you grabbing your stuff and getting ready to continue your travels with him.

"H-Huh? Hey w-where do you think you're going?!" Scaramouche asked with an equally embarrassed, irritated and desperate tone, "Finish what you started!"

You could only look back at him and giggle, "I didn't start anything, you did! Besides we're on a time crunch~!"

The Balladeer spent the rest of the mission on a worse mood than ever but it was all worth it for as soon as you two got back home, back to his private quarters, he crumbled, begging you with tears in his eyes as he humped you like a bitch in heat. He insisted that he needed you, he prayed that you finally had mercy on him, that he'd worship you if you just let him finish this one time.

And you knew he would, so you did.

this was so cute how scara goes from being so mean to sweet ik he actually cares abt ppl but loves to hide it,, i took a little bit of a diff approach with this bc i tried so many ideas before that didn't work so instead of the reader just being sick they're kinda freezing too lol but i hope u like it in the end, thank u sm for requesting this! if this wasn't to your liking you can always request again!

synopsis: you and your boss scara get trapped in a snow storm and he helps you while you're really cold and sick

harsh winds singing a desperate chorus as it whirled around you, it claimed all the land in white. bounding everyone to their homes, unlucky for you, you were caught out in the storm. in other circumstances, this sight would have been beautiful to you as all of snezhnaya was, if only you weren't walking in the middle of it. you'd say you were happy when a small wooden hut appeared, it didn't look warm from the outside but it was shelter, except you had to go in with your boss.

scaramouche slammed the wooden door to the hut, blocking most of the blundering storm outside. the cabin was rotten down, boards coroading away, who ever lived here hadn't been around in probabaly years. it was stopping most of the wind, but the freezing tempature was still seeping in. he grimmaced at the situation, he'd been seperated from the rest of the fatui agents while out carrying a mission for the tsaritsa, simply on their way to catch debt from clients. this was only a minor setback, but a damn awful one. who knows how long he'd be stuck here. especially stuck with you.

you were in a corner of the house, curled into yourself to retain warmth. your thick black coat was keeping some sort of coziness but you were only human and some cloth could only do so much. damn your immune system, you'd only been curled up in here for a couple of minutes and were already sneezing uncontrollably, nose tingling and your skin in a bitter pain because of the frost. "look at you cowering away." your boss crossed his arms, glaring down at you. "we're stuck in this snow storm because of you giving us the wrong direactions. who even allowed you to join the fatui? you're obviously unfit to serve the tsarista." you who fed at his frigid words. "i bet it was that bobbleheaded childe, huh? pathetic." you knew never to show weakness infront of him, the balladeer was known to be so cruel to those who showed fear. yet in this snow storm, you couldn't care to even respond to him or say sorry about your incompetence. you swore if you stayed like this, you'd freeze over into a popsicle.

"…i'm so damn cold." you mumbled. scara pondered you with a scouring look. "oh, you're cold? well you're in snezhnaya its going to be a little chilly" his stupid sarcasm was not what you needed. you hands sting through your gloves, throat itchy and eyes watering. you tried to fight back the tears, you could not cry in front of him no matter how sick and cold you were. his eyes widened watching you shudder in the corner. he shuffled around a bit, looking to you and fro, cheeks a little flush. he hadn't expect you to seriously cry. he sighed, watching his breath swirl the air then trugded over to you.

with his hand nearing your face, you flinched at it thinking he was going to reprimand you for being so weak. yet he simply was pressing the back of his hand to your forehead, you were icy to the touch, eyes puffy and red. a tear rolled down your cheek as you sniffled, he took his thumb and wiped it away with a pout on his lip. "don't cry..." he mumbled. you weren't really sad just your body reacting to the uncomfortable reality you were in. "let me see your hand…" you lifted you arm to him and he pulled one of your gloves off, revealing your discolored fingers, a sign of hyperthermia.

the balladeer was no mother goose, he had no nurturing bone in his body. if he wanted to, he'd leave you here to freeze and would carry out the rest of his mission without batting an eye. instead, he gloved your hand again and held them between his. it wouldn't do him any good to let you die, he supposed. he couldn't warm you up much himself considering his...condition, he knew you were going to catch an even worse cold if he didn't do anything. so, he did the unthinkable. he sat against the wall, pulling you towards him by the waist, you were between his legs, and he curled you into his chest. it wasn't a lot of warmth, but it was enough. it was reassuring that you would be okay, you're allergies were getting to you but atleast you weren't alone in this storm.

in other circumstances, being coddled in your boss' arms would make you vomit at the thought but he was suprsingly cozy. "…tell anyone about this and i'll let you freeze in the lake." scaramouche pulled you tighter to his chest trying to get you warmer. "i'm only doing this because if you die i wont hear the end of it." "…of course, balladeer." you held back a little giggle. "i wouldn't dream of it"

maybe the balladeer was more than he seemed. maybe he cared underneath his empty heartless shell. don't tell anyone though, what happens at the hut, stays at the hut.

my ranking of golden age that nobody asked for:

𝟏. alley oop — it’s the most hype song on the album so you know it’s going to be my top song, it’s exactly what i’ve been waiting for since nct 2023 was announced. a super hype song with an incredible rap line, but let’s also not ignore the vocals because yuta and jisung’s vocal lines are so heavenly! every member snapped in this, even winwin with his teeny tiny lines. this is going to be my anthem when i walk to class everyday, it’s incredibly motivating

𝟐. pado — sm really know what they’re doing putting xiaojun and haechan in the same unit again, their vocal chemistry is seriously unmatched. and the unit as a whole is probably one of my favourite u combinations because everyone’s voice (raps and vocals combined) sounds so perfect bouncing off each other. and the song itself is so fun and sexy, it actually surprised me. and idk how to explain this but the trumpets?? were so sensually teasing which i feel reflects the lyrics and the song as a whole, ughhhh i love it so much!

𝟑. the bat — i (s)creamed when i saw the videos from nct nation. it opens with them telling me to inhale, exhale but the jokes on me because i lose the ability to breathe with this song. i don’t even know what it’s about, wtf is bats on wheels lmao but i don’t care i’m still jamming hard to this song. also, the vocal trio of taeil, yuta and jungwoo is insane, and hendery and jeno’s rap?? hello??

𝟒. interlude: oasis — listening to this in the shower lead me to having an out of this world experience lmao it’s so heavenly and quite the nostalgic song, it reminds me of something that i can’t quite name. but at the same time, it’s a new and refreshing vibe that i’ve never heard from nct before, but i love it anyway. i just wish the song was longer

𝟓. call d — when it comes to tenyong duo, i don’t think anything can ever top baby don’t stop but call d is such a chill and fun song, and the instrumental breaks did surprise me. it’s not my fave on the album but i do love how the song is both fun and sensual. also ten’s rap and taeyong’s vocals?? they are so versatile

𝟔. baggy jeans — i’ll be honest, i’m not a fan of the chorus however! the rest of the song is so good! it’s so nice to see t7s unit back together again after 7 years. it’s one of the most catchy songs on the album which is great if you like the catchy parts. but for me, i’d rather have a different song on repeat. but the low, deep vocal ranges? jaehyun and mark really surprised me. i like the last third of the song more than the rest of the song, and getting through the first part feels like a chore

𝟕. not your fault — nct ballads usually linger towards the bottom of my playlists but don’t get me wrong, i do love them. i just don’t listen to them a lot. the lyrics are so sweet and gentle, i’m definitely going to listen to it when i need a pick me up because the message is so beautiful and intimate. and the vocals were so amazing, renjun really shined through

𝟖. kangaroo — i didn’t like this one at first but it grew on me after a few listens. the lyrics have a cute, fun meaning but if you squint enough, they’re a little dirty? did anyone else notice it, or was it just me and my filthy mind lol? this song is totally the song to listen to on a summer roadtrip with the windows down, and it honestly felt like a nct dream song rather than nct u, but it was fun regardless

𝟗. golden age — i don’t want to be one of those entitled nctzen but i really did expect a full group song with the same vibes of black on black/resonance throughout the song, but golden age is like a hybrid of black on black/resonance and beautiful. it really does enhance all of members’ qualities by allowing them to shine with their individual lines, be them vocal or rap. it’s such a feel good song, but it did give me whiplash lol

𝟏𝟎. that’s not fair — this song was going great at first but something about the chorus was very....idk how to explain it, i just didn’t like it. i did enjoy the dark, sinister feeling. it gives you the same vibe you’d get watching something scary. i know it’ll grow on me because every nct song does eventually. but there needs to be a song at the bottom of the list and this one fits the shoe which is a shame because i loved it at first

it’s time for my top 36 as of march. keep in mind that this year is super strong (rivalling my beloved 2016 in terms of song quality) and my top 10 has 16 songs in it. they also change placements depending on my mood

1. norway - i got chills the first time i’ve listened to this song and i get them every singe time i push play on it. pure art, so atmospheric, magical, the mixture of rock and folk with gunnhild’s godly vocals and amazing lyrics IN NORWEGIAN i am just beyond in love with this song IT WAS MADE FOR MY TASTE

2. estonia - it was the first song i listened to form the eesti laul line up and i just knew nothing was gonna beat it for me. it’s just so fun, with funny lyrics and a great folk-ish instrumental. crazy party of this year for me

3. the netherlands- gabber core on my esc?????? no way i lived to see this day. i am absolutely in love with this song- the music the visuals and the touching story of this song - instant hit. europapa has infected my brain permanently. joost was right 12 points to the netherlands

4. slovenia - this just so powerful, i love the siren core aesthetic and sound of this song. raivens voice is hypnotising like of a siren, you can’t help but get immersed in it

5. switzerland - it took a while to fully kick in but i absolutely love it now. the genre mix was a little bit confusing at first but now i’m just amazed at this combination of dnb opera pop alternative and rap - and the fact that it actually works together

6. belgium - they’re back to their dark pop era and IM GLAD. the outro had me on my knees, it’ll be so big during the live

7. lithuania - the 20s are lithuanias golden age, they are finally not afraid of sending their own language and they’re doing it with class. luktelk is a banger we deserved, modern, addicting. i hope for a top 10 for lithuania

8. italy - E LA CUMBIA DELLA NOIA💃💃 a true mediterranean banger, with amazing lyrics an overall full package, angelina is super charismatic, she’s a breath of fresh air for italy for sure

9. portugal - it wasn’t even my winner of fdc but i just fell in love with this after seeing that performance. it’s so elegant, calm, the lyrics are truly moving, everything in both the song and the fdc performance is so well thought out. some people will say it’s just another portuguese ballad but i think it stands out with its grace amongst the others

10. greece - it’s pop but an experimental one, mixing reggaeton maybe some hyperpop elements even? zari is greek to its core and while being very ethnic it’s also innovative and fresh. i constantly find myself humming this song. i can see it doing really well or finishing in bottom 5 - everything depends on the staging. but i love it i hope greece won’t be afraid to continue this more experimental route

11. ireland - my alternative heart is so happy to see a song and a performer like this on esc. you either live doomsday blue or hate it - i loved it form the first listen. it’s dark alluring enigmatic angry - an experience overall

12. spain - ever since it won benidorm my brain just randomly goes ZORRA‼️ ZORRA ‼️ZORRA ‼️in the middle of the day. it’s not even a guilty pleasure it’s just pure pleasure. i love how unapologetic this song is, the message of it, pure fun and celebration

13. ukraine - i absolutely love it as i do with almost every ukrainian entry although i have to admit it grew off me a little bit. it’s still a contender for the win in may and i wouldn’t be mad tbh. it’s a well made, powerful entry, ukraine always delivers

14. croatia - same like with the previous one it grew off me a little bit but it’s still a banger. this is croatia’s best shot at getting a top10 result and i wish them all the best. it’s pure fun and craziness

15. serbia - this year lacks ballads sm, so serbia (and portugal) have the chance to stand out bringing a cool down in between the chaos. ramonda is calm and reflective and so beautiful evoking all the right emotions. it feels very intimate even on a huge stage. i love meaning of the lyrics

16. sweden - is it a basic pop song? yes? did it also brought me to my knees with this beat and the staging? also yes. like i’m the biggest sweden hater but omg i just can’t help but bang to this song. it’s addicting. the norwegian twins have a pass from me

17. san marino - the funniest thing of this nf season. this not as good as arcadia but it’s still megara with their original style and a great vibe. if san marino fails to qualify with this then idk really.

18. armenia - ITS SO CUTE. it puts a smile on my face fr. ethnic banger through and through kind reminds me of trenuletul in a way (also there’s this polish party song “prawy do lewego” and idk if it’s just me but they have such similar vibes, i would absolutely go drunk dancing to “jako”)

19. denmark - idk i think i just have to have this one very basic song that i like for some reason. this year it’s sand. it’s really pleasing for some reason. nothing special as i said but i like it

20. georgia - your token ethnic girl pop. and that’s exactly it, it is a good song in this particular genre. and for this exact reason i can’t rank it higher. it’s good enough for me to put it here. still i am hoping for a q firm grorgia like let’s be real they deserve it more than anyone (with latvia ofc)

21. finland - camp. just camp. some people say that you either love or hate it but really i think it’s just fine. it doesn’t throw me off with its weirdness but it doesn’t excite me in any way. it’s just a weird little song in the middle of my ranking. but we’ll see if europe thinks it’s too much or exactly what we need. i can see it nqing

22. latvia - it was their best shot at q (although i still kinda mourn “kur?” it was such a nice song) but idk if they’ll manage to do that. it’s a strong powerful entry, but it can get a little lost in this years mix. dons is an amazing vocalis and if we had juries in the semis i know they would appreciate this song but with current system i’m not so sure

23. france - another ok song. i don’t really like the yelling ballad type but i have to admit this is well made. i’m still hoping for the revamp

24. poland - we had better options but this is also fine. an ok pop song, that’s it

25. australia - it’s extremely dated, it gives 2016. but it kinda started growing on me???? i love the usage of the aboriginal instruments and language it’s something original and i’m here for that.

26. moldova - again it’s fine it’s ok. but it doesn’t stand out much. moldova didn’t have better options (expept tudor bumbac) but it’s a let down compared to previous years

27. uk - i had such high hopes looking at the names involved in this song but ultimately it’s a let down. i’d does nothing for me. it’s well made once again but it leaves with zero emotions. comes and goes. kinda sad that they brought such a big name and yet failed to bring an engaging song

28. austria - this is so cringy. girlie is telling me that we will rave and then pulls out the most 2002 eurodance drop known to humankind?????? i mean it’s a swedish reject and it shows. in a way it is fun but more because it’s funny. idk i don’t hate it i just have a beef with it

29. azerbaijan - i’m very happy to hear the azeri language finally debut on esc. but the song is fine at best and bland at worst.

30. czechia - i know there will be a revamp but i’m judging the current version. this saddens and a lot. aiko has so much potential and this song fails to showcase it. it’s very american pop rock esque but kinda on a budget. i wanted to se aiko on esc but not like this :((

31. malta - a few revamps too many. nothing special really, average girl pop.

32. germany - this sounds like a last place i’m sorry😭😭 they’re asking for to atp. the guy is a good vocalist but this song is stuck in 2014

33. cyprus - this is just lazy. when will the cypriot hod learn that by doing the same thing over and over again they won’t replicate their 2018 succès. that was a one time thing and buying more songs form sweden and giving them to people with vague connections to the county won’t do them any good.

34. albania - they just sabotaged themselves with this revamp. it wasn’t a particularly good song before but the english language killed any originality it had left

35. luxembourg - this is just really unfortunate. coming back after 30 years with not even a swedish reject but singing dug up from a swedish dumpster? kinda sad for them but that’s what you get for rejecting your artists ogriginal songs in favour for shwdish bought ones

36. iceland - what i a travel agency advertisement is this? it’s not even about bashar loosing, this song is just bad. the only one this year i can use that word for. luxembourg and albania are whatever but this is just unlistenable for me. hera bjork is an icon already she didn’t need a comeback especially not this one.

thank you for reading for anyone who managed to get this far. i still have many things to say about some songs and nf performances that happened while i was inactive on here. and maybe rant about the STUPID system changes that they want to implement. but i still won’t be watching esc this year. and i won’t be active on here during the esc week (exams) so i just wanted to say that this could’ve been the best esc year ever, with amazing songs visuals hosts etc. but ebu decided to use all that to promote a genocide. so instead of uniting in genocide i hope that the amazing artist of 2024 will unite in humanity and raise their voice against the atrocities that ebu decided to ignore for the sake of money

Kayla Beardslee: I love staring at the ocean. I'm the kind of person who always has some kind of distraction running through my head. I'm never completely comfortable in my own body; I'm always compulsively planning ahead for something in my mind. But I'm so small in comparison to the horizon that it makes everything go quiet. I can watch and watch and watch the waves and the view will give me almost nothing back, yet it stays in motion just enough that I don't want to look anywhere else. There's comfort in giving yourself up to that kind of all-consuming emptiness. You could maybe say the same about stargazing; the stars, though, are pretty, static points of light that inspire very theoretical daydreams. The ocean is right there on the edge of the everyday, reaching out against the shore, pulsing not with life but with the space between it, ready to grasp and swallow you down into the darkness if you lose yourself enough to give it the chance. You can look at the gray, shifting surface and easily imagine what it might feel like to drown. Or maybe you don't have to imagine. "Let Me In," EXO's first full-group track in four and a half years, is a song about helping someone who's been dragged too far down into the waves. "Vanishing into the dark, you're gone," it begins; "Struggling, but even if you sink, it's fine / Make your way to me through the waves." As the members of EXO reassure their partner that they're not alone, they sing with such precision that you can almost hold onto the syllables -- after all, they want you to not let go, to not lose hope even if the world is cast in nothing but gray and blue. This song crept up on me in the months after its release even before I decided what it was about, but one night, it clicked as a song about depression. "Gotta let me in, you're the ocean," goes the chorus. Inside you is an encroaching darkness and coldness that reaches too deep to disappear. But as the weight of the water presses down and obscures everything else in the distance, EXO's vocals cut through like a lifeline, strength and warmth emanating from their expressions of devotion ("Want to drift off in your soft embrace / If possible, hold me and let me in"). It's not that this song resonated with me because a partner helped me out of depression. I just hear the soft melody in the bridge, rising and falling in time with the waves, and for a moment everything makes sense. It isn't a promise that things are going to get better; maybe things aren't even going to be okay. "Let Me In" ends not with a grand vow to fight or change or reject these feelings -- how could one person oppose something so huge? -- but with a simple reminder that there's someone by their side ready to save them from drowning. "Fall into you, the bluest water / 'Cause you're my ocean," Chen and Baekhyun breathe out in the closing lines: no matter how deep your sadness, someone out there will understand it, willingly dive in, and not falter in their love. I don't know if it's healing or hypnosis, but while the ocean takes and takes and takes from me, I choose to also get something back. Against its vastness, every insignificant, anxious, unsure inch of me suddenly feels so much more important and real. I feel small; I feel aware of myself; I feel human. [10]

Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: Genuinely suave in a way that most pop music simply is not. The charm is studied and practiced, but that's an argument for EXO rather than against. Effort is sexy! [7]

Anna Katrina Lockwood: Man, this EXO comeback was a bit of a shitshow. Between CBX's lawsuit against SM, Kai's obviously unanticipated enlistment timing, and the general clusterfuck in SM Entertainment business affairs, the vibes felt off. Nonetheless, EXO's surprisingly litigious, nearly unassailable vocal line are persistently on their game, and nowhere more so than on "Let Me In". There's not really any new way I can think to express that Chen, Baekhyun and D.O. are better singers than everyone, but I have a new appreciation for the balance the trio has, each with strengths that don't step on the others. The three thrive in this low-tension ambience, meandering amongst the vaporous pad synths, occasionally pinned down by the pleasingly erratic bassline. The other EXO who absolutely nailed this sort of thing in the past few years is of course Kai, and it's a real shame he wasn't around for promotions. It's also part of the reason that "Cream Soda", the glossier title track, felt a little flat -- it was built for Kai, and then he wasn't there. You can put Baekhyun in all the pink fur jackets you want but you ain't gonna pull the wool over my eyes! I just can't, uh, fight the feeling that EXO isn't anyone's priority these last few years, and this release didn't convince me otherwise. But "Let Me In" at the very least plays to their vocal strengths, with predictably appealing results. [7]

Tara Hillegeist: Even now, in the age of anxious, hesitant production choices, and as a result the shrinking aesthetic palette from which Korean pop stars can choose how they want their next comeback to sound, it's still a rare, deflating surprise when a single releases and the worst part in a bad way is the rap. Chanyeol's lead-laced bars kill the whole vibe like he's showing up to the dance rehearsal in cement shoes. The whole song feels sorely spent for breath after that sodden, damming shuffle of a verse, when everything else about this cry-me-a-river-along implicitly calls for a perfect stormcloud instead. Ian Mathers: What do you call it when you don't quite attain the heights of the quiet storm genre? Quiet drizzle? Luckily I love an overcast day. [6]

Nortey Dowuona: The lush keyboard and bass is lovely, but the drum programming is so bland and largely invisible; it boggles the mind as to why it's buried all the way back there. As for the boys themselves, CHEN's delicious tenor feels the most distinct, yet they all comfortably harmonize together. The rapping from Chanyoel feels staccato and jittery, Sehun lilts behind it, and Baekhyun delivers the excellent closure to the final chorus. But overall "Let Me In" feels anonymous, a warm gulp of raspberry tea that I enjoy then forget forever. [5]

Rachel Saywitz: As with most K-pop ballads that end up in my ears these days, I struggle to find what's new about this one--EXO has plenty of slower, groovier songs that I'd rather listen to. But damn, if it isn't nice hearing one of K-pop's best vocal lines again. Baekhyun, D.O., and Chen can make the drabbiest melodies sing, and they stretch and strain on a chorus that might otherwise have no heft to it. [6]

Michelle Myers: There's a faint outline of a great EXO B-side in here, and Baekhyun's vocal tone will always stir something within me. But I can't help but hear the exhaustion and resignation in their performances. It's a bummer. [5]

Brad Shoup: They croon of unfathomable depths, yet they descend on the same cloud that every pop R&B artist leases. [5]

Katherine St Asaph: It's last call at the skating rink, 10 PM at the school dance, 2000 when "This I Promise You" and "Shape of Your Heart" didn't seem like they'd be the last megahit boyband ballads for a long, long time. [6]

Joshua Minsoo Kim: It's just a crazy thing to be alive, man. I think about that every time I hear a song like this, because if there is anything that has survived all of K-pop's many changes, it is this reverence for the melodramatic ballad. That in itself is a complex web. Contemporary tracks like "Let Me In" are rooted in American R&B, a fact that can be traced to Korean American trio Solid finding major success in the '90s but also to the US military's undying presence in Korea. Then there's the rhythm of the rapped verses -- I hear the conversational tone of artists like Zion.T, who only sing-rap like that because of the distance Koreans have from American rap music. And then the decorum of the chorus, how those vocals soar with tremendous belief in the power of gentleness -- you could bring up boy bands from around the world, but I hear in the Korean language a specific passion that overflows even to the English lyrics. "Gotta let me in," we hear, a suggestion that reads like a command. You want to agree because it's firm and direct and tender all at once. And really, you have to: So much of the world is fucked beyond belief, and the fact that the past 100 years of Korean pop music is the product of a nation finding their voice in the midst of imperialism and occupation, the fact that countless Korean artists and music critics are constantly interrogating what it takes for our art to "be Korean"... you want to believe that something new can happen when people come together. I think about "Morning Dew," one of the most famous protest songs in Korean music history, and how it is rooted in sadness. "Leaving all my sorrow behind," goes the final line; "I am going now." That sentiment is not so far off from the one here. "You're the ocean" is an affirmation that we're bigger than we realize, that we can go beyond a small, oppressive understanding of who we are and can be. All my favorite Korean musicians taught me that, from Seo Taiji to Shin Hae Chul to Yoon Sang, from Dalpalan to Choi Joonyong to Sumin. EXO offer much the same, and it makes me feel connected to so much Korean history in the process. What a joy. [6]

Girls' Generation - Genie

Average of 7.3 but who cares, I’m not listening to either of these EP’s to rate them.

Okay, really really interesting. So the order goes: Into The New World -> Girls’ Generation -> Gee -> Genie -> Oh!, all of which I’ve listened to now. By Oh!, they’re very solidly the SNSD that we know and love, but at the point of Girls’ Generation, they still sound very 1st gen. So yeah, 2009 was a Massive year for kpop, because in these two EP’s they’ve gone from shitty 1st gen boringness to Literally SNSD haha

I still have to listen to IGAB, Lion Heart, and Forever 1 from SNSD, so we still have a few pieces of the story missing. But we’re getting there.

Genie

Yesterday I watched Kiss Of Life and some randoms do a kpop song guessing game thing, and this song was one of the ones they had to guess. They had to listen to just that intro part, with the car and the talking. The adults guessed correctly and the kids had no idea

I always associate this song with Gee for obvious reasons, but it actually isn’t all that similar? It’s still synth pop, but it’s quite a bit darker, more sultry

Like they’re singing with their Adult Lady voices instead of their Cute Girl voices

8/10, I think I’m learning to like this song more but we’ll stick with the rating I gave it in Oh!

Haha the strings and the horns, this is SUCH a christmas song, there’s no way this was released in June

Yeah, we’ve got a full orchestral arrangement here, plus the drum kit and the bass
