I really like how Corrin is an outsider in multiple senses, but especially in relating to his presence in the stories.

Corrin's abnormal. He's a sheltered prince despite the Nohrian siblings routinely going on missions. He fights with moves that aren't necessarily powerful like his older brothers and sisters, but they're so wild and unpredictable, that he's a very talented fighter in his own right. He's able to take a dragon form, but the initial reaction from Hans and the Hoshido siblings are that he's a freak from the former, and utter shock and surprise from the latter. He routinely gives others the benefit of the doubt, and has an infinite well of trust and kindness, provided you don't take advantage of it.

And his abnormality is important, because it challenges the norm of Fates' setting. Why is he kind to strangers, including enemies? Why does he see the good in everyone? Why is he averse to taking lives like his duty demands? Why doesn't he just learn how the world works?

Corrin challenges Ryoma's views on what being a leader is and what they should accomplish and challenges Xander's views on justice and to work against the unacceptable no matter how painful it is. He doesn't lay down and accept that animosity and hatred between Hoshido and Nohr is the way of things and won't ever change. He never falls into a neat box of black or white.

Corrin challenges the status quo of the Fates world by being himself, and having the resilience to keep being himself no matter what threatens him. He falters when he begins believing the doubts and poisoned words of his enemies, and flourishes when his loved ones support his personhood and character to the fullest. He gets proven right at the end of all three routes, that you don't have to just embody what Nohr and Hoshido or even your family wants from you; just remain authentically yourself and refuse to back down, and others will start to respect your resolve and put their faith and trust in your actions.

I just think that's dope!

most of my stuff has come from ebay or jp mercari / jp yahoo auctions. I proxy via buyee since it's ez pz to browse a bunch of different markets in one place 👍

I don't recommend using ebay unless it's something you absolutely cannot find elsewhere. you often see the same exact items on jp markets listed on ebay (same photos, sellers, everything) cuz sellers count on people not knowing how to proxy so they charge far more there or they count on people thinking the often free shipping is worth the jacked up price - it isn't lol. unless you're ordering something that's huge, shipping via proxy is manageable imo so long as you consolidate orders)

that's what I do for older merch. for newer stuff, you can very easily find things on amiami like the plushies now that RGG is actually putting out merch for an international audience. you just gotta get in on those preorder periods cuz you never know when restocks happen if at all

*there are some things that you can only proxy buy tho as far as I know - for example, LAD ishin internationally came out with just the physical copy (and steelbox for US only? I don't remember lol). buttttt if you ordered from ebten (which is like a bigass jp merch site) you could get the jp version of ishin which came with a lotta shit like a wall scroll of Ryoma, a fan, a pillow, etc.

moral of the story is if you don't live in japan your game specific merch release will probably be lame as hell lmao but jp versions/exclusives are often available for proxy purchase. for a recent example, here's the preorder bonuses for jp gaiden which includes a lotta cool shit whereas I believe RGG said gaiden's not going to get a physical release internationally (don't quote me on this, it's been a minute lol)

for things like statues, looks like amiami will stock those but GK (garage kit) figures (like the chocobo studios stuff) are only on GK sites like FNC and i.hstoys due to being unlicensed and therefore unofficial but they look hella good 👀

should also mention kuji merch too. kuji stuff is basically those jp lottery things where you make x number of pulls and you're guaranteed to win something every pull and there's tiers of prizes - so if you've seen the Majima kuji stuff, it's all those pins, wall scrolls, hoodies, etc. there's a few sites dedicated to them or you can proxy. I don't often do these cuz I don't want a million copies of a prize like a can badge lol but people do like the random aspect and people often trade dupes of prizes. amiami also has sold extra stock of kuji prizes

Reader Saves Ryoma From Kirumi's Murder Attempt (x Reader)

It had all happened so quickly.

You had been having a hard time sleeping since Kaede’s execution and were aimlessly wandering around the academy.

Sure, it was dangerous, but you sincerely doubted that anyone was actively scouting for a random victim.

Unless you had become someone’s target.

A pit formed in your stomach at this idea and you immediately stepped away from the doors that led to a random classroom. Maybe going to your room was safer than being active at night. You rushed back to the dorms but paused when you heard a loud crack coming from a hallway. 

You turned the corner against your better instincts and froze. Kirumi was standing above Ryoma with some long pole, or was it a stick? What you did know was that Ryoma was unconscious and Kirumi was holding a possible murder weapon.

For some reason you didn’t run away to call for help. That’s what a smart person would have done.

But no, you ran straight into danger, nothing but adrenaline and an odd sense of justice fueling your once tired body. Kirumi barely had time to register what was happening by the time you slammed her into the ground.

She struggled against you, both of her eyes visible to you. The maid looked crazed and with an impossible surge of strength, she threw you into the wall. Your head bounced off the drywall and you grunted in pain.

However, when you saw Kirumi going near Ryoma’s unconscious (you hoped) self, the pain dulled and you staggered to your feet. You reached your hands out and shoved her to the ground. With a speed you didn’t remember possessing, you picked up Ryoma and hauled him over your shoulder before running away.

Your heart thrummed in your chest as you ran, leaping up flights of stairs to reach a destination that felt too far away. Was Kirumi following you? Did that even matter right now?

Eventually, after what felt like hours, you reached your dorm, flung the door open, and rushed Ryoma to your bed. You pulled his hat off, which was damp. When you removed your hand, you saw a messy smudge of pink on your fingers and palm alongside the disturbing scent of iron.

Stifling your gag, you checked his hair and saw what looked like a gash in his scalp. Luckily, you had gone into the nurse’s office, stolen a bunch of supplies, and stuffed them into your bathroom before this had happened.

You were hesitant to leave him, but after you finally checked if he was breathing, you rushed to your bathroom and grabbed supplies. Returning with a damp rag, gauze, and some kind of ointment, you got to work.

You really hoped that this wouldn’t make his wound worse.

By the time you finished, your hands were shaking and you were near passing out. You put your first aid things aside and crawled onto your bed, wrapping Ryoma in a layer of blankets and setting his hat on your nightstand.

In your sleep, you were hugging his cushioned body.

When you woke up, you realized that Ryoma was also awake, but he was as still as a statue. You looked down to see him red in the face but with his eyes wide open. Quickly, you asked if he was okay.

“Yeah. What happened? Wasn’t Kiru-” He cut himself off. You got out of bed and changed his bandages, happy to see his wound was minor and had scabbed during the night.

Even though you stayed silent, Ryoma could tell what you were thinking. “Don’t… Don’t blame Kirumi. What she did was out of love for the country.” You raised an eyebrow at this and asked him what he was talking about.

He explained as well as he could, but the obvious concussion was causing him to blank on some parts of information. He also mentioned random names and places that he didn’t recall. You brushed it off as a delusion from getting his head whacked.

But when he said why Kirumi picked him, you felt your heart squeeze painfully in your chest. What did he mean his life meant nothing? And why did his life mean everything to you?

“I’m only a shell of who I used to be. For a cause as noble as hers, it’d be pretty damn shameful to deny her request. So-” You pulled him into a gentle hug, tears threatening to fall from your eyes.

It was quiet except for your occasional sniffling as the two of you sat on your bed. After a minute, Ryoma decided to hug you as well, patting your back. He didn’t understand why you were crying. The killing game must’ve finally hit you after days of living in shock.

You parted from your hug and handed him his hat, apologizing for the blood. He shook his head, giving you the faintest hint of a smile. He put it back on his head and sighed.

Ryoma patted his pockets, rubbing his hat when he realized he was missing his candy cigarettes. You sat with him, keeping a close eye on him.

The sound of the Monokuma announcement blared through your ears and you both grumbled about that “damn bear”. 

You stood up and reached your hand out for him. He hesitantly took it and you left your dorm holding hands. He looked away from you and huffed, smiling to himself.

“I guess I’ve still got a ways to go.”

The second flaw in the plan to counter 3-2's motive is. Like. Statistics.

So we have this plan to play Motive Keepaway, but it's rooted in a mistake. The Monokubs fucked up. They meant to deliver everyone's video to them, but accidentally distributed them at random, creating this opportunity.

The plan is based on a distribution error. So. What happens if, purely by chance, someone did get the video that was meant for them? Why are we assuming a 100% error ratio?

That brings us to our killer.

As previously noted, Ryoma is one end of the utilitarian spectrum. 3-2's central conversation is about whether or not some people's lives are simply more valuable than others. The other end of that spectrum is Kirumi Tojo, the Ultimate Maid.

In every Danganronpa, there is always one person in the group who is the elite. The cream of the crop, representing the highest echelons. In DR1, that was Ultimate Very Wealthy Loinfruit Byakuya Togami. In DR2, Ultimate Princess Sonia Nevermind. V3's utilitarian Supreme Individual is the last person you might expect.

There's something interesting, in a chapter about utilitarianism, in the paradox of Danganronpa's most service industry character ever being pinned down as its most objectively valuable human. This is achieved through navigating a complex series of bullshit rooted in Kirumi being a Backdoor Godmode PC to arrive at "Prime Minister of Japan somehow".

Tsumugi wrote a bunch of convoluted lore and backstory worked directly into her meteor plot to justify this. But taken on its face, "The humble service worker is the most valuable contributing member of society" is a bold fucking statement and I applaud 3-2 for it.

3-2 leans into this pretty quickly. It doesn't play up her official status, her position as Prime Minister of Japan in a time of dire national crisis; That's saved for the last-second sucker-punch, to drive home the point that they're making and make it less ambiguous.

Rather, it examines Kirumi both as a person and as a figure of utilitarian value through her work. It shows us Kirumi through the dependency that the entire group builds on her. They lay this on thick. They really want you to notice how much she does.

This is a lot to ask of someone. Even if she is a Backdoor Godmode PC, there's still scheduling and logistics to think of. When you look at all of this and you think about that sucker-punch question at the end of the case, "Out of all of us, was Kirumi the one that most deserved to live?" That's a hard question to answer.

Ryoma certainly believed so.

He offered up not only his but all of our lives in exchange for hers, and he went to his grave believing that was a good trade.

Was he right?

That is the moral question that 3-2 wants you to come away grappling with.

Shuichi Saihara - Apprentice Grim Reaper

If Ultimate Lucky Student equals human, then Ultimate Detective equals Death. My working theory is that Shuichi was intended to be Class 79’s resident human, but died on his way to the school and was then taken in by Kyoko as an apprentice.

**Maki Harukawa - Bloody Mary

Specifically the version where she was falsely accused of killing a bunch of kids and then burned alive for it. Now she kills, but only when summoned. Kind of like an assassin!

Kaito Momota - Krampus/Goatman

Kaito really wanted to be viewed like Santa and instead he’s viewed as like. Evil Santa. And he’s sad about it. Also he has a bridge, though I imagine he’d be pretty gung-ho about dancing on it. (I don’t have a good explanation for this either. it’s just vibes.)

Himiko Yumeno - Baba Yaga

More like Baby Yaga, am I right??? I was just going to make her witch, but that’s booooring. I’m probably never going to draw like, Old Lady Himiko, though. Maybe she was just too lazy to age normally.

Tsumugi Shirogane - Lizardperson (Chameleon)

She’s totally plain and normal! Don’t look too closely! You definitely won’t find anything! What is this AU, if not a bunch of monsters cosplaying as humans. And what cryptid would be the best for that, if not a lizard person. As for the chameleon, i like the aesthetic more than just regular lizard face.

K1-B0 - Automaton

Yes, it’s lazy. (Though he’s also in contention for Class Human, specifically so he can claim to be a robot. Because his whole childhood he was gaslit by his “creator” into being told he was a robot. And this is the first school where people hear that and go “yup, that checks out!”)

Gonta Gokuhara - Boogeyman

I really screwed myself over by making Taka Mothman, but I just love that idea too deeply to change it. So, where’d I get the Boogeyman? Well, if we operate under the Oogie Boogie man from The Nightmare Before Christmas, the Boogeyman is basically a sentient pillowcase full of bugs! Sounds good enough to me!

Miu Iruma - Nymph (Dionysian)

Again, I really screwed myself over by using all the horny monsters up on other characters, but I think this works! Dionysian Nymphs are particularly frisky and have a propensity for partying and vulgarity, but maybe the booze will knock a good idea loose every once and a while.

Rantaro Amami - Kelpie

Green hair??? Seaweed??? Hatred of cars??? I got nothing, we really haven’t/didn’t see that much of that boy. This is subject to change of his talent is revealed, in which case kelpie status will probably transfer to Tenko. He’s listed as a possible Class Human because he could be the Lucky Student? But it’s unlikely.

Kokichi Oma - Eldritch Horror

I’m not convinced he’s not an Eldritch Horror in canon, tbh.

Kaede Akamatsu - Sylph

I search high and low, yet found no piano cryptids. So I went with Sylph because they’re air spirits, sometimes depicted as hummingbirds (music theme!) Plus, Kaede can be a little airheaded sometimes.

Ryoma Hoshi - Kappa

This was mostly vibes + I drew a doodle of Ryoma with a Lotad-esc lily pad head and fell in love. Plus, uh, drowning is an essential part of both Ryoma and kappas. Dude would probably be the chillest kappa in existence though.

Kirumi Tojo - Jorōgumo

There’s a lot of Kirumi spider imagery. This seems like a shoo-in.

Angie Yonaga - Living Painting

okay this is mostly just me being on an Ib kick, but it would explain why she’s always smiling. Bonus: Atua was/is the name of her painter.

Tenko Chabashira - Yeti

I…I got nothing for this. I ran out of man-hating monsters, and I wanted something that could beat the shit out of you. It was this or a Chimera. I dunno.

Korekiyo Shinguji - Naga

I only know this because of his FTEs Korekiyo compares himself to Medusa at one point and says it’s his favorite folktale. Unfortunately, gorgon has already been claimed by Miss Celestia Ludenburg, but luckily we can still get that snake monster symbolism. Mask is to cover up that unhinging jaw probably. (Also let’s just say that he isn’t dating his sister for this AU, yeah? I don’t want to deal with that.)

Toko Fukawa/Genocide Jack: Some people raised concerns that having any sort of cryptid that “played off” Genocide Jack could be considered offensive to those with DID or MPD, so I changed it. And honestly? The Kuchisake-onna works so much better. Woman who’s insecure about her body image and carries around a giant pair of scissors?? If that’s not Toko, I don’t know what is!

Mukuro Ikusaba: I love Mukuro, but I felt like the Waheela was just sort of me grasping for any sort of wolf symbolism, and it didn’t really work. Now she’s an incredibly intimidating curse demon who can control the weather! Much better.

Junko Enoshima: I think she was technically a Wraith before?? but Lich just seemed more fitting. She’s every DND campaign’s BBG.

i'm talking by your side 24/7 with a racket in hand (although he insists it's not for tennis or protective purposes, hon we can see right through you)

doesn't mind if you are friends with anyone, but he finds certain people suspicious so he'll warn you about them first before you talk to them

he calls you his reason to live and he absolutely tells you this whenever he sees you

but then the kubz pads arrive and you end up getting kirumi's

you immediately have a bad feeling when maki and kirumi come to tell you that maki gave ryoma his video, so you rushed over to his dorm

"what do you want?" "show me your kubz pad." "no." "right now." "no. if i didn't like it, you wouldn't either." "ryoma hoshi." "...fine. come in."

then you watched it. and on impulse after, you threw it to the ground, cracking the screen.

"THIS IS BULLSHIT!" ryoma was taken aback by your sudden outburst, but not totally surprised. monokuma, however...

"HEY, THOSE AREN'T SUPPOSED TO BREAK! THEY'RE EXPENSIVE, YA KNOW?!" "GET THE FUCK OUT." "okay okay sorry-"

after he left, you held ryoma's hands in his own and reassured him.

"ryo, that video is bullshit because i... i am right here and i care so deeply about you, okay? ryoma, i love you."

you expected him to tell you the typical "you can't love a guy like me", but what you didn't expect was for his hands to squeeze yours as he looked down, seemingly trying to hide his face.

"y/n... thank you... i... i love you, too..."

a smile on your face, you opened your arms and englufed him in a hug, effortlessly bringing him ontop of you as you laid down.

he took off his hat and buried his face into your chest as he wrapped his arms around you. then you felt something wet.

"ryo, are you crying?" "...no..." he's a bad liar, so you just giggled and planted a kiss on top of his head, bringing him closer to you.

you had him right where you wanted him. in your loving embrace, where he knew he was loved and cared for, and where he was safe.

at least, that's what you thought before the magic show a few days after had come to a terrifying conclusion.

"r-ryoma...? RYOMA!!" the scream you let out was nothing less than blood curdling as you watched your small lover get mauled to the bone by pirhanas.

you wanted to throw up. who could have done this?! you both loved each other dearly, so you knew for a fact it wasn't suicide. you shut down that conclusion real quick.

then the culprit became clear. the ultimate maid. kirumi tojo.

"ya know," began kokichi, a grin on his face as he turned to you. "y/n's been awfully silent for a while now. i wonder what's on their mind..." "...shut up."

shuichi had to agree with kokichi, as he too began to ask you what was on your mind.

"y/n-" tenko had began, but wasn't able to continue as you screamed at everyone. "I SAID SHUT UP, JUST SHUT UP ALL OF YOU! I DON'T WANT YOUR QUESTIONS!"

silence befell the trial grounds as you sobbed uncontrollably. kirumi's guilt worsened.

"why...?" you began. "why did you do it? and to him?!"

kirumi reluctantly explained after shuichi put the pieces together. the harsh, tear filled glare you gave her made her sweat.

"you bitch...! I'LL NEVER FORGIVE YOU FOR AS LONG AS I SHALL LIVE!!"

after her execution, you were the first one to storm off to the dorms, ignoring the cries of your friends and wanting to make a beeline to your room when you stopped in front of ryoma's dorm room.

you were already crying before, but now you had finally collapsed to your knees and sobbed uncontrollably into your hands.

you did this until you felt something tap your head twice, as if it was trying to comfort you.

"THERE-THERE. HE-WOULDN'T-WANT-YOU-TO-BE-SAD,-WOULD-HE?" looking up, you saw monodam in front of you, the door to ryoma's room open a crack behind him. you quickly assumed he had come out of it after hearing you cry.

you looked away, small sobs coming out of you as you had calmed down, your hands wiping away your tears.

he then held out something to you that very quickly caught your eye and brought you to tears once more.

ryoma's hat.

Chapter 13 of Fates Revelation is a writing highlight for me.

Corrin: What's going on? They're both blaming each other for this carnage.

Azura: Of course. Kingdoms at war will always twist things to benefit themselves.

Ryoma and Xander-representative of Hoshido and Nohr as a whole-uphold the conflict and status quo of the world they live in. Even if it makes no sense, they accept that they're enemies and an enemy must have done something awful to harm the peace.

Even parts of their battle quotes and end of chapter dialogue emphasize this.

Ryoma: It doesn't matter, Kagero. Anyone who doesn't side with Hoshido is the enemy. What will you be?

Xander: Trust her? Don't be a fool. I won't listen to any more of your lies. You've chosen your side��opposite me. Prepare yourself, Camilla.

-

Xander: This isn't over! We'll fight to the very last man!

Ryoma: You won't see Hoshido waver! We'll fight until there's no one left!

Xander: Whoever retreats now admits defeat! Nohr will never lose to Hoshido.

Ryoma: This war will continue until we take our last breath!

They are unable to see any part of a conflict as something with them or against them. Nuance and rationality don't sit well in minds stubbornly steeped in years of animosity. War, hatred, and reinforcing the way things are is something both of them are willing to do, because they see no other path or choice for themselves.

Corrin and Azura meanwhile, actively disrupt their world views.

Corrin: ...You may be my brothers, but I won't go easy on you if you try to stop me! Come, everyone! ... Ryoma! Xander! Please, you both have to listen to me! We've defeated the real enemy—you don't need to fight each other now!

Azura: Ryoma, Xander... It wasn't Nohr or Hoshido who destroyed this town. It was done by the invisible forces that we just defeated. Now that they are gone, I will not allow any more senseless violence. I will sing my song as many times as necessary to restore peace. Do you still insist on fighting?

And it's not empty words or cries that fall on deaf ears. Corrin is strong. Her will is iron-clad, and she will ensure her vision of peace is made a reality, no matter who she makes an enemy of. Azura is strong as well. What she lacks in directing a path on her own, she makes up for with raw resilience and no qualms about using her song-something that risks her life-to end things on her terms.

They force their stubborn older brothers to look at things in a different perspective; to stop trying to hack and slash their lives away and consider a bigger threat to what and who they care about.

While they aren't swayed immediately, they're undoubtedly shaken. After that, it takes personal introspection and uncomfortable truths for each of them to swallow their pride and admit their ways are wrong, and to follow Corrin to end a senseless war.

And I love this exchange at the end as well:

Scarlet: Ryoma's talked my ears off about what happened to you as a kid. You sound like an idealistic brat to me. You want to bring peace to the world? Ha!

Corrin: There's nothing idealistic about ending this horrible war.

REJECT 👏🏽THE 👏🏽 STATUS 👏🏽 QUO 👏🏽!

Accusing others of being naive or idealistic for things like this, in my opinion, shows cowardice, or even ignorance; a life that's been beaten down by other upholders of a terrible state of the world until they agree.

Why is it naive to trust people? Why is it idealistic to want something like endless warring to stop?

We're fed a lie as children: "Life's unfair, you can't do anything about it." Says who!? Why accept that life is cruel and unyielding, when there's so much capacity for good in the world? Is life actually unchangeably unfair in its nature, or is it simply malefactors taking advantage of innocent people in order to rise up to slake their own greed?

Once terrible people get in power, they beat down any forms of resistance and feed this very same lie to them. Worse still, they can even convince the masses to discriminate, fight, and kill each other all so they can swoop in during the aftermath and reap the benefits. And people, at their lowest point, take solace in any explanation-no matter how untrue and no matter who it's coming from-in order to have some semblance of control or direction. That forms their new view of the world.

It takes people who haven't been exposed or raised to believe such nonsense (Corrin) and people who are wise enough to recognize the true problems of the world (Azura), to push against this normalized destruction between two innocent groups of people and direct their ire towards the actual oppressor (Anankos).

It's succint, but scathing. The word choice-in both JP and localization-is too deliberate to consider it a coincidence, I genuinely think it's a good criticism of how our modern world works as well. From a philisophical standpoint it is basic, but Fates as a whole also tackles issues of ignorance/discrimination, xenophobia, the boundaries and meanings of family, who defines justice, the belief of many versus the will of the few, embracing consequences instead of running away, and exploring the concept of leadership in general.

For a game this big, IMO, it meets the mark more often than not when considering the points it wants its audience to hear.

The Warrior of Light (AKA Meteor Survivor AKA John Finalfantasy) has a clear addiction to adopting wayward youths. The Leveilleur Twins are the most obvious example, given how players responded when they were very publically disowned by their father, but it seems like every expansion has at least one usually-orphaned teen who the WoL basically adopts in some questline. The WoL simply cannot be stopped.
