阿弥陀佛. Universe started together when your xin (mind) is shakened. Yi than zhin too many 32,000. Xing fu yuan man. It is created even before any time and space. Alaya consciousness is created. How big? Bigger than the universe, it is zhe xin. Lun wui is to tai yim and change it. Meng sarm kin seng (sarm leng) where u have chap seng (dirty, tham chan chi, ko sarng wud too use to it this turned into wisdom, chi seng sickness). Sarng meng is sarng wud. Zhuan seng to become zhi wai. Fui fuk zhi seng, seng fat (cheng fo). Close to Enlightenment which with no differentiation. Mona become pin deng. Xin fo peng deng. That is the state of Buddhahood. Time & space came from one source. Me but still got fa sheng. Western Pureland is created by it too of Amitabha Buddha but it does not have 'zhi xin dong nian'. Non differentiation mind. The truth behind the tooth. The papaya croach story. When you let go of yourself, you got the world. When you let go of this world, you will get Western Pureland. Tree is life. Today is world environmental day, Jun 5th 2022. A tree is a universe. Money is printed from destroying a universe (tree) and then used in ways to cause more harm to the planet, the universe. Change it dont chase for it, seek and manage. Everything you do, everyone you see, dharma help you see the truth all attachments become saha world, then suffering arise, everything is Amituofo, the way you see the world becomes Amituofo. Ching jing peng deng sure reborn in Pureland. Practicex3. Zhen fa meng ru lai (Kuan yin aeons ago. Kuan ser yin ru lai teaches Kuan Ser Yin pusa the disciple, er kern zhui ling). My true nature is the Buddha. Wui guai zhi sing. Dharma is the cure sickness (Fart). Li ( bu shen bu miet) ser jen, xiang sher jia. Xin is chen, ser is jia. True or false also dont be too attached. Bu ji xing dong nien jiu ser the tips. With a sickness, ji, xing, dong, nien, fern, bie, zhe, zhuo (6 gen). Karn po. Yi cher yau wei fart, sern miet fa. Mei lai mei chu, sam mo se de mei you. This body is my manifestation. Dont do anything in saha world that makes you attached too much that you couldnt let go and seek rebirth in Western Pureland. Wu xin is Amituofo. Amituofo is my xin. Every ben xin is Amituofo. You seek yourself. Let yourself be found, not search outside but inside. The world is using a piece of paper to weigh everything, cert for qualification, paper owns land and houses. A piece of paper becomes everything, your self worth as light as a piece of paper....Jing zhen guo. Fang xia chai but ku, let go and burden's gone...Compassion is your focus, is your life. If no compassion then only left unhappiness and sorrow. Happiness in Saha world is the start of unhappiness. Go back to the neutral state is happiness, no unhappiness. You need to peace down, silent give rise to wisdom. My heart is my way place. Wo xin ju shi tao chang. Fo got 52 jie ti. Let go, become Arhat, let go become Pusa and let go become Buddha.

You are fo why cannot become fo?

Becos u never let go of the 6 realm or rebirth activities. Greed, anger, ignorance (3 poisons need to let go 1st)

All ppl are the creation of their minds.

Then can u nian fo (real valuable activities the rests are useless)? All problems are due to cant let go of afflictions. Zhe xin give rise to Amituofo & Western Pureland. All existence is creation of the mind. How to let go of everything and seek rebirth in Pureland. All existence, this Saha world is creation of the mind / messy thoughts. Our body is our own manifestation of the (our) mind. Let go of the thoughts and mind, it will take u to next creation / manifestation. Practice but forget don't put practice into the mind. Be forgetful but only remember where you are going, Western Pureland so keep that in mind. This is called freedom of the mind (like depicted in Heart Sutra, freedom - zezai), our only aim which is zezai warng serng si fang ji le sher chieh. Love is the opposite of wisdom. Wisdom can only arise from compassion if you can turn love to compassion. Love can be a distraction to a cultivator. Love is not real. Reason stuck in 6 realms of retribution is love (because got form and conditions), everything of this nature is impermanent, hence love is not real, jia xiang. U cant come out. Dont let jia siang chi pien ni de xin. Dont be fooled by a false image / appearance. Use peng deng xin to console sentient beings, Buddha treat everyone like his father, the King. The thanxiang, cow agarwood no longer here. Go Western Pureland: (Haitao Fashi) Use 3 fu tien, kan ern de fu tien, zhun jing de fu tien, cher pei de fu tien. (Chin Kung Fashi) 3 fu, xiao shun fu mu / respective teachers - 1. Filial piety is the root. 2. Take refuges, san kwai yi / chi kai. 3. Sam sun yan ko (first, nian fo yin, cheng fo zhi ko). Ying guang fa shi. Wu liang yik zhi zhai fan now, Da zhi zai tien wang tha men di fu de guang ming bu nen kan dao. In front of rulai, it's gone. Fan fu. We have 51 mental factors

- sing so 11 san de (seong ying), fanuo de 26 (seong ying). The 10 recitation method x 9 times in a day, 2 minutes each time, nian nian bu warng Amituofo. Huan xi pu ser. Pu ser, cai yuen guenx2 lai. All existence are manifestation of karma, the fruits of causes (combination of effects). All are swihuan de. At one point, u are here, there, everywhere in the universe of existence, different space and time like a multiverse. This body is like a bowl of water with lots of salt added (a.k.a. sufferings which r the effects of ur past karma). Everything u have contact with is to let u 'suffer' all circumstances created in some past lives that u cant see or remember. The purpose of cultivation is to realised this truth (6 realms of rebirth). To break and escape this cycle is to achieve Buddhahood. Fastest way is to see all existences as one and of the same. If u destroy ur own defilements u are doing the same for others only when u have compassion and use 'peng deng, chi pei, po re xin'. This body is yeap bo. Life is like a bowl of salt water. Living it is like drinking it. You need to add more water not morr salt so it geys better over time. Get out of it, pour it back to the sea. You dont need to drink it. It is where water would return (thru true self discovery and enlightenment, practice of Buddhism to the highest level).

4 Universal Vows

Also sometimes called the Bodhisattva Vows, as they are essential to the Bodhisattva path of Mahāyāna Buddhism.

1. Sentient beings are limitless; I vow to liberate them.

眾生無邊誓願度

Zhòngshēng wúbiān shìyuàn dù

Zhong Shen Wu Bian Ser Yuan Tu

2. Afflictions are endless; I vow to eradicate them.

When the Prince, Siddhartha Gautama bids farewell to his father saying:

cannot remove the pain I feel.

For I know that they too will have to suffer,

Like you, like me, like us all.

Yes. We must all die…

and be reborn…

and die again,

and be reborn and die,

and be reborn and die again.

No man can ever escape that curse.

Then that…is my task. I…will lift that curse.

At the moment of the attainment of awakening, the Buddha uttered the following:

"I travelled through the rounds of countless births through the cycle of existence,

Seeking but not finding the builder of this house [of 'self'] and again and again, I faced the suffering of new birth.

O Housebuilder, you have now been seen,

You shall not build a house again for me.

Your beams [defilements] have now been broken, Your ridgepole [ignorance] utterly shattered.

My mind has attained the supreme

'nibbana' ('blowing out')

Realised is the unconditioned, Achieved is the end of craving."

When attachment arises in our mind it does not feel harmful; on the contrary it usually feels beneficial. Therefore, it is important to contemplate repeatedly the faults of attachment and to recognize it as a delusion whose only function is to cause us harm.

Remember one cannot trust what you sees because ur eyes are imperfecg and cannot see the absolute truth. This organ limitation is bounded by it creations. It is created from delusion. What is deluded cannot revealed it undeluded nature. Just like the blind leading the blind...it is still within the same state which is called suffering. When u see without seeing and when u have sight of not using any organ is when the truth would be revealed and the absolute truth is the state overcoming delusion or samsara, the true escape of realm of rebirths. Is when u crossed the other shore. The state of relization, Buddhood, the enlightment.

Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace 如懿传 (2018)

Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace (Chinese: 如懿传; pinyin: Rúyì Zhuàn) is a 2018 Chinese television series based on novel Hou Gong Ru Yi Zhuan by Liu Lianzi. Starring Zhou Xun and Wallace Huo, the series chronicles the marriage of Qianlong Emperor and Ula-Nara, the Step Empress. It is the sequel to the critically acclaimed drama Empresses in the Palace. (copy and pasted from Wikipedia) Interestingly, the costume designers are Chen Tongxun and Zhang Shuping, both of whom specialize in republican era costumes and not period ones.

Much like Story of Yanxi Palace which aired shortly before it, Ruyi is set in the Qianlong era (1735-96). And just like Yanxi Palace, it didn't 100% land in the 18th century either. It's obvious that some attempts at historical accuracy have been made and the costumes are not entirely guzhuang, though the extras more often than not are wearing standard guzhuang Manchu costumes----this is where Yanxi outshines Ruyi in terms of accuracy.

I think a very bizarre aspect of the costuming in Ruyi is that while the female protagonist sports some looks that are very legit, very accurate to the mid 18th century, the extras look like they live in a time setting where the Eight Nation Alliance was gonna come barging into Beijing to quell the Boxer Rebellion any minute (something that happened in 1899-1901). Without further ado, let’s get into it. All the screenshots are from the Youtube uploads.

Here Ruyi is seen in a very historically accurate hairstyle most Qing period dramas wouldn’t recreate: braided hair. Manchu women originally wore their hair braided, and it wasn’t until the mid 18th century when braiding evolved into 钿子 dianzi and later 两把头 liangbatou that it fell out of favor. Though they probably used hair extensions here which look kind of fake? Theoretically all the hair should be up in braids so there shouldn’t be loose hair/braids dangling at the back.

Hongli looks very 19th century, I feel very sorry for him. So Ruyi has this side parted fringe which shouldn’t be a thing; as you can see in the previous portrait, her hair should be middle parted and pulled back. The 坎肩 kanjian vest she’s wearing screams 19th century and I’m not particularly fond of it. A notable accessory here is the white kerchief. In 18th century export paintings, you could often see Manchu women wearing a long white scarf/kerchief that’s either draped around the neck or attached to a 璎珞 yingluo necklace or the button at their lapel. The stiff, white strip of fabric you see in most Qing dramas was the 19th century form of the kerchief, which became standardized. In the 18th century, there were still a variety of ways to wear the kerchief.

These just look like average guzhuang costumes inspired by late 19th century Manchu clothing, not appropriate for the time period at all.

They even used the over the top 大拉翅 dalachi headpiece with the 燕尾 yanwei (swallow tail) at the back of her head, this for real looks more 1940s than 1740s.

You can obviously see that Ruyi is the main character because she’s always the only one in historically accurate costumes ahaha. She’s probably wearing a 衬衣 chenyi, which looks pretty good besides the side slit which shouldn’t be there. She wears the 马蹄袖 matixiu or horse hoof cuff folded which... I guess was socially acceptable? She wears a plain dianzi on her head, though the side parted fringe is still bugging me. The other ladies are just guzhuang realness and not particularly historical.

Ok nevermind. Upon closer inspection there are a couple problems with this look: 1) The dianzi is not really a dianzi or the braided hair covered by a turban hairstyle I mentioned in my review for Yanxi Palace, but rather something akin to the 19th century liangbatou, just in the shape of a dianzi. The diagonal direction of the hair very much resembles 19th century 两把头 liangbatou. 2) There is a braided swallow tail at the back which shouldn’t be there. 3) The thin black binding would usually just be around the neck and not extend down to the lapel. 4) The collar shape doesn’t look quite right; in the 18th century, Manchu women’s standing collars for casual dress resembled those worn by Han women, which were soft, unstiffened, tall, closed by two buttons and had rectangular edges. I know this is very nitpicky and overall this look is still pretty ok.

For once Hongli actually has a valid reason to wear the 礼服 lifu ensemble, to his own coronation, though they gave him a fake standing collar for no good reason. Btw I refer to Qianlong as “Hongli” as a form of endearment because I feel like I’ve seen so much of him that he’s familiar already. Also it makes me feel powerful because in the 18th century no Chinese person could refer to the emperor by his real name in public so :3

I think that’s all there is to say about this drama, Ruyi is still serving semi historically accurate 18th century looks and everybody else is from somewhere within 1850-1950. I have to say that the costumes here are not as well made as the ones in Yanxi Palace, which took the effort to make the extras look like they’re from the same universe as the protagonist. I appreciate the attempt at historical accuracy and the couple niche items shown (e.g. braided hair, soft kerchief, plain chenyi), but overall the design is a bit messy and all over the place, so I’d rate it a 4/10.

Hi! I watched all of LYB in a period of 4 days or something insane like that because if you! This is an incredible show. Thank you for blogging about it so much that I had to check it out.

I was just wondering, by any chance do you know if dramas accurately depict interactions between different ranks of people (i.e. modes of address) as well as different types of kowtows/bows? Were these types of bows/interactions documented? What about the ways in which entire groups of individuals speak to the emperor? (Such as when they all speak in unison or ask the emperor to calm down when he’s angered and almost everyone of low rank prostrates themselves on the floor.)

What kind of historical archival research would have had to go into the authentic representations of these social performances? (Especially for dramas set nearly two thousand years ago, such as LYB, which supposedly takes place in the 6th century?)

oof, this is a hard question to answer, to the point where I wrote a 15-page research paper about this for one of my end-of-term papers back in college.

I would generally be wary of taking period dramas as accurate in general--all of them exist on a sliding scale of how ‘authentic' / ‘historically accurate’ they’re trying to be, and especially when it comes to wuxia/xianxia, historical accuracy tends to go clean out the window. Much like costume design, or fight choreography, choosing how and when to display/deploy matters of ritual and etiquette may be something initially inspired by historical record and artifact, but are ultimately subservient to creative decision. Which is to say, it doesn’t matter how accurate your research into historical research might be, if the director wants it performed like this, by golly, it will be performed like this.

Thanks to shows like LYB and 芈月传 Mi Yue Zhuan / The Legend of Mi Yue, both of which foregrounded the importance of ritual, inviting a ritual director (like a fight choreographer or an intimacy director) on set is becoming more of an industry standard in period dramas. That being said, ritual directors are only that: a designer and expert and consultant, whose suggestions are welcomed by cast and crew, but considering restrictions of props, sets, costuming, wigs, and directorial intent, the true ‘authenticity’ of the ritual portrayed is a lower priority than a whole host of other considerations.

People like positioning LYB during the Northern and Southern dynasties, which would situate it between 429 and 620 CE, but at the end of the day, it can’t be placed in any specific era. It might have been that the costume designer chose this period in order to have a solid anchor point for their design; it might just be a convenient shorthand for a vaguely historical period involving the existence of multiple states at war with each other. That being said, it isn’t critical to LYB’s narrative, storytelling, or worldbuilding that it be set in any particular era.

I think acknowledging the timelessness/ahistoricity of LYB is important, because there are works that are explicitly historical fiction--for example, 清平乐 Qing Ping Yue / Serenade of Peaceful Joy or 如懿传 Ru Yi Zhuan / Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace. These works deliberately use historical figures as their characters, reference real occurrences, and thus, are much more concerned with historical accuracy (within the bounds of historical fiction and narrative demand) than a work like LYB. That’s not to say that these dramas are inherently more ‘historically accurate’ than dramas that don’t use historical figures, but again--we see the sliding scale of historical accuracy and authenticity at play. Different shows, by virtue of their content and vision and intended audiences, will have different perspectives on how important ‘historical accuracy’ is.

I keep putting ‘historical accuracy’ and ‘authenticity’ in quotes, because I also think it’s worthwhile to question the idea/standards of what we think is historical accuracy. I wrote a bit about it in this post, but I think the most important part is this:

[...] This discussion calls to mind Joseph Lam’s evaluation on the authenticity of reconstructed Confucian rituals in his article “The yin and yang of Chinese Music Historiography: The Case of Confucian Ceremonial Music,” in which he analyzes the background and performance of two reconstructed Confucian rituals, one in Taipei and one in Qufu. Lam notes that, in assessing the nebulous criterion of ‘authenticity,’ the viewer must recall that “we have no Urtext of Confucian ceremonial music” – or indeed, Zhou ritual – “no objective mechanism or methodology to measure and analyze musical subjectivity, and no fool-proof gauge to filter the subjective present from the musical past” (Lam 47).

No matter how good our documentation of ritual and reliability of textual transmission is (which is very good, considering that you can hop on ctext and read the 周礼 Zhou Li / Rites of Zhou, but also not very good, if you’ve done any research into textual variance), at the end of the day, we simply do not have an Urtext of ritual. Especially when it comes to particularly transient arts/performances (the problem of how to preserve dance choreography, prior to the development of video, comes to mind), even detailed documentation inevitably loses information in recording.

All of which is to say--the ritual in LYB is very detailed and richly nuanced. Whether it’s historically accurate is a completely different question that we might not ever be able to get exact answers to, and might not even be a necessary pursuit in our enjoyment of the show’s experience.
