Looking Back: The Old Stones Of Din Lligwy
Looking Back: The Old Stones Of Din Lligwy
We came here last week, Monday 2nd January 2023. I’d been here before – the north-easterly corner of Ynys Mon (Anglesey) and to this field above the sea, where there are ruins of a Norman chapel (12th century) and a Romano-Celtic settlement of the late 300s AD. And with all these chronological markers in place, I should perhaps add one more and say that it was probably 60 years since I was last…

The Hooded Ones
'The Genii Cucullati are otherworldly entities whose image appears throughout Celtic Britain and Europe during the era of Roman domination. Genius means “a spirit” and a cucullus is a full-length hooded woollen robe. If they look more than a little like mediaeval monks, then this is because their successors also adopted this pragmatic attire. Thus the Genii Cucullati are literally the “hooded spirits.” In Britain they tend to be found in a triple deity form, which seems to be specific to the British representations.
No surviving documentation explains their identity or function. Instead what we know of them is pieced together from archaeological evidence and surviving inscriptions. They are thought to be guardian-type figures offering protection and sanctuary. Some scholars theorise that their hoods are an artistic motif indicating that the beings depicted are normally invisible, “slippery avoidance of being too-clearly defined, preferring instead to remain hidden/hooded/held in obscurity.”
Sometimes, however, the hoods appear very phallic. Sometimes the phallic imagery is overt: some Cucullati have removable hoods revealing the phallus hidden within. An exposed phallus traditionally serves as an amulet that promotes personal fertility, and magically averts death. It may also chase away ghosts and many evil spirits. Indeed, Genii Cucullati are often depicted carrying items indicating fertility, such as eggs and coin purses or martial prowess such as swords of daggers.
In Britain, their images appear in two key locations, the Cotswolds, and Northumbria – a direct correlation with the concentration of Black Monk sightings .Celtic Scholar Miranda Green wrote “The cult of the Genii Cucullati appears to have embraced profound and sophisticated belief systems” and that “such traditions did not wholly die after the coming of Christianity.” She believed that these hooded figures seem to have left an impression of supernatural power in our countryside.'

Various art shit, you’re welcome babes ❤️
1) Im a sucker for demon Vene rather than angel Vene, also obvious good omens inspired lmao
2) I looooooove the idea of Germany having a mini schnauzer! I did a poll on my other blog and the name Pretzel won! I based her personality on the mini schnauzer I had, Sir Lewis. Talkative, very loyal, a massive cuddler, abandonment and anxiety issues. I think Germany adopted her from a (verified) show dog breeder for the purpose of going on different kinds of hunts with him and Prussia, but in the long run it didn’t work out because Germany may have neglected to train her properly and spoiled her far more than he meant to. So her job is exactly like the other three dogs; a cuddly lap dog.
3) Not many notes here. Just transmasc Romano and I think Romano got a perm in the past as an attempt to bring back his once VERY curly hair because he honestly missed it. He gave up in the 90s lol
4) Redrew the old line up for the British Isles family! Very slight redesigns too! I think the canon uk bros designs are nice but also idc, I’ll draw these uk bros all the time instead 👀

In praise of Sulis
(Adapted from Orphic Hymn #8 to Helios)
Hear, golden Goddess, whose eternal eye
with broad survey illumines all the sky,
self-born, unweary'd in diffusing light,
and to all eyes the mirror of delight.
Maiden of the seasons, holy star,
from darkness hope comes beaming from afar,
with thy right hand the source of morning light,
and with thy left unconquered queen of night.
Your march agile and vigorous, radiant sun,
round heaven's course with haste and might you run.
Foe to the wicked, but the good soul's guide,
o'er all steps to the good you do preside.
With precious waters, Shining Queen, tis thine,
to gift unto the world healing divine.
Mother of ages, guide of prosperous deeds,
holy seer, from whom clear sight proceeds,
Sulis Invicta, all-seeing, bearing light,
source of existence, pure and fiery bright,
friend of crops, immortal queen of years,
strong and warm, whom ev'ry power reveres.
Great eye of heaven and the starry skies,
fated with eternal flame to set and rise,
dispensing justice, truth from you dost stream,
the world's great star, and o'er all supreme.
Faithful defender, and the eye of right,
of days the ruler, and of life the light.
From sacred springs pour blessings great and pure,
to each soul peace, and for each ill a cure.
Propitious on these humble labours shine,
and bless thy suppliants with life divine.

hi hello i shamefully still have not read flight of the heron But i do love uh roman naming conventions. if you're looking for a praenomen for a Keith have you considered Kaeso? it would be a little bit old fashioned by the period of your setting but also it contains the elusive letter k in latin :-)
salve! (sorry, couldn't help myself.) thank you for this message! I'm pleased to see that I haven't driven off my followers with my incessant flight of the heron all day all night.
ah, yes, Kaeso! it's funny you should mention it, as I was considering today polling my 3 followers who are patient enough to indulge my whims with whether or not I should consider that name. it's been one of my top contenders lately, mostly so that I wouldn't be faced with writing a story in which the main character was given the Roman equivalent of... idk, John. I initially dismissed Caeso over fear that people would mispronounce it as queso, but I think the K-spelling works better, if I can convincingly get away with it (I may put in a pronunciation thing to remind people that it's more like kai-so than kay-so.) the fact that it's old fashioned is something that can be worked into the story. in canon Keith's name is fairly unusual and comes from the surname of his father's best friend, and the Windham family in real life seems to have had a bad habit of surnames as first names (*points at the multiple individuals by the name of Wadham Wyndham*) — so suffice to say I can claim his family is a stuffy old gens who haven't added any new praenomen to the list since the Republic.
thank you for your message! I really appreciate your suggestion, and I suspect that it will stick :-)
