La Brea's "Don't Look Up" Buries the Lead
Tuesday’s episode started off strong, gave us a lot of action, a lot of drama, but left me feeling jilted. We begin in 2021 and oddly I had forgotten all about Ty, but we’re quickly reacquainted as the poor guy sits in a restaurant lamenting his situation to a bartender (Shawnee Jones) – in code of course. She gives him a little advice and wouldn’t you know, he takes it! Cut to 10K B.C. where…

In my 382th review I take a look at La Brea 1x01 "Pilot"
Spoilers Below
I think the biggest thing that I noticed about La Brea from it's opening episode is that they really shouldn't have shouted out Lost in this show. The inspiration was clear from the very start of the show, but mentioning Lost ended up making it feel a little too cute for it's own good, especially since this is a show that is taking itself completely seriously. If there was a way for me to describe La Brea it would be close but not quite.
Starting from the opening of the show, where they do this big destruction set piece, there are issues. This is supposed to not only be a spectacle, but also somewhat horrifying, working in that balance and not quite finding it. Mostly as this scene can't quite carry the gravitas that the creators are trying to imbue it with. That not to say that the scene is a complete failure. On a functional front, it does all the things that an opening scene needs to, sets up characters, hooks and stakes. Alongside that, some of the emotional beats, especially the one between Eve (played by Natalie Zea from The Following and Justified) and Izzy (played by newcomer Zyra Gorecki), do work. All that being said, the scene as a whole was missing the main thing that made the openings scene of Lost, and similar scenes of large scale destruction work, tension.
That is a problem with the show as a whole, the scenes where the camerawork and performances needs to instill tension in the viewer don't do that well enough. This is an issue that plagues the later half of the episode where there is a supposed ticking clock, but the characters, for the most part, don't portray that sense of urgency to the viewers in a believable way. The only character that seems to be able to convey that ticking clock well is Riley (played by newcomer Veronica St. Clair).
I find it real interesting that the younger characters are the ones that work the best in this episode, as Riley, Izzy, Josh (played by newcomer Jack Martin) and Scott (played by Rohan Mirchandaney from Hotel Mubai and Mystery Road) are the stand out characters from this opening episode. That being said, they aren't the focus of the show, which is around the parents, Eve, Sam (played by Jon Seda of the extended Chicago TV Universe) and Gavin (played by Eoin Macken from Merlin and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter). These actors are serving performances that leave me unengaged with their plights, and in a way, at times, feels like they are actively pushing some of the more interesting characters to the sidelines. That isn't the best look for an opening episode.
Now, all of this being said, this is only the first episode, and it has given the show as a whole some foundations that can be worked from. A pilot is rarely ever indicative of the full show, and the adaptations that they make as they head into the next couple episodes will be so much more important to the whole of the show than the issues that this episode might have. There is enough good in this opening showing that I am hopeful they can adapt towards something more compelling than the final product that they put out. 6/10
