Lucky Penny - Chapter Twenty-Three

Fanboy tried to not worry when Lucky was deployed, but it never worked. Especially after the uranium mission almost took her away from him.

Cin noticed how on edge Fanboy had been during classes, his mind elsewhere when it should be on their students.

"She's fine Mickey." She offered. "She's on a squadron with some damn fine pilots."

"I know Cin." He says giving her a smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes. "I'm just ready for her to be home."

She pats his arm, "soon hermano."

At that exact moment, Ice was slamming down his phone with force hoping the man on the other end could feel his wrath.

"Tom?" Dragon's voice comes from the doorway. "What's wrong?"

She always knew when something was wrong, many years of marriage does that to you.

"Lucky's mission is being pushed back a couple of weeks, apparently their flight sims aren't going as planned." He sighs putting his head in his hands.

He feels her walk over to the desk, he opens his arms to allow his wife to sit in his lap. A weight that calmed him.

"I should have fought harder for someone else to go." He mumbles into her shoulder.

"Ice, look at me." He lifts those pretty eyes to meet hers. "We both know what Hermes did here at Top Gun. He wasn't going to accept anyone else. He wants a do-over, to prove she wasn't really the best. But our Lucky? She is the best. She will prove him and everyone there wrong. Then she will come home with her head held high."

Elsewhere, right down the hall, another couple was not as...composed.

"I don't know why you didn't fight harder for her to stay!" Whiskey yells at her husband.

"I'm sorry? I was just in the room Jade, it wasn't my call."

"Ice listens to you."

Slider chuckles "He hasn't listened to me since our flying days. And he really didnt listen much to me back then."

Whiskey calms down a little, totally dejected. "I just hate how sad Mickey has been without her here."

"Me too, baby. It's been like torture knowing we did that to them."

Slider opens his arms and allows Jade to melt into him, he kisses the top of her head.

And even further down the same hallway, Cyclone was pretty sure his wife was plotting his demise. Venom hadn't talked to him since she learned he had sent Lucky on a mission halfway through the honeymoon.

She had even been staying at the Kerner's home with her bff Whiskey and completely avoided him while at work. He had a sneaking suspicion she was behind the fact that Cin had been giving him coffee with salt not sugar in it as well.

While the Mama Bears were giving the Papa Bears hell, Mickey was...not having the time of his life.

Him, Payback, Phoenix, and Bob were teaching a simulation and his brain wasn't working like it should. The nagging feeling that something was wrong wouldnt go away.

"You okay back there Fanboy?" Payback asks.

"Yeah man, I'm sorry." He replies.

"We can land if you want, Phoenix and Bob can handle the class."

"No I'm fine."

Payback doesn't reply, he knows his WSO and best friend better than to believe that but he won't say it out loud. Yet.

Another voice comes over the comms. "Payback, Fanboy. Land immediately."

The voice is Cin's and nobody in the air likes the tone of voice she's using.

"What do you mean it's been delayed?" Mickey's voice was louder than normal as everyone in the room just watched him.

"I received a call, their flight sims are not being as successful as they were hoping before completing the mission." Ice's voice is calm, but there is a hint of anger that scares everyone who knows Ice.

Before Mickey could throw a retort at his pseudo-father-in-law, Dragon spoke. "Mickey, we weren't going to tell you this. She's flying with Hermes, he is who requested her for the mission."

Fanboy processes this information before turning bright red, Rooster lays a hand on his shoulder but it doesn't stop the words from coming. "You gave her up to a pack of fucking wolves?"

"Mick..."

"No. I don't want to hear any excuses."

The Daggers plus Cin all share a look, they are used to Lucky being the hot headed half of the couple. In fact most of them had never seen Fanboy get angry except when they played Mario Kart.

"You know what hell he put her through when we were here the first time, and you let her go half way around the world - on our honeymoon no less - to fly with the piece of shit who made her question her abilities?"

Whiskey stands and brings him into her arms, he returns the hug but she can feel the anger rolling off of him in waves.

"Son, Lucky is going to prove once again that she has always been the best." Ice speaks up, Dragon's hand in his. "She isn't going to let that weasel win."

"You better be right, because if he does anything to hurt her in his blind jealousy? I will never forgive any of you that sent her away."

Hours later, when the Daggers had gone home for the night. Jake was the only one left in his office. He had to write reports on the new recruits, and it took him forever to do them.

His cell phone rings, he assumes it's Cin calling to check on him.

"Hey babe I'm almost done here."

"Jake it's me. I don't have much time. I need your help."

"....Lucky?"
