Hyo-Shin knew he made the right decision to leave work and come to help Rachel when they laid down together and she began to quietly cry. He held her close and stroked his hand over her hair. He kissed her forehead and waited for her to share what was ripping her apart.

“I’m not ready to take her place,” Rachel whispered as she calmed down. “My mother has been the matriarch of this small group of demigods for over two decades now. She mentored Bo-Na, she raised me and Young-Do, she even brought Eun-Sang into our circle and found her a teacher and gave her Hee-Jin for six weeks. I know she has been grooming me to take care of all of us and today I realized I’m not ready for her not to be here.”

“She’s your mother and she loves you very much.” He shifted so he could look down at her and wipe away her tears. “You aren’t even thirty. She did it one child at a time. You are a beautiful mother to Hye-Rim. You have the trust of your brother and sisters. You managed everyone wonderfully tonight. You delegated the responsibilities you couldn’t handle. You were amazing but it is okay to want your mother to be alive and here, Rachel.”

“Thank you for coming to me.” She curled her face into his shoulder and pressed her nose against his neck. She was cold and shivering so he wrestled with the blankets to wrap her up. Soon, she was asleep and her body relaxed. Hyo-Shin made sure she was deeply asleep when he heard Hye-Rim start to fuss.

He carefully got out of bed and went into the nursery. Hye-Rim sat up in the crib, looking entirely pathetic, as tears fell down her cheeks. It reminded him starkly of the last time this happened with Eun-Sang and Young-Do. He picked her up and went over to the rocking chair to sit and soothe her.

“Omma had a tough night and so did you. I wish my pretty Hye-Rim didn’t have to suffer like this,” he murmured and kissed the top of her head. “You put on a brave face for Omma, didn’t you? I miss taking care of my girls when I’m at work. Did you like playing with Cerberus the dog?”

“Yes.” Hye-Rim snuggled into his shoulder and began to settle as well. “Like puppy.”

“I’m glad.” He quietly rocked her in silence and thought she was almost asleep until she lifted her head and looked at him seriously.

“Help Omma. Omma sad.”

“I know, sweetie. I’ll do my best.”

Hye-Rim made some grumbling sounds that told him exactly what she thought of that but soon fell asleep. He put her back in the crib and intended to go back to Rachel when he heard movement from downstairs. He quietly went to look and from the top of the stairs, he saw President Lee slowly making her way to the kitchen. She was alone, which meant she left Vice President Yoon and Kang Ji-Hyuk in her room.

He thought about waking Rachel but instead decided to grab his phone and go downstairs. He tried to make enough sound that he didn’t startle his mother-in-law but that didn’t seem to matter. “Lee Hyo-Shin.” Her voice was raspy and he hurried to get her some water. “Update me. Ji-Hyuk isn’t healed.”

“Eun-Sang put him into some kind of stasis.” He placed a glass of water in front of her and sat down across from her at the dining table. “She said it took her time to figure out what was done but now that she knows, once she’s gotten enough rest, she should be able to fix it. Rachel has been managing everyone for you. She invited Vice President Yoon just in case you needed the strength of your connection. Eun-Sang and Young-Do are in your guest room, Rachel and I are in her room, and I think Bo-Na and her husband went home. Hye-Rim is talking now and Young-Do has a puppy named Cerberus.”

Her eyebrows went up before she closed her eyes. “He’s always wanted a dog. I refused because animals didn’t like him, even before he...grew into his birthright, and I didn’t want him to have too many let downs.” She smiled and for a few moments, he was a little frightened when he remembered the last time she smiled at him over the contract that saved his life. “Rachel did that. She waited to talk until she was nearly eighteen months.”

“So did I.”

“So Hye-Rim did it twice as fast.” She let out a heavy sigh and closed her eyes. Hyo-Shin didn’t know what to do until Choi Young-Do came down, holding Cerberus, in his arms. In one of his hands, he had a small plastic bag. There was something humorous about it but Hyo-Shin didn’t dare laugh. “How is Eun-Sang?”

“Angry. Just a minute.” He went out into the backyard and President Lee chuckled before he returned without the plastic bag. He must have thrown it out before returning. Young-Do set Cerberus down and the dog immediately went upstairs to Eun-Sang. No one stopped him. “She wants to do a hostile takeover.”

“That’s a good idea if you can pull it off within three days. I can’t take too much more without the government getting involved. Hee-Nam sent me a message. I want to rip her throat out.”

Hyo-Shin slowly frowned and it caught their attention. He had to make a decision. He wondered if it would cost him any part of his soul until he remembered the adorable way Hye-Rim spoke to him not more than thirty minutes ago. He still hated what Young-Do was. He hated the cavalier way they treated life outside the law even though the law had been written to fail.

His mother-in-law was a dangerous woman. His wife was a dangerous woman. But he loved her. This was his family now. He pushed forward and told himself there would be no regrets when it came to his family. Rachel saved him in so many ways. She loved him when he thought he shouldn’t be loved.

She forgave him when he didn’t feel like he deserved forgiveness.

He’d found joy and now found he would do anything to protect it.

“There is a way to do it legally.”

Sinopsis Drama Korea Vagabond

Vagabond bercerita tentang Cha Dal-Gun (Lee Seung-Gi), seorang stuntman yang memiliki kepercayaan diri yang tinggi dan tidak tahu malu.

Dibalik itu semua, ia adalah seorang yang memiliki berbagai macam sabuk hitam dari segala jenis bela diri.

Suatu ketika, Cha Dal-Gun terlibat dalam sebuah kecelakaan pesawat, hal ini pun membuat dirinya berusaha untuk mengungkapkan konspirasi di balik kecelakaan pesawat tersebut.

Namun ternyata kejadian tersebut membawanya melangkah lebih jauh lagi yang kemudian menuntutnya untuk melakukan penyelidikan sebuah kasus yang lebih besar yakni penyelidikan tentang kasus korupsi negara.

Hal ini membuatnya semakin penasaran dan ingin segera mengungkapkan apa yang sebenarnya terjadi.

Survivors of violent crimes.

That was the victim type and Young-Do struggled to understand it as he slowly figured out his prey’s next hunting ground. Kyung-Ran was able to help him narrow it down and she promised to protect the little boy this death dealer came after.

When Young-Do reached into his aura for a weapon, it produced a familiar gun with a silencer. It hadn’t ever done that before. He’d planned to lure his prey out of the city so he didn’t have to worry about it. He swallowed and looked at Kyung-Ran before she left but she just looked pleased with the development.

He took off the silencer to more easily transport his weapon before he left the hotel. He didn’t bother to wake Rachel or Hye-Rim. This had to be done tonight. Eun-Sang returned in a week and he didn’t want this hanging over his head.

All of his training with Kyung-Ran paid off. Young-Do was able to herd his prey away from the little boy while Kyung-Ran watched his back. He lured him to an alley in one of the worst sections of Seoul and after putting on his silencer, shot him in the back of the shoulder.

He whirled around and tried to shoot at Young-Do but his aura retaliated quickly. The death dealer’s eyes narrowed. “Did she teach that to you?”

“I don’t like other dealers sniffing around my deals. I do this to protect the city, not make it worse.” Young-Do didn’t wait for a reply. He shot twice, once in each eye, and the other dealer’s aura rushed into him, like air escaping a vacuum. Young-Do choked on it and vomited close to the body.

A few minutes later he was able to get to his feet. He wiped his mouth and gagged a few times before his aura settled. It was like when he made the initial deal with Kyung-Ran. Her aura felt wrong. This aura felt worse.

She waited for him at the end of the potential victim’s street under a broken lamp. It would turn on once they left the area. “The lives of children will always taste bad,” she said. “But death dealers don’t have any taboos.”

“You did. You do.”

“Yes, I am slightly less guilty than him. Can you walk or should we get a taxi?”

“We need to walk. I don’t want any record of us in this area. The ministry of justice won’t thank me for dealing one of my own kind. The task force still exists even if it is severally diminished.”

Kyung-Ran took his hand as they walked to the next district. He stumbled several times as his aura tried to…digest what he’d eaten tonight. He wished he could get rid of the life he didn’t want but that wasn’t how it worked. His phone vibrated when they were finally far enough away that he thought they could call his car to meet them.

He took it out of his pocket and his heart hurt.

My flight information is attached. Omma thinks I’m coming home with her but I’ve gotten Kang Ji-Hyuk to get me a secret car to bring me to you. I miss you. <3 Eun-Sang.

Young-Do could barely breathe and when Kyung-Ran saw the text after they got in the car, she frowned. “Turn it back on. Your aura needs to get used to how you love her or it will look at her pure life too hungrily. Text her back and then cry.”

“Omma…” He choked on the word but obeyed her. I’ll send Go Nam-Il to back you up. I can’t wait to see you. I miss you.

The truth of it ripped into him so harshly that Kyung-Ran had to support him in the elevator as the rode up to the top suite. He didn’t understand why he was crying and it got worse when he stepped into the apartment and saw Rachel holding Hye-Rim as she watched television. She looked up at him and frowned.

“What’s wrong?”

Kyung-Ran answered for him. “He feels things much more acutely than normal people. We can turn it off and go cold. He’s been cold now for five months and he needs to feel again or his aura won’t be settled when his wife returns next week.”

Rachel’s eyes widened and then she glared at him before setting Hye-Rim down in her carrier. His niece was also glaring at him. “I knew you were doing something stupid. Did you complete a deal tonight? Who?”

He smiled tightly and tried to wipe at his face. “A death dealer was sniffing around my deals to find his own victims. He was murdering survivors.”

“What’s his name?” Rachel pressed her fingers against his chest and he felt her take his connections in hand. She pulled lightly and for a moment, he briefly saw Eun-Sang before the aching loneliness eased.

“Min Joon-Gook.” He waited for the pain to come as she burned the connection between him and his victim to ash. Rachel wiped her hands on her handkerchief. She bowed to Kyung-Ran before going to pick up Hye-Rim. “Eun-Sang comes home in a week. Lee Hyo-Shin has another month in prison. You haven’t found a new place yet.”

Rachel’s back was to him but Hye-Rim glared at him over Rachel’s shoulder for her. Hye-Rim could finally lift her head and almost sit up. It was a little earlier than usual but Mother instead it was normal for their…bloodline. Hye-Rim sensed that he was against her father—a father she didn’t even know or remember and had decided to take the wrong side, the way Rachel had.

“I have places to look at tomorrow. Hye-Rim will tell me the right one. Go shower. You smell like the slums.”

He refrained from muttering that Hye-Rim was barely five months and had no ability to understand what her home should be. Maybe he didn’t like the idea that a baby was trying to punish him for wanting them both to have the best. He didn’t want them to move out but he didn’t know how to make Lee Hyo-Shin feel comfortable.

And he didn’t even want to try to do that. The last time this man felt comfortable, he recorded Rachel during sex and tried to use her to catch Young-Do.

Young-Do turned away and let Kyung-Ran help him into his bedroom. He sat down on the bed and closed his eyes. She had him loosen his tie and lay down.

“You’ll get better at turning it off and on. There is a way to isolate it. I hadn’t realized you’d done this or I would’ve explained it better.”

“It isn’t your fault,” he said. “I would’ve done it entirely anyway. Eun-Sang. Rachel. Hye-Rim. Esther’s changed her opinion of me and it’s been too much at times because I can’t trust her not to change it back. Kyung-Ran was quiet for a moment before she said, “You have two victim types. The criminals that escape justice, like your father, and those that wrong your sister. Lee Hyo-Shin did not escape justice. He declared before the world that he wronged her and he is atoning for his crimes in the only way that matters to you. Rachel has forgiven him and that is her prerogative. She doesn’t need this from him but you do. That is why you are frustrated. He stole his death back from you and death dealers don’t like it when their prey escapes through their own cunning.”

Young-Do hadn’t thought about it that way. However…

“After I killed my father, Esther made a deal with me. I was to protect Rachel from unworthy men who might hurt her heart. It was easy to make and I don’t feel like I’m in danger of breaking this deal. Killing the men who wronged her was easy. I thought I would get to kill him.”

“Probably not,” Kyung-Ran said dryly. “But you get to spend the rest of your life watching him. Isn’t that the next best thing?”

It took a moment for him to understand what she was saying. It settled that anxiety and frustration in his heart. He liked stalking his prey. Even when it was to right injustice, he enjoyed the hunt, the long patience, and that moment where it paid off.

“Yes,” he smiled, “Yes, it is.”

Silver Lining, Young-do x Hyo-shin, 22 (backstory) || anon (break my heart gwynne!!!)

His throat felt dry and his head felt heavy as he opened his eyes. He heard the steady beat of a heart rate monitor and felt someone holding his hand. Young-Do struggled to sit up but he was immediately stopped as pain shot through him and his heart rate sped up.

“Stay still, you idiot,” Hyo-Shin said tenderly as he let go of Young-Do’s hand. “You’ve got a lot of broken bones. That’s why you can’t move. Your spine and hips are fine. It’s your arms, legs, ribs, and face. Your jaw has been wired shut.”

Young-Do looked up at him and felt relief. Father hadn’t hurt him. He thought Hyo-Shin’s arm might be broken but he was using both as if nothing had happened. Good. The heart rate monitor beeped something and Hyo-Shin frowned. “What does that mean?”

“Sometimes patients are afraid and confused when they come out.” That must be a nurse.

“You’re safe,” Hyo-Shin said firmly. “No one can hurt you here. I made sure of it. Can you understand me? I need you to nod yes or no.”

Young-Do nodded and felt his headache grow but Hyo-Shin just looked happy at his response. A few minutes later the nurse left and they were alone. Hyo-Shin bowed his forehead to Young-Do’s and looked ready to cry. “I’m your guardian, okay? I’m going to get you through the surgeries and the rehabilitation. I’m going to keep you safe.”

Young-Do knew what he meant but he just didn’t want Hyo-Shin to get in the way again. Hyo-Shin escaped his father’s anger this time. Young-Do didn’t want there to be a next time. He didn’t know where Father was but it was probably good he wasn’t here. If people knew what he’d done, he could get in trouble. People wouldn’t understand it was his fault.

Father already covered it up. Young-Do wished he didn’t. He deserved to be beaten for his mistake. Beaten and demoted back to the kitchens. That’s where Father would put him when he could walk again. It was better than the thousands of people Father fired to hide his mistake and protect the company.

He wished Hyo-Shin hadn’t interfered. He wished Father waited until he returned to the estate instead of catching them smoking on the roof.

Instead, his eyes got wet and he nodded at Hyo-Shin. If there was anyone he trusted to get him through this hospital visit, it was Hyo-Shin. they were still holding hands. That’s how Young-Do realized his right hand was smashed and his left hand could move. Hyo-Shin noticed and smiled wryly.

“I think you’re lucky. You can still sign your name. I think he forgot you’re left handed.” Young-Do looked away and Hyo-Shin gently turned his face back. “You’re going to get through this. I promise. I’m going to see about getting you paper and pen so you can talk. Okay?”

The idea of being alone in this room, without Hyo-Shin, no matter how nice, terrified him. Hyo-Shin probably figured it out when his heart rate monitor started beeping. So instead of leaving, he continued to hold his good hand, and sat back down. “I’ll bother the next nurse.”

It was about a week later when he realized his father hadn’t come to visit him. He didn’t know what to think. He was having surgery after surgery, mostly to put his face back together or stick rods in his legs, and his rehabilitation would start soon. He was worried about Hyo-Shin. His handwriting suffered from the tremors in his hands but he was able to get out--Work?

“I took a leave of absence,” he said. “I’ll go back when you’re on your feet again.” Young-Do tried to give him a look to indicate how foolish he thought he was but Hyo-Shin just smiled and touched his hand. “This is where I should be. I want to take care of you. I make an excellent wife, don’t I? You should keep me when this is settled.”

He flushed and his heart sped up. His ears felt very hot. Stop flirting. It isn’t fair.

“I don’t play fair,” he teased. “I play for keeps and I’m keeping you. Why else would I go through all this trouble?”

Young-Do looked away and his eyes stung. Hyo-Shin took his hand and to Young-Do’s shock, he bent down and kissed his forehead. “You’re an idiot. Relax your jaw. Remember, the doctor said if you tense up too much, it will interfere with the healing. I miss your voice.”

Hyo-Shin got him through the last of the surgeries and the day they took everything off of his jaw. Young-Do had so many questions about his father, the company, who was paying for all of this medical care but he had to hold them back through his first round of physical therapy.

Go Nam-Il visited him twice and Young-Do was just glad they were two, quiet men. His teacher put his hand on his shoulder and only said, “I am glad you are alive, Choi Young-Do. I will help with your judo recovery as much as possible. I was able to look at your physical therapy projections and they look good. We will get you back in the ring.”

“Thank you.”

Nearly three months into his hospital stay, Young-Do was attempting to eat whatever bland stew the hospital provided when there was a knock on his door. Hyo-Shin stood and paled slightly when a man in a suit entered. It took Young-Do a moment to recognize Director Kang Ji-Hyuk. His stomach sank. Father remembered he existed. It took him longer and shorter than he wanted.

“You were supposed to give him more time,” Hyo-Shin snapped. “He’s not fully recovered.”

“I have spoken with his medical team and they informed me he is progressing ahead of schedule, most likely due to the fact, with the exception of his smoking, he is in incredible shape. It has been long enough. We need to reassure the remaining shareholders.”

Young-Do missed smoking but he was on too many drugs to really care. It hurt to speak so he wasn’t really doing much of it. “What is going on?”

Director Kang tilted his head and smiled tightly. “I assumed you were keeping him informed. That is why I haven’t sent him a secretary.”

Hyo-Shin just looked angry. “All that mattered was his recovery. I planned on telling him when he couldn’t hurt himself.”

“Oh dear.” Director Kang just bowed before giving Young-Do the information Hyo-Shin was clearly withholding from him. “In lieu of your father’s incarceration for corruption, we have restructured Zeus Hotels. As the primary shareholder, we voted you in as company president this morning, and set the date to instate you for when you are set to be excused from the hospital. A security team has been placed outside your door and I will have a secretary sent to keep you informed of anything that might need your immediate attention, President Choi.”

“Prison?” Young-Do looked at Hyo-Shin, who shook with anger, while Director Kang set an envelope down in front of him. It had Father’s handwriting and his name on it.

“It took too long for the police to arrive,” Hyo-Shin snapped. “You were bleeding everywhere and unconscious. He attacked a prosecutor and the son of the Prosecutor General. What do you think happened?”

“That isn’t corruption!”

Hyo-Shin wouldn’t look at him. He swallowed twice with tears in his eyes. “My father has been trying to get him for corruption for nearly twenty years now. Your mistake provided the evidence he needed. I gave it to him because this will keep him in prison for ten years instead of just five. The law cares more about money than it does about beating your child to death.”

“The law cares about prosecutors more. You could’ve--”

“You never would’ve forgiven me. You would’ve come to me and begged me to spare his life. You would’ve given me bullshit on how you deserved it and I don’t want to listen to your bullshit. You now have ten years to make this company your own and make it something he can’t take away from you. When he gets out, he’ll be a small, weak man, and you can see him for what he is. He will never lay his hands on you again.”

Young-Do couldn’t breathe and his heart monitor started screaming. They said betrayal felt like a knife to the lungs. This felt like his entire body was on fire and he would never recover. “I trusted you and you took my father away from me? You used me against my father?”

Hyo-Shin’s eyes widened before he clenched his jaw. “I love you. That’s why I protected you.”

“Liar.” What else had Hyo-Shin kept from him while he laid here in the hospital? Why didn’t he tell him he had a company? He had to save it. He had to fix it. Father would forgive him if he fixed it. “Get out. I never want to see you again.”

“Young-Do--”

“Director Kang, you said there were security outside? Have them escort Prosecutor Lee to his car. I don’t want him anywhere near me.” Young-Do ignored the tears streaming down both of their faces.

“Young-Do...please. I love you.” Young-Do ripped his hand away because he couldn’t shove Hyo-Shin back. So much of his body was immobilized still. Weak. Dependent. Vulnerable. Hyo-Shin was exactly what Father said he was--a selfish user.

Love. Hyo-Shin used that phrase too easily with him. So often Young-Do almost believed it until this moment. Three months worth of lies. Three months where Young-Do gave his father nothing but silence while he sat in prison. How many more people had lost their jobs? He hadn’t looked at the stock in three months. And now he was president?

Now, he could never tell Hyo-Shin he loved him back. Young-Do always knew his love was shit and this proved it.

“Fuck you. Get. Out.”

Director Kang obeyed him. Hyo-Shin was removed from his sight and that’s all he cared about. Once he was alone, Young-Do sobbed himself to sleep. He’d lost everything that ever mattered. All he had was his dying company.

chapter 21

“Absolutely not. This is a fashion meeting. I am dressing you. You are not taking a single one of your pantsuits.” Rachel began taking things out of her suitcase and Eun-Sang knew she should give up now but she was cranky.

“Rachel—“

“I have marked which ones to wear to what meeting.” She wrinkled her nose at Eun-Sang’s favorite pantsuit as she started pulling clothes out of the massive garment bag she brought with her. “You are wearing heels. No argument. I promise, if you look like you know how to dress yourself, you will get this contract. I want you to wear mascara at the very least.”

“Rachel—“

“I’ve only included one cocktail dress and one gown. All your business meetings are in pants, President Cha. This is the fashion industry. Michael Park will be in tailored suits of unconventional colors. His hair will be done by a professional. If you would let me send my girl with you, you would be stunning, Eun-Sang. You have to be stunning.”

“Your girl is Kang Ye-Sol, who hates me. You don’t want to be without her for a week.” Eun-Sang plopped down on her bed and wrinkled her nose. “I’m not stunning. I’m only going to show confidence for my team. I should blend in.”

“Absolutely not.” Eun-Sang gave up after the second time and let Rachel pack the rest of her luggage. Rachel tilted her head and wrinkled her nose after a moment. “Michael is going to try and hit on you.”

Eun-Sang groaned and flopped back. It was her least favorite thing about being a young, female president. A moment later, Rachel joined her and curled up against her side. “Am I too bossy right now?”

“You’re bossy and right so I’m not fighting it too much. Hair up or down?”

“I put instructions with each outfit.” Eun-Sang smiled when Rachel started getting cuddly. “I wish I could go with you. I really would send Ye-Sol with you. She would behave for me and make you the prettiest woman they’d ever seen.”

“I know we live in a world where appearance matters but I don’t want it to be the reason I get this contract. I have a great team and I think they could do an amazing job. That’s all that should matter. Thank you. I wouldn’t have thought about this.”

“That is why I put it together. When do you leave?”

“Tomorrow night.” She didn’t know why she was nervous. She excelled at meetings like this. Her English was very good after a year abroad and Michael was still untested. She studied American business during that year. She interned at a marketing company, not Michael’s, but their largest competitor. Her resume was solid. “I’m taking my team, plus a member of Young-Do’s opposition research team. He put together a summary of the mistakes Michael has made in the last three years. I don’t want to use it.”

“Michael has a list of all your flaws and your father’s flaws. He will absolutely use it during private negotiations. I’m going to send you with a makeup artist.” She rolled onto her side and looked down at Eun-Sang with surprising gentility. “I want you to get this. What’s wrong? I thought you and Bo-Na made up.”

Bo-Na insisted on their weekly lunch and Eun-Sang didn’t dissuade her. They did need to return to something normal after their argument. Eun-Sang didn’t know when she became one of those women who chose her husband over her friends but it felt like she had because she was still upset at the insult to Young-Do.

“We did. I just wish she took my relationship with Young-Do as seriously as she takes her relationship with Chan-Young. It matters to me and I think it hurts that she doesn’t care about how important it is for me to succeed here.”

Rachel sighed softly and stroked her hair away from her forehead. “Are you falling in love with him?”

“No. We don’t spend enough time together for that to happen. I still love Hyo-Shin even though I’m angry at him, too, for needing to check up on us.”

“It was an asshole move,” Rachel agreed.

“Did you know they were friends?”

Rachel hesitated. “Eun-Sang, I think they were lovers. You know how Hyo-Shin flirts with everyone. They were very close and there were a lot of rumors about them in high school.”

You must love him.

Very much.

She closed her eyes and tried to pretend she hadn’t walked into a huge mess. Whatever Young-Do’s sexuality was, it included her, and that’s all that mattered to her. There was nothing forced about the sex they had. It was the same with Hyo-Shin. He never mentioned he might be bisexual and he very much desired her.

“It isn’t fair,” she said after a moment, “That he has the power to mess up two people as much as he has. I miss him. I just want him to explain himself but I can’t be in the same room with him without losing all the ground I’ve gained with Young-Do.”

“You’re right. It isn’t fair. Men are not worth it, Eun-Sang. One of the many reasons to consider lesbianism in your next life.” Rachel kissed the corner of her mouth and it made Eun-Sang giggle. She rolled over onto her side so she could snuggle up to her. Rachel held her and it was so very comforting. “I will convert you and steal you away from all men.”

“You cannot convert something that isn’t there.”

“Stop using my words against me. That was for my mother.” Rachel kissed the top of her head. “Do you feel better?”

“No.” She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. “Do you think if I asked nicely, Young-Do would let me take a few pictures of him half naked so I could deter any man who hits on me?”

“I think he would be honored and pleased if you wanted a few pictures of that but you might have to give him a few pictures in return.” She sat up and got off the bed. “Also, I have a gift for you, just in case you wanted to renegotiate the terms of your relationship with him.”

“Renegotiate?” Eun-Sang followed her as Rachel pulled out a piece of red lingerie. “Oh. I don’t think he’s into lingerie.”

“Men are into lingerie. Even if it is just ripping it off. This will rip off well. I already tested it with Ye-Sol.”

“I do not get your relationship with her. Do you two ever talk about anything real?” Rachel just shrugged and pushed her into the bathroom. Eun-Sang acquiesced and had to admit that Rachel knew how to make women feel beautiful in anything she stuck them in.

“You should wear whatever rock Choi Young-Do got you. Didn’t he get you a monster?”

That was how she ended up in her closet after Rachel left, going through her jewelry and looking for her ring. Young-Do found her searching for it in the red thing Rachel put on her. Rachel knew how to make lingerie comfortable so she hadn’t bothered to change. “What are you doing?”

“Trying to figure out how to deter men.” She wrinkled her nose. “Where’s my engagement ring?”

“What you are wearing is not going to deter men.” He went over to the safe they kept in their closet and after scrolling through the combination lock, he opened it and pulled out the jewelry box. “What do you need this for?”

He opened the box and she winced. “That is so ostentatious. I can’t take that with me. Put it back. I’m a married woman going to another country for business. I want to avoid getting hit on by strange men. Do you have any sexy pictures of yourself that you sent to your other girlfriends that I can use?”

It was fun to make his eyebrows go up but he pulled out his phone and went through his pictures. “I have never sent a woman a picture of my dick.”

“You should send me one,” she said flatly. “I think you would scare away even the most persistent of paramours. No doesn’t always work and you’re not coming with me.”

“I am not sending you a dick pic to show other men.” Eun-Sang looped her fingers in his belt and tugged him against her. She gave him the most adorable pout she could think of as he rubbed his hands up and down her back. “You could just stay here and not go. Your team has this and you’re not doing the presentation.”

At least he wasn’t a fool to think she could avoid getting hit on.

Eun-Sang wrinkled her nose. “Do you need a picture of me? I’ll take one for you.”

“No.” His ears went red. “I’ll get you your picture. After.”

Young-Do lifted her up and slung her over his shoulder, much to her delight, as he walked out of the closet and into their bedroom with a playful nip at her bum.

"Let's go through it again."

Hyo-Shin rubbed at his eyes and tried not to feel exhausted. He knew all the interrogation tricks but he just wanted to go home to Rachel. Lee Esther warned that this would take longer than he thought but he hadn't believed her.

He’d been going for hours. It was probably close to sunrise.

"Death dealers carry their weapons in their auras. I did not go into that interrogation room with a gun. If you look at the evidence, you will see that the bullet--"

"You are still insisting that Yoo Kyung-Ran shot Special Prosecutor Jeon Hyun-Joo? She was tied up with multiple knots, Prosecutor Lee. She carried no weapons. What you are talking about is impossible. The eyes are still intact."

"I told you about the acupuncture needles." A lump formed in his throat and he felt truly afraid for a few seconds. He was being setup to take the fall for this.

"There was no evidence in her eyes that they had been pierced by anything. Your story has no basis in reality." There was a vicious leer in the slant of the interrogator's mouth. "Did you really think you could help a death dealer escape and not suffer the consequences?" He paused and then opened a folder and shoved it at Hyo-Shin.

"When did the Death Dealer of Seoul contract you to help his mother escape?"

There were pictures, logs, CCTV footage, physical evidence of his time with Rachel, the times he came into contact with Choi Young-Do, even evidence he was Hye-Rim's father. He carefully went through the evidence package. They were still using him to get to Choi Young-Do through Rachel.

He was so fucked.

“Is there any evidence he’s come into contact with his mother since she was convicted and sent to prison?”

"Or was it Yoo Rachel who asked you to do it?" That meant they had nothing. After spending over a year trying to find ways to trap Choi Young-Do, Hyo-Shin was convinced they couldn’t do it. Rachel protected him too well. Choi Young-Do was too smart and knew how to use his abilities to stay hidden.

They just didn’t know enough about death dealers.

If he was fucked, he might as well do it Lee Esther's way. He might return to Rachel and Hye-Rim faster if he did. And he was so fucked.

"I want an attorney. I won't make a statement until I speak to one." He closed the folder. "I won't confess to the murder of Jeon Hyun-Joo. There is probably an attorney out there already. You should get my father on the phone, at the very least. I have to deliver a message to him."

The prosecutor made several more attempts to talk to him but Hyo-Shin remained silent. He was left alone for nearly an hour before the door opened to reveal his father. He automatically stood and bowed. Father sat down, clearly unhappy and furious with him, before gesturing to the camera in the corner.

"It is still on. This is evidence."

"What deal did you make with Yoo Kyung-Ran?" Father's eyes widened only a little bit before he leaned back uncomfortably in his chair. Hyo-Shin had yet to sit back down. It felt more familiar as he took off his jacket and rolled up his sleeves. "She gave a very intense monologue before she shot Hyun-Joo."

"What an abject failure of a woman," he said dismissively. "You always had poor taste."

Hyo-Shin ignored that.

"What deal did you make with the first Death Dealer of Seoul, Abeoji? What deal did you break?"

"I don't know what you're talking about. Yoo Kyung-Ran--"

"After two decades of feeding off our city, she spontaneously decides to get caught and confess to the murder of four hundred people. What did you offer her? What was the deal?" Hyo-Shin knew he would never break his father. "She is going to kill you. That was what she said to me. You broke her deal and there is a price for that. It's new information. I didn't know--"

"She is a murderer," Father snapped. "She lies. There was no deal."

"She pled guilty to four hundred deaths, Abeoji. You handled her case yourself. You must have believed her then." Hyo-Shin decided leaning against the cool concrete wall would feel better. He briefly closed his eyes. "She murdered my superior in front of me. I'm not trying to defend her. I'm trying to warn you. I don't know what precautions you can take--"

"It is none of your concern. You let her escape."

"Let?" It was just so laughable. "She had a gun to my head and a death aura capable of ripping me apart. I'm a husband and father now. Rachel had her baby today. I have obligations. My life doesn't belong to me or to the law. It belongs to them."

"You are a shameful waste. I know that marriage isn't real," Father said it with such disgust. "I will prove the documents are fake so you will be forced to testify to the truth. Yoo Rachel controls the Death Dealer of Seoul. You will not be able to protect her."

He would. He would die before he let Rachel go to jail.

"You have no proof, just Hyun-Joo's speculation. You can't go up against President Ma again and lose." It was such a minor case but it was always stuck in his father's throat like a sharp piece of glass he couldn't swallow. If Victory Law was on Esther's payroll, they would decimate his father and his legacy. "You've been avoiding it for almost a decade, Abeoji."

"I'm not afraid of that woman or her lawyers."

Hyo-Shin almost asked, Which one? Instead he closed his eyes and braced himself against the table. "I did not kill Hyun-Joo. My crime is deceiving Yoo Rachel while she was a person of interest and continuing that relationship for my own selfish reasons. I am her husband and the father of her child but even if I weren't, there is no crime she's committed that I can testify to. I have never seen her make a deal."

Father glared at him coldly.

"Prosecutor Im will handle the charges." Father stood and shoved his chair back under the table. "That woman and her child aren't going on my family registry. I won't recognize them. She is a sociopath and just as guilty of murder as her brother. You could stop her but you are too weak. You always had poor taste. This time people will die for it."

"I've seen the victim list," Hyo-Shin heard himself saying. "No one is missing these men. Especially, not their victims. Our city is a cesspool of scum who feed on the misery of the weak and vulnerable. It is the corruption of the judiciary that allowed it to be a feeding ground for a death dealer who deals in violent criminals."

He intended to just let his father go when Prosecutor Im burst into the room. "Prosecutor General Lee, you need to see this. Yoo Kyung-Ran put a recording of herself online and all the major networks have picked it up. We're analyzing it now to figure out where she filmed it. She is confessing to all of Choi Young-Do's deals."

Hyo-Shin followed them out and watched the breaking news on a loop. She'd done this once before, five years ago, with her own list. She gave a name, location, and date for her final deal so they could arrest her. This time, she just listed off about fifty names Hyo-Shin was very familiar with after a year on the task force for Choi Young-Do.

"Finally," her image on the television said. "I will come for Lee Chan-Hyuk. There are consequences to breaking a deal that he cannot avoid."

Hyo-Shin briefly closed his eyes as a man came up to him. "Are you my lawyer?"

"My name is Kang Ji-Hyuk. President Lee Esther sent me."

Mama’s assessment made very little sense to her. “There is nothing—“

Death dealers are the exception to every rule. I know I taught you that.

Mama sat down and her assistant placed a folder on the table next to Eun-Sang before bowing and leaving them alone. A waiter came and took their order. Eun-Sang translated for her mother and tried to keep her breathing even.

Mama taught her about death dealers when she ripped one apart. After what she did to Young-Do, Eun-Sang tried to hide her nightmares from him.

“Why do I have an aura? It can’t be sex.”

It is. I can get rid of it for you. Today. Here. I can’t promise it won’t come back unless you stop screwing him. Mama’s hands were always so harsh and cold when she spoke. They learned sign language together. It was the only time Eun-Sang had been allowed back into Seoul before she became an adult. It took nine months. I can save you from this mistake as many times as it takes until you give him up.

“I won’t, Omma. You know that. You can see that I love him. My healing is still strong. Look. I fixed him.” Tears stung her eyes when Eun-Sang realized Mama wouldn’t even look at Young-Do. Maybe it was for the best. Maybe it would keep away the temptation to kill him.

Yes, Mama said after a minute of silence. I can see what you did. Open the folder. The board wants to make an agreement with you. That is your employee contract.

“You gave the police his gun,” Eun-Sang hissed as she curled her fingers into fists in her lap. “It is too soon to talk about this! I married him because I love him. He isn’t like the others.”

I am not here to listen to your naïveté. It is embarrassing. I need you. You know I spend time travelling to our subsidiaries. I have to introduce you to the Vault again. I can give you four months to come to your senses.

“It will be six or I will abdicate.” Eun-Sang started to stand. Maybe she could find someone else to help her understand what was going on with her body. Esther seemed to know everyone and everything. As much as she hated to bow her head to anyone, Esther didn’t try to kill her or Young-Do. She hated that this was her line right now.

Wait. Read the contract and I will make it six.

Mama had to be desperate. Eun-Sang had never seen her compromise before. She stayed in her seat and opened up the folder. It was not a bad contract until she got to the end. “Omma, this is a little too Persephone and Demeter. I can’t live with you for six months straight. I am a married woman. I belong with my husband. What if I get pregnant? I’ll need him.”

You know how important it is that I have you by my side during contract negotiations. I don’t speak the languages you do. I rely on you, Eun-Sang. I need you.

Eun-Sang closed her eyes but didn’t sign the contract. She swallowed and put her seal in her purse. At least it was good Mama brought it with her. Eun-Sang needed it for other things. She picked up the pen and crossed out the six-month homesteading clause. What happened when she got pregnant and they were ready to start a family? A six-month separation like that could…ruin their relationship. She wasn’t ready to just give into Mama’s sweeping declarations.

“When I am in Seoul, I will live with my husband. We will talk about this another time. If you’re not going to help me today, I will just talk to President Lee. She might know someone better who will be honest with me.”

Mama sighed and looked away. Very well. Come here. I need to touch you for this.

Eun-Sang stood and Mama put her hands on the back of her neck and against her stomach. There was a rush that made her dizzy as Mama pushed the death aura away from her. She immediately felt better and the edges of her skin were no longer blurry with anger. She fell back in her seat and closed her eyes.

You may feel ill for the rest of the day. It will pass quickly. Do not try to heal yourself. To Eun-Sang’s shock, Mama waved Young-Do over to her. Her assistant quickly joined them as well, probably because Mama knew Eun-Sang would not translate her next words. Young-Do’s stance was very defensive and Eun-Sang couldn’t blame him, especially since Mama was smirking. She will need rest. If you loved her, you would never touch her again. You are the only one who can stop this from repeating itself.

Then Mama left, the contract still on the table. Young-Do sat down next to her after putting a cold glass of water into her hands. “What does she have against sex?”

“I do not know,” Eun-Sang muttered after draining the glass. “It’s…hard…to know that she only got pregnant with me to fulfill an obligation to our company and use the pure life potential of a birth to fix her powers. I know she loves me. There are times I felt like her entire world. But…this is my life. I want it with you, in our home, making our garden beautiful, with three or four little ones running around.”

He raised his eyebrows and she caught him trying not to grin. “Three or four?”

“The number is negotiable,” she teased and giggled when he bent over to kiss her. “Let’s just sit here. I feel dizzy and nauseous.”

“Do you know what she did? After she touched you, the aura just left like it had been cut out of you. I was worried for a few seconds. You didn’t look good after she did it.”

It worried Eun-Sang too. She didn’t see what Mama did, so she couldn’t replicate it if it did come back. She could feel Young-Do’s aura on the edge of her skin but it didn’t scare her the way this one had. “I should talk to President Lee anyway,” Eun-Sang said with a sigh as she scooted her chair closer to his. Young-Do waved over a server before running his fingers through her hair. “She’s so well connected. She might know more than my mother is letting on.”

“You don’t have to be defensive. I know why you don’t like her and it makes me…twistedly happy,” Young-Do teased. “I mentioned why we were talking to Park Hee-Nam to her when I asked her to be on standby for us. All she said was, Huh.”

“Never mind,” Eun-Sang groused after he ordered dinner for them. She liked letting him pick when they came to places like this. He always had fun deciding what she might enjoy. So far, he’d never been wrong. “What is it with our cryptic moms?”

“We’re adults. They have to find ways to control us somehow.”

Eun-Sang wanted to argue with him but he was right. Mama couldn’t handle it that she wanted something other than guarding the Vault. “I miss my store,” she said to herself. “I miss interacting with people and helping them find the perfect plants. I wish I could find my mother’s enemies, end them, and have my own life.”

Young-Do gently put his hand on her knee. “I can do that for you.”

She took his hand and kissed his palm. “I know you can. I’d rather you not. I know how dealing death wears on you. I would like to spare you that as much as possible. Young-Do…you’re fading and it’s scaring me. Are you putting off the next deal because…”

“Because it will fuck up our ability to have children and you will need to start all over again?” He pulled away from her and leaned back in his chair. She often forgot how different he was with her than with everyone else. His face became tight and hard, his shoulders broader, and no movement was wasted. She hated it. She liked her warm and caring man much better.

“I can’t be a single mother.” She didn’t take his hand even though she wanted to. Young-Do needed his space right now even though it pained her to give it to him. “I need you to be here, with me, as a father. I look at Rachel and she is so strong but so miserable without Lee Hyo-Shin. I’m too weak to do it without you.”

“Eun-Sang, I don’t want you to do it without me either. I just…I’m sorry. It is affecting me more than I want to admit. I’ll talk to Rachel about making a deal.” It relieved her more than she cared to acknowledge, too. Their food arrived and they ate quietly. At least, during the drive home, Young-Do put his arm over her shoulders and let her snuggle into his side. His phone buzzed with a text and he pulled it out. A moment later, he sighed. “Kang Ji-Hyuk wants to speak to you again. He’s at the hotel.”

“I’m sure he has my phone number. Why isn’t he using it?” It made her a little cranky but she was mollified when Young-Do ran his hand over her hair and pulled her a little bit closer. “I don’t know what this could be about. Omma would not have told the board I was sick.”

“He might be sleeping with Esther,” Young-Do said quietly. “Rachel called him her new toy under her breath last week. I did tell my step-mother about today.”

That surprised Eun-Sang. She hadn’t really thought Kang Ji-Hyuk’s haunted looks were that appealing and he was so much younger that Lee Esther. She also thought he was one of the few people Mama really trusted. He knew about her existence long before anyone else did. She spent a summer watched by him.

“He used to be one of my babysitters,” Eun-Sang finally said. “This feels a little like babysitting.”

“Rachel can tell him to leave and wait for you to contact him.”

Eun-Sang wrinkled her nose and pulled her feet up on the seat so she could wrap her arm around his waist and just feel safe curled up beside him. “The police have your gun. I know you’re not worried but I am. She didn’t try to kill you today. I think this just means she’s trying to separate us another way.”

“That’s a fair assessment. I’ll have him wait in the lobby.”

A dull pain twisted in her lower stomach and she groaned. Young-Do was immediately attentive. “What’s wrong?”

“I think my period is starting. I’ve been off these last few months and it is about to take revenge on me.” He rubbed at her back and she hoped he would be up to cuddling with her in the next few hours. She would need to sit in their garden to feel better after taking a few supplements. Young-Do held her hand as they walked into the lobby.

Kang Ji-Hyuk sat on one of the couches and held a folder when he stood to bow to her. She came up and tried not to let her growing ache make her too cranky. He offered her the folder. “You turned twenty-five two months ago. This is overdue. These are your shares. It is a high enough percentage point to allow you a seat on the board. We took the paperwork from your mother after we learned that she’d reported the incident at Park Botanicals to the police.”

“Who is We?” Eun-Sang quickly flipped through it and her eyebrows went up when she saw that most members of the board personally donated their shares to make her practically equal with Mama.

Kang Ji-Hyuk just smiled placidly and didn’t answer. “Our company must have a healer of your bloodline as president. President Park has become obsessed and paranoid with your relationship to Choi Young-Do. While a male death dealer has never fathered a child, our experts remain confident that he can with your help. We are grateful for all the work and effort President Park has put into the company but it is coming time for her to retire. You are our chosen successor, Agassi.”

“Until I become obsessed and paranoid with something you don’t approve of?” Mama dedicated her entire life to the company. She did not deserve to be ousted this way. Eun-Sang couldn’t do this to her. She would accept her shares but it would not be the swing vote they hoped for. Eun-Sang refused to betray Mama this way.

“That is what a board of directors is for, Agassi. We must keep the company stable. The Vault depends on it. The world depends on it.”

“If that were true, you would release the rights to all of our seeds, and let farmers buy them wholesale.” Eun-Sang had seen famine ravage countries in her youth. Mama tried to keep it from her but the best place to hide a young girl was in a country no one cared about. Their biggest fight, after the death dealer who tried to kill her, was about the proprietary GMO formulas they had the rights to.

“You know we cannot do that, Agassi. I will await your response. Our first board meeting is in two months. We look forward to your participation.” He bowed and left. Young-Do shifted uncomfortably next to her.

“Do you want to talk about it? They are setting you up for an inheritance war against your mother.”

“Did you know we own the rights to flood resistant rice?” Eun-Sang said it as they walked to the elevator. “Do you know how many farmers, how many peoples, how many countries’ lives would better if they have access to flood resistant rice? Do you know how often seasonal crops fail and the world is on the brink of starvation?”

“I don’t.” He kissed the top of her head and she felt dizzy and nauseous all over again. “I can tell you how many people, on a given night, are cheating on their spouses though.”

“That is also depressing. I’m about to fall over.” Young-Do immediately caught her when her legs gave out. He lifted her up and she grunted in pain. He carried her out of the elevator and into the suite. “I just need my garden. I have plants and trees that help me…center…”

Young-Do stopped short and they stared at their garden in shock. “What the fuck?”

It was dead.
