I know it's not
everybody’s favorite but I cherish this current cold weather because it brought in the birds! The last two days have been awesome, with more activity than in the last few months. The female Purple Finch is still around, as well as a White-throated Sparrow. It felt like everybody stopped by to say Hi.

This guy flew into my window. Thanks to Reddit, I knew he probably knocked himself out. I was able to hold him and keep him warm for about 20 mins as he recovered. Jumped around on me for a few minutes before flying off! He's a redbellied woodpecker.

The year
started out fun and with lots of red. This male Red-bellied Woodpecker came with blush! He seems to be new, the other one I normally see has a lot less red. He is spectacular 😍

We had a beautiful day today.  My friend and I took our walk down by the river.....I didn’t take any pictures but we saw a Great Blue Heron on the riverbank and what was probably a bald eagle flying along the river.  I say probably because osprey are about the same size and my friend the birder says they have similar flying styles.
There were all the usual birds as well - lots of cardinals, bluebirds, robins, bluejays and many I’m not able to identify yet.  And there was a herd of six deer on the “road” side of the river which was unusual.  I’m guessing there is something growing that they particularly like, and with the stay at home order, there are fewer people out on the trails to disturb them
I’m trying to learn to identify the birds of this area, and one of the things that helps is if I’m able to take a picture - and then I can go back later and look up what I saw.  That’s why the first two pictures were taken.  I have a lot of woodpeckers in my yard - that one is a redbellied woodpecker.  Which I think makes no sense because it doesn’t have a red belly as far as I could tell.
The other photo is a tufted titmouse.....a cute little bird with a mohawk :).
And finally.......I was looking through the kitchen window this evening and noticed a couple of deer in the yard.  I went quietly out to the screenroom, and although they were a bit skittish at first - they didn’t run off.  In fact, it turns out that two of them were lying down in the grass.  In all there were six out there, and they stayed around for a good fifteen minutes before they gracefully headed across the creek and off to wherever they spend their evenings.
It won’t be long before I”m battling the deer - this year the bird feeders are up too high for them to reach - but the hosta is in trouble unless I can figure out some way to fence it in.  Deer carry ticks, which is always a concern for me, and deer pee smells awful on a hot day.
For now though,  it was am amazing reminder of how lucky I am to have nature in my yard.

proof by robertskirk1 The 'book' says that the red-bellied woodpecker eats beetles and a variety of insects and ants, occasionally eating a lizard (and other plant and animal things). We saw this woodpecker conduct a fast chase 'fly-walking' around the tree circling two and a half times to catch this lizard. First time for us. Taken 6-23-2019 in Land Yacht Harbor, Florida. https://flic.kr/p/2gn5Mxh
