'49th Parallel' – WWII on Canadian soil on Max and Criterion Channel
During World War II, Michael Powell and his writer/producer partner Emeric Pressburger were enlisted to make films in support of the British war effort, but while many of their contemporaries turned out routine thrillers Powell and Pressburger created inventive dramas with a patriotic purpose. Their wartime adventure 49th Parallel (1941), about a small German U-Boat crew stranded in Canada off…

And yet, when one's irreverence has wreaked its worst upon Olivier's Shakespeare, from a quarter of a century's distance, another interpretation of their hollowness begins to appear, which may one day vindicate them. Their lack of conviction results, not only from Olivier's acquiescence in the spirit of their age, but from a scepticism which is not quite aware of itself. For what Olivier treats with unconscious criticism is both the film medium, and the plays. The shifting stylizations of Henry V oddly prefigure Godard's use of the non-realistic, the non-conviction of life seen through the filter of an art which distorts (the medieval perspectives). The theme Olivier saw in Hamlet is a Godardian one - 'Hamlet is the story of a man who cannot make up his mind' - and its surface conventionality is belied by something in Olivier's screen personality, something hard, stony, resentful, something that rebels, from within, against Hamlet's sensitivity, because it sees through it, as a Commissar or a Castro might have seen through it. If Richard III confides to the audience, it is because Olivier has gone half way to converting him from villain to hero; only a little more cynicism would have been needed for Machiavellian realpolitik to have cut through the whole iridescent spider-web of Tudor propaganda. Behind all these plays looms the shadowy figure of - The Entertainer.

Pat Andrea was born in 1942 in The Hague, Netherlands. He is the son of the illustrator Metty Naezer and the painter Kees Andrea.
From 1960 to 1965, Pat Andrea studied at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, where he was a student of the painter Co Westerik. Along with Walter Nobbe and Peter Blokhuis, he founded the ABN Group (from their initials: A ndrea, B lokhuis, N obbe ). They came to be associated with the Nieuwe Haagse School.
In 1977, Jean Clair invited him to participate in the exhibition La nouvelle subjectivité in the Paris Fall Festival, along with Jim Dine, David Hockney, R. B. Kitaj, Raymond Mason, and Olivier O. Olivier.
He traveled to Latin America and settled in Buenos Aires, where he remained for several years. From 1989 he started to make sculptures in bronze.
Pat Andrea teaches at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
Locating himself between Francis Bacon and Balthus ("entre Bacon et Balthus"), Pat Andrea has developed a figurative painting style depicting an ambiguous and murky universe.

I am so curious about Olivie, please how the hell is she playing “hard to get” with a DEAD HOUR and KISSING THE RENDING?! And apparently getting fun little powers from the sunflower king??? She sounds fabulous and I hope she ruins everyone’s day forever.
I have every confidence in her ability to do that.
Olivie is a very talented occultist, and has been the private student to two very experienced sorcerers.
The first she met when she was only fifteen: a Rending cultist in Arras who was preparing for the coming of the Plague. That cultist needed a creature in order to bring her plans to fruition, and Olivie was near to hand, and full of dazzling and reckless ambition. For three years Olivie learned from and aided that wicked agent, while the cultist transformed her own husband (the mayor of Arras) into an avatar of the Rending's power.
But the Rending liked Olivie even more than Its cultist did. And whatever passed between Olivie and that twisted, inhuman shape on the bed - whenever Olivie slipped past her mistress to let him whisper in her ear - certainly included 'a kiss.'
Bastian managed to kill the transformed mayor, and the cultist, but Olivie escaped. She went to join an old friend of her now-deceased mistress: a former acolyte of Lord Raymond the Cathar's, now an Ecdysiast cultist. The Ecdysiast has only slightly less rotten vibes than the Rending, so communion with him came naturally to Olivie. She has so far refrained from petitioning him, however: he means to overpower her, and she doesn't intend to let that happen.
She came relatively late to Sunflower King veneration, but it was a natural fit, along their shared axis of Grail. The Sunflower King has a real 'all shall love me and despair' energy that Olivie had no trouble locking into. Now in combat she can just randomly paralyze people with the horror of her greatness and beauty. It suits her.
In the last session, Bastian left Olivie behind with the young king of France for whom Bastian is prosecuting a civil war, and intends to betray for his crown. She'll have a year with him: and a year in proximity to Lord Raymond, and the Sunflower King calendar cultists under Philippe de la Marche. I'm sure she'll make something just wonderful out of this unexpected opportunity.

Have any fears: Ah. Well. A severe fear of heights; an airship ride rendered him practically useless. Also his father; There are a LOT of tangled emotions there, but he both fears him and still loves him, despite what he's done.
FAMILY
A bit of a mess:
His mother is Joanne Vastervoort, a mostly solitary monsterhunter. Was not considered a noble, had a child with Raymond (Olivier's Father), Lunera. Raymond came back years later and demanded another child now that Joanne was considered a noble; This one produced the Aasimar he wanted.
Olivier was raised mostly by his Dad, with occasional visits to his Mother. It was Not a Good Time with dad, who exerted extreme control over Olivier.
His stepfather is named Furness, a gnome commoner who loves making guns. Firness has 3 half-gnome children with Joanne: Juno and Charme (18yo), twins, and Novis (16yo).
Olivier adores his siblings (Full and half) greatly, and equally... But Olivier is considered the only Noble, and heir, of his family.
And Olivier has no idea where ANY of them are at the moment.
Tumblr media
A snip of a picture I did of his Serious side vs his "Radiant Revelation/We're gonna get them" rage side. .....Ignore the fact his hands don't have the gradient fade, I literally forgot cause I got absorbed in just shading skin LOL.
The fullbody is by 0LHA0 on Deviantart!

From today’s New York Times opinion columnists discussion between Bret Stephens and Gail Collins. (01/08/23)
Gail: Bret, not having really kept up on the Spacey situation, I’m going to have to defer to you.
Bret: This is Spacey’s second acquittal, after last year’s in a case brought in New York by the actor Anthony Rapp. What bothers me is that even now, Spacey will face an “uphill battle” to get major roles again, according to a report in The Times. He’s one of the greatest actors alive, the Laurence Olivier of our day. He’s spent the last six years as persona non grata. He’s been declared not guilty by two juries in two countries. I think his case, like that of Armie Hammer, will be remembered as another ugly instance of #MeToo opportunism. To borrow a line from Raymond J. Donovan, Ronald Reagan’s unjustly indicted labor secretary, to which office does he go to get his reputation back?
Sorry, I had to rant. I hope some major Hollywood director has the guts and grace to give him a starring role.
Gail: Rant away! And as I said, I’m following your lead on this one. Except for your #MeToo swipe. The whole #MeToo opportunism reference hurts me.
Sorry, Gail, much as it physically pains me to agree with the Republican, but the truth doesn’t care about your hurt feelings 🤷‍♀️

"Pleads Guilty To Robbery," Winnipeg Tribune. August 4, 1943. Page 11. ---- Joseph Raymond Olivie Perrault, of Fasset, Que., pleaded guilty in city police court today to a charge of armed robbery Monday night. He was remanded until Friday.
Perrault was charged with robbing Pat Murphy, 381 Balmoral st., of $35 in the Colony pharmacy, 374 Colony st., at 7.30 p.m. Monday/
Asked how old he was, Perrault said he was 19 by R.C.A.F. records but his real age was 17. Difficulty in verifying his age made immediate disposition of the case impossible.
Police said Perrault had escaped custody Saturday from R.C.A.F. police at No. 2 manning depot, Brandon, where he was awaiting sentence by court martial on three theft charges. Police said he had stolen a .45 calibre revolver with a clip of 14 cartridges, and that he had used it in Monday's holdup.
R.C.A.F. police and city detectives made the arrest at 8.30 p.m. Tuesday in the United Services centre.

Taxonomic vandalism 2023 - Microelapidae named a second time!
Fake science ...

Micrelapidae Das et al. 2023, is NOT a new discovery. It is in fact an illegally coined objective junior synonym of Micrelapidae Hoser, 2013 and hence the name must be exclusively attributed to the original scientist who discovered and named the family, Raymond Hoser, 2013 and not the later copycats. Hamlet (1948) is faithful to Shakespeare's form, and, in its academic way has some very powerful atmospherics. It's a fascinating version of Shakespeare. But Jean Renoir's comment pinpoints its limitations. 'You feel dizzy when you look down from a great height. So what? What has that to do with Shakespeare?' We might have felt less dizzy if the film hadn't tried so hard to turn Hamlet into a Douglas Fairbanks hero who temporarily just can't make up his mind. But since Hamlet isn't a modern liberal, he considers none of the liberal problems, and the film shunts itself into a cultural limbo again.
