5 Reasons To Spend Time On The Costa Del Sol During The Colder Months – Simply Shuttles
Tumblr media
The southern Spanish region known as the Costa del Sol doesn’t always tend to get talked about much as a place to spend the winter – especially the first few months of a calendar year, after Christmas. But should it be?
Below, we’ve set out just some of the reasons you should give serious consideration to whiling away a few days – or even weeks – on the Costa del Sol during January, February, and into the spring.
There isn’t really such thing as ‘winter’ here…
…well, certainly not as many people across the rest of Europe would understand it. With even January – the coldest month of the year in the region – seeing average daily temperatures of around 17 degrees C, and about five to seven hours of sunshine each day, the Costa del Sol is a wonderfully hospitable spot for a winter break, almost irrespective of what you plan to do here.
It’s an excellent place to golf in the winter
We receive plenty of enquiries about Fuengirola, Estepona, and Marbella golf transfers for the winter here at Simply Shuttles, from people who know all about the Costa del Sol’s gorgeous scenery and excellent facilities for those wishing to tee off in January, February, or March.
With more than 70 golf courses to be found between Torre del Mar and Sotogrande, the region certainly doesn’t leave golfers bored during the (only slightly) chillier months.
It’s a great time to explore the region’s cultural and heritage sites
Even if you do want to spend a bit more time indoors during your trip to the Costa del Sol in the winter, you won’t find a shortage of interesting things to do here.
Many people from abroad come into the region via Málaga Airport, for example, and the city itself serves up stimulating museums, galleries, and other landmarks ranging from the Museo de Málaga and Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga to the Alcazaba of Málaga and Teatro Romano de Málaga (Roman Theatre). Meanwhile, Marbella presents the likes of the Museo del Grabado Español Contemporáneo (Contemporary Engraving Museum) and Museo Ralli Marbella.
You can even go skiing at this time of year!
It’s not exactly one of the first things that most of us would associate with the Costa del Sol, but a trip to this part of Spain could even take in the Sierra Nevada ski resort, which is the southernmost ski resort on the whole of the continent.
Situated in the Sierra Nevada mountain range in the province of Granada, the resort offers runs for every level of ability, including 19 green runs for relatively cautious skiers, but also 45 blue runs, 53 red, and seven black. And of course, there is the chance to enjoy awesome views across the mountains as you make your way down from the ski slopes.
This could be the time for low-key, stress-free inspiration
Not everyone who visits the Costa del Sol necessarily even comes in order to experience “that” city, resort, bar, golf course, or even art gallery that they’ve heard so much about. Much of the pleasure of being in the region during the first few months of the year can simply be about… taking everything in, at your leisure, in your own time.
The crowds certainly recede in many of the Costa del Sol’s most ‘touristic’ spots come wintertime, and hotels tend to be a lot cheaper as well. These factors can help make the colder months an excellent time to experience the region in a different, slower way, while feeling slightly closer to the more ‘traditional’ Andalucia.
Have we got you a bit excited about what your next trip to southern Spain could be like? If so, don’t forget that when it comes to everything from Benahavis restaurant tours to Marbella golf transfers, our private hire services at Simply Shuttles can help make it all so much easier. Give us a call now, on +34 951 279 117, to book any of our in-demand services for the months ahead.

May 1st marks International Workers’ Day. The origins of May Day lie in the Haymarket Affair of 1886. On May 4th, trade unionists gathered in Chicago to demand the 8 hour day, a city in which the average working week was 60 hours long. The rally was attacked by police, and several organisers were framed and hanged for the use of explosives against the police. May Day has since been marked internationally as a day where the labour movement celebrates past and future struggles against exploitation and for dignity at work.
To mark this year’s International Workers Day, this article will explore the work of the Sindicato Obrero de Campo – Sindicato Andaluz de Trabajadores (SOC-SAT), a union of agricultural workers based in Andalucía, Spain. The Landworkers’ Alliance is working in solidarity with SOC-SAT through its international affiliation to La Via Campesina. The structure of the modern agricultural supply chain is global, with most of the region’s produce primarily exported for sale in supermarkets in France, Germany, and the UK. This means that to be successful, workers’ unions must also operate internationally, supporting each other at different points of the supply chain. To this end, the LWA has been increasing its cooperation with SOC-SAT, meeting regularly to discuss ways and methods of supporting the struggle of the workers who supply the British supermarket system.
Almeria is a 30 square mile province of Andalucia. It is known as the “sea of plastic” for the number of polytunnels that cover the landscape. The region produces 20% of Europe’s fresh produce for export to supermarkets in Northern Europe. Conditions in Almeria represent much of what is wrong with modern agriculture, based on severe exploitation of both land and people. Around 100,000 workers are employed there, mostly undocumented migrants from Morocco. These workers are employed under extremely precarious conditions. Many are employed on temporary day labourer contracts which offer no security of hours and are regularly not paid the legal minimum wage. Many workers live in shanties on the outskirts of farms, which receive no services from local government. In one shanty, drinking water supplies are maintained directly by SAT. Some of these workers have tried to tackle their exploitation at the hands of landowners and multinationals by organising themselves in SOC-SAT.
While the system of private ownership and production for corporate profit remain, companies have both the power and incentive to attack workers’ conditions. According to SOC-SAT, for a permanent end to this struggle, the current system of private ownership must be replaced by a system based on cooperative ownership of the land and means of production, based on the idea that the land should belong to those that work it.
I wrote a short piece for May Day on the work of SOC-SAT. a Spanish trade union I’ve been working with through the LWA.

Laia Sanz has so far attracted attention as a motorcyclist in the Dakar Rally. Now the Spaniard is switching from two to four wheels. In the Primax X-raid Team, she will celebrate her debut in the car category in a MINI ALL4 Racing at the Dakar 2022. The Spaniard had already competed in the Rally Andalucia in the MINI ALL4 Racing this season. She secured eighth place in front of her home crowd. She also competed in the Extreme E, an off-road racing series for vehicles with electric motors. Sanz can look back on very successful years in motorbike racing: in 2011, she competed in the Dakar Rally for the first time. The fast Spaniard reached the finish line in all editions and secured a sensational ninth place in 2015. In addition, she was 14 times Trial World Champion, 10 European Trial Champion and won the Enduro World Championships seven times; she also took six victories in the FIM Trial des Nations. Primax is a leading company in the energy market with branches in Peru, Colombia and Ecuador. Primax and X-raid already worked together successfully a few years ago. In 2019, Stéphane Peterhansel secured the title in the FIA World Cup for cross-country rallies and in 2020, Carlos Sainz won the Dakar with a vehicle supported by Primax.
