The Keratin Kilometer
Do you know how fast nails grow? It’s on average 0.1mm per day.
That may seem like an utterly insignificant amount, but if you account for the 8,000,000,000 people in the world today, you end up with 800 kilometers of nail growing each day. That’s not even accounting for the fact that most people have 20 nails (toes, fingers)! In reality, it is around 16,000 km of nails every single day!
16,000 km is a lot. That’s more than the circumference of the earth!
Think about it this way: You walk for days, weeks, months, possibly even years, just following a little finger-wide off-white line. And that’s just the growth of one day!
Have you ever traveled 16,000 km? I know I haven’t. Can you truly fathom the distance? I mean, really think of the ridiculous scale of it?
Imagine the length of a week of worldwide nail growth. It would probably be enough to reach another planet.
Why the hell am I telling you any of this? It really doesn’t matter, just a weird thing I thought of…
I guess the weirdness itself is interesting; even refreshing, in a way. To find oddities in the everyday, wonder in the mundane, is something to delight at.
Thanks for reading my weird post about nails!
