Hey everyone,
I'd like to introduce my new blog, where I will be sharing content on the hedgheog rehabilitation that I do.
Who am I?
I am a student, graduated with a B.Sc. in Biology and a M.Sc. in Marine biology in Germany.
Hedgehogs have been part of my life, my whole life. When I was little they were already diligently fed in the garden by my mother and we helped them through hibernation if they were too small to survive hibernation on their own.
When the pandemic hit in 2020 and university was pretty much put on hold, I, like many others, began to engage even more intensively with my environment (even more than a biology student already does). And so one evening I realised that one of my one-year-old hedgehogs that I had helped hibernate the year before (Biscuit) had a strange crust on his shoulder.
And so began the endless research into what Biscuit might have. I visited vets, who were unfortunately useless as they were not hedgehog experts, contacted animal shelters, hedgehog centres and associations until I finally got help from the latter and the diagnosis was clear: skin fungus.
With the help of hedgehog experts, I began to bathe and treat Biscuit and once the skin fungus had been combated, he could be released back into the wild, healthy and lively.
I started to take a closer look at my hedgehog guests in the garden and slowly slipped into hedgehog care (and with me, involuntarily, my parents as I live at home).
Over the years, with the help of hedgehog experts with decades of experience (from hedgehog networks, forums and scientists), I learned more and more, and word quickly got around to neighbours (both human and hedgehog) that I care for hedgehogs and so more and more hedgehogs ended up at my place until the guest loo became a mini hedgehog station (much to my parents' chagrin).
Medication (whether antibiotics, fungicides or infusions), visits to the doctor (x-rays, dental care), release enclosures including cat and rat-proof feeding and sleeping houses, or simply food have to be bought and that adds up quite a bit.
Over the last year (feeding starts around March to around December, when young hedgehogs born too late are still on the move) I have fed:
wet cat food (820€ Carney, high quality without sugar or added grains
plus mealworms and meal beetles (own breeding)
and dried soldier fly larvae for €117.56 (4x €29.39) = A total of 937€ for the food alone.
Plus visits to the doctor totalling €362.12
Food supplements (e.g. biotin or probiotics, lactase) €82.94
Medication 472,35€
Summing up to total costs for last year of = € 1,854.97
This does not even take into account the fact that some weakened hedgehogs need special rebuilding food (a/d Hills Diet for €3.20 per 200g tin) or rearing milk (Royal Canin Baby Cat/Dog 2x €23.90). As well as outdoor enclosures (5x Trixie 41,49) incl. sleeping (2x 35) + feeding houses (2x 60€) are needed for rehabilitation and reintroduction. Fortunately, my parents are covering the heating and water costs.
As a full-time student, this has been quite a hit to my savings, but I am happy to take it on myself for a good balance of rescued hedgehogs.
However, I need financial support so that I can continue to take in and rescue hedgehogs in the future. I am grateful for every small donation so that I can improve my deficit from last year and realise purchases that are necessary this year (such as new outdoor enclosures and sleeping houses).
Me and the hedgehogs thank you for everything you can make possible

Animal Feed Additive Market- Nourishing Industry Landscape
Animal feed additives are used to meet the nutritional needs of animals through the feed itself. This combination of ingredients is added to the animal feed mix to fulfill specific growth demands. These additives are usually added in micro quantity. It is used to increase efficiency, control diseases, and rate of gain.
Animal feed additives are vital in modern agriculture to enhance the nutritional capacity of livestock. From vitamins and minerals, probiotics, and additives continue to contribute to growth and overall performance. Animal feed additives are increasingly being demanded for optimizing feed quality and promoting animal welfare.
Antioxidants and amino acids supplements are growth promoters as the livestock industry is challenged by growing demand for the population. Ensuring the supply of quality food and animal well-being from a sustainability perspective are upfront challenges ahead of companies.
Innovation and research are keys to improving food production sustainability and their impact on animal farming. It reduced the carbon footprint of agriculture. Farmers have become increasingly aware of their feed impact and the overall performance of their livestock. Stringent quality standards of livestock feed are pushing farmers towards high-quality feed additives in animal nutrition programs.
Several countries have placed restrictions on the use of antibiotics in animal feed as it created conditions of antimicrobial resistance. The paradigm shift in the industry towards sustainable alternatives is anticipated to increase the share of animal feed additives in the coming years.

Lately, I’ve gotten the question a lot: are you involved with an animal shelter? Is that your job? I guess I talk about the cats a lot. I’ve been going to Berny’s house every day since Macaroni the Foster Cat arrived because I was helping him give Cotton Candy — that’s Macaroni’s brother — his probiotics, and he was helping me give Macaroni her whole medicine medley — at one point she had to take six different things the poor girl. I don’t understand how she’s still happy to see me. — Berny is the cat guy right now — el señor de los gatos — there seem to be a lot of strays around his neighborhood and they started hanging around his house ever since he started leaving food out for Tuna.
That’s how it all started, I guess. I got a call from Berny asking if I could come over and help him get some kittens out from behind his water tank. The tank was pressed up against a corner of the wall and a couple of kittens — one black and one white — had crawled into the small space between the round surface of the tank and the sharp angle of the corner, and they had been meowing up a storm since they couldn’t climb back up the mostly smooth surfaces. I was in the middle of DMing a D&D session, but after he explained the situation, I apologized to my players and ended the session early. I headed over to Berny’s.
When I got there, using the clothesline tubes, I swung myself up onto the tank — it’s a big tank; it’s taller than I am — and since I am a petite person, carefully slid into the corner with the cats, hoping that they wouldn’t freak out and claw and shred my ankles. They didn’t. They compressed themselves into the tiniest shapes to make room for my feet, and I began the rather difficult task of reaching down for them. I am a petite person, but the space was rather cramped, and I didn’t have enough room to bend down. I folded myself down as best as I could, reaching as low as my arm would go, I maneuvered a cat onto my foot, and I did my best to lift the — thankfully — limp and docile cat up to my hand. We got the black sibling out first, and it scurried away. We got the white sibling out second and Berny caught her and fed her. They hung around his house since he kept leaving tuna and food out for them. The black sibling stopped coming around, but the white sibling became Tuna.
Word of the food surely got around. After Tuna, came others. And after Tuna had kittens, Berny determined to start catching all the regulars to get them fixed. He kept one of Tuna’s kittens and named him Nova. Nova is the tamest and chunkiest of the lot. He likes me because I bring treats and play with him. He makes these big, spectacular jumps after the toy and lands with a sharp exhale that sounds like someone sitting too confidently on a cushioned chair.
Kenny came next. He was a sweet, violet point cat, and I think Berny’s favorite. He stopped coming around about a month ago, which is the raw deal with outdoor cats, especially because he was Nova’s favorite playmate. Nia and Morgana came together and came pregnant. Macaroni and Cotton Candy are Nia’s kittens. I helped re-home them, and thus I was going to help get them fixed, which was when we found out they were not feeding Macaroni well at all. I know it was due to ignorance and no malicious intent, but Macaroni deserves a loving home and all the care in the world.
Besides the regular lot, there is a colony of five feral cats that live in the abandoned house across the street from Berny — there are two adult orange cats, one long-haired black point adolescent, and two fluffy orange kittens. — He started luring them out with food, and last week we managed to trap one of the adults in a crate. We got her spayed, and we’re hoping to catch the rest before they demolish the house completely, as the landowners are rebuilding the whole place in a couple of months. The cat we caught was feral, so we’ll release her. We hope that if we can catch the kittens, though, they might grow tame enough to re-home. One of the orange kittens, Best Boy, likes to play with me when I bring the toy around.
So really, it’s not a job, proper, but it’s meaningful work. I enjoy it.

Hi! My name is Kimie. I am a 30-something-year-old woman from Montreal, Québec and this is the story of Mya and me.
Tumblr media
To give you a little more context on me, I never had a dog growing up but for as long as I can remember, I always wanted one.
I am a proud first generation Canadian. My parents immigrated here in the 70s – my mom from El Salvador and my dad from Colombia.
Whenever I asked for a dog, my parents always said, “No, dogs are not meant to be kept in houses”. This is how it was for them back home – dogs would just roam around their neighbourhoods or be left in people’s front yard as guard dogs back then.
Fast forward to my early twenties…
I was working my first full-time job. The mall that I worked at had a pet store and I would walk in regularly to see all the animals they had – my main attraction were always the dogs. I walked in one day and walked out with my first dog, a Shih Tzu named Chewy.
I am not going to lie; I was scared to bring him home that day. I knew my parents’ stance on dogs, but he was the cutest fluff I had ever seen and figured they would love him anyways and that’s exactly what happened.
Chewy lived to be 14 years old – he passed away in March of this year (RIP little one). He was the best first dog anyone can ask for. When I moved out, my mom and I shared custody of Chewy. She would have him on days that she didn’t work, and I would have him on the days that she worked.
Tumblr media
When the 1st wave of Covid-19 broke out here in March 2020, everything went on lock down. My mom was laid off from her job of over 30 years with just a couple of years left before retiring. At this time, Chewy became her full-time companion (up until very recently).
Chewy suffered all his life with stomach sensitivities and food intolerances. We were always very careful with what food we were giving him; he rarely ate any table food and we always listened to vet recommendations. Still, this was not enough.
We noticed a significant weight loss from December to February this year. He went from his standard 13 lbs to just 9lbs in 2 months! He had been 13-14 lbs for as long as we can remember. Things started deteriorating very rapidly in February: his bowels started becoming very irregular, he was not holding in any of the food we were giving him. After several visits to the vets, the vets put him on antibiotics and ordered some blood work – the blood work was inconclusive therefore, we had to get an ultrasound done. The results from the ultrasound were not favourable – he had cancer in his intestines.
Time was ticking after that news – Chewy was on borrowed time and we had to get our ducks in a row. We needed to give him the best quality of life possible with the time he had left but it was too little, too late.
- we gave up the vet diet (as that was not doing him any good anymore).
- we started incorporating pre and probiotics with his food.
- we got together and researched what food we could cook for him that wouldn’t deteriorate his state further.
We cooked him a batch of turkey with quinoa, carrots, sweet potatoes and spinach. He loved this food, we could tell!
Maybe we should have been feeding him that type of diet since we found out about his food sensitivities? Maybe we should have done more research? Maybe we should have incorporated more vitamins and supplements to his diet from the onset? We had so many questions after we found out he was sick and we were devasted knowing that one day soon, he would no longer be with us but Chewy was still his happy, go-lucky self until his last day. His energy, his sweetness, his affection never faltered. This blog is dedicated to Chewy – the best first dog.
Let’s get back on track…
Although this blog is dedicated to Chewy, this blog is about Mya and me. This is our story, and it is only the beginning.

Boosting Poultry Health and Performance: The Benefits of Probiotics in Poultry Feed
In the ever-evolving field of poultry farming, maintaining optimal health and productivity of birds is paramount. As producers seek sustainable and natural ways to enhance poultry health, probiotics have emerged as a powerful tool. Incorporating probiotics in poultry feed offers numerous benefits, from improving gut health to boosting overall performance. Let’s explore the transformative impact of probiotics in poultry nutrition and how they contribute to healthier, more productive flocks.
Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer health benefits to the host. In the context of poultry, probiotics are added to feed to promote a balanced gut microbiota, enhance nutrient absorption, and support the immune system. The use of probiotics in poultry feed is gaining traction as producers recognize their role in fostering robust and resilient birds.
Key Benefits of Probiotics in Poultry Feed:
Improved Gut Health: The primary advantage of incorporating probiotics in poultry feed is their ability to enhance gut health. Probiotics promote a healthy balance of gut microbiota, which is crucial for efficient digestion and nutrient absorption. A healthy gut microbiome also prevents the colonization of harmful pathogens, reducing the incidence of gastrointestinal diseases.
Enhanced Immune Function: Probiotics support the immune system by stimulating the production of antibodies and enhancing the activity of immune cells. This results in improved disease resistance and overall health, allowing birds to thrive even in challenging conditions.
Better Nutrient Absorption: By maintaining a healthy gut environment, probiotics improve the efficiency of nutrient absorption from the feed. This means that birds can extract more essential vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients, leading to better growth and performance.
Reduced Need for Antibiotics: With the rise of antibiotic resistance, there is a growing emphasis on reducing antibiotic use in animal agriculture. Probiotics offer a natural alternative to antibiotics by enhancing gut health and preventing infections, thereby reducing the reliance on antibiotics for disease control.
Stress Reduction: Probiotics can help mitigate the negative effects of stress in poultry, whether from environmental changes, handling, or other stressors. A healthy gut microbiome is linked to better stress resilience, which translates into more stable and productive flocks.
Improved Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR): Probiotics contribute to a better feed conversion ratio, meaning birds require less feed to achieve the same growth. This not only boosts productivity but also reduces feed costs for producers.
Environmental Benefits: Healthier birds with improved feed efficiency produce less waste, which benefits the environment. Reduced excretion of nitrogen and phosphorus from better nutrient absorption helps minimize the environmental footprint of poultry farming.
Practical Application of Probiotics in Poultry Feed:
Incorporating probiotics into poultry feed is straightforward and can be tailored to the specific needs of the flock. Probiotics can be included in feed formulations or administered through water supplements. For optimal results, it’s important to choose the right strains and dosages of probiotics, guided by scientific research and expert recommendations.
In conclusion, probiotics in poultry feed offer a multitude of benefits that enhance the health, productivity, and sustainability of poultry farming. By promoting a healthy gut microbiome, supporting immune function, and improving nutrient absorption, probiotics help create more resilient and efficient poultry flocks. As the industry continues to move towards natural and sustainable solutions, the use of probiotics in poultry feed stands out as a key strategy for achieving these goals. If you’re a poultry producer looking to optimize flock health and performance, consider integrating probiotics into your feeding regimen for a healthier, more productive future.
