Manuel Godoy (1767-1851). “Prince of the Peace.” He was the favorite of both King Charles IV of Spain and his wife, Queen Maria Luisa (one of his many mistresses) and rose to incredible power. He was running the government of Spain and got tangled up with Napoleon, who was way out of his league. After the disaster of Trafalgar, Godoy was ambushed by disgruntled Spaniards, imprisoned, released when Charles IV abdicated in favor of his son, and shipped out of Spain along with that whole Bourbon group so Napoleon could put his brother on the throne. Godoy spent the rest of his life scrambling around Europe. His life was incredibly complicated. He is mostly known for inviting French troops into Spain and starting that whole mess.

There are a few places in mdzs where, in the midst of Wei Wuxian trying to placate him, Jiang Cheng says something so terribly, egregiously misrepresentative of Wei Wuxian and his morals that all Wei Wuxian can do is stare at him—like an adult realizing for the first time that the tantruming child they are attempting to calm may just be spoiled—before deciding to give up on the conversation. “Sure, Jiang Cheng,” he says, “it’s whatever you feel. It’s whatever you want.”

People like to say that the problem with the Yunmeng friendship is simply communication issues, but I think the real problem is that when true conflict happens between them, they both realize that they truly do not like each other. The difference is that Jiang Cheng reacts to this realization by trying to force Wei Wuxian into the shape that he wants, which is submission—“Do as I say! Listen to me! Obey me!”—while Wei Wuxian stands at the other end of the torched bridge he plans to never cross again and goes, “Sure Jiang Cheng, it’s whatever you feel, it’s whatever you want.”

“The Prince of Peace Signing the Portugal Treaty”

Godoy, as a savage and swashbuckling Spanish officer, forces two kneeling and terrified Portuguese to sign a peace treaty. His foot is on the document: 'Treaty of P[eace] between . . .'; with an arrogant and minatory* gesture he puts the point of his large sabre on his signature: 'Prince of Peace'. Close behind Godoy are ranks of Spanish soldiers, who level their muskets at the two Portuguese. Behind the latter on rising ground is the wall of a fortified town which is in flames; through a gateway women and children call for help...Godoy says: "Come Sir speedily, or I shall put the whole country to the sword, men, women & children—I will not be trifled with!! Remember I am the Prince of Peace". The Portuguese plenipotentiary says, pen in hand: "For Heavens sake stop this effusion of blood, let the destruction of three cities suffice you. The cries of [sic] oblige me to to, yes I do know you are the Prince of Peace." 22 July 1801 — British Museum
