AMC Picks Up Captain Nemo Origin Series ‘Nautilus’ From Disney, Plans to Air Show in 2024
Tumblr media
The Captain Nemo origin story series “Nautilus” lives on, with AMC Networks licensing the U.S. and Canadian linear and streaming rights to the live-action series from Disney Entertainment.
The 10-episode show was originally slated to air on Disney+, but it was announced back in August that the show was not going forward at the streamer as part of a wide-ranging cost cutting initiative at the Mouse House.
AMC and AMC+ will now air the show as a special television event in 2024, with an exact premiere date to be announced later. Inspired by Jules Vernes’ “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea,” the show will explore the early life of Captain Nemo, who is played by Shazad Latif. The character is described as “an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family, a prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces that have taken everything from him.”
“’Nautilus’ is a big, sweeping drama that is sure to appeal to fans of our Anne Rice Immortal Universe and other buzzy and fan-forward series like ‘Orphan Black: Echoes,’” said Ben Davis, executive vice president of original programming for AMC Networks and AMC Studios. “We are looking forward to bringing it to AMC+ and AMC as a special television event next year.”
Along with Latif, the cast of the show includes Georgia Flood, Thierry Fremont and Céline Menville, with guest appearances from Richard E. Grant, Anna Torv and Noah Taylor.
The series was developed and produced by Moonriver TV’s Xavier Marchand and Seven Stories’ Anand Tucker. James Dormer serves as writer and executive producer. Johanna Devereaux, Chris Loveall, Colleen Woodcock, and Daisy Gilbert also executive produce. Cameron Welsh serves as producer. Michael Matthews was the lead director.
“I am hugely excited that the efforts of everyone involved in the making of the show will be seen on such a prestigious network,” said Dormer.
“We are so thrilled to present the epic adventures of Captain Nemo and his legendary submarine The Nautilus alongside the other incredible AMC universes,” said Marchand and Tucker. “The series will take viewers on a breathtaking journey with Nemo and his crew, battling terrifying creatures and the dark forces of the British Empire.”
“Nautilus” is distributed by Disney Entertainment and acknowledges the support from the Australian Government’s Location Incentive and from the Queensland Government via Screen Queensland’s Production Attraction Strategy.

“Without my status as a chess piece in someone's scheme, I would not have evolved into the person that I am at present.”
Upon your arrival at the palace, he took on the role of a guardian, and prioritizing your safety, well-being and your progress to choose the next king became one of his most important duties. A complex and multi-dimensional personality, you constantly discover new aspects of him, making him more intriguing and sparking your desire to delve deeper. His self-sufficiency, refusal to be associated with any particular faction, and commitment to fulfilling his duties to the best of his abilities mask a dark and painful past that haunts him like a ghost. The shadow of his birth, the darkness that has always controlled him, rears its head, representing him as a mere pawn, and only...one decision from you will set him free.
Tumblr media
❥ 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 :
One could say that Vernard's existence was the result of a mistake made by not only his mother, but also Rhodolite's previous king. His mother, driven by the need to survive, worked as a prostitute, while the former king (The Fallen Beast) sought solace and validation in the arms of various women. It was their intersection that ultimately brought Vernard into this world.
Attempts were made to make Vernard's mother abandon her unborn child, but her inexplicable connection to the fetus led her to resist this decision. Rather than kill her unborn child and live with the guilt, she decided to take her own life by slitting her veins with a broken glass shard.
Desperate to save both her life and her unborn child by orders of a certain someone, the physicians worked to deliver the baby prematurely. However, the toll on her already fragile body was too great, and she sadly passed away shortly after giving birth, due to complications from the premature delivery and the attempt at suicide.
❥ 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱 :
Due to a forbidden interaction, Vernard faced harsh criticism, disapproval, and shame from the royal court. However, his status as a pawn helped shield him from complete rejection, allowing him to be recognized as a prince, if only in the minds of some. He's the only prince who wasn't granted a rank, as the court deemed him unworthy due to his mother's disgraceful past. Even from the outset, giving Vernard the title of prince was a difficult pill for the court to swallow.
Whenever Vernard makes a small error or oversight, he's judged and his actions are linked to his mother's past as a prostitute, causing him to isolate himself and fear making mistakes again, and closeness to one of the princes used to keep him in check, preventing criticism or judgment, but something happened, widening the distance between them.
Because of his mother's shameful past, it was believed that Vernard lacked a proper lineage and was unworthy of one, so his "fake" caretaker intervened and the "Mürrisch" name was given to him, from that day on, the prince stuck to this name even after he reached puberty.
❥ 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 :
The princes were confused by Vernard's varied and strange behaviors. They used the word "eccentric" to describe his mysterious personality, which can be open and active or closed and dull, depending on the situation. He can be obedient at times and rebellious at others, but all of this is connected to the circumstances he's in.
Vernard adamantly refused to affiliate with a faction, but he handled faction business smoothly as if he was a recognized member, because he believed that joining a faction would limit his duties and restrictions would go against his belief that he could maintain multiple ventures.

Sci-Fi Saturday: Méliès and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
Tumblr media
Week 1:
Film(s): A Trip to the Moon (Le voyage dans la lune, Dir. Georges Méliès, 1902, France)
The Impossible Voyage (Le Voyage à travers l'impossible, Dir. Georges Méliès, 1904, France)
The Inventor Crazybrains and His Wonderful Airship (Le dirigeable fantastique, Dir. Georges Méliès, 1906, France)
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (Dir. Stuart Patton, 1916, USA)
Viewing Format: Méliès films via Criterion Channel; 20,00 Leagues via Kino Lorber Blu-Ray.
Date Watched: May 15, 2021
Rationale for Inclusion:
Internationally iconic, and widely associated with both silent cinema and science fiction, for its shot of a rocket piercing the eye of the moon, it went without saying that this chronological watch through of science fiction cinema would begin with A Trip to the Moon (Le voyage dans la lune, Dir. Georges Méliès, 1902, France).
But why watch just ONE Méliès film, especially when they range from a few minutes to 20 minutes in length? The Criterion Channel had Lobster Films' transfers of stencil colored prints available for viewing, so I also selected two other films that could be classified as science fiction, or at least "scientific romances": The Impossible Voyage (Le Voyage à travers l'impossible, Dir. Georges Méliès, 1904, France) and The Inventor Crazybrains and His Wonderful Airship (Le dirigeable fantastique, Dir. Georges Méliès, 1906, France).
In the case of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (Dir. Stuart Patton, 1916, USA), I either did not know the film existed, or had forgotten it existed, until I ran across a listing for it during a home video sale on Kino Lorber's website. I impulse bought a copy, curious to see what an adaptation of Jules Verne's submarine story made the year after D.W. Griffith's masterpiece of racism and cinematic technique The Birth of a Nation (1915, USA) would look like. I later learned that this version of 20,000 Leagues was the first motion picture to include underwater sequences, and was part of why the Universal Film Manufacturing Company transitioned into becoming the Universal Pictures Corporation. My reaction to the latter was, "What is it with Universal Studios being saved by movies about sea creatures?" (See also: "Jaws" (Dir. Steven Spielberg, 1975, USA).)
Reactions:
The Méliès Films
Foundational genre staples are all represented in these films:
Aliens
Space travel
Aquatic exploration
Mad scientists
The Impossible Voyage is a pseudo sequel to A Trip to the Moon, both in terms of content and Méliès building on the special effects and filmmaking techniques used in the latter. However, The Inventor Crazybrains and His Wonderful Airship probably should not have been included in our viewing as its content consists of a celestial hallucination, not an actual sci-fi narrative. It also was a let down compared to the other films.
The transfers of the films with their applied color processes were gorgeous. It adds to the mood, wonder, and iconic quality of Méliès' work.
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
The overarching feeling after watching this film was that my partner and I really need to actually read Jules Verne's novels. Had we more familiarity with his works, we would have been able to identify 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea as an adaptation of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea as well as its sequel The Mysterious Island. Heck, we would have known that Twenty Thousand Leagues had a sequel! And in knowing about The Mysterious Island, which includes Captain Nemo's tragic backstory as being a dethroned Indian prince, it would have been less surprising to see Nemo depicted as East Asian.
Given how culturally acceptable racism was in 1916, I was shocked to see a mainstream American film where the tragic hero inventor was Asian and not a one dimensional stereotype or played by Sessue Hayakawa. Granted anything progressive about the character is undermined by the fact that actor Allen Holubar is a white man in brown face.
An entire essay or thesis could be (and probably has been) devoted to the history of how Captain Nemo's ethnicity has been depicted in various adaptations over the years. I would love to research or read that, honestly.
Anyway, narratively and stylistically 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea felt more modern than my partner and I expected for a film from 1916, and we were left wondering how much of it was from the source novels.
The underwater scenes were impressive and inventive given that the footage had to be captured via a complex set-up involving an observation pod. The footage was a spectacle in and of itself.
Overall a good film, and it paired well with the Méliès' films.

Grant guest stars in the series, playing the charismatic leader of the port town of Karajaan, who Captain Nemo and the crew encounter on their adventures.
“Nautilus” tells Jules Verne’s epic story from Captain Nemo’s point of view: an Indian Prince robbed of his birth right and family, a prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces that have taken everything from him. The Staff (at present) of Archimago Academy (Part 1)
a note on Archimago Academy before proceeding. Archimago Academy is the first place of teaching new Eldritchicians for the Fellowship founded some time in the later end of the fourth century ad/ce. the Campus or the Academy is the repurposed Tower City Palace of the old Erlking Albrecht (now Alwin) V Eldritch. Located in the exact center of the Ever changing landscape of Faerie and Elfpham. sepersted from the rest of Faerie and Elfphame by the Eldritch Woods. Is expected to still offer housing to the abdica Erlking when he and his Wild Hunt show up after having visited and stayed with the Five Queens/Empresses of Faerie and Elfphame.
Headmistress: Rhonwen Goodfellow deHautdesert aka the Green Lady, aka Lady Bertilak. A native to the Eldritch Woods. One of the Old Fae. Wife to Sir Bertalik de Hautdesert the Green Knight, and sister to the Old Erlking's Corruptor of Words Rosemary Goodfellow. The fourth to hold the position of Headmistress, following Huld, who followed Morgan Le Fay, who followed the Founder and Arch Overseer of the FoE Alyss Violet Eldridge.
Combat Professors: 1) Quincey Johnathan Harker. Human, has stayed alive thanks to being granted a Flask with Indunian Cider from Algimantas Varius Eldritch. Has proficiency with Ghosts and Undead(Vampires especially), Fairies/Elves, and I forget his third Proficiency. Crap. Anyway! Quincy like his name sake is good with a Bowie Knife. The other Combat Professor is Huld. Huld is an elf (likely of Gloriana or Diana's Court), sister to Overseer Runa Ring Maker, sister in-law to Alyss, and one of the first Eldritchicians. Specializes in Spear Combat. Proficient with...I forget exactly. In a trio with Quincey and Horatio.
Professor of Rhetoric: Professor Florimond C. Feather. A Large man that calls to mind an Ape. Is human. Has a Red Beard in a style like Jules Verne or George MacDonald yet the hair on his head is an odd white marking him as an ESPer. Has some Psychic powers, a chilling Pale blue eye that puts one in mind of the Tell Tale Heart. Has himself a Gold Bug Brooch that is in fact a Cipher Beetle used by some members of the FoE's Preternatural Intelligentsia. Helps tend to Runa's Unkindness, is proficien with Ghosts, Cryptid, Angels, and Fairies. Professor Feather is an Alumnus of Dreadrock University. Also acts as a Guidence counselor and assists with the in house Asylum. Prof. Feather comes off as a frightening person, and make no mistake he has potential to be terrifying, but Feather is perhaps one of the most sociable and good humored of the entire staff. Not above playing pranks on his colleug or looking the other way when students play pranks on him. Will not stand for personal insults to anyone though. Has a heavy accent of some sort. Seems like a bizarre mix of French German, and Greek Accents. his accent will not be written out though.
Professor of Logic: Algirdas Simmons. Human, with White hair that indicates he's an ESPer. One of the six Head Intelligencers of the Preternatural Intelligentsia and is often seen as the Arch Overseer's Secretary. Like Prof. Feather Algirdas has himself a Cipher Beetle Brooch of his own.
Professor of Grammar: Hermes Kleinmann. One of many Kleinmann Homunculi made by Aldread V Eldritch who have graduated from Dreadrock University and went on to join the Fellowship of Eldritchicians.
Professor of Ghosts and other Undead: Position shared between Quincey, Prof. Feather, and Horatio.
Professor of Demons: Horatio 'Dr. Faustus' Lykke. A Danish scholar who is currently soulless (soul in the custody of Alan V. Eldritch). Called Doctor Faustus on account of having given up his Soul, and having studied at Wittenberg. Proficient with Demons, Ghosts, Cryptids, and Shadows. Always dressed in Black. To hear him tell it, he is in mourning for a Sweet Prince.
Professor of Angels: Professor Feather, though he shares this position with one Charles Walter Stansby Williams. Yes, that Charles Williams. Basically like real Charles Williams But. I seem to have hit a character limit boo

Relater

William Tarn Pritchard, An Analytical Digest of All the Reported Cases, 1847
Page 147: 3. Captures by noncommissioned persons or vessels. ….. 24. By the Admiralty law the property of a ship taken without letters of marque vests in the King upon the taking, and this upon the high sea. The King v. Brown, 12 Mod. 135., Carth. 399. 25. Where a privateer takes a prize without letters of marque, the prize belongs to the King as a droit of the Crown. Nichols v. Goodall, 10 Ves. 155.
…….
4. Captures by privateers between the application for, and grant of, letters of marque. …
Page 148: 34. A vessel which had been fitted out as a private ship-of-war applied for letters of marque, which the Commissioners of the Admiralty, on the 29th of December, granted a warrant to the Judge of the Admiralty to issue; but, by reason of the pressure of business in the Admiralty Court, the letters of marque did not issue until the 1st of January following. A prize taken by such vessel conjointly with a commissioned ship, on the 30th of December, condemned (save as to the share of the commissioned ship therein) as a droit of Admiralty, the application and warrant for the letters of marque being held insufficient to vest any interest on intermediate captures until the letters of marque were actually issued. The Twee Gesuster, note to The Cape of Good Hope, 2 C. Rob. 285.; Le Franc, Caspe, Ibid.
Page 193: Letters of Marque. 1. A letter of marque is forfeitable for cruelty, as for firing into the prize and killing a man after she has struck. The Prize Act lays down the law to this effect, but this is not more than a formal declaration of what was the ancient law of the Admiralty. The Marianne, Morel, 5 C. Rob. 9. 2. The act of Parliament requires that on granting letters of marque the captain and two sureties shall appear and give security, but on considerations of convenience, where the captain is absent, the practice of the Court permits some other person to appear for him. IN such a case a monition to show cause why the bail should not be forfeited having issued against the party who had appeared for the captain and against the two sureties, objection of such party that the captain was liable, and that, by his appearing for him, he did not bind himself personally, overruled, and the recognizances of the three parties forfeited. The King v. Fergusson, Edwards, 84. 3. Letters of marque and reprisal may be vacated in Chancery. Rex v. Carew, 3 Swan. 669., 1 Vern. 54. See Courts; Droits of Admiralty.
Footnote: 1. See the provisions with reference to the granting, revoking, etc., of letters of marque contained in sects. 17, to 23., and also s. 58, of the 55 Geo. 3, c. 160. (the latest Prize Act, which, however, expired with the last war.)
2. With reference to the origin of letters of marque, it appears that if a foreign prince or state seized or spoiled the goods of subjects of England, the King made reprisals upon the goods of the other’s subjects within the realm, or enabled the party to whom the wrong was done, by letters of marque the goods of other subjects of the same state mereare, ….. But a subject of the King cannot take the goods of the subjects of a Prince in amity with the King by force of letters of marque of another sovereign or state. 2 Ver. 592., 4 Com. Dig. 428.
3. As to the granting of letters of marque, see Introduction to Godolphin’s Adm. Jur.; and see also 27 E. 3, st. 2 c. 17, 4 H. 5 c. 7, 41 Gen. 3 d. 76.
4. Security is always taken on the grant of letters of marque, for the due observance of the conditions thereof, and that security is forfeitable on the transgression of those conditions. Ibid.
Page 535: Art. 1. Against what and where Letters of Marque may act hostilely.— It shall be lawful for the commanders of ships, authorized by letters of marque and reprisals for private men-of-war, to set upon by force of arms and subdue and take the men-of-war, ships and vessels, goods, wares, and merchandises belonging to the French Republic, or to any persons being subjects to the French Republic, or inhabitants within any of the territories of the French Republic, but so that no hostility be committed nor prize attacked, seized, or taken within the harbours of princes or states in amity with us, or within rivers or roads within the shot of their cannon, unless by permission of such princes or states, or their commanders or governors in chief of such places.
Page 536: Art. 4. Not to break Bulk before Judgment. — The ships, vessels, goods, wares, merchandise and effects taken by virtue of letters of marque and reprisals as aforesaid, shall be kept and preserved, and no part of them shall be sold, spoiled, wasted, or diminished, and the bulk thereof shall not be broken before judgment be given in the High Court of Admiralty of England or some other court of Admiralty lawfully authorized in that behalf, that the ships, goods, or merchandises are lawful prize.
Art. 5. Privateers to assist Ships in Distress.— If any ship or vessel belonging to us or our subjects shall be found in distress by being in fight, set upon by or taken by the enemy, or by reason of any other accident, the commanders, officers, and company of such merchant ships or vessels as shall have letters of marque and reprisals as aforesaid, shall use their best endeavours to give aid and succour to all such ship or ships, and shall to the utmost of their power labour to free the same from the enemy or any other distress.
Art. 6. Application to the Admiralty for Letters of Marque. — The commanders or owners of such ships and vessels, before taking out letters of marque and reprisals, shall make application in writing, subscribed with their hands, to our High Admiral of Great Britain or our Commissioners for executing that office for the time being, or the Lieutenant or Judge of the said High Court of Admiralty, or his surrogate, and shall therein set forth a particular, true, and exact description of the ship or vessel for which such letters of marque and reprisals is requested, specifying the burthen of such ship or vessel, and the number and nature of the guns and what other warlike furniture and ammunition are on board the same, to what place the ship belongs, and the name or names of the principal owner or owners of such ship or vessel, and the number of men intended to be put oo board the same and for what time they are victualled, also the names of the commanders and officers.
Art. 7. Correspondence with the Admiralty. — The commanders of ships and vessels having letters of marque and reprisals aforesaid, shall hold and keep and are hereby enjoined to hold and keep a correspondence by all conveniences and upon all occasions with our High Admiral of Great Britain, or our Commissioners for executing that office for the time being, or their secretary, so as from time to time to render or give him or them not only an account or intelligence of their captures and proceedings by virtue of such commission, but also of whatever else shall seem unto them or be discovered and declared to them, or found out by them or by examination of or conference with any mariners or passengers of or in the ships or vessels taken, or by any other way or means whatsoever touching or concerning the designs of the enemy or any of their fleets, ships, vessels, or parties, and of the stations, seaports, and places, and of their intents therein, and what ships or vessels of the enemy bound out or home, or where cruising as they shall hear of, and of what else material in these costs may arrive at their knowledge, to the end such costs may be thereon token and such orders given as may be requisite.
Page 537: Art. 10. To deliver their Prisoners to the proper Commissioners.—All captains or commanding officers of ships having letters of marque or reprisals shall send an account of and deliver over what prisoners shall be taken on board any prizes, to the commissioners appointed or to be appointed for the exchange of prisoners of war, or the persons appointed in the seaport towns to take charge of prisoners; and such prisoners shall be subject only to the orders, regulations, and directions of the said commissioners, and no commander or other officer of any ship having a letter of marque or reprisal as aforesaid shall presume upon any pretence whatever to ransom any prisoner.
……
Art. 12. Copies of Journals. — All commanders of ships and vessels having letters of marque and reprisals shall by every opportunity send exact copies of their journals to the Secretary of the Admiralty, and proceed to the condemnation of the prizes as soon as may be, and without delay.
Art 13. To observe all Orders. — Commanders of ships and vessels having letters of marque and reprisals shall, upon due notice being given to them, observe all such other instructions and orders as we shall think fit to direct from time to time for the better carrying on this service.
…..
Art. 15. Bail to be given.—Before any letter of marque or reprisal for the purposes aforesaid shall issue under seal bail shall be given with sureties before the Lieutenant and Judge of our High Court of Admiralty of England or his surrogate, in the sum of 3000l. sterling, if the ship carries above 150 men, and if a less number, in the sum of 1500l. sterling, which bail shall be to the effect and in the form following : —

2018 Artist Project grants – first round
Edmonton Arts Council and City of Edmonton supports 30 local artistic projects
Artist Project grants for individual artists and collectives support the pursuit of artistic and professional advancement. Be it creation, research, development, curation, exhibition, production or professional development opportunities – artists are welcome to apply to have these projects funded. With so many artists pursuing various ideas and disciplines, it’s inspiring to see what Edmonton’s arts community is creating.
Tumblr media
Image: Nancy Sandercock performs frost flowers/RHIZOME at Mile Zero Dance’s Spazio Performativo (click here to watch her performance filmed by John Bellucci) she will be expanding on this work for The Works Art & Design Festival in a four-hour durational performance installation.
Throughout 2018, you can expect to see numerous artist projects around Edmonton. With their Artist Project investments, Nancy Sandercock and Emmanuel Osahor are each creating art installations to be shown at The Works Art & Design Festival – discover their work as part of the festival from June 21 to July 3 at Site 1. Merging dance, music, and theatre, Thou Art Here will bring you the story of William Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, in the historic 1886 Edmonton Cemetery this fall, assisted by a Project grant.

Seeking an outlet for her compositions, professional composer and pianist Stephanie Urquhart created the group Experience Points. Together they combine funk, jazz, and groove-based music with classic video game soundtracks. With their Artist Project grant they plan to record and release their first album.

Artist Project grants also give artists the opportunity to explore and experiment in their practice. Looking to push her own artistic voice, accomplished dancer, choreographer and instructor Jodie Vandekerkhove will be exploring how to express herself through body and camera. Her dancing-camera will allow audiences to see what a dancer sees from “their” perspective, adding a new voice to the work. Using his Project grant, Keith Walker will be working with assistants to explore the Italian glasswork technique, Murrini. He experienced this labour-intensive process at an international glass residency at Salem State University in Salem, Massachusetts and is excited to continue in this exploration into future works.
