Falloutober 2023 - Day 27
"Green"
Prompt by @falloutober
Word Count - 406
“I don’t think Detective Valentine likes me too much.” The young Detective spoke up, swirling creamer into their coffee.
“Old Nicky? What makes you think he ain’t a fan of yours?” The grizzled cop asked over his black coffee.
The Detective, Silvia, takes a long sip from her mug. “He keeps scowling at me. It’s like he doesn’t want me on the force.”
“Detective Valentine’s been through a lot, Greeny. And he’s an -”
“He’s a what?” A third voice joined the conversation. Nick Valentine, in his long grey duster, shirt and tie, stood in the doorway. His brown hair was slicked back, his face clean shaven.
“I was telling greeny here about what a charming personality you have, Valentine.”
Nick looked past his old friend and colleague, watching Silvia as she observed the small interaction between those who had seen more than her. Nick stood fast in the doorway, his hands in his pockets, his eyes staring into Silvia’s.
“You mind telling me what led to this line of conversation, Kid?”
Silvia stared at him, “I… Sir, I…” She stumbled over her words, the confidence she’d had during her training and final exam had evaporated when she entered the force and was all but gone when Nick struck her with that stare.
“She doesn’t think you like her too much, Nicky boy.” Nick’s glaze briefly turned to the old cop, if looks could kill Nick would have been behind bars long ago. Nick had never liked the nicknames his fellow officers gave him. They felt childish, but maybe that was the point. David had been one of the first men on the scene of Jenny’s death.
Nick shook his head, dispelling the thought. He looked back at the young Detective. “You’re on the Fen’s Phantom Case, right?”
Silvia nodded her head, it was her first real case. She’d only been on the case a few days. But this guy, she shuddered at the thought of all the people he’d already killed.
“Be careful, guys like him like to play games with the detectives.”
She smiled at him, it was the first time he’d seemed human since she’d met him. He turned and left the kitchen.
Silvia downed the last of her coffee. Nodding to the older cop, she left behind Nick and preparing to follow her next lead. She might be green to the unit, but she wasnt going to let that get in her way.

**Does a spoof of the wheel-throwing scene from the movie Ghost but it's Nick getting help re-rolling the last of Kellogg’s signature cigars so it can be smoked as makeshift incense during the autopsy.**

Good old Days
Tumblr media
And here we have the latest sin I've commited, human Nick >:) and my sole survivor from the cop!au that may or may not have been inspired by Cole Phelps and too much film noir.
Okay, gonna ramble:
His name is John Oliver 'Jack' Spade, a Cambridge rookie that Valentine had to partner with during Op. Winter's End. He's a decent shot and excels in information gathering, and despite being bit of a dandy, he likes tinkering with all sorts of machines on his free time. He sucks at anything computer-y, thought, and would much rather remove a terminal-locked door from its hinges than try to hack it. He was excited to be around Nick and tried his best to impress the cool, hard-boiled detective lol. They clashed in a lot of situations, but by the later stages of the Op. the two started to trust and understand one another, up until what happened to Nick's poor fiancée.
And then Nick himself suddenly died of undisclosed reasons while going through government-sponsored experimental treatments for his PTSD, months before the bombs dropped! Jack has no idea what happened, Nick 2.0 can't remember any of it, and I have a murder mystery to put the Glass Onion to shame (I say, ironically) lol

Got so excited about what was in vault 47 I forgot I was listening to a radio play about fallout 4
#random thoughts#fallout#what could it be that gave nick such a disturbed reaction? pre-war nick valentine? commissioner turner? johnathan widmark?#one of the members of BADTFL?#nope it's just. the silver shroud? who was actually a real person?#which is hilarious and i DO think that's what they're going for but the fact the silver shroud bought and hid in his own private vault#is WEIRDLY SIMILAR to eddie winter and also is very much a dick move considering he was a bringer of justice#and like. his vault was literally made for only two people#'shielding the innocent' my ass#also if the crystal jewel whatever does end up being legit and they don't end up doing a weird reset and make everyone alive again#im gonna be SO PISSED#it would be so cool if the crystal like basically reset reality so that nothing happened#and the end of the show is the closing of an entirely seperate case and nick is so fucking confused#i would also like it if the crystal didn't work and everyone stayed dead but if it DOES work and they DONT USE IT imma be pissed#i like that the ss is close friends with nick hancock and danse the identity crisis trio#and that apparently ss and danse were an item? that's cool#also like that the ss is a lady that's a great choice#literally no one gives a shit about nate and it's hilarious#i am wondering which deaths were based on who was available and which deaths were written in from the beginning#loving the fake ad breaks the one about sugar bombs was REALLY well-voiced on the mom and kid's part#i DO wish it took on a more classical noir approach in terms of structure and plot#like it started off like that and then everyone started dying but it's just a personal preference so whatever#LOVE the sole's very clear personality and how she didn't make all the right choices in-game like with the cabot family ending

[Valentine Idolizes You]
➼ Word Count » 0.5k ➼ Warnings » None ➼ Summary » Headcanons based on how Nick treats you once idolized.
Tumblr media
Starting off with the basics, he's gonna wanna hire you. He'll even offer you his bed in the agency, it's not like he sleeps in it anyway. You, him, and Ellie are gonna be the greatest group of detectives in the Commonwealth. Ellie can hold down the fort at home while you and Nick go solve mysteries.
If he hasn't seen you for more than 2 weeks, then, depending on how many cases he's working on, he's gonna go looking for you. He doesn't wanna come across as overbearing, but he's so concerned about losing you, he honestly can't help but want to ensure that you're alright.
That being said, he's always gonna be there for you. You need someone to talk to? Head on over to Nick's place, you were there for him with Winter and he'll gladly be there for you.
Expect a lot of moments where the two of you just sit in comfortable silence. Him looking over case files and you tinkering with your weapons.
Nick—especially around the holidays—will light a little campfire somewhere in the agency and the three of you (you, Nick, and Ellie) will just sit around and talk. It's one of his favorite past times. Just a nice, comfortable moment to take a breath and celebrate yourselves for all the work you've completed together.
Nick will be one of, if not the, most honest person you'll ever come across. He might soften it a bit but Nick will still tell you the truth, whether it's hard or not. He doesn't think he has it in him to keep something from you.
Nick has a habit of quoting pre-war media because he knows you'll understand the references.
If you have the Mysterious Stranger perk, he'll occasionally sit you down in his office and confide his findings with you. He wants to know what you think about him and every detail involving your interactions with the stranger.
Nick is naturally a more serious and sarcastic person, but he finds that he smiles a lot more when he's with you. Nothing big, but nothing too subtle either.
Whenever you meet someone new, Nick likes to interrogate them. He's like a dad in that sense. Again, he's worried he'll come off as overbearing, but he wants to make sure you're not being taken advantage of.
The kind of guy who teaches you how to tie a tie.
If you agreed to stay with him and Ellie at the agency, then he'll frequently ask if you want to go on walks with him around Diamond City. Domestic things like this make him feel at peace, especially when it's with someone he cares about.
Nick really likes to play blackjack with you and, unless you have a crazy good luck stat, he'll win every time. He, at the very least, isn't prone to bragging. It's one of the pros of playing any competitive game with him.
It’s hard to find, but when he can he’ll make you a cup of coffee. He technically doesn’t need it, but he can remember how much human Nick liked it, and you probably deserved it.
On days that aren't busy, Nick will turn the radio on and you’ll teach each other how to dance to certain songs until Travis mentions something that seems sketchy enough to look into.

in your opinion was fallout 4 over-hated at launch or is it just one of those games you have to engage at it's own level (aka The Gamer's Bane)?
It's similar to Super Paper Mario in that it's a very well made and fun game, but it is inconsistent with how the series had been established to be for the previous games. This both in the aesthetic sense, where the retrofuturism and Jetsons-y visuals were cranked up from a 4 to an 11, but also a lot of core changes that people hated. This was stuff up to and including straight up retcons and contradictions, like Jet being mentioned in pre-war terminal entries, or specific power armor lore details that I've actually forgotten but apparently they were important to people. Some go as far as saying it's a soft reboot, which I think is accurate. On top of that, it's significantly more railroaded in its roleplaying possibilities than previous titles, locking you into the role of a grieving widow searching for your kidnapped child no matter who you wanted to be when the game came out, as well as drastically cutting down on dialogue tree diversity and intrigue. These two things you're able to augment with mods, Dana for instance has a backstory of a rogue Institute synth with the memories of a pre-war Vault Dweller who teams up with Nick Valentine to solve the mystery of a missing child. But I'm only able to experience that because a mod I have for skipping the game's intro allows you to pick specific points to spawn, and had to modify HUNDREDS of in-game dialogue interactions to cobble together NPC lines in a way that supports those different backstories when in reference to the main quest. And the fact that fans needed to do all that stuff is kind crazy. Cuz the fans aren't profiting from the game, it's Bethesda that is.
I don't think the game was overhated at launch, I think it was criticized for being completely different from what the entire rest of the series had been, and a letdown in the eyes of many.
I don't think its failings as a Fallout game disqualify it from being a good game, though in the eyes of many it does disqualify it from being a good Fallout game, which I can understand fully.

favourite DCR songs
Because here, we think about the important stuff.
(fyi these are for the base game permanent companions, but if you want to hear about any others let me know :)
Cait: Whole Lotta Shaking Goin' On
I can't actually think of a reason she'd like this it just speaks to me. You can't deny that Big Maybelle would start playing and you'd suddenly look over to see her having a tiny dance and humming along. At higher affinity she's ask you to sing with her; a true honour
Codsworth : Way Back Home
Let's be real, Codsworth is a robot made to serve who has been stuck in the same house for two hundred years, all alone. When Sole starts bringing people back to Sanctuary and renovating the whole town, it was the best thing that had happened to him since pre-war life. He can help people, he can fulfil his duty as a Mr. Handy, and this song lets him reflect on how far he's come
Curie: Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall
She loves Ella Fitzgerald's voice, deeming her an angel (in a french accent, this will sound cute idk) and always asks questions to Sole about how they played the instruments, an art that has since become almost extinct after the war. Sole promises one day they'll try and find a guitar and learn the song for her
Danse: One More Tomorrow
This was him and Cutler's song. Back in Rivet City, they shared a flat somewhere in the complex, and they found a record left behind from the previous owner (one of the tiny ones with like two songs on). Other than the Muddy Rudder, there wasn't too much to do, so One More Tomorrow was often played on repeat. Cutler taught him how to dance to this song, and it remains as his favourite because it helps him remember how he used to laugh and smile back when they were younger
Deacon: Sixty Minute Man
100% hears this song come on the radio and proceeds to give Sole the most childish side eye known to man. He knows full well what the songs is about, but always manages to put some stupid spin on the lyrics and has danced his way away from a super mutant suicider to it.
Hancock: I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire
One of the few memories he still recalls from his childhood is him and his mother playing while this songs plays somewhere in the background; it makes him feel happy, though after so much chem abuse, he can't really understand why. He doesn't remember her face, but always imagines her voice singing along with him to every line.
MacCready: The Wanderer
Absolutely vibes with it, and though he hasn't been around with as many women as the song details, he's been roaming the wastes all his life. He's not quite ready to settle down because he's still trying to recover from Lucy's loss, and The Wanderer speaks to him and his nomadic spirit, letting him know it's okay that things turned out this way.
Valentine: The End of the World
one of his pre-war favourites inherited from his namesake, who attended ballroom dances with Jennifer every Tuesday evening; they loved the slow sway of this song, and even now Nick can't seem to shake the urge to turn it right up from Sole's Pip-Boy whenever it comes on. Can be heard humming it if you listen closely enough in Sanctuary
Piper: Personality
She's always been a great judge of character, even since she was a girl, so understandably, personality's pretty important to her. Her and Deacon duet it while travelling/ in a bar and have gotten surprisingly good at harmonies; Shaun's been trying to fix up an old karaoke machine for them so they can grace the whole of Sanctuary with a personal concert.
Preston: Good Rockin' Tonight
his old Minutemen buddies made a whole routine to this song after he told them he liked it; there's a lot of sentimentality attached to it for him, and doesn't hesitate to make new drunken mistakes to the song, if not just for them.
Strong: Butcher Pete
Strong likes Butcher Pete because he eats people. Butcher Pete is one of his number one idols because of this fact
X6: he claims to hate the station and insists that he much prefers the Classical Station, but really, he secretly loves Pistol Packin' Mama. How does Sole figure this out? They walk in to see him bobbing his head along with the music and singing the odd chorus while he mods his rifle. Most embarrassing moment of his life, but hilarious for the rest of Sanctuary.

I'd love to hear some Hancock headcanons if you have any!
ANON. I AM SO SORRY FOR PULLING A CENTRELINK ON YOU. THIS WAS SENT TO ME IN FUCKING JANUARY 20TH IT'S NOW MARCH IM SO SORRY. HERE THEY ARE. I DON'T HAVE A LOT BUT HERE MY ANON, TAKE THEM.
John Hancock
Definitely believes in your family is the friends you make not the one youre born with.
Definitely had chem problems as a teenager, they put him into rehab and it sort of worked
Knew Nick Valentine even as a kid. They’re pretty solid friends, but sees Nick as a father figure.
Deep down always respected ghouls, especially pre-war ghouls. To survive one of the most horrific events in history, loose all your skin (or hair), still live but be in immense pain. Live with the knowledge that all your loved ones are dead, all the pre-war comforts gone with them. Then to be hunted and persecuted by a few groups just for simply existing. Awful. And did I *mention the long ass life?* His respect for them only skyrocketed after the anti-ghoul law was implemented.
Has an intense fascination and interest in pre-war artifacts and culture, but, doesn’t care about history, being drawn to John Hancock was just a random fluke. He often hangs around pre-war ghouls in hopes they’d tell him a story or two.
He’s always been incredibly rowdy, and the parties he’d throw in diamond city? Absolutely insane and wild. They even got wilder once he became Mayor of Goodneighbor.
Genuinely did not care for history sober, but on mentats? oh boy…. He took some mentats before he took that radiation chem hence his John Hancock persona.
Here’s a particular headcanon about the drug he took: it was produced by West-tek was trialled as a chemo drug, however, it was actually a drug to learn more about ghoulification. As we already know, there were two instances of people going ghoul pre-war, and I’d assume that there were many more (notably the nuclear summer of New York, the nuking of the Middle East and even as far back as Hiroshima and Nagasaki. If i’ve made a mistake or forgot to mention any particular pieces of lore let me know) People definitely knew about ghoulification, or- the government and corporations, but they managed to keep it hush hush and convinced people that they were rumours. Anyway, this drug was trialled on stage 4 and 5 cancer patients to see if ghoulification could reverse cancer or pre-existing illness.

John Hancock headcannons bc I've been rotating him in my head for over a week :
(+Valencock mention)
He/it, Transmasc and pan
Power bottom / Dom top
He has BPD
Hypersexuality is his biggest coping mechanism besides chems
Addicted to Jet and Mentats. Used to do Psycho but he got clean from that.
A bit scrawny
Requires double the caloric intake of humans because ghouls run at almost double the temperature
He doesn't like eating, especially not socially
Battled with bullumia for a long time, especially when the pressure of being mayor gets to him
Casual boyfriends with Nick Valentine
Despite being a ghoul for over 30 years, he's still not used to it
Accidentally gives himself heatstroke at least 3 times a summer
No top surgery and is completely shameless about his body. Frequently walks around with his titties out during summer.
Nipple / tongue piercings
Public nudity isn't frowned upon in Goodneighbour, especially in the summer. It's not unusual to see the traders shirtless, regardless of their gender. Most tend to keep their pants on, though.
Only 5'4. Nick is 6'2. Despite their height difference, Hancock can easily carry Nick.
Surprisingly good at dancing but will only dance if he's drunk enough
Used to do drag shows at The Third Rail before he became mayor
Dabbled in being a stripper and can pole dance, but it's very rare he actually does
Secretly longs for a deep, romantic relationship but he's too afraid it would ruin his image
Street smart, but not book smart. Sometimes he'll ask or say something so unbelievably stupid it makes Nick's internal fans start whirring in frustration
Valentine sometimes sends him holotapes of his favourite pre-war songs and Hancock listens to them religiously. If he's in his office, chances are the radio is playing one of Nick's play lists
