Finally figured out what to do with the window that connects our kitchen to the mud room. We were just going to use it for dinners but it is a large window. Hi lovely. I hope this doesn’t come across as rude, I’m very new to all of this! I was raised atheist, however I’m considering converting to Catholicism (I think I’m in what they call the inquiry stage?? Just researching and finding out and praying). The thing is, I’m bisexual (but mostly like the same sex) and I don’t know that I would be willing to be celibate or to completely discount ever having a relationship with another woman. Do you think there is still hope for me? (1/2)

First off, SO EXCITED AT THE PROSPECT OF WELCOMING YOU INTO THE CATHOLIC FAMILY!!!

Second, I have a particular real-life resource to point you in the direction of!!

Eve Tushnet is a Catholic convert from atheism, and a lesbian!! One of the first books I’d read on Catholic celibacy was hers, titled Gay And Catholic. (…I should absolutely get a Side B revolving library going…)

Eve in particular highlights the narratives within Scripture and the lives of the saints of same-sex intentional community, companionship, kinship, and lifelong covenantal bonds.

In her words:

I want to focus on what these passages can do for gay Christians. They suggest that there is guidance for our longings for same-sex love and intimacy. These longings need not be sources of shame. We don’t need to root them out or pray that they go away. It is possible to shape your life around love of someone of the same sex in a way which honors God. These loves can knit you into family …

The promises Ruth makes to Naomi are startlingly similar to some of the promises and practices of Christian friends several millennia later, as Alan Bray and others have found–people who lived with their friend, shared finances, became kin to one another’s families, practiced their faith together, and were buried together.

The reason Side B theology is so radical and counter-cultural is that it insists on re-evaluating what it means to make lifelong commitments within a religious framework. It rejects marriage as the best, the only absolute way to perform Christianity. It calls out the nuclear family, which prioritizes the husband & wife & kids unit over all else, as a rejection of Jesus’ call to recognize, create, and make space for a brotherhood and sisterhood of the faithful.

What I’m saying is: yes, the Church calls us to a particularly rigorous code of conduct (and not just from gays—singles, religious orders, and yes even married people are called to a rigid structure of chastity—just ask a Catholic couple trying to navigate the NFP!) But she also calls us to be a Spiritual Family, kin with everyone in the Church. She doesn’t call you to cut off your deep love of women and your relationships with them any more than she calls you to cut off your arm. She is calling us to love more deeply and intimately, beyond sexual pleasure, beyond the nuclear family, beyond the traditional and contemporary models of romantic love given to us.

In our sacrifices, She is calling us to be part of a greater family.

While making my 2019 prayer/dreams list I came up to this scripture in 1 Kings 8:56 : “Praise be to The Lord, who has given his people Israel just as he promised. Not one word has failed of all the good promises he gave through his servant Moses.” I praise just like Solomon praise God for giving us what he promise us.
