My local network habitually aired Power Rangers episodes all out of order when I was a kid – we were lucky if both parts of a two-parter ended up airing consecutively, much less anything further-reaching – so I always had a fuzzy idea of how some of the plot points lined up.

For example, I didn't realise until just now that the gag where Bulk and Skull got turned into chimpanzees wasn't a one-off thing? Apparently they just stayed that way for the next fifteen episodes, and continued to serve as the show's comic relief B-plot in spite of being monkeys, voice-acted Garfield style by their regular human actors?

Now I'm wondering what else the out-of-order airing made me fail to connect the dots for.

I think one of the moments that really got me in that opening sequence of the OG team staring all shellshocked about Trini's death was Kimberly falling to her knees behind the others.

Like, it's a little detail, but to me it really emphasized the attention to detail that went into this special, where even if they didn't have Amy Jo Johnson there to play Kimberly, they still acknowledged that Trini was her best friend by her having that beat that didn't require Kimberly to say a word (at least from the audience's perspective), show that, even if the characters could only be there as played by stand-ins, there was still this acknowledgement of how they felt about the death of Trini.

I've seen things that claim to be a love letter or Valentine to the fans before and honestly end up missing the mark by continents (Star Trek Enterprise's "These are the Voyagers" comes to mind immediately, to say nothing of the hash that Mega Force ended up being made into...). Once and Always actually lived up to that.

"Amelia is the first full series female red ranger" her series is 10 fucking episodes and she only becomes red in the end of episode 3. Also Mick is also there being a red ranger, and so is Zayto and the red Morphing Master at the start. Not to mention that to do that they demoted a black man.

Let's not give them too much credit.

I think the writing was smart in regards to the continuity. A lot of the times in the main show, they try to bend over backwards justifying villains coming back when they should have been destroyed by the Z Wave. Having Rita not actually be Rita but the particles of her evil from the Z Wave taking control of one of the Alphas was pretty clever imho.

Not sure how I feel about Zack being a politician....I know the Peace Conference was a thing, but I just never saw him as a senator. A diplomat and liaison for another country maybe, but not a senator or congressman...

Billy not being on Aquatar and having a tech company on Earth is great. It’s so nice to see David Yost back after all these years and I welcome it so much. It’s what my king deserves!

I think Minh is a good addition to the cast and her arc about revenge vs justice is such a good message for kids. I hope I can see more of her in the mainline series

Bulk and Skull weren’t there but they had that small cameo so beggars can’t be choosers I guess...

Yeah, so I was wondering how they would justify no Jason, Tommy, or Kim but it was pretty simple...turn them into action figures!

AND WHAT THE FUCK RITA EVEN WENT AFTER OTHER RANGERS! (pause in the middle of that scene and see who you can identify lmao)

As a PR fan I adore the cheesiness with the jokes. I even adored the callbacks to silly ideas and phrases they had (”too much pink energy is dangerous”; the hiphopkido; etc)

Above all, I loved that this was a tribute to Thuy Trang. Because of her death, her character was often ignored and I’m sure they had no idea of how to properly honor her character. This warmed my heart so much and it really does show what it means to have a legacy.

AFTER 30 YEARS IT WAS SO NICE TO SEE THE OG MEGAZORD AGAIN! I would have loved to see all the Rangers get into their Zord and make their quips again, but on the other hand, it wouldn’t have been the same without Kim and Jason so I’m okay with skipping it

OH FUCK THAT ENDING THAT FUCKING ENDING I TOLD MYSELF I WOULDN’T CRY BUT THE CLIP OF THE OG GANG AT THE JUICE BAR WITH KIM SINGING AND THEN THE IN LOVING MEMORY OF THUY AND JDF JUST FUCKING HAS ME SOBBING LIKE A FUCKING BITCH I FUCKING MISS THEM SO MUCH

Overall, while I have some minor nitpicks, it’s just stuff that was out of the production’s control. Would I have liked some things to be different? Absolutely. But this was such a good anniversary special and really respected the original MMPR. I do recommend watching it if you’re a fan of the show, at least to see Walter and David reprise their roles and becoming fine leaders

This is pure speculation on my part but I have some thoughts

SPOILERS AHEAD, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

I’m just thinking about this tweet because in one of the episode descriptions it says the rangers have to make a big sacrifice in order to save the world.

What I’m thinking will happen is that Zayto sacrifices himself to defeat the Sporix but, in typical PR fashion, he is revived and therefore becomes this new white ranger.

If the rumours are true that “Cosmic Fury” will be a continuation of Dino Fury, which I suspect it could well be, then who will be the red ranger? I guess Zayto could become the red ranger again but that might defeat the purpose of the new white ranger suit.

Also if they’re using Kiramager footage then presumably Izzy will continue as the green ranger so they’ll have to find a way to deal with the whole skirt issue lol

Sorry this is kind of incoherent but I’m interested to hear what others think?

it took me 5 hours to finish a 1 hour special because brain but here’s my thought sequence/what my brain was doing during the mmpr once and always special:

ok walter’s acting in this...god so good, that first scene with him when they’re trying to decide how to tell minh 

just that scene where minh learns her mom died god i wanna die

Jane and JBorg still actively giving news about what's going on on Earth while Zedd is invading reminds me of a comment I once made about the weatherfolks who work at the Weather Channel and are often the ones reporting LIVE when hurricanes are happening. (That they are braver than any Marine).
