i'm in the mood to read about a snowy setting with a simple magic system. I'll tolerate a romance plot but I'm looking more for the magical vibes

and please don't rec me anything by Naomi Novik or Katherine Arden or Kirsty Logan - I've tried 'em, I don't like 'em. gimme something new-ish if you can

I'm really conflicted about Polarthon next week >_<

I know I'm participating. I have like 10 books checked out (or picked from my collection) for a 7 day readathon lol. And my first prompt spin was "Polar Fantasy."

But.

I can't decide if I want to do 7 total spins in advance, or spin as I go. I should be fine either way, because there's only 1 prompt that I only have 1 book for. (But I have tons of options if I choose something that isn't a polar fantasy for that one.) All the other prompts will fit at least 3 books I have ready, and that's just counting the polar/polar fantasy ones.

But the anticipation and not knowing is getting to me like when I was a little kid and someone got me a gift for a holiday and taunted me about it for days or weeks before giving it to me.

But also I want to be spontaneous, and not go into this readathon with a set TBR list/number of books to read, because that will add pressure I don't want.

Ok... I think I've talked myself into spinning as I go... probably...

More mentally ill characters in sci-fi, in fantasy, in romance and fun and high stakes situations and everything in between, as the heroes, as complex individuals, multifaceted and treated with respect, not having their needs and differences ignored or skirted around but, again, not having them be their only trait or plot point/entire premise! Please, I'm begging, on my hands and knees, there's a place for these topics and characters in realistic, reflective and literary fiction, yeah, but there's also a place in those magical, mystical, action packed, mysterious and alien worlds, give them to ME

Lord Lamonte Hubert Urdagan is known among Tri-Kingdom nobility as the worst Lord in all of Vestur. At a rather young age he inherited the Urdagan Lordship after his father perished in a freak moose accident, and he has been an unwanted blemish on the Northern Kingdom ever since. Luckily, the Tri-Kingdom at large can comfortably pretend he does not exist, as Urdagan territory has little in the ways of population, roads, trade exports, or modern strategic value. There are viscounts with more sway in Tri-Kingdom politics than Lord Urdagan.

This is a reality he has accepted, and he attempts to make the best of it. He does his damnedest to care for his people with the means he has, and looks for silver linings where he can find them.

After all, if no one cares to watch you too closely, your time is your own.

Hey, have you tried searching for "polar fantasy books" lists?

I don't have many recommendations except a few middle grades (Ember and the Ice Dragons, The Eye of the North, Sky Song, Polar Bear Explorers Club) and obvious/more well known books like The Bear & the Nightingale, Even the Darkest Stars, East, A Shiver of Snow and Sky, Frostheart, Winterwood, etc, but good luck!

Polar fantasy is one of my favorite subgenres but it's tricky to find books like that sometimes.
