Chemistry in pitch and asphalt
Did you know that the Pitch drop experiment is the world's longest-lasting experiment? It started in 1927 to prove that some solids are actually highly viscous fluids, and to this day, it continues to fascinate scientists and the public alike.
The experiment uses pitch, a complex mixture of hydrocarbons, which has an incredible viscosity level 100 billion times that of water! Since 1938, only nine drops have fallen, leaving enough left for another century of dripping. If you're curious to see the 10th drop, you can watch it live on the experiment's website. Science is truly amazing!
