Movie Review: Ennio
Italian music composer Ennio Morricone (1928-2020) was one of the greatest musicians of all time. Without a doubt! He composed the score for over 500 films. That’s not a typo! At the 2016 Golden Globe Awards, Quentin Tarantino accepted the award for Best Music Score on behalf of Morricone for the score to QT’s The Hateful Eight and he said of him:
“As far as I am concerned is my favorite composer! When I say favorite composer, I don’t mean movie composer, that ghetto. I’m talking about Mozart. I’m talking about Beethoven. I’m talking about Schubert. That’s who I’m talking about.”
I fully agree. He’s not just one of the greatest film composers of all time, but music composers! It is so hard to choose the highlights of such a rich and robust filmography and discography, but if I had to choose, I think his score for Sergio Leone’s westerns A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (which I watched in my Directing class in college and did a whole paper on FYI) are all time capsule worthy! That director / composer collaboration was among the greatest in history. Other favorites of mine include The Battle of Algiers, Terrence Malick’s Days of Heaven, Samuel Fuller’s White Dog, John Carpenter’s The Thing, Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables and Casualties of War, Phil Joanou’s State of Grace, Bugsy, and In the Line of Fire. But it was QT who finally got Morricone an Academy Award for Composing (he had received an Honorary Award in 2007) for scoring The Hateful Eight. Prior to this collaboration, QT used various Morricone pieces in the soundtracks to Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, Death Proof, Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained, and Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood. I got my copy of Hateful Eight soundtrack on vinyl!

Director Giuseppe Tornatore worked with Moriccone a ton on thirteen films he directed since 1988, notably his love letter to film Cinema Paradiso (read my 2021 blu-ray review here), which had so many beautiful themes and ideas tied together by Moriccone's score. Tornatore had a great working relationship and friendship with Moriccone and made this comprehensive documentary Ennio that premiered at the 2021 Venice Film Festival and was recently released in the U.S. including Coolidge Corner Theatre.
The doc is filled with a ton of Moriccone himself telling his story and tons of anecdotes. There's a ton of archival footage and lots of clips from films. Featured interviewees include Clint Eastwood (start of a lot of the Leone films), QT, Barry Levinson, Oliver Stone, Joanou, Dario Argento and Tornatore himself. There's also a ton of musicians represented including Hans Zimmer, John Williams, Quincy Jones, Bruce Springsteen (he grew up a fan), James Hetfield (Metallica covered his music live on numerous tours) and more.
the maestro at work
This is very much a doc about film history based on the sheer amount of films he composed and at times it borders on hagiography, but at its core it is about a legend who deserves the documentary treatment. I also commend Tornatore for not turning this whole film into a doc about his own relationship with him, but more just putting himself into the pantheon of work. There was quite a lot I learned, including how he almost scored A Clockwork Orange for Stanley Kubrick, but wasn't able to due to scheduling. In the end we're lucky this doc was made when Moriccone was alive to tell his story. Expect this to be shown in both music and film classes for years to come.

This Month In History - October
Let’s raise a glass to several landmark anniversaries this month:
Oct. 3, 1997: The Matchmaker opens
In Oct. 1997, the Janeane Garofalo rom-com was released. Probably wondering why I am including this on the list of landmark pop culture anniversaries right? I worked on the film, that’s why. The film was filmed mostly in Ireland and little bit in Boston. In the Spring of 1997, I had just finished working as a Location Intern on Ted Demme’s Monument Ave, the first major movie I ever worked on. They were doing some reshoots on The Matchmaker, so they brought in a bunch of the Monument Ave crew since that had just wrapped. The Location Manager called and asked if I could work on the shoot in Faneuil Hall in Boston. I was tasked with being in front of Clark’s bar where they had some lights set up and making sure no drunk idiots messed with the lights and equipment. I also held traffic during select shots. It was far from glamorous, but it was cool to say I was a part of a movie. I saw the film when it premiered at the Boston Film Festival in Sept. 1997 and then saw it again opening weekend in Oct. 1997. It’s kinda corny, but better than most people think. Happy 25 The Matchmaker!
Oct. 5, 1962: Dr. No opens in UK
In Oct. 1962, the first James Bond movie was released in the U.K. The U.S. didn’t get it until May 1963. This and Goldfinger are my two favorite 007 movies. Being the first one it set the tone for the character and the films. Happy 60th Dr. No!
Oct. 9, 1987: Three O’Clock High opens
In Oct. 1987, one of my 15 favorite movies ever made was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 35th TO’CH!
Oct. 9, 1987: Tunnel of Love released
In Oct. 1987, Bruce Springsteen’s 8th album was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 35th TOL!
Oct. 10, 1997: Boogie Nights opens
In October 1997, Paul Thomas Anderson’s breakthrough (not his debut, but the one that put him on the map) was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 25 Boogie Nights!
Oct. 10, 2007: In Rainbows released
In Oct. 2007, Radiohead’s 7th self-released album was released online. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 15 In Rainbows!
Oct. 11, 2022: Punch Drunk Love and Bowling for Columbine open
In October 2022, Paul Thomas Anderson’s 4th film was released (big month for PTA anniversaries)! Coming off Magnolia, PTA went in a very different direction with this dark rom-com starring Adam Sandler of all people, but the Sandman rose to the dramatic challenges as Barry Egan, a lonely man with social anxiety whose life changes when he discovers a loophole in a pudding promotion, meeting his sister’s co-worker, calls a sex line, and oh yeah - takes in an abandoned harmonium. Sandler was cast way far against type in contrast with his goofy comedies, but it works here. And who can forget the showdown with the sleazy Mattress Man played by Philip Seymour Hoffman? I attended an advance screening in NYC with a Q&A with PTA, Sandler and producer JoAnne Sellar. After the screening outside, I approached PTA (who I met at a Magnolia screening in 2000) and I actually got choked up as I thanked him for dedicating the film to Ted Demme. He was very appreciative. PDL got a mixed response when it was released, but over time more and more people have mentioned how good it is, especially as Sandler has done more dramatic work. Happy 20th PDL!
On the same day in October 2002, Michael Moore’s greatest documentary was released (and that’s saying something). It begins examining the events of the Columbine Massacre in 1999 and then he dug deeper to look at America’s gun violence. I’ve been a fan of Moore’s docs (notably Roger and Me and Fahrenheit 9/11), but with this one he was going big. He wasn’t afraid to confront the enemies on camera. While some have criticized his work for stretching the truth or over-glorifying Canada, he made his point and did it in a thought-provoking and entertaining way. Happy 20th BFC!
Oct. 12, 2012: Argo opens
In Oct. 2012, Ben Affleck’s greatest moment as a director was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 10 Argo!
Oct. 18, 1967: first issue of Rolling Stone published
In Oct. 1967, the first issue of Rolling Stone magazine hit the stands. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 55th RS!
Oct. 22, 2002: One By One released
In Oct. 2002, Foo Fighters’ 4th album was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 20th One By One!
Oct. 23, 1992: Reservoir Dogs opens
In Oct. 1992, the debut film from Quentin Tarantino was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 30th RD!
Oct. 26, 2007: Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead opens
In Oct. 2007, Sidney Lumet’s final film was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 15 BTDKYD!
Oct. 27, 1982: 1999 released
In Oct. 1982, Prince’s 5th album was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 40th 1999!
Oct. 28, 1977: Nevermind the Bullocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols released in the U.K.
In Oct. 1977, the only studio album from the Sex Pistols was released in the U.K. (it was released in the U.S. a few weeks later). Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 45th NTBHTSP!
Oct. 29, 2002: Nirvana released
In Oct. 2002, the Nirvana compilation album was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 20th Nirvana!
Oct. 30, 1987: Faith released
In Oct. 1987, the debut solo album from George Michael was released. After the break up of Wham!, this was his big rock star moment. It is almost like a greatest hits album in many ways. I got it on cassette tape and it was one of the best dance pop albums of the late 80s. Happy 35th Faith!
