THE ART OF SMOKING CIGARETTES

I remember when I was younger, this one girl said to me “artists are tortured souls”, at the time it made sense – solely because it sounded cool and not because it came from a place of true meaning. This project’s name struck the same chord with me, you know ‘The Art Of Smoking Cigarettes’ – TAoSC for short. I myself could never reside in a place of true meaning when it comes to TAoSC - just because I don’t smoke. Then it hit me, cigarettes are a form of suffering, you a slave to your own addiction but Vanity Of Man & BABA BLACK managed to turn that suffering into art. Then the phrase of artists being tortured souls finally had true meaning to me. And this isn’t anything I’m making up just to sound cool, this really happened.

Vanity & BLACK are part of a J-Sec/Kimberley based music and art outfit called Royal Roots. They come through with a collaborative effort in the form of a short four track EP. Illustrating what they see when they’re living out their youth, punctuated by ‘MARLBORO REDS’ and ‘BACKWOODS’. The project opens up with ‘COFFEE & CIGARETTES’. We find Vanity riding some classic piano keys singing a groovy hook “wake me in the morning with that, coffee and cigarettes”. The song sounds like something you’d use for a 90s TV show - something like Sgudi Snaysi, shout out to Joe Mafela for the culture. The song oozes good vibes and optimism. You start to think to yourself “nothing could possibly go wrong after this coffee and cigarette”. If you a morning person, this is literally a song you could start your day with.

And then there’s ‘BACKWOODS’. you know we were just waking up to ‘COFFEE & CIGARETTES’ but this jam feels like an afternoon drive with the sun setting and the wind blowing in your drop top, well we don’t all own a drop, neither do I but you can always imagine you know. Though rolling one and watching the sunset or just to ease off the day. Halfway through the project, so much imagery comes to me and I don’t even smoke. The project is about smoking believe me but the artistic side of it.

Then the EP finally starts to slow down, it’s getting late, it’s time to retreat and gather yourself. I find this song somewhat interesting, ‘MARLBORO REDS’ is a sequel to a song called ‘Benefits’ on Vanity’s debut tape ‘Pagne Loves Vanity’. Here the artists are riding an Evil Needle beat, with jazzy aesthetics. It opens with a candid verse. Both the artists seem to genuinely express how they feel about the art. Professing their love for it, though it also seems like a conversation with a women – letting her know them and their craft “so we can chill an elevate” the artists sing on the hook of the song. While also bumming your last smoke with her. Then it’s ‘RIDE/PARADISE’, this is honestly my personal favourite on the EP. It’s an ode to bad bitches, you know the typical college girl with a 32 inch Peruvian weave and too many late nights and still manages to get an A+ for her assignments. I’d love to give you all the details on this one but I actually want you to listen to the project.

The tape comes complete with a picture book and a short interesting screenplay which makes for an interesting read. It will also give you a bit more insight on what the craft means and how it came about. Personally I think they’ve managed to tap into a sound that’s different and well I wish people find it weird cause I get bummed when people discover the artists I listen to. ANITA JONES -  Un si grand, si bel homme, qui a en ce jour montré qu'il était capable de bien plus que de se contenter de diriger le monde. Elle avait hâte de le voir arriver, hâte de pouvoir se jetter à ses pieds pour lui jurer fidélité, pour l'implorer de l'épargner ; voir même de la prendre pour épouse et avoir la chance de diriger le monde avec lui ; parce que rien, ni personne, ne pouvait résister au grand Abel Rhodes, qu'on eut tôt fait de surnommer partout : "L'implacable conquérant".

ANITA JONES - Elle attendait donc, encore, et encore, afin d'avoir la chance d'à nouveau voir celui qui allait s'avérer être le sauveur de l'humanité ; parce qu'Anita savait. Elle savait que depuis la chute du Raptor-Jésus ; rien ne pouvait résister d'un côté aux zombies nazis et à leurs terrifiantes licornes de combat, et de l'autre, aux extraterrestres communistes venu répandre la parole marxiste dans les magnifiques Etats-Unis post-apocalyptique.

ABEL RHODES - C’était non sans une certaine impatience qu’il avait attendu cette confrontation avec la dirigeante de la Mine, cette pauvre femme qui avait osé mettre en échec ses projets de conquête du monde – ou du moins, de conquête du Royaume des licornes constipées ce qui, dans une moindre mesure, revenait sensiblement à la même chose.

ABEL RHODES - Depuis toutes ces années de catastrophe, depuis que Putin avait pris le contrôle de la maison blanche et libéré le virus H1Z1 sur l’ensemble de la population américaine, il avait combattu bien pire que ça. Et à mains nues, s’il vous plaît.

ANITA JONES - L'arrivée d'Abel la laissa toute émoustillée ; autant de virilité, autant de puissance incarnée dans un seul et même personnage, c'était bien trop pour Anita. Au son de sa voix puissante et tonitruante, Anita finit par tomber à genou ; au moment où il sortit sa punchline qui lui fit un effet indéniable. Elle répondit alors, sans prendre la peine de se relever : « Non, bien sûr que non votre grandeur ; par ma victoire, j'ai voulu prouver ma valeur, et justifier ma place à vos côtés maître, où est ma place. Vous pouvez m'appeler Jones ; oui, ou Anita. Ou esclave, si vous le souhaitez. Sachez que nous nous rendons, et que nous sommes à votre... »

ANITA JONES - « Maître ; il est temps pour vous d'accéder à la gloire. Vous êtes celui qui va mettre fin à la tyrannie du Reich de l'Outre-Tombe ; et je serais votre accessoire durant cette guerre » comme pour illustrer ses propos, Anita jeta l'imperméable qu'elle portait au sol en un mouvement, révélant une tenue assez légère ; des sous-vêtements sur lesquels étaient cousu le magnifique visage d'Abel.

ABEL RHODES - Heureusement, les ponets d’Abel n’étaient jamais bien loin quand on avait besoin d’eux, fidèles et loyaux à leur seul et unique maître, et prêts à se jeter à corps perdu dans la bataille afin d’assurer la victoire totale et complète.

ABEL RHODES - Néanmoins, aujourd’hui ne semblait pas être leur jour de chance puisque ce ne fut ni plus ni moins que Chuck Norris qui fendit les rangs adverses, se portant en première ligne afin d’abattre leur allié de dernière minutes.

ABEL RHODES - Saisissant Jones à bras le corps, il sauta d’un bond sur le dos d’une des licornes mécaniques vaincues et les guida jusqu’au cœur de la forêt où ils pourraient mûrement réfléchir à leur stratégie de riposte sans un führer pernicieux pour leur balancer quelques llamasticots moustachus, vicelards et terriblement dangereux. Il était terriblement compliqué de vaincre ces bêtes-là puisqu’elles étaient capables de cracher de l’acide extrêmement corrosif sur plusieurs mètres tout en chantant le Horst-Wessel-Lied à vous en crever les tympans.

JAMIE FERGUSON - Arrivant juste derrière le commandant Shepard, Jamie était vêtu de son pagne de guerre et sa massue high-tech où était gravé Abel avec un cœur.

JAMIE FERGUSON - L’homme en pagne arriva enfin devant son vénérable chef lors d’une élégante glissade sur les genoux dans le sang gluant. "Tu es en vie ! Enfin, quelqu'un comme toi ne peut pas mourir, tu es immortel!" Dit-il à son chef plein d’admiration.

JAMIE FERGUSON - Prenant le visage de son chef entre les mains, il l’embrassa puis lui pinça les fesses avec un sourire radieux. "Ne m’oublie pas mon Rhodes !"
