How about dragonite? I know they are big and powerful. But their usually pleasent demeanor and high inteligence keeps that power in check, so would size be the only issue for the big orange softie?
Tumblr media
While dragonites do score a D rank, you do have good instinct in pointing out that size is the biggest issue here. Although, their sheer power is certainly something to keep an eye on.
Dragonites are pretty big, needless to say. At seven feet tall, it certainly wouldn’t be impossible to keep a dragonite in your home (there’s human beings that tall, after all). But space isn’t the only issue when you get into a pokémon species this large: think about the food costs, the bed, the transportation, etc. They’re quite heavy too, at over 450 pounds! This size increases the their threat level significantly.
Thankfully, as you pointed out, dragonites are big orange softies. They are described in the pokédex as “kindhearted” (Ruby/Sapphire) and are known to fly over the sea to rescue people from drowning (Gold). That being said, very few humans have interacted with this species (Red/Blue, LeafGreen). They are theorized to live on an isolated island out at sea populated only by dragonites (Yellow, Crystal). At the very least, dragonites are not very used to living among humans Unfortunately, these pokémon are said to be as intelligent as humans (Red/Blue). This brings up some really difficult ethical questions about if it would be just to keep one as a pet in the same way that it would be unjust to keep a human as a pet. Perhaps they should be left to their own agency.
As previously mentioned, dragonites are immensely powerful pokémon. Despite their large build and relatively small wings, they can fly at pretty incomprehensible speeds. The pokédex claims that dragonites are capable of flying around the globe in just 16 hours (Emerald). Doing some pretty simple math, this means that dragonites could fly as fast as 1,556 miles per hour. While we must acknowledge that this is a vast oversimplification, because it is much more likely that it takes them some flight time to build up this speed, it is an indication of unbelievable strength that makes moves like Extreme Speed and Slam even more dangerous. Then you add in moves like Thunder Punch and Fire Punch, which present significant hazards, or high damage moves like Hurricane and Hyper Beam, and you have a pokémon with a truly startling ability to cause destruction. All that being said, they are usually quite calm. They are not, however, completely above having bad days: as the pokédex puts it, “incur the wrath of this… pokémon at your peril, because it will smash everything to smithereens before it’s satisfied” (Moon).
While dragonites are known for their kindhearted nature and intelligence, their size and innate power makes them a force of nature that should probably not be constrained to a human home. Add in the fact that they’re as intelligent as people, and you may have an ethical issue as well. I’m sure one would like to be your friend, though!

Bradley and Jake fight like schoolboys in the Shatterdome hallways. That's how Hondo finds out their drift-compatibility potential.
Bob, Javy & Nat in a Jaeger as Lead Jaeger. 'Cause we need Cool, Calm & Collected as Team Leader. (And 25,000 tons of badassness.)
Heartbreaking scene à la Herc/Chuck/Stacker between Mav, Bradley & Ice. Ice has step up and is once again going to pilot a Jaeger after Mav is incapacitated. Bradley & Mav try to say goodbye to each other. (Twist - Ice spills the beans on purpose while drifting with Bradley, hoping these two fucking idiots will bury the hatchet once and for all, after it is all over. Also, they will live, 'cause fuck the canon from both movies. And Ice wants to have dinner with his love and kid TOGETHER.)
Slider as Marshall Ron Kerner.
Bradley & Jake experiencing ghost feeling of their attempt at drifting. A feeling that lingers longer and stronger than usual because they both hold onto it. And cherish it.

Would A Hisuian Zoroark Be A Good Pet?
Tumblr media
To be honest, it’s a little hard to say. In the case of this extinct (?) variant of modern extant zoroarks, there is a major deficit of data about their behavior. The only pokédex data we have about this variant comes from the distant past of the Sinnoh Region, which is the sort of data we tend to take with a larger grain of salt than usual. This means that Hisuian zoroarks’ size and moves carry significantly more weight than usual. So, mathematically, a Hisuian Zoroark would not have made a very good pet at all (remember, they’re not really around anymore). Just how bad though? I can’t really say.
At five feet tall, Hisuian zoroarks were pretty big for pets, though a lot of that height likely came from their impressive manes. Like extant zoroarks, these variants were certainly big enough to cause a human some serious harm if they wanted to. Unlike modern zoroarks, however, Hisuian zoroarks didn’t primarily rely on illusions to scare away enemies: they used illusions and the otherworldly power of their spite to cause immense physical and psychic damage. Hisuian zoroarks were said to be so full of spite towards everyone else that it would attack regardless of it’s own safety with “a bitter energy so intense, it lacerate[d] [their] own body” (Legends: Arceus). This variant of zoroark was both unfriendly and violent, which doesn’t indicate that they would make the best pets.
This variant’s move pool is rather threatening as well. Their signature move Bitter Malice, shared with Hisuian zoruas, allowed them to channel their malice into a decently powerful special attack. As a ghost-type pokémon, Hisuian zoroark could use Curse to reduce a target’s entire health by a fourth in short increments, a potentially lethal attack depending on the context in which it is used. Unsurprisingly, Hisuian zoroarks also made use of their ghostly abilities to slash at anemias with moves like Shadow Claw, which could really do some damage considering its propensity to land critical hits!
Due to their unfriendly and violent nature, as well as their lethal capabilities, it seems that Hisuian zoroarks would not have made great pets. This is one case I’d like to revisit later down the line, just to be fair, if and when more data about this pokémon becomes available. Judging a pokémon based off of a single pokédex entry seems a little unfair. Here’s hoping this curious variant pops up again soon!

Feast Day | Revelers
((ooc note: this is open to any character present all guin's bday ball who wishes to jump in on this! this one im intending to make a bit plot-based, as i wanted to write out roderick allowing the astairans to make offerings...and then the publically receiving the "shocking" news that the staffords might be bastards soon after just bc its high drama and i thought we might all have fun w it!!))
The Great Hall seemed to glow. Decorated by the Varmonts in gold and in bronze everywhere and limned with torches and roaring fires in each of the halls many hearths, Eilia was struck with the strange impression that she stood within a jewelry box, gems and metals catching the light in a strange dark-light transmutation that left all the world half kaleidoscopic in glowing shadows of amber and black.
Drums boomed a sonorous rhythm as the people of the Varmont Empire danced their controlled, static dances, and Eilia found their motions were more trancelike than joyful. Perhaps, she thought bitterly, joy would indeed be the next thing Roderick would outlaw. It did, indeed, seem to be the kind of bent his mind took. Still, Eilia shook her head clear of these thoughts. When she approached the golden thone, she must inhabit another character, entirely. She would not be the scorned, conquered queen but, rather, the grateful guest. Her quest was too important to fail.
In place of the high wooden seat of Eilia and her father and his father before them, carved with stars and moons, tangled amongst a world of faux bois foliage, Roderick had got in a garish polished-gold throne that soared up and. up and up. She thought he must have plundered the wealth of half the world's nations to build his golden throne, alone, and Eilia's lips pressed together in disquiet she refused to speak. Still, this too she pressed aside as, approaching the throne, Eilia caught Aria's eye. The time had come.
Previously, she'd been speaking with Sebastian and he was even now speaking in hushed tones to his father. Eilia held her breath and she prayed.
The Emperoro's eyes were sharp and grey like ice and, as they glanced past his son towards her, Eilia straightened. There was a calculating gleam in Roderick's eye, and Eilia could not trust it.
"What do you suppose he will say?" Eilia quietly asked her sister. "Ought we to have a...fall back position, should he refuse?"
